‘Beasted’ Broad backs ‘fearless’ England for Ashes, World Cup glory

London, June 11(ANI): England fast bowler Stuart Broad has said that he spent his time out of the national team on working on his fitness, and announced that he is now prepared for the Ashes and the World Cup.

Broad, who was dropped for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, was named in the 13-man ODI squad to play England in a five-match series.

“I’ve spent the last few weeks at Loughborough getting a serious beasting in the gym — it’s been knackering, but I feel stronger and have put on about a kilogram of muscle. This isn’t a short-term thing, this is so I am still going strong by the end of the Ashes in January and through to the World Cup,” The Sun quoted Broad, as saying.

“By being dropped for that reason, I at least have the confidence that I”m in the long-term plans,” he added.

The 23-year-old said that he was unhappy with the selectors’ decision to drop him for the Bangladesh Test series.

“It was a hard phone call to take when the selectors told me. They gave their reasons and were adamant it wasn”t form. So if I”m taking wickets during an Ashes win in Australia and the World Cup, it will have been worth it,” Broad said.

He further insisted that the current England one-day side is different from the one that lost 6-1 to Australia last summer.

“These five games against Australia this summer are important — it”s crucial we continue the momentum we”ve built up in one-day cricket. Now we back ourselves and each other to play fearless cricket. We look a different team and that”s why we won the World Twenty20,” Broad said.

“We want to keep beating Australia. We have the Ashes and won that Twenty20 final — it”s hugely important we keep getting these little things over them,” he added. (ANI)

Yuvraj’s form a window for Dravid?

India’s disastrous run in the World T20 in the Caribbean and Yuvraj Singh’s indifferent form might have opened a window of hope for Rahul Dravid’s inclusion back in the limited overs side, according to sources. Some of the selectors are seriously mulling over bringing the former India skipper back to the ODI fold with an eye on next year’s World Cup, according to a source in the BCCI. “Yuvraj Singh looked out of sorts in the Caribbean,” a selector told The Sunday Express on conditions of anonymity. “He is a talented cricketer but he is not doing justice to his talent — maybe he needs to return to the drawing board.”

According to the selector, the left-hander could get the axe for next month’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, and that might open up a slot in the middle order. “Asia Cup is going to be the litmus test for the team,” he said, “and after the Caribbean debacle, the young players will be under pressure. So experience is needed to calm the nerves, and also help (skipper) Mahendra Singh Dhoni in decision-making.”

Dravid, according to the selector, is “still in our scheme of things as far as ODIs are concerned. I should say he has a fifty-fifty chance of returning to the team for Asia Cup.” Incidentally, Dravid was brought back to the ODI squad after last year’s World T20 but was dumped after just two series despite a couple of good knocks in the Champions Trophy.

Styris determined to cement place in Kiwi Twenty20 squad

Wellington, Apr 24 (ANI): New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris is determined to cement his place in the playing eleven at the 2010 ICC Twenty20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies.

Styris is not about to take anything for granted, as he is aware that despite having been part of the squad for the previous two tournaments, as well as after a successful return to the ODI squad against Australia in March, he is still not back in the Twenty20 line-up.

“I didn”t make it for the home season, so at no stage have I thought I am in the playing XI,” said the 34-year-old Styris.

“I have to go out and put good performances on the board, otherwise I will find myself sitting watching these games, which is not what I want,” he added.

Styris”s inclusion in the T20 format of the game would be a natural step forward, as he had forced his way into the ODI lineup.

The New Zealand cricket team is taking a full-strength team to the West Indies that departs today.

Styris, a veteran of 29 tests from 2002 until his retirement from that form three years ago, 165 ODIs dating back to 1999 and 22 Twenty20s has been an in-and-out figure in the national side in the last couple of years.

“The selectors, over the last 12 to 18 months, have shown in their view. I am not in the Twenty20 side, so I have got to change that, whether I think I should be or not. It”s up to me to go out and try and change their opinion,” said Styris.

New Zealand plays the first game of the tournament against Sri Lanka in Georgetown, Guyana, on April 30. (ANI)

Voges replaces injured Haddin in Australia ODI squad

Melbourne, Sep.1 (ANI): Australia’s cricket selectors have added West Australian middle order batsman Adam Voges to the Australia one-day squad on the tour of England.

Voges, 32, replaces injured wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, who had surgery on a fractured finger last week.

“With Brad Haddin’s injury, the NSP has taken the opportunity to add Adam Voges to Australia’s squad for the seven one-day internationals against England,” selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said in a statement released on Monday.

“Adam will now stay with the squad for the remainder of the VB Tour of England before travelling with the team to the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Hilditch, as saying. (ANI)

Akhtar fails to appear for fitness test, damages chances of making it to national squad

Karachi, July 16 (ANI): Shoaib Akhtar has failed to appear for a fitness test which would have helped him reserve his place in the national team for the limited over series in Sri Lanka.

Acting chief selector Wasim Bari said Akhtar skipped fitness tests on Monday and Tuesday.

Bari said Akhtar had informed the board that his mother was unwell, and therefore, he was unable to leave Islamabad.

Bari has made it clear that he wanted Akhtar to bowl for a session of 30 to 45 minutes to assess his fitness before he could be included in the one-day squad for the series against Sri Lanka.

He would be visiting Sri Lanka soon to consult captain Younis Khan and coach Intikhab Alam on the composition of the ODI squad, The Dawn reports.

It would be very hard for Akhtar to stage a comeback in the national team after ignoring the much important fitness tests.

The 35-year-old pacer had recently claimed he still has many years of cricket left in him and is 100 percent fit to play.

However, it is highly unlikely that PCB chief Ijaz Butt would approve Akhtar’s selection without a fitness test. (ANI)

Clark, Lee can’t help Australia in must-win Port Elizabeth one-day clash

Port Elizabeth, Apr 13 (ANI): The Australian new-ball pair of Stuart Clark and Brett Lee have returned to the squad, but neither will be of any help to skipper Ricky Ponting in Monday’s must-win one-day clash here with South Africa.

Lee, who is in Port Elizabeth training with his IPL team, met Australian coach Tim Nielsen on Saturday and will join the Australian ODI squad on April 18 when they fly from Johannesburg to Dubai for a series against Pakistan.

Clark, who withdrew from the first Test against South Africa in Perth in December with an elbow complaint, will join the Australians on Monday, replacing the injured Brett Geeves.

However the 33-year-old Clark is unlikely to hop straight into action. Victorian fast-medium bowler Shane Harwood, 35, will be the one to come into the side, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

After watching his side concede 6-289 in Thursday’s game three in Cape Town, Ponting admitted he needed more than just Mitchell Johnson (4-34) punching holes in South Africa’s middle order.

“Mitch has been outstanding in both forms of the game,” Ponting said.

“We need other guys to have an impact through the innings . . . We need to be able to bowl a lot of dot balls and keep the batsman on strike,” he added.

Queensland pacer Laughlin eyeing Oz ODI berth

Durban (South Africa), Apr.1 (ANI): Carpenter and pace bowler Ben Laughlin is hoping to make his one-day international debut some time in April in South Africa.

Just a year ago, the Melbourne-born Queenslander was ready to give up on his hopes of playing state cricket.

“I had a decent grade summer (in Brisbane in 2007-08) and I didn’t really feel like I was getting anywhere,” Laughlin said ahead of Friday’s opening ODI match against South Africa.

“I had pretty much had enough of cricket and then, I was lucky enough to get called in for the last Shield game (in March 2008).

“I went alright in that and then got a Bulls contract this year and I was pretty stoked to get that.

“Then I got picked in the first one-day game which was probably even more of a shock and then played them all year long (taking 23 wickets at 14.86) and ended up here.

“It’s bizarre.

“Hopefully I’ll get a game along the way somewhere (in the five-match series).

“Even if I don’t play, I’m still having a pretty good time. I’m living the dream,” Fox Sports quoted Laughlin, as saying.

Laughlin, who opened the bowling for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria, was shocked to be told before the match that he was part of the national Twenty20/ODI squad for the tour of South Africa.

Last week, the son of former Test all-rounder Trevor Laughlin made his T20 International debut at Centurion, taking 1-32 from his four overs in Australia’s 17-run loss.

“I’ve had a few text messages and emails from people staying up until the wee hours of the morning watching us. Everyone is pretty pumped about it all,” Laughlin said.

“I had an email from dad. He was very excited. He enjoyed my bouncers.”

Laughlin has been mentored by former Australian swing bowler Adam Dale.

“Getting to bowl to Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke is a really big thrill,” he said.

“Just hanging around with the guys and just talking to (bowling coach) Troy Cooley and all the other bowlers and picking up knowledge that way, it has been really exciting.

Laughlin left school after Year 11 and has plenty of life experience in his CV before making a late arrival to big-time cricket.

“I’ve been working full-time for almost nine years as a carpenter so long service is coming up soon,” he says.

“It really makes me appreciate being paid to pay cricket.

“It’s a lot more enjoyable than nailing in nails and things like that.” (ANI)

Pak to name ODI squad for Oz series after April 1

Karachi, Mar 24 (ANI): Pakistan is likely to name its 15-man squad for the one-day series against Australia after the conclusion of the National One-day Championship on April 1.

Coach Intikhab Alam said that after mutual consent it has been more or less decided that the selectors will wait till the end of the domestic one-day tournament before naming the squad for the ODI series to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from April 22-May 7.

Pakistan will play five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 game against Australia, The Dawn reported.

Alam said the team management would give its input on the line-up for the series after assessing the performance of players in the domestic event.

“It is better to wait for a few days and see how the players perform in the domestic tournament before naming the national team,” said Alam. (ANI)
