Internet still an ‘unaffordable’ option, says Queen

London, March 8 (ANI): Queen Elizabeth II has praised the achievements in the field of science and technology but pointed out that the Internet remained an “unaffordable option” for much part of the world.

The British monarch made the reference while delivering her Commonwealth Day message that is set to be a part of the annual Observance of Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

“Advances in telecommunications are having a marked economic effect on people from developing nations in the Commonwealth, helping to transform small to medium-sized businesses,” the Daily Express quoted the Queen, as head of the Commonwealth, as saying.

“The internet is playing an important part in helping to nurture these fledgling markets but, as yet, it still remains an unaffordable option for too many of our Commonwealth citizens,” she added. (ANI)

Fathers happy with lesser attention on Father’s Day than mums on Mother’s Day

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Although dads get less attention on Father’s Day than moms do on Mother’s Day, they are still satisfied with it, says an expert.

A psychology lecturer Nicole Gilbert Cote at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst insists that the part of the reason seems to be that moms expect to get an off from their stereotypical household chores such as cooking and cleaning up, while dads don’t expect any such option.

National Retail Federation, a Washington, D.C.-based trade group said that fathers’ low expectations make shoppers spend less money on them than the moms.

“Dad is a little more laid-back and easier to shop for,” National Geographic News quoted the federation spokesperson Kathy Grannis, as saying.

“His gifts usually range from a simple tie for work to a new spatula for the grill, all of which can make dad very happy,” she added.

However, Mother’s Day gifts tend to be more luxurious such as jewels, flowers, a trip to the spa, and dinner at a restaurant.

The most popular gift for dads along with neckties is a greeting card.

Greeting cards company Hallmark revealed that an estimated 110 million cards are sent on Father’s Day.

Father’s Day originated from Spokane, Washington, where Sonora Smart-Dodd was one of six children being raised by a single dad.

Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon she heard at church, she wanted to honor her father. So, she encouraged local churches to institute the first Father’s Day observance in 1909.

The idea caught on, and Hallmark started printing Father’s Day cards in the 1920s. (ANI)

UN rights chief honours witnesses at Rwanda tribunals

Geneva – The United Nations human rights chief thanked Tuesday the witnesses who came forth and gave testimony during the war crimes tribunals for the genocide in Rwanda 15 years ago.

“I would like to pay homage to the witnesses,” said Navi Pillay, who was a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She said the “truth fosters reconciliation.”

Pillay was speaking at an observance ceremony at the UN’s Geneva headquarters, before an inauguration of an exhibition called A 100 Nights, which focused on the period of the genocide.

At least 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed during the mass slaughter in Rwanda in 1994.

The criminal tribunals were set up shortly afterwards and led to the first indictment against a head of government for his role in a genocide. Jean Kambanda, prime minister during the genocide, was given a life sentence in 1998, which he serves in Mali.

Pillay quoted the British 18th century thinker Edmund Burke, that evil triumphs when good men to do nothing, stressing the importance of intervention both before and after a serious crime.

However, she said the she hoped the International Criminal Court in the Hague would be “used to prevent war crimes, rather than prosecute heinous deeds after the fact.”

She noted that Rwanda became the first case since the post World War II trials in which perpetrators of the worst crimes were held accountable, ending what she called 50 years of impunity.

“Genocide is the ultimate form of discrimination and racial hatred,” Pillay said, calling for states to attend the upcoming conference against racism in Geneva, scheduled for later this month.

The war crimes tribunals for Rwanda were still engaged in work and while they were set to be done by 2010 this date is now seen as unlikely. (dpa)

London, Mar 9 (ANI): The Queen will mark the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth on Monday, themed as ‘serving a new generation’ and will highlight the importance of participation of the young generation for its future.

High Commissioners from 53 member nations are also expected to take part in the celebrations.

According to The Telegraph, the Queen, in her annual Commonwealth Day message, will state the institution’s “global perspective” and its attempts to do its best “to meet people’s most pressing needs.”

The Queen’s address will form a part of the annual Observance of Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey this afternoon attended by the Duke of Edinburgh and a host of dignitaries.

The Sovereign, who is head of the Commonwealth, will state in her pre-recorded message, “We can rightly celebrate the fact that the founding members’ vision of the future has become a reality.”

She will add: “Our beliefs in freedom, democracy and human rights; equality and equity; development and prosperity mean as much today as they did more than half a century ago…But as we reflect upon our long association, we should recognise the challenges that lie ahead.”

Nearly a billion people of the present Commonwealth are under 25 years of age.

Putting emphasis on youth’s role in the institution, the Queen would say, “These are the people that this association must continue to serve in the future. It is they who can help shape the Commonwealth of today, and whose children will inherit the Commonwealth of tomorrow.”

She will go on to say: “The call that brought the Commonwealth together in 1949 remains the same today…As the Commonwealth celebrates its 60th birthday, its governments, communities and we as individuals should welcome that achievement.”

The modern Commonwealth was formed in 1949 when eight countries – Australia, Britain, Ceylon, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Canada – signed the Declaration of London after a six-day conference. (ANI)

Braving chilly weather, a large number of devout Hindus from several places including Allahabad, Varanasi, Ayodhya and Mathura, thronged the Sangam in the wee hours of the morning and took the holy dip, after which they visited temples and offered prayers.

High tech Obama’s web team beats him into office

High tech Obama's web team beats him into office San Francisco – The inauguration of US President Barack Obama was greeted by an instantaneous avalanche of chatter and commentary on the internet.

But the web team of the new leader was not far behind. In fact, by many measures, it beat not only the bloggers but also the president himself.

At precisely 12:01 pm local time, pictures of Obama and his family appeared on the home page of the president’s website Whitehouse. gov alongside four features, under the headline Change Has Come to America

The posting preceded by some six minutes the swearing-in of Obama on the steps of the Capitol. However according to constitutional experts quoted by MSNBC, the changing of the guard officially took place at noon Washington time, with the swearing-in merely a formality.

At the same time, the first blog of the new presidency was posted by Macon Phillips, the Director of New Media for the White House, who pledged to make the new website “a place for the President and his administration to connect with the rest of the nation and the world.”

Phillips said that Obama’s new media efforts would revolve around three principles – communications that would be comprehensive and timely; transparency to provide all Americans with a window into the business of government; and participation which would include the publication of all non-emergency legislation for public comment for at least five days before the President signs it.

Two other blogs were also posted at the same time reviewing Obama’s observance of Martin Luther King Day the previous day and his activities on Tuesday prior to the inauguration.

Other sections were also updated to reflect the agenda of the new administration in 24 areas ranging from civil rights to foreign policy. Biographies of the major figures in the administration were also posted (dpa)

Ban urges immediate ceasefire in Israel-Hamas fighting

Ban urges immediate ceasefire in Israel-Hamas fighting New York – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged Israel and Hamas to declare an immediate ceasefire and for the world community to do more to assist victims of the three-day-old conflict.

Ban reiterated his condemnation of the fighting by the two sides, warning of the “frightening nature” of the crisis because of its affect on civilians in the Gaza Strip, half of whom are children.

He called for the observance of humanitarian law in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Israel and Hamas must halt their acts of violence and take all necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties,” Ban told a news conference. “A ceasefire must be declared immediately. They must also curb their inflammatory rhetorics.”

He said dialogue can begin only following a ceasefire.

“The regional and international partners have not done enough,” he said. “They should do more and use all possible means to end the violence and encourage a political dialogue and emphasize peaceful ways to resolve the differences.”

Ban said he had been in touch with government leaders around the world this past weekend and continued to hold discussions to resolve the conflict, which has killed more than 340 people and injured hundreds.

He said the Israeli government has given him guarantees to reopen crossings into Gaza so that humanitarian and medical supplies can reach the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza. Ban said he was still in discussions with the Israeli government to carry out those guarantees.

UN humanitarian coordinator chief in New York, John Holmes, said the UN Palestinian refugee office in the Middle East would need 100 trucks of relief supplies a day, but apparently only about 60 trucks reached their destinations (dpa)
