Wadala police face heat over kidnappings

Mumbai, May 29 — More than 250 locals surrounded Wadala police station on Friday to protest police inaction in the kidnap of two minor girls 20 days ago. Firoz A, one of the girls’ father said 20 days ago, his 14-year-old daughter and her 15-year-old friend went missing from their respective houses. “We lodged a missing complaint at Wadala police station but when the police enquired in the area and found two local boys also missing, they registered a case of kidnapping against the two 22-year-old boys,” said Firoz. “The police investigated and found the four were in Uttar Pradesh. A police team went there to arrest the boys and bring back our girls but returned empty-handed,” he said at the police station, where he was present with the locals. “It’s hard to believe a police team went to UP but couldn’t even get pictures of the boys. I’m afraid that if the police do not arrest the boys soon, they will kill my daughter and her friend, Ruchi Sharma,” he said. “If the children have eloped, the police should at least tell us,” he added. The alleged kidnappers, identified as Mumtaz (22) and Parvez (23), lived in the same area as the girls and worked as daily wage labourers. Vilas Shinde, senior police inspector at Wadala police station, said the couples had eloped and the girls had taken cash and jewellery from their houses, and said police are charging them with kidnapping because they are minors.

Asked about fresh efforts to locate the girls, Shinde said: “We’ve sent messages to police stations in the neighbouring areas of UP. In Mumbai too, we’ve sent wireless messages to all police stations, railway stations and bus stands.”

Jaya snubs SP, sides with Amar

New Delhi, May 28 — Actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Friday snubbed the Samajwadi Party (SP) by declining its offer for a Rajya Sabha seat, barely two days after the party appeared to have weaned her away from old friend, Amar Singh. A stunned SP leadership confirmed that Jaya informed them about her decision “to take a break from politics”, in a move being seen as a victory for Singh, who was expelled from the party in February. Top SP leaders, including party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, were at a loss of words to explain why the actress was nominated for the Upper House, given her close ties with Amar Singh. Asked by reporters in Lucknow whether Jaya’s husband, Amitabh could be behind her decision, a disappointed Yadav replied : “Amitabh Bachchan has never liked politics. He was elected for the Lok Sabha but after a brief period, he resigned from there.” Indications of SP having miscalculated the situation came in the form of Jaya’s silence following the announcement on Wednesday. Her renomination to Rajya Sabha was being seen as a reward by the party for not siding with Singh, after his expulsion. However, the Bachchan family’s decision not to desert their decades-old family friend Singh appeared to be a result of the meeting between Amitabh and Singh in Mumbai on Thursday. There were reports of relations being strained between the two recently, after Singh made his displeasure public on Jaya’s continuation in the SP.

Having lost out in this round, the SP hurriedly announced party spokesperson Mohan Singh’s name in Jaya’s place, a known Amar Singh baiter.

Courtney Love cosies up to Uma Thurman’s ex

New York, May 18 (ANI): Rock musician Courtney Love has added fuel to rumours that she is involved with actress Uma Thurman’s hotelier-ex Andre Balazs after she was spotted cosying up to him.

Love, 45, had denied rumours that she was romantically involved with Balazs, saying that he was nothing more than an “old friend” and her “sometimes landlord”.

But their recent behaviour at Balazs’ uber-exclusive club Boom Boom Room inside the Standard Hotel suggested otherwise.

“They came to the Boom Boom Room together late Thursday night and initially went their separate ways,” the New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

“At first, Courtney was chatting with a couple of guys about her music. But eventually, she and Andre snuck out to the smoking deck together and were hugging and being touchy.

“They both seemed very sweet and genuine,” the source stated.

But when Balazs was approached by a woman he knew, Love is said to have lost it.

“When Courtney and Andre decided to call it a night and hail a cab, Andre was stopped by a woman he knew,” the source revealed.

“As soon as he started talking to her, Courtney hit the roof. It was obvious to everyone that the woman was a business associate, but not to Courtney.

“She acted like a toddler! It got so bad that the woman Andre was talking to got really embarrassed, and he had to apologize and walk away. By then, Courtney was crying and screaming.

“Andre started shouting right back at her. They eventually got into a cab, but the few people left on the street at that hour were in shock,” the source added. (ANI)

Elizabeth Taylor says she’s ””””falling apart”””” to Julie Andrews

London, May 10 (ANI): Elizabeth Taylor was one of the stars who turned up to see her fellow Dame Julie Andrews perform at the 02 Arena in London.

And in the interval, Taylor, 78, greeted ‘The Sound of Music’ star, 74, in her dressing room.

“Dame Julie, how lovely to see you,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying with mock formality as they kissed.

“The pleasure is all mine, Dame Liz. And may I say how marvellous you are looking,” replied Andrews.

Taylor retorted with a laugh, saying: “Marvellous? Look at me. I am falling apart.”

She later said that she got delayed for the show as a car accompanying hers had got a flat tyre.

However, she was determined to see her old friend performing for the first time in the capital since an operation on her vocal chords in 1997.

“Julie is a fighter – I love that,” she said.

Although in poor health, she hummed along cheerfully to Andrews singing songs from Rogers and Hammerstein.

She admitted that she felt “too tired and weak” to undergo any further operations after submitting to more than 100 in the last 25 years. (ANI)

Courtney Love fuels rumours of new romance

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Rock musician Courtney Love has fuelled rumours that she has a new man in her life after she revealed about him to her friend.

According to the New York Post, Love, 45, reportedly described the man in a leaked email she sent to her friend.

“I’m in lurve. It’s nice. Scary. I’m a great catch and he can be a bad boy but he loves me,” the Daily Star quoted her as reportedly writing in the mail.

She had previously fuelled speculation that she was dating actress Uma Thurman’s ex-boyfriend Andre Balazs.

But she brushed off reports linking her to hotelier Balazs earlier this month, insisting the tycoon is “an old friend and my sometime landlord”. (ANI)

Man electrocuted installing skylight

Police are investigating the circumstances behind the death of a 22-year-old man who was electrocuted at Port Kembla on the New South Wales south coast.

Sergeant Dave Rose from Police Media says the man was helping his 83-year-old friend with the installation of a skylight in his Wentworth Street home yesterday afternoon when the accident happened.

“Police have been told the younger man reached into the roof cavity and he grabbed a light socket which was connected to a series of wires and unfortunately he was electrocuted,” he said.

“The elderly man dialled 000 and tried in vain to resuscitate the 22-year-old. Ambulance paramedics also arrived but they could not unfortunately revive the man.”

Musharraf meets ‘good old friend’ Bush in Washington

Washington, Sep.19 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf met his ‘good old friend’ former President George Bush earlier this week, The Nation reports.

Musharaf’s close friend and former federal minister Dr. Naseem Ashraf told media persons that both former counterparts discussed several issues regarding bilateral interests and various national and international topics.

During their long talks, Musharraf told Bush that the injustice with Kashmiris and Palestinians was the prime reason behind rampant extremism in Muslim countries.

“Global peace could only be achieved by resolving the disputes of these two regions,” Ashraf quoted Musharraf, as saying.

According to Ashraf, Bush, during the meeting, expressed deep concerns over the growing extremism in Pakistan and various security issues facing the region.

Musharraf’s special bonding with Bush is not new as the former general had recently described the former US President as a ‘very good man’ and a ‘good friend’ of his.

Musharraf had said he specially liked Bush’s straight forwardness. (ANI)

Lindsay knows her house-ripping burglars

Washington, August 27 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan believes she knows the burglars who recently broke into her house in Hollywood Hills.

The ‘Mean Girls’ actress’ rented house was targeted on August 23 with the thieves taking off with the 23-year-old’s designer gear, cash and jewellery.

Lindsay’s father Michael previously said the heist was the job of “evil-doers” close to the starlet.

And now the singer is convinced the culprits knew what to look for.

“My life has been kind of in shambles considering my house was broken into and I feel really violated,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying on her Twitter page.

“I know it was not a ROBBERY. Electronics weren’t taken… just things that a certain old friend knew meant a lot to me,” she added. (ANI)

Jacko’s pal Bubbles the chimp not to attend his funeral

London, July 2 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s old friend Bubbles the chimp will not be attending his funeral.

The ape will be kept 3,000 miles away when Jackson is laid to rest in California, and it will spend the day listening to “calming flute music” at the animal sanctuary in Wauchula, Florida, where it presently lives.

“It is sad for Bubbles but it is better that he stays here,” the Sun quoted a spokesman for the Centre For Great Apes as saying.

He revealed that staff at the centre have “not said anything” to Bubbles about Jackson’s death thus far.

He, however, added: “There has been no invitation for him to attend the funeral. Maybe we’ll mark the occasion another way.”

Bubbles, who is presently 26 years old, was rescued by Jackson from a cancer research centre in 1985. It then went on to live in the singer’s house, and often wore matching outfits.

Jackson eventually gave the ape up amid fears that it was growing aggressive.

The chimp is presently much healthier than when it was Jacko’s companion, and is said to be at the heart of a Hollywood movie and book deal.

It now spends his days painting, listening to music, and playing with an older chimp called Sam. (ANI)

Pressure of 50-concerts killed Jacko, says his old pal

London, June 29 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s old friend producer and TV star David Gest believes that the pressure of 50-concert schedule killed the singer.

Gest said he was angry about the influence of mysterious Lebanese doctor Tohme R Tohme, who met the King of Pop when the singer was staying in Bahrain in 2005.

“We all have weaknesses and Michael’s was that he trusted the wrong people most of the time. He thought all people were good, which they are not,” the Sun quoted Gest as saying.

Gest said that Tohme had masterminded Michael’s mammoth run of 50 comeback concerts at London’s O2 Arena, without telling the singer the full facts.

“Michael told me he was excited about getting back on stage. I told him I was proud of him. But I really believe in my heart of hearts that the pressure of those concerts killed Michael.

“He thought there were going to be ten dates as announced. But then all of a sudden Tohme, along with Randy Phillips, president of organisers AEG, had arranged 20, 30 then 50 dates.

“Michael was being told, ‘You are going to set the world record for concerts at the O2, you are going to beat Prince’s record.’

“They knew how to feed into his ego. But when Michael realised his schedule, he began to panic. It was one show after another, with hardly any days off. He should never have been tied to so many, especially a guy who dances through more than half of his set,” he added. (ANI)

The nine-year-old was released from Doncaster Royal Infirmary overnight after undergoing two operations on his injured arm.

His 11-year-old friend and uncle is still recovering in the hospital following the incident in the former pit village of Edlington, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.

Two young brothers, aged 10 and 11, appeared at Doncaster Youth Court on Tuesday accused of their attempted murder.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The 11-year-old boy is still recovering in Doncaster Royal Infirmary after he was transferred from Sheffield Children’s Hospital on Tuesday.

“The nine-year-old boy was released from hospital overnight. Times and dates to interview the victims have yet to be decided.”

The father of the 11-year-old said that his son was too bruised to be hugged and was so traumatised by his ordeal that he cried when he saw an unfamiliar face.

He told the Daily Mirror: “We’ve been giving him loads of hugs and love. But there are only so many hugs you can give him as the poor lad is bruised to death. If you tap him on the shoulder he groans in pain.

“He’s still not eating or drinking very well. But he’s healing and doing a lot better and we’re over the moon. It could have been so much worse.”

Police were called at 2pm on Saturday when the nine-year-old boy was found wandering, covered in blood, in Auburn Road. The youngster told the people who found him where to find his uncle, who was discovered unconscious in a nearby wooded ravine.

Two British youngsters charged after “sickening” attack

London – Two brothers, as young as 10 and 11, appeared in court in Britain Tuesday charged with the attempted murder of two boys of similar age who were subjected to a “sickening” attack involving bricks, a knife and burning cigarettes.

The two victims, aged 9 and 11, are continuing to receive hospital treatment after suffering serious injuries following the attack in Doncaster, in the northern county of Yorkshire, Saturday.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has condemned what he called a “shocking incident.” Locals said the attackers, who had recently moved in with foster parents in the town, had been notorious troublemakers.

Police were alerted when the younger victim was spotted wandering in Doncaster Saturday afternoon dazed, covered in blood, without socks and shoes, and looking for his friend.

The youngster told the people who found him where to find his 11-year-old friend and uncle, who was discovered semi-conscious in a nearby wooded ravine.

Media reports, quoting residents, said they believed the boys had been hit with bricks, slashed with a knife and burned with cigarettes in a “sickening” assault during which the attackers demanded that they hand over money, their mobile phones and sneakers.

The two alleged attackers appeared before magistrates at Doncaster Youth Court Tuesday accused of attempted murder and robbery.

They were flanked by security officers but showed no emotion when the charges were read to them. They were remanded in custody until a later date. (dpa)

Rumor says Alexander the Great could be buried in Australia

Sydney, March 20 (ANI): A man has claimed that Alexander the Great, whose tomb has been missing for nearly 2,000 years, could be buried in Broome in Western Australia.

Tim Tutungis told ABC News that he first heard about the rumor from his old friend, Lou Batalis.

“We just got onto the subject of Alexander The Great’s tomb, and he said, ‘They’ll never ever find it, no matter where they look, because Alexander the Great is buried in Broome, in Western Australia’,” Tutungis said.

According to Tutungis, approximately 50 years ago, a man went into a cave in Broome and he saw some inscriptions in there that looked like ancient Greek.

He reported it to the government, and when officials went to the site, they confirmed there were some inscriptions there, he added.

When the officials enquired from the Greek community if any one can read ancient Greek, Louis Batalis volunteered and defined the inscriptions as saying, in ancient Greek, ‘Alexander the Great’.

“The government did say to him at that time, ‘You didn’t see this, OK, this never happened’,” said Tutungis.

Alexander the Great died on June 11, 323 BC, probably from malaria, alcoholism or poisoning.

One traditionally accepted story says that his body was placed in two gold caskets in a gold carriage. Another says his body was preserved in a clay jar filled with honey and that this was placed in a glass coffin.

Some historians say that Alexander’s general and friend, Ptolemy, stole the body and took it to Alexandria, while others say Roman Emperor Caligula looted the tomb and stole Alexander’s breastplate.

According to some sources, Emperor Septimius Severus closed Alexander’s tomb about 200 AD, and little is known of the body’s whereabouts after that.

Tutungis said that he is 99 percent convinced Batalis told him the truth, because people “have looked everywhere” for Alexander’s grave, to no avail.

“I drew my own conclusion because the war of the Macedonians ended up in India and I assumed that some of the soldiers went back to Macedonia on foot,” he said.

“Some of the soldiers must have caught a ship. Why can’t we say that Alexander did catch a ship; they lost their way in the treacherous ways up there,” he added.

“Look where India is, look where Broome is; a ship could easily get wrecked in Broome,” he further added. (ANI)

BJP acted troublesome with “Hindutva agenda”: BJD

Bhubaneshwar, March 17 (ANI): Having already deserted its old friend Bharatiya Janata Party just ahead of Lok Sabha elections, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday accused the BJP of attempting to implement “Hindutva agenda” in Orissa state.

The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD cherished political relations with Hindutva-minded BJP for nearly a decade in Orissa.

evealing the reasons that compelled his party to snap ties with the BJP, the BJD supreme and Orissa’s chief minister Naveen Patnaik revealed that the relations started getting sour for last six months.

“They (BJP) were creating disturbances for last six months. When government took bold steps to check trouble they started opposing,” said Naveen Patnaik told an election rally at Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

“BJP tried to implement its Hindutva agenda in Orissa after realising that its vote base was declining. This was not acceptable to us,” said BJD MP Pyari Mohan Mohaptra, considered to be the main strategist of Patnaik.

Claiming that BJD was not responsible for the break up of the alliance, Mohapatra alleged that BJP had made up its mind earlier to quit coalition to pursue its ‘communal aganda’.

“I am not responsible for the break up. I just placed the real picture before the BJD supremo on the dismal performance of the saffron party which was supposed to go to polls under Naveen Patnaik’s leadership,” he said.

Mohapatra, often blamed by BJP leaders for the break-up, said the saffron party had no option but to work on its ‘Hindutva agenda’ to save its vote base.

The bureaucrat-turned-politician commented that BJP’s popularity graph could be gauged from its poor show in recent civic polls. (ANI)

Facebook gets celebrity-centred makeover

London, March 5 (ANI): Keeping a track of celebrities and causes just got easier – all thanks to Facebook.

The popular social networking site has made changes to its services, which would soon make it simple to keep track of famous stars.

Facebook has announced that members can view the new home page design from March 11, which include increased friend limit and a rephrasing of the status update question.

The site’s 175 million users would be able to follow profile pages of celebrities, organisations and causes while remaining updated about their friends.

“This means that you can find out that Oprah is reading a book backstage before a show just as you would see that your friend uploaded new photos from her trip to Europe,” Sky News quoted founder Mark Zuckerberg as saying.

“You can decide you no longer want to get updates from your old friend from high school who you rarely talk to, or you can filter the stream to only see updates about your family members,” he added in a blog post.

The development was speculated to be a move made to keep up with rival microblogging site Twitter that boats of various high profile members including US President Barack Obama, singer Lindsay Lohan.

TechCrunch blogger Erick Schonfeld said: “Facebook is trying to shore itself up as the foundation for a living, rapid-fire web where the line between private messages and public content is blurred,” he wrote.

“Under no circumstances does it want to cede the thought stream of its users to Twitter.” (ANI)
