Hazlewood poised to become Australia’s youngest ODI player

Sydney, June 11(ANI): New South Wales fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is poised to become the youngest debutant in Australia’s one-day international history after he was named in the national team to play Ireland and England.

Hazlewood was called in place of fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, who has been ruled out of the first leg of the England tour this month due to an elbow injury suffered during the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

The towering NSW player will be 19 years and 160 days old when Australia plays its first game of the tour, against Ireland in Dublin next Thursday.

He boasts an impressive junior resume, which includes a starring role in Australia’s under-19 World Youth Cup final win over Pakistan in January.

Talking about his selection, Hazlewood said: “It’s all pretty exciting it’s all happening pretty quickly.”

A right-arm fast bowler, Hazlewood’s idol was Oz fast bowling legend, Glenn McGrath.

“I’m probably about the same height (as McGrath), but hopefully not the pigeon legs like him,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Hazlewood, as saying.

“I’m just hoping to learn a lot from the (Australian) fast bowlers over there and maybe get a little time with the ball,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australian selectors Chairman Andrew Hilditch said that losing Johnson was disappointing, but it created an opportunity for Hazlewood to earn some valuable experience.

“It’s a very exciting time for Australian cricket as we continue to take opportunities to expose our talented cricketers to international cricket. Josh has been identified as one of a crop of young fast bowlers who NSP (National Selection Panel) consider can impact for Australia at international level,” Hilditch said. (ANI)

Raina promises a field day

To say that being in-charge of the Indian team is one of the most daunting propositions in world cricket may not quite seem like overstating the fact. Of the many responsibilities an Indian cricket captain is faced with, it is often the relentless and hard-to-please media back home, which proves to be a stiffer and unforgiving challenge than any opposition he comes across on the field.

At least, Suresh Raina, who will become the 20 th ODI captain for India-and the first from Uttar Pradesh- in Zimbabwe, passed his first test satisfactorily, displaying a calm exterior during his first-ever pre-tour press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

When asked-on a number of occasions-if regular Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-who also leads Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise that Raina represents-had passed down any tips, the 24-year-old left-hander only revealed that he was asked to keep things simple. And while it remains to be seen whether Raina does heed his skipper’s advice when it comes to the action in Zimbabwe or not, he did stick to it during the press-briefing by keeping his responses ‘simple’ and cliched.

“It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” got reiterated by Raina at least four times the number of international games that his young pace-attack has managed between them for India.

And his opinions remained the same regarding both his personal goals as well as that of his young team.

Getting the opportunity at such a young age though did come as a pleasant surprise, believed Raina, and he expected his team to live up to their billing of the second-best ODI team in the world. “It was always a dream but it is a great responsibility. The seniors don’t often take breaks from the game and now that they have, it is up to the bench-strength to rise and do well. A good performance here will go a long way in enhancing their future opportunities,” he explained.

While almost the entire Indian team faced the wrath of the media following their disappointing exit from the World T20, Raina was the only one left unscathed. After all he was the only Indian batsman to have totaled three-figures in the tournament, finishing with over 200 runs, including a century against South Africa. He believed that it was up to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and make the most of the seniors’ absence.

“They have all scored a lot of runs in the IPL and in domestic cricket but the onus is on them to replicate that form for India now,” said Raina.

Of the many criticisms that were stacked against the Indian team, it was their poor fielding that came under the scanner the most. But Raina believed his young team would prove a more athletic unit in the field. “We will run harder and are fitter. And if we score a total of 240-250, we will make it look like a 280+ target with our fielding,” said the new Indian captain. With conditions expected to assist fast bowling, Raina believed his team’s strength would be his pace-bowling department led by the inexperienced lot of Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda. “We have bowlers like Umesh who have pace and can trouble the opposition batsmen in those conditions,” he said.

Unlike Dhoni or most of his predecessors, Raina at least signed off on an optimistic note rather than sticking to a well-rehearsed diplomatic tone, insisting that there were no weaknesses in his side and that returning with the trophy was his sole objective as an Indian captain.

England should thank imports for reaching T20 World Cup finals

Sydney, May 15 (ANI): England must thank South Africa born Kevin Pietersen and Irish Eoin Morgan for giving the team their best chance of winning their first World Cup.

England has never won an ICC event, but has reached the finals of the World Twenty20 in Barbados with the help of these two players.

England has qualified for the first time since 2004 for a final. Six years ago they were defeated by the West Indies in the Champions Trophy final on home soil, and they have repeatedly failed in World Cups, World Twenty20s and Champions Trophy tournaments since 1975.

Pietersen has been phenomenal so far, striking 201 runs at 67.00, the best average of any of the 19 batsmen to have scored more than 100 runs in the tournament, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Before the second semi-final between Australia and Pakistan, Pietersen was third and Morgan sixth in the tournament’s leading run-scorers list, while another South African-turned-English player, Craig Kieswetter, was seventh.

Morgan’s 168 runs at 33.60 has proved vital for England. He was the rock of their innings in the first match against the West Indies (55), then saved them from disaster with 45 against Ireland, and his team-high 40 was enough to eliminate New Zealand from the Super Eight stage.

He is the only player to have scored ODI centuries for two countries (Ireland and England). (ANI)

Kiwi pacer Bond retires from all forms of cricket

Christchurch, May 14 (ANI): One of New Zealand best fast bowlers in recent times, Shane Bond, 34, announced his retirement from all cricket today after competing in the Twenty20 world championship in the Caribbean.

“I know the time is right for me to step down. I have given it everything when playing for the Black Caps. I will miss the camaraderie because it has been a privilege to play along such a great bunch of guys who are so committed to do their best for New Zealand,” the New Zealand Herald quoted Bond, as saying in a statement.

“I want to thank my wife Tracey, my family, my manager Leanne McGoldrick and all those at New Zealand Cricket, Canterbury, my club Old Boys Collegians and the Players Association”s Heath Mills for all their help and support over the years,” he added.

“Playing with pride for the Black Caps over the years has meant so much to me. I dreamed of playing for New Zealand when I was six. The reality of what has unfolded was more than I could ever hope for and I have been extremely proud to represent New Zealand,” Bond said.

I am going to miss a lot of this, but I know now is the time to bow out. I am very keen at some stage to put something back into the game in New Zealand,” he said.

In nearly nine years of international cricket, Bond played just 18 tests, 80 one-day internationals and 20 Twenty20 internationals. He took 87 test wickets at an excellent average of 22.09, and 147 ODI wickets at 20.88.

His individual highlight was his haul of six for 19 against Australia at the 2003 World Cup when he destroyed the eventual champions” powerful batting lineup.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said: “We are lucky to have had a player of his stature donning the Black Cap. For me personally, it is a big loss, I think he could still be a really good player for us for some time to come. But I know how much effort he puts in to stay on the park.”

Vettori hoped Bond would return as a coach to help out future New Zealand fast bowlers.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Justin Vaughan said: “We shall all miss Shane in the international arena. His speed and ability struck fear into batsmen from every team in world cricket. He has been a real match winner. Shane has had an inspirational presence about him and has been a great role model for younger team mates.” (ANI)

Lumb gets central contract to play home matches for England

Melbourne, Apr 21 (ANI): Hampshire opener Michael Lumb, who has already made it into the England squad for the Twenty20 World Cup, now joins a group including the 11 elite players on 12-month central contracts and the seven with second-tier deals.

Lumb is the only new player in England’s 27-man squad announced on Tuesday for the team’s home matches this year.

England will play two Tests against Bangladesh in May followed by five ODI matches against Australia, The Age reports.

England then hosts Bangladesh again for three one-day matches before playing Pakistan for four Tests, two Twenty20s and five one-day matches.

“The England Performance Squad is designed to allow the selectors to monitor the development of international players and better prepare them for the demands of the international game,” national selector Geoff Miller said.

“The selectors can name up to 30 players in the EPS, but we have decided to keep three places vacant at present in order to give ourselves greater flexibility.

“We will reserve the right to add further players to the squad if their performances in domestic cricket merit it,” Miller added. (ANI)

Oram relaxed about IPL ditch

Hamilton, Mar 27(ANI): New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram, who has been reportedly replaced by his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings citing his injury, has said that he has not been officially informed about any such decision.

Oram tore his patella tendon during the first ODI against Australia early this month, but hoped to be able to return for the later rounds of the IPL.

“I haven’t heard it officially anywhere, but that’s fairly typical of Indian communication, but I”ve heard I”ve been replaced. Chennai did not want to roll the dice as to whether I would be fit in time,” The New Zealand Herald quoted Oram, as saying.

Despite the reports, the 31-year-old has admitted that he is not worried about the situation.

“The IPL is great from a personal point of view and great for a financial point of view, but one of my big career goals is to win a world title for my country and I think we have a great chance to win the World Twenty20 this year,” he added.

Oram further said he has recovered from his injury, and hopes to start intensive training soon. (ANI)

Flintoff admits to missing Test cricket

Dubai, Mar 27(ANI): Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff says he is missing playing Test cricket.

Flintoff, who had an operation last August after England regained The Ashes, is not expected to play until July at the earliest after undergoing further surgery in January.

“I’m retired. I’ve retired from Test cricket. I am missing playing Test cricket, but every player who’s retired will say the same thing. They’re always willing to play again. I’d love to still be able to play,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Flintoff, as saying.

“It was a decision that had to be made. My last Test match was at The Oval, me on the podium having played a part in winning the Ashes. I’ll sit back and watch it from now on,” he added.

The 32-year-old further hopes to pick up a bat next month and get back on the field with Lancashire by the end of July.

He believes the next step after Lancashire, would be getting back into the English dressing room.

“It will be back to normal. Absolutely. There”s no done deals, but I”m confident of it. I”ll get back in the Lancashire side first and I believe that, playing well and being fit, I get to England’s one-day and Twenty20 side,” Flintoff added.

Flintoff had announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the 2009 Ashes series, but made himself available for future commitments in ODI and Twenty20 international games. (ANI)

Naming captain for ICC T20 World Cup upto PCB boss Butt: Mohsin Khan

Lahore, Mar.19 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chief selector Mohsin Khan has said that the final decision regarding naming the captain for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Championship would be taken by the board chairman Ijaz Butt.

Talking to reporters after meeting Butt, Khan said naming the skipper for the upcoming important tournament was upto the PCB chief.

“I met the chairman after meeting the other members of the selection committee. We also discussed the possible captain for the mega event. He is the right person to name the captain because it is up to him,” The Nation quoted Khan, as saying.

The PCB has already announced a 15-member squad for the ICC World T20 Championship to be played in West Indies from April April 30 to May 16 but withheld naming the captain for the coveted tournament.

The PCB has been left with not much choice, as it has banned Test and one-day captain Mohammed Yousuf for an indefinite period and also slapped a hefty fine on Shahid Afridi for his ‘misadventure’ during the tour Down Under.

However, the flamboyant all rounder has emerged as the top contender for captaincy.
The only negative point for Afridi is his involvement in the ugly ball tampering incident in the last ODI against Australia in Perth, where he was captaining the team in the absence of Mohammad Yousuf. (ANI)

Afridi emerging frontrunner for Pakistan’s T20 captaincy

Lahore, Mar 15(ANI): Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has emerged as the top contender for the Pakistan team’s captaincy for the forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup, starting from April 30 in the Caribbean.

According to reports, Afridi met Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt on Saturday, and they are believed to have discussed the captaincy issue.

Butt exchanged views with Afridi on some terms and conditions of captaincy and also asked about his response in case any one among Abdul Razzaq or Misbah got the coveted post, The Dawn reports.

The only negative point for Afridi is his involvement in the ugly ball tampering incident in the last ODI against Australia in Perth, where he was captaining the team in the absence of Mohammad Yousuf.

For the offence, the 30-year-old was banned for two Twenty20 matches by the ICC match referee, and then the PCB imposed a cash fine of Rs three million on him recently.

Before the incident, the PCB had appointed him as captain for the tournament. (ANI)

‘Over the moon’ Smith says up to Test challenge against New Zealand

Sydney, Mar 13(ANI): New South Wales all-rounder Steve Smith, who has been included in Australia’s 14-man squad for the upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand, has declared himself ready for the challenge of Test cricket.

Smith scored 772 runs at 77.2 and captured 21 wickets, including a career-best seven-wicket haul, at 44.38 this year, and reckons that his remarkable domestic season would help him cope with the pressure of Test cricket.

“To take seven-for today was a big confidence booster going over to New Zealand and you never know what is going to happen over there. I think I am up to the challenge,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Smith, as saying.

“It has been a long season for NSW and the last few games have been pretty good and I am a bit excited about the prospect of going to New Zealand and hopefully we will do well,” he added.

Smith, already a member of the Australian Twenty20 and ODI squads at the tender age of 20, said he is ‘over the moon’ since he learned of his inclusion on Tuesday night.

“It is what you grow up as a kid wanting to do and if get that chance to crack it and play for Australia it is a dream come true,” Smith said.

“I guess there is a couple of days now until I get down there and see where the selectors are at and see what is going to happen,” he added.

Smith was earlier called up to the Australian Test side to cover for spinner Nathan Hauritz, who was in doubt for Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, but Hauritz managed to recover. (ANI)

Indian captain Mahendra S Dhoni has been banned for two ODI’s for the team’s slow over-rate during the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka in Nagpur on Friday, 18th December 2009.

The nail biting 2nd ODI took 45 more minutes after the scheduled finish time due to the frequent discussions among the Indian players and the Captain during the closing stages of the match, prompting the ICC to ban Dhoni.

The decision was taken by match referee Jeff Crowe, considering the huge extra time the Indians players took to finish their 50 overs.

In the absence of Dhoni, Sehwag will lead Team India in Cuttack and Kolkata. A

The 3rd ODI will be held in Cuttack on 21st December 2009, while the fourth ODI will be held in Kolkata on 24th December 2009.

Flintoff to coach UAE cricket team for six months

London, Sep 18(ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will be coaching the United Arab Emirates national team during the period that he recovers from knee surgery.

“A partnership has been agreed with Dubai Sports City to use their gym and facilities as a base for his rehabilitation. In return he will be carrying out some coaching for the UAE national team over the next six months,” The Independent quoted Andrew Chandler, Flintoff’s agent, as saying.

Consistently rated amongst the top international all-rounders in both ODI and Test cricket, Flintoff had announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the 2009 Ashes series, but made himself available for future commitments in One Day International and Twenty20 International matches.

Flintoff’s career has also been marred with injuries due to his heavy frame and bowling action. He recently had surgery on his knee, which had been troubling him for long, and last week he had moved to Dubai, where he hopes to open a cricket academy.

“His partnership with Sports City will also help raise the profile of his Dubai academy,” Chandler added. (ANI)

Australia regains number-one position in ODI Championship

Dubai, Sep 18 (ANI): Australia has regained top spot in the ICC ODI Championship after going 6-0 up with one match to play in the ODI series in England.
Ricky Ponting’s side beat the home team by 111 runs at Trent Bridge on Thursday and in the process has moved ahead of South Africa by a fraction of a ratings point.

Australia needs to win the one remaining ODI in the series to stay top and thus head into the ICC Champions Trophy as the number-one-ranked one-day side in the world.

An England win in the final ODI of the series would consign Australia back down to third place.
As a result of Australia’s rise, India drops to third position while England stays in seventh position, three ratings points behind New Zealand in sixth.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 gets underway in South Africa on 22 September and with just a single ratings point separating Australia in first position from India in third place, it looks like a rankings battle is on the cards over the next couple of weeks. (ANI)

Tendulkar dedicates his 44th ODI century to Dungarpur

Mumbai, Sep. 16 (ANI): Condoling the death of former BCCI chairmen Raj Singh Dungarpur, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar dedicated his 44th ODI century to the man who selected him for international cricket in 1989.

“Wherever Rajbhai is he was definitely watching us yesterday and feeling happy for Indian team for having won yesterday. I’d like to take this opportunity to say that yesterday’s 100 was for Raj Bhai. We miss you Rajbhai,” Tendulkar said.

Dungarpur, 73, was suffering from Alzheimer’s and had died on Saturday.

Dugarpur belonged to the Dungarpur royal family and also played first class cricket for Rajasthan.

Tendulkar urged officials of Cricket Club of India, where Dungarpur played and also presided as president for almost a decade and a half, to name one of its gate after him.

“I know that here, CCI have named rooms after the ex-cricketers, the library is also named after a cricketer. Just like Prof. Shetty, I would like to request the management of CCI, I think the appropriate thing to do would be to name the main gate after Rajbhai because that is where I think is the right place for Rajbhai and I would strongly urge that,” said Tendulkar.

Veteran cricketers, Bapu Nadkarni, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil, Karsan Ghavri, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Milind Rege and Ajit Agarkar were also present at the condolence meeting. (ANI)

Ponting’s 27th ton helps Australia beat England in fifth ODI

Nottingham (UK), Sep.16 (ANI): Ricky Ponting scored a brilliant 126 of 109 balls to keep Australia in the hunt for a 7-0 whitewash of their one-day series against England, leading his side to a four-wicket victory in the fifth one-day international at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

Ponting’s 27th ton in ODIs included three sixes and 14 fours, as Australia raced to 302 for six wickets with 10 balls to spare in reply to England’s total of 299 from their 50 overs.

He was well supported by deputy Michael Clarke, who reached 52 off 64.

Irishman Eoin Morgan’s maiden half-century steered England to their best score of the series in a dead rubber after Australia clinched the series 4-0 at Lord’s on Saturday.

Mitchell Johnson brought up the winning runs with a six off Ryan Sidebottom to remain unbeaten on 18, while Cameron White was not out 24.

Poor fielding frustrated England captain Andrew Struass, who demanded improvement from his batsmen after the first four matches.

“Our batters went out and played with a much more bold approach and that paid dividends today. The fielding was poor and that’s something that there should be no excuse for, we do a lot of work on the fielding and we should be better than that,” Fox Sports quoted Strauss, as saying.

The tourists rested Brett Lee, who claimed five wickets in the previous match, replacing him with fellow pacer Peter Siddle.

England brought in Mascarenhas for Luke Wright, who was hit on the toe on Monday while batting against a bowling machine set to mimic Lee’s inswinging yorkers which proved so effective last weekend.(ANI)

Tendulkar scores 44th ODI ton in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sep.14 (ANI): India’s Sachin Tendulkar scored his 44th ton in one-day internationals on Monday.

The new landmark came off 91 balls against Sri Lanka in the finals of the Compaq trilateral series being held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The ton came in the 33rd over of the Indian innings. At the time of the filing of this report, India had scored 195 for the loss of Rahul Dravid’s wicket. Dravid was caught of the bowling of left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya for his individual score of 39. Tendulkar and Dhoni have completed a century partnership of 104 balls. (ANI)

Pietersen making slow recovery from Achilles surgery

London, Sep 14(ANI): England batsman Kevin Pietersen has said that he is making a slow and steady recovery from the Achilles tendon surgery and is targeting a return to action during England’s South Africa.

“I saw a couple of surgeons during the week and it is very slow at the moment. I’ve got an open wound in my leg and I’m only truly hoping to get back in time for the tour to South Africa,” The Mirror quoted Pietersen, as saying.

The 29-year-old has suffered complications in his recovery from the Achilles surgery that forced him out of the last three Ashes Tests, the seven match ODI series against Australia and the Champions Trophy.

Following absence of experienced players like Pietersen, all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and wicketkeeper Matt Prior due to injury, the inexperienced team is in dire straits in the seven match ODI series, where Australia have taken an unassailable 4-0 lead. (ANI)

Pak-New Zealand ODI series to be held in UAE

Lahore, Sep 14 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ijaz Butt has said that he has had constructive talks with Emirates Cricket Board officials about holding a proposed ODI series against New Zealand there later this year.

Butt, who is in London, said that he would officially announce the venues for the four One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches on Monday after returning home.

“The venues, 90 per cent, would be Abu Dhabi and Dubai once again,” The News quoted Butt, as saying.

New Zealand has refused to tour Pakistan for the scheduled series in October this year because of the volatile security situation in the country.

However, it has agreed to play the matches at neutral venues and host the three Tests in New Zealand in November-December.

Pakistan has already played a one-day series with Australia in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in April-May this year.

Butt visit to the Emirates came after differences erupted over the hosting fees being demanded by the Abu Dhabi and Dubai cricket bodies.

After meeting with the Emirates board officials, Butt travelled to London where he held two rounds of talks with Giles Clarke who heads the Wales and English cricket Board and also leads the special task force of the International Cricket Council formed to explore possibilities for resumption of international cricket in Pakistan. White hopeful of ODI series ‘whitewash’ against England

London, Sep 12(ANI): Australian all-rounder Cameron White reckons that Australia can finish their Ashes-losing England tour with a flourish by defeating their arch rivals seven-nil in the on-going ODI series.

Australia lost the five-Test campaign 2-1, but they are leading 3-0 in the seven match ODI series.

“At the moment if we keep playing good, consistent cricket, keep bowling and fielding well, there is no reason why not,” The Daily Telegraph quoted White, as saying.

“In saying that, winning seven one-dayers against a really good side is a pretty strange thing to happen. But, I am not saying that it can’t. We want to keep the momentum going and I don’t think we are playing at our total best right now,” he added.

White further said that Australian team still has some areas where they needed to improve and also emphasised that they cant write-off the England squad, as they will bounce back at some stage.

“There are still probably some areas that we think we can improve in, so there are things we need to work on to get better for these four games. Then, come four games’ time, we are hopefully at our peak,” White said.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Ricky Ponting would comeback to join the squad after his post-Ashes break. (ANI)

England rest Collingwood and Anderson for fourth ODI

London, Sep 11 (ANI): Despite facing a three nil scoreline in the seven match ODI series against Australia, England have rested all-rounder Paul Collingwood and paceman James Anderson ahead of the must-win match at Lord’s on Saturday.

Collingwood and Anderson have opted to take short breaks for three and two matches respectively.

Collingwood will comeback for the final match of the series at Chester-le-Street next weekend, while Anderson will join for the second of back-to-back day-nighters at Trent Bridge, The Independent reports.

After the seven-match series, England will leave for South Africa for the Champions Trophy. They also have a tour of South Africa scheduled, which comprises four Tests and five ODIs. (ANI)
