NSA to convene China Study Group meeting to discuss incursion fallout

New Delhi, Sep.17 (ANI): National Security Advisor M K Narayanan will hold a meeting of the China Study Group – consisting of top officials including Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar and Secretaries of Defence, Home and Foreign Ministries – here today.

The meeting is expected to take stock of the situation along the Sino-India border, official sources said.

Besides Chandrasekhar, the meeting will be attended by Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, Home Secretary G K Pillai and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.

Top officials of the three armed forces and the Intelligence Bureau will also attend the meeting.

The meeting assumes significance in wake of recent reports of incursions by the Chinese army in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, involving the air dropping of expired food canes, painting of rocks red among others.

Another media report said that two Chinese Sukhoi fighters had transgressed into Indian air space last month.

The Indian Air Force, however, says no unscheduled flight inside Indian air space had taken place last month. (ANI)

Obama’s security being compromised due to archaic USSS communication system

Washington, May 23 (ANI): President Barack Obama’s life could be in danger if 34 million dollars are not granted to upgrade the communication system of the US Secret Service, a report claims.

The agency says that its communication system is incompatible with the White House communication system, resulting in a “dangerous gap” that could “prevent the attainment of the performance target of 100 percent protection.”

The statements appeared in a 2010 budget request, submitted to Congress, Wired News reports.

“USSS’ protective and investigative missions will be functionally unable to respond to the increasing volume of threats without additional investment,” the agency said.

According to the request, the agency’s “degraded” networks and software are “adversely impacting critical operational missions” and could thwart agents communicating in an emergency.

The USSS also warned that without the multi-million-dollar upgrade, its system was vulnerable to hacker attacks.

A spokesman for the agency said the agency isn’t currently at risk.

“Despite the challenges we are currently facing with an aging IT infrastructure, this will not interfere with our ability to carry out our protective and investigative missions at this time,” the spokesman said.

However, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan told Congress in March that “the agency’s IT and other mission critical infrastructure cannot sustain the tempo of current operations.”

Sullivan added that the agency flunked an NSA security audit last year that was intended to detect intrusions and vulnerabilities.

“While the NSA findings are classified, I can tell you that the results were chilling,” Sullivan wrote in the testimony. (ANI)

NSA Narayanan to leave for Sri Lanka today

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): National Security Adviser M. K. Narayanan will leave for Sri Lanka today to review the situation in that island nation.

The visit is being held a day after President Mahinda Rajapaksa formally announced that the war against the Tamil Tigers was finally over and that the rebel group has been eliminated.

Ahead of his visit, Narayanan met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and briefed him about the developments in Sri Lanka.

Narayanan said that India’s primary concern is to ensure that Sri Lankan Tamil civilians are taken care of.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee urged the Sri Lankan Government to reach out to Tamils and build a political accommodation that protects the rights of all citizens.

Mukherjee further said the Sri Lankan Government should settle the issue of ethnic minorities, including Tamils.

Sri Lankan troops finished off the last of the LTTE resistance on Monday, wrapping up a three-year offensive to destroy the separatists and win a 25-year-civil war.

The Sri Lankan Government has to provide basic assistance and services to an estimated 265,000 people, who fled the fighting in the northern part of the country.

This latest massive influx of people, who have endured extreme conditions, will put an even greater strain on the camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) that are already buckling under the pressure of the existing IDP population.

Mukherjee said India had already offered a package of Rs. one billion as relief to Sri Lanka and was considering another package of five billion rupees. (ANI)

Security of Pak nukes still cause of concern: US NSA

Hong Kong, May 6 (ANI): The security of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is still cause of concern for Washington despite reassurances that the weapons are out of reach of Taliban militants, US National Security Adviser Gen. (retired) James Jones said.

General James Jones said in an interview with the BBC that Pakistan’s army had told him that the country’s nuclear stockpile was safe, but that Washington needed further guarantees.

“We have received many assurances from the military that this is something they have under control but this is very much an ongoing topic,” the Dawn quoted him, as saying.

“The world would like to know that on this question, that there’s absolute security and transparency,” he added.

Speaking in Washington, where Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is due to meet US President Barack Obama this week, Jones said ‘things are moving in a more positive direction’ in Pakistan, but said more guarantees were needed.

“If Pakistan doesn’t continue in the direction that it presently is and we’re not successful there then, obviously, the nuclear question comes into view,” he said. (ANI)

Varun Gandhi continues to be defiant

Bulandshahr/ Aligarh, Apr 30 (ANI): The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has said that none, howsoever high and mighty, would be spared if he spreads religious hatred.

“Whosoever spreads communal violence, be it the Gandhi family, will be shown the right doors under the administration of Mayawati. A day wasn’t delayed in sending Varun Gandhi to jail,” said Satish Mishra, a BSP leader in an election rally in Bulandshahar.

Mayawati’s Government in Uttar Pradesh had detained Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) young face Varun Gandhi for his alleged hate speech during a public rally in March. A stringent National Security Act (NSA) was invoked the next day.

However Varun Gandhi, addressing a rally in Aligarh, remained defiant.

“I do not regret going to jail as I wasn’t detained for possession of illegal assets or any crime under the Section 302. I went to jail portraying nationalism and also in future, I will be ready to go to jail, ” said Varun Gandhi, who is the BJP’s candidate from Pilibhit constituency where he delivered the alleged hate speech.

Varun, who is presently on parole, was released from the Etah district jail in Uttar Pradesh on April 16 after he gave a fresh undertaking as per the directive of the Supreme Court that he will not make any inflammatory speeches.

Varun Gandhi deposes before NSA board in Lucknow

Lucknow, April 28 (ANI): BJP’s firebrand leader Varun Gandhi on Tuesday deposed before the National Security Act board here following recent directions of the Supreme Court justifying imposition of the NSA against him in connection with his hate-speech.

Sources said that the deposition before the NSA board took place in camera.

Earlier, BJP supporters gave a rousing welcome to Varun on his arrival in the city by helicopter. He was escorted to the party headquarters where he reportedly addressed the gathering.

Las month, the Uttar Pradesh police booked Varun Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate from Pilibhit, under the stringent National Security Act, charging him under the NSA for allegedly inciting communal tension and provoking a riot by his supporters. He was booked under Section 2 and Section 3 of the NSA.

Pilibhit’s District Magistrate Ajay Chauhan had issued the order to invoke NSA on Varun, who was already lodged in the district jail.

The NSA was invoked on the grounds of public administration and peace being disturbed by Gandhi, said Additional Cabinet Secretary Vijay Shanker Pandey to media in Lucknow at that time.

Pandey said the basis for slapping NSA were “Charges of inciting communal passion by making provocative and inflammatory speeches during meetings held on March 7 at Dalganj and on March 8 at Barkhera area of Pilibhit district have been confirmed.”

The NSA action had come on a day when Gandhi was slapped with fresh charges by the Pilibhit police including attempt to murder, a non-bailable offence, in connection with the Saturday’s violence (in March) involving his supporters around the Pilibhit district jail, following his arrest.

The maximum period of detention under the NSA is one year with no provision for bail. The government invokes the NSA on the basis of the district magistrate’s report, after which the accused is kept in preventive detention.

During the three-week period, the accused is provided with the grounds for invoking the NSA and he can challenge the detention before a three-member advisory board headed by a high court judge.

If the board holds that the grounds for detention are justified, then the applicant can only challenge it in Supreme Court.

Pandey stated that on March 18, deviating from the programme he (Varun) had sent to the superintendent of police, he changed his route and timing in a planned manner, thus affecting general administration adversely.

The additional cabinet secretary said that the government had issued an order to ensure strict enforcement of the model code of conduct. (ANI)

Barack Obama has yet to get his spy-proof BlackBerry

Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): Contrary to previous rumors, President Barack Obama hasn’t gotten his super-secure BlackBerry.

According to The Washington Times, the American leader will have to long for his souped-up smartphone for a little while, and has instead been forced to use an ungainly hybrid.

As for the reason why it is so: the National Security Agency still needs a few months to test out its replacement: a souped-up BlackBerry 8830 equipped with software called SecurVoice made by Washington, D.C.-based The Genesis Key, Inc, reports FOX News.

“We’re going to put his BlackBerry back in his hand,” Genesis Key chairman Steven Garrett told the Washington Times.

Engineers from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, based in Waterloo, Ontario, have helped with the upgrade.

The president was forced to give up his unsecured BlackBerry after Inauguration Day, amid concerns that its communications and e-mail would be intercepted by foreign governments or hackers.

In the interim, Obama has been using a patchwork of two devices, a BlackBerry and an NSA-supplied secure handheld device known as Sectera Edge. (ANI)

The Congress is no one to call the BJP communal, says Advani

New Delhi, Apr.18 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani has criticised the Congress for calling his party communal.

“On issues like secularism and communalism the Congress party takes an indefensible stand. Congress never let Lok Sabha function on December 6th when I was Home Minister. Aren’t we tempted to react like wise on October 31st? These issues don’t interest Muslims, only political adversaries,” the senior BJP leader told the TIMES NOW television channel in an interview while en route for campaigning in Bihar.

Referring to the Varun Gandhi issue, he said, “Varun denied the incident, so how can I accuse him? Varun still maintains tapes were doctored. BJP disapprovers and disassociates itself with the alleged statement. National Security Act (NSA) against Varun forced us to react and stand by him.”

Advani said, “Election Commission and Uttar Pradesh government made Varun an issue. For the BJP, Varun episode was a non-issue. Varun should fight the election well and win the election.” Asked about Jayalalitha’s Fourth Front, Advani said, “Jayalalitha is a different category. Jayalalitha has still kept all options open. Jayalalitha’s Ram Mandir manifesto is still self-explanatory.” (ANI)
