WSJ: Nokia searching for new CEO

Struggling to keep up with newer and more inventive rivals, number one phone maker Nokia is looking for a new CEO, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Monday.

While still the biggest phone maker in the world, Nokia has been losing market share in the growing smartphone segment. A March report from Canalys gave the company a 39 percent market share in the smartphone sector, down from 41 percent a year earlier in the face of competition from companies like Apple and Google. As a result, some analysts have been suggesting that a leadership shakeup might help reverse market share declines and stagnating revenue at the Finnish giant.

In June, Nokia warned that its second quarter earnings report, due out Thursday, would be lower than expected. It blamed competition at the high end of the market, a shift in product mix toward lower margin products and the depreciation of the euro.

Olli-Pekka Kallusvuo, president and CEO, has been with Nokia since 1980, when he joined as corporate counsel, according to his biography on the company web site. In 2006 he took over as CEO, replacing Jorma Ollila[cq]. He had a tough act to follow. Ollila was so beloved, that some people called for him to run for president of Finland.

Nokia declined to comment on the report. The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed people who said the company had launched a search for a new CEO.

Taiwan’s HTC says Apple suit not affecting operations

(Reuters) – Taiwan’s HTC Corp, the world’s No.5 smartphone maker, said on Friday a lawsuit against it by Apple Computer was not affecting operations.

“It’s part of business,” Chief Executive Peter Chou told reporters at a news conference where HTC launched new smartphones. “We need to face it and everyone can talk it through.”

Last month, Apple sued HTC, accusing it of infringing 20 hardware and software patents related to the iPhone. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has started to investigate whether HTC has infringed Apple’s patents, the ITC said in a statement on its website.

Nokia says wins China deals worth over $2 billion

(Reuters) – The world’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) said on Thursday it had won handset deals with distributors in China worth over $2 billion.

Technology

A spokesman said one agreement was with China PTAC, worth over $1 billion, and the other was with Telling Telecommunication Holding Co. Ltd., also worth over $1 billion.

Nokia usually announces such deals in China once a year. The value of the agreement with PTAC fell for the third straight year, and was down sharply versus the 2009 figure of $1.76 billion.

China was Nokia’s third largest sales area in 2009 with revenues of 6.4 billion euros ($8.6 billion), flat year-on-year.

Nokia shares traded up 1.8 percent at 11.74 euros at 1333 GMT, keeping pace with a firmer Dow Jones Stoxx Technology index .SX8P.

Lindsay”s skinny frame raises health concerns

Washington, April 1 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan”s shockingly gaunt appearance has raised questions about the star”s well being.

Sources believe that the actress is on the verge of a complete breakdown.

Lohan”s frame looked normal at the recent Nokia X6 launch party but just days later at Paris Fashion Week, she showed up looking shockingly thin.

“This is dangerous both physically and psychologically. This behavior mimics the behavior of those people who are experiencing the negative effect of drug and/or alcohol abuse. They lose sight of any accurate form of self-observation. It only takes one bad decision to end up in a disastrous situation,” Fox News quoted LA-based psychologist Dr. James E. Walton as saying. Brit girl finds porn on her repaired mobile

London, Mar 24 (ANI): A British student is said to have been left horrified after the mobile she sent for repair came back full of porn.

Lauren Kennedy, 18, found her Nokia packed with sleazy homemade videos of couples and groups having sex and women pleasuring themselves.

The phone contained 13 pictures of young women in lingerie and 10 videos between five and 10 minutes long featuring a variety of X-rated scenes.

Kennedy, from Coventry, says she was “deeply traumatised” by the images she discovered on the handset after she sent it for repair to Carphone Warehouse because it kept cutting out mid-call.

“I was disgusted. I wouldn’t have rubbish like that on my mobile. I’m a young girl, I don’t want naked pictures on my phone,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“I think it’s revolting that somebody has had their filthy paws on my mobile phone. They have recorded themselves doing everything.

“You can only see the women and not the person recording it, but you can hear him egging them on,” she added.

The company has offered Lauren a new Blackberry Curve as compensation.

A spokesman apologised and said the firm has launched an “urgent investigation”. (ANI)

The company has around 17,000 employees in the research and development division, of which more than 2,000 are in Oulu and over 1,000 are based in Copenhagen.

The company said it aims to support the employees with alternative solutions, such as finding new positions within the company for as many employees as possible.

London, June 26 (ANI): Lord West, a Security Advisor to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has warned that people owning high-tech mobile phones may be at risk of having their personal information hacked.

He said that he himself used a “Stone Age” Nokia handset to avoid any security risks.

While experts often warn that using text messages to access bank accounts may make confidential data open to interception, Lord West points out that the new generation of internet-enabled smartphones were particularly vulnerable to hacking.

“When you get one of those marvellous new ones that you touch and everything else, you have opened yourself up to all the internet issues,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“Suddenly people can get access to all sorts of data,” he added. (ANI)
