Biden says no hard feelings toward McChrystal

July 18 (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Sunday it was too soon to judge if a surge of U.S. troops into Afghanistan was winning the war and insisted he bore no ill will toward General Stanley McChrystal.

President Barack Obama fired McChrystal last month after a magazine interview in which members of a team led by the top U.S. general in Afghanistan belittled Biden and called Obama’s national security adviser a “clown.”

“I wasn’t the clown. I was the guy who, in fact, was their problem, they thought. I’m not their problem,” Biden told ABC News’ “This Week” program.

McChrystal’s interview with Rolling Stone magazine exposed divisions between the White House and the military on how to conduct the Afghan war.

A member of his team joked about the vice president. “Biden?” the aide was quoted as saying. “Did you say: ‘Bite me?’” Another aide called national security adviser Jim Jones a clown who was “stuck in 1985.”

“I didn’t take it personally at all. I really, honest to God, didn’t. Compared to what happens in politics, this is — that was a piece of cake,” Biden said.

But Biden said the situation left McChrystal in an untenable position and that six four-star generals had advised the vice president that he must go.

“I met with McChrystal. The president met with McChrystal. He was — he was really apologetic. He knew they had gone way beyond. But we also knew that if a sergeant did that, if a lieutenant did that — I mean no one could stay,” Biden said.

Obama replaced McChrystal by putting General David Petraeus in charge of the war in Afghanistan.

U.S. troops are encountering stiff resistance and mounting casualties from a resurgent Taliban, despite a six-month buildup in U.S. forces. But Biden said it was too early to say if the strategy was working or not.

“We knew it was going to be a tough slog. But I think it’s much too premature to make a judgment until the military said we should look at it, which is in December,” Biden said, adding that it would take until August to complete the troop surge.

Elian Gonzalez says he’s happy at home in Cuba

(Reuters) – Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban castaway boy who became the object of an international custody battle a decade ago in Miami, said on Wednesday he was happy he ended up back in Cuba.

But, in his first public comments in several years, he also said he has no hard feelings toward the Miami relatives who fought to keep him there, on grounds that he would have a better life in the United States.

“This is the place I belong. Here I feel good,” Gonzalez told reporters after a Havana church service commemorating the 10th anniversary of his return.

“Thanks to the help of a big part of the American people and of our people, today I’m with my father, and that is everything,” said the clean-cut 16-year-old who is studying to become a Cuban military officer.

Elian was a photogenic five-year-old when he was found floating on an inner tube off the Florida coast in November 1999.

His mother and other Cubans accompanying the boy had died trying to get to the United States from the communist island 90 miles to the south.

His case quickly became another battleground in the long-running feud between Havana and Miami, as his great-uncle’s family tried to keep him in the United States.

Fidel Castro launched an international campaign for his return to his father and grandparents, which carried the day when U.S. immigration agents seized the boy at gunpoint from the Miami home of his relatives, who had refused to give him up.

“Even though they didn’t support us in everything … I have no bitterness toward them,” Elian said of his family in the United States.

He was returned to Cuba and a big welcome on June 28, 2000. Two days later, Fidel Castro attended a celebratory service at the same Episcopal church where Wednesday’s event was held.

Castro, now 83 and ailing, did not attend this time, but his brother and replacement, President Raul Castro, sat front and center with young Elian, who was dressed in white jeans and a striped short-sleeve shirt.

They chatted throughout the service and President Castro hugged him and his family before leaving, without speaking to reporters.

To the chagrin of the anti-Castro Cuban exiles in Florida, Gonzalez has joined Cuba’s ruling Communist Party and supports the revolution that put Fidel Castro in power in 1959.

He is mostly shielded from the press, but stories about him occasionally appear in Cuban media.

His father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, speaking to reporters while he and his son posed for pictures with church-goers, said it was definitely the right decision to bring Elian back to Cuba.

“I am even more certain today than I was at that moment,” he said. “To see him today, doing well, with good grades in school, it shows that what we did, we did not do for no reason.”

Unlike his son, the elder Gonzalez said he still bears a grudge against the family in Miami for not helping him get Elian back, and he had a simple message for them.

“Here, we are united, with my people, who behaved better than they did,” he said.

Obama refused to play golf with talk-radio nemesis Limbaugh

New York, May 12 (ANI): A new book has revealed that President Barack Obama once refused to play a round of golf with his talk-radio nemesis Rush Limbaugh.

The book by Zev Chafets, titled “Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One” due May 25 from Sentinel, revealed a top Democrat relayed the President”s reply to the invitation.

Chafets reports he encouraged Limbaugh to reach out to the president just after last July”s “Beer Summit” that Obama hosted between Professor Henry Louis Gates and Sgt. Joseph Crowley, the Cambridge cop who arrested Gates after he locked himself out of his own home.

“You guys are both golfers,” the New York Post quoted Chafets as telling Limbaugh.

“Would you play a round with the president and show the country that there are no hard feelings?” he asked.

Limbaugh in turn told Chafets: “He”s the president of the United States. If any president asked me to meet him, or play golf with him, I”d do it.”

“But I promise you that will never happen. His base on the left would have a s–t-fit,” he stated.

“How about letting me ask?” Chafets said.

Limbaugh replied: “Go ahead. Nothing will come of it.”

Chafets wrote that he reached out to Obama adviser David Axelrod, “whom I know slightly”, but his calls were never returned.

Then Chafets spoke to “a very senior Democratic activist with whom I”m friendly” who said he would convey the message.

A day or two later the adviser responded, “Limbaugh can play with himself.”

Chafets wouldn”t name the aide or say whether the quote was directly from Obama. (ANI)

Foley survives challenge to deputy’s spot

South Australian Treasurer Kevin Foley has survived a challenge to his deputy leadership of the Labor Party.

Mr Foley had been challenged by the left faction’s candidate, Environment Minister Jay Weatherill, who said the election day backlash against Labor made it evident that a fresh approach was needed.

A secret ballot of the South Australian Labor Caucus at Parliament House determined who would be Premier Mike Rann’s deputy.

Mr Foley is part of Labor’s right faction and had been publicly backed by Mr Rann.

The final vote, which appeared cast along factional lines, was 20 to 13 with one informal vote cast.

Mr Rann emerged from the meeting to declare Labor a united team.

Mr Foley and Mr Weatherill later held a joint news conference, at which Mr Foley said there were no hard feelings.

“Jay and I are going to work constructively together,” he said.

And Mr Weatherill says he will not challenge again.

“There won’t be a next time around,” he said.

Independent MP Kris Hanna, an ex-Labor MP, said earlier that Mr Weatherill’s bid for deputy was a clear message of his intentions for the future.

Despite no formal SA result from last weekend’s poll, a new cabinet was on the agenda of the Caucus meeting.

Former education minister Jane Lomax-Smith lost her seat, as did Karlene Maywald of the Nationals, who presided over water policy.

Michael Atkinson also decided to go to the backbench after polling day.

Caucus decided to add John Rau, Grace Portolesi and Jack Snelling to the ministerial ranks of the next government.

Ms Portolesi’s seat of Hartley remains in slight doubt, as she holds a lead over Liberal Joe Scalzi.

In another Adelaide seat, Bright, Labor member Chloe Fox trails Liberal Maria Kourtesis.

“There has been a substantial swing and many postal and pre-poll [voters] had already made up their mind about the direction they wanted to vote,” Ms Kourtesis said.

“I believe there was a mood for change in that period and I’m hoping the climate and the traditional history of postal votes coming our way will be the case.”

The SA Electoral Commissioner says an outcome for the Upper House will not be confirmed until next week.

Sienna Miller thinks Cate Blanchett will make a ‘better’ Maid Marian

New Delhi, July 2 (ANI): Sienna Miller believes that Cate Blanchett, who has replaced her in Ridley Scott’s epic Robin Hood, will make a “better” Maid Marian than her.

The actress, who was due to star alongside Russell Crowe in the upcoming big-budget drama, said that there were no hard feelings against 40-year-old Cate, who she said was “more suitable” for the role, reports the China Daily.

She told Total Film magazine: “There was nothing salacious. The script kept changing and evolving, to the point where I was no longer appropriate for it. Cate’s 10 years older than me, which is more suitable for the script.”

She added: “If they’d recast it with Keira Knightley, I’d have been heartbroken, but they’ve gone for something different – and better, in my opinion. If I had the choice between Cate Blanchett and me, I’d go for Cate Blanchett!” (ANI)

Sienna Miller blames ‘vendetta’ for losing Robin Hood role

London, July 1 (ANI): Sienna Miller has said that there is a “vendetta” against her after the actress lost out on playing Maid Marian in Ridley Scott’s epic Robin Hood.

The Hippie Hippie Shake star, who was due to share the frame with Russell Crowe in the forthcoming drama, said that script alterations cost her the role.

“The script kept changing and evolving to the point where I was no longer appropriate for it,” the Daily Express quoted her as having told Total Film magazine.

The 27-year-old, however, added that she had no hard feelings against 40-year-old Cate Blanchett, who had stepped into her shoes.

She said: “Cate’s 10 years older than me, which is more suitable for the script. If they’d recast with Keira Knightley I’d have been heartbroken but they’ve gone for something different – and better in my opinion. If I had the choice between Cate Blanchett and me I’d go for Cate Blanchett.”

Miller further said that she was not the only one who was dropped out of the project, and that it was the media’s doing that such a hue and cry was created about her loss of role.

She added: “There were several people supposed to be doing the film who no longer are but because it’s me it becomes this enormous drama – I think it’s a Sienna thing! There’s just a vendetta against… I don’t know.” (ANI)

Man U legend Charlton terms Ronaldo’s 80-mn pound price tag as vulgar

London, June 19 (ANI): Football great Bobby Charlton has branded the 80 million pound price tag for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo as “vulgar”.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have agreed to pay the huge fee for Ronaldo in a deal that should be signed next week.

United legend and football director Charlton admitted it was a ridiculous amount of money. “It’s a lot of money, it’s crazy really. If you want to be in the race, you have to pay the price. It seems sometimes a little bit vulgar.”

“But, nevertheless, that is business, I’m afraid. We have responsibilities to our company and fans – and it was decided that Ronaldo could go. It’s an enormous fee. We will be better for it,” The Sun quoted him, as saying. harlton insists there will be no hard feelings when Ronaldo cuts his ties with United and agrees his move to Real.

That could happen as early as this weekend as the Portuguese winger is due back from his American holiday. And Charlton admits only time will tell whether boss Alex Ferguson was right to let him go.

“Ronaldo always dreamed about playing for Real Madrid, so if he leaves us, it’s with our blessing.

But you never know if you’ve made the right decision until the start of the season,” Charlton said. (ANI)

No hard feelings over New York airport delay: Mammootty

Kochi, May 24 (IANS) Malayalam superstar Mammootty says he has no ill-feelings towards immigration officials at the JFK Airport in New York for delaying his clearance as they were just doing their job.

“It became news here because it was me and do you know there were 30 others whose clearance was delayed because the officials were checking their papers too. I had no issues at all and they treated me properly and I have nothing against them,” said Mammootty, who returned to Kerala Saturday after a nearly month-long visit to the US.

The veteran actor’s exit from the airport last month was delayed because his name in his passport appears as Mohammad Kutty Ismail.

“I said who I am and when I told them that my website reveals everything, they were convinced after they checked it,” Mammootty told IANS.

He said he was in the US as part of a fund-raising campaign for his close friend, attorney Stanley Kalathara, who is contesting the election for the New York City Council from District 25, which includes Jackson Heights and Corona.

Mammootty added that his trip went off well.

“The final election there takes place in September and ahead of that there are other programmes and I chipped in my bit for my friend,” he explained.

The superstar, who was away for a month, got busy with work as soon as he arrived here and is now dubbing for his latest film “Daddy Cool”.

“My next film ‘Patanthil Bhootham’ is being released next month and will be followed by ‘Loud Speaker’ directed by Jayaraj,” said Mammootty.

Mammootty and Jayaraj are teaming up for “Loud Speaker” after the blockbuster “Johnny Walker” released 17 years back.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s gay jape leaves US politician fuming

London, April 18 (ANI): Sacha Baron Cohen has left a US politician fuming after trying to trick him into his “bedroom” for a seduction scene on camera.

Texan congressman Ron Paul revealed he had was scheduled for an interview about European finances.

But when the senior Republican arrived, he was taken into a dark room where the actor tried to lure him in a skimpy leather outfit.

The former presidential candidate branded the 37-year-old a “fraud” following the incident.

“I was expecting an interview on Austrian economics. By the time he started pulling his pants down, I was like: ‘What on earth is going on here?’ and I ran out of the room,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

Cohen’s also mocked Madonna’s bid to adopt an African baby in his new movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America For The Purpose Of Making Heterosexual Male.

He was later reported to have apologised to the Queen of Pop with a bouquet of flowers to say ‘No hard feelings’. (ANI)

Sacha Baron Cohen apologises to Madge over African adoption dig

London, April 18 (ANI): Sacha Baron Cohen has apologised to Madonna after mocking her bid to adopt an African baby in his new movie Bruno, according to sources.

The “Borat” star was said to have sent a bouquet of flowers to the Queen of Pop, who was reportedly upset following the gag.

“Sacha is always out to make great comedy – and if he upsets people along the way, so be it,” The Mirror quoted an insider as saying.

“But when word reached him that Madonna thought his sketch was insensitive, he sent her a bouquet of flowers to say, ‘No hard feelings’,” the insider added.

It was further alleged that Cohen’s apology to the singer was not unexpected since the two have been good friends.

The source added: “It’s hardly surprising Sacha is going out of his way to mend their rift.

“The pair go back years. Madge was such a big fan of his Ali G character she asked him to star in her video for Hey Mr DJ and they’ve been pals ever since.” (ANI)

China’s Huiyuan says still hopes to find partner

BEIJING, April 16 (Reuters) – China’s top juice maker Huiyuan (1886.HK) still has high hopes of finding a strong partner after Beijing rejected Coca-Cola’s acquisition attempt, its chairman was reported as saying on Thursday.

Chairman Zhu Xinli said that Coca-Cola’s (KO.N) bid had greatly boosted Huiyuan’s reputation and that it was now being courted by even more companies.

We still hope “to marry into a wealthy family,” Zhu was quoted as saying by the China Securities Journal. The newspaper did not mention the names of any potential partners.

Zhu also said that he had no hard feelings towards Chinese regulators for blocking the deal, likening them to parents who know what is best for their child in finding a spouse.

China rejected Coca-Cola’s $2.5 billion bid for Huiyuan under an anti-monopoly law enacted last year, stating that the combined concentration of the two companies would have hurt competition in the juice business.

Huiyuan’s profits attributable to shareholders fell 86.1 percent last year to 88.9 million yuan ($13.01 million) from 640 million yuan in 2007, the China Securities Journal said. ($1=6.832 Yuan) (Reporting by Simon Rabinovitch; Editing by Ken Wills)

KP could captain England ODI side

Guyana (West Indies), Mar.18 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen is in line for a dramatic recall as England captain, just 10 weeks after being axed.

According to The Sun, he could lead the side in Friday’s one-dayer against West Indies here if Andrew Strauss does not recover from a hamstring strain.aul Collingwood, who quit as England one-day captain last year, would be the other candidate.

The selectors might want to give the job back to Pietersen on a one-off basis to try to show there are no hard feelings.

Whoever leads England on Friday will have the chance to end the grim sequence of 14 major matches without a victory.

Essex batsman Alastair Cook was Strauss’ deputy for the Test series but is not around for the one-day games.

Strauss’ right hamstring was strapped yesterday and he did not take a full part in a fitness session. (ANI)

Joaquin Phoenix fuelled self-mockery for documentary on public persona

Washington, Feb 25 (ANI): The mockery of Joaquin Phoenix’s antics at recent award functions, including the Oscars, has been fuelled by the actor himself to collect material for a documentary on public persona, say sources.

Last year, the ‘Walk the Line’ star announced that he was retiring from acting to pursue a life-long dream of being a rapper.

But the 34-year-old star has raised grave health concerns for himself after his recent temper tantrums, bizarre behaviour and unruly appearance.

In a recent appearance on The David Letterman Show, Phoenix spoke in monosyllabic slurs and stuck gum underneath the desk-a gig that was later copied by Ben Stiller (donning an over-sized scruffy wig and fake beard) at the 2009 Academy Awards on Feb 22.

While presenting the show with Natalie Portman, Stiller chomped loudly on his gum and later stuck it on the podium.

Phoenix was also mocked at the Independent Spirit Awards, when Steve Coonan dressed up as Batman delivered a Christian Bale rant” alongside an actor resembling a highly dishevelled, dribbling Phoenix.

However, a source has revealed that all the laughing directed at the actor-turned-rapper was part of a strategic plan.

“Joaquin wanted this, of course he knew (about the parodies) because it’s all part of a very strategic plan,” Fox News quoted a source as saying.

The source added: “He is selling it all as a documentary not about his musical career but the whole issue of public persona. It’s all a big joke and he’s not pursuing rapping seriously no matter what he says. Ben (Stiller) was just going along with the joke that Joaquin started. He wasn’t poking fun at him, there are no hard feelings.”

A representative for Phoenix refused to comment on the issue. (ANI)

Hefner’s ex-girlfriend Wilkinson to wed at Playboy Mansion

Washington, Feb 7 (ANI): Hugh Hefner’s ex-girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson will be tying the knot at the Playboy Mansion.

The blonde beauty, who is engaged to American football star Hank Baskett, is planning for a wedding ceremony set in her former home.

And Wilkinson has asked her ‘Girls Next Door’ co-stars, Bridget Marquardt and Holly Madison, to be her bridesmaids.
But, although she’d like Hef to give her away on the big day, she thinks it could be awkward for her husband-to-be.

“It’s more than likely we will get married at the mansion, but I think it’s awkward for Hank to have Hef give me away. It just doesn’t make sense, because it shouldn’t be someone who’s an ex-boyfriend,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Thus, the 23-year-old Playboy star has asked her brother, Colin, to walk her down the aisle.

However, she has maintained that there are no hard feelings between her and Hefner and she has been able to reassure her fiance that all is good between the former lovers.

She said: “Hank’s so comfortable with things now. We showed Hef our engagement video and Hef was so happy, he cried.” (ANI)

McCullum unfazed by what Symonds said

Melbourne, jan.26 (ANI): New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum is insisting that he has no hard feelings towards Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds after the latter labelled him a “lump of shit” during a recent radio program.
Symonds has publicly criticized the decision by New South Wales last week to sign McCullum on the eve of Saturday night’s domestic Twenty20 final against Victoria.

Firstly he labelled the move “un-Australian” as it denied a NSW player a place in the decider, before upping his criticism on radio on Friday night with the rather distasteful comment that is being investigated by Cricket Australia.
Fox Sports, however, quoted McCullum as saying: “Mate, people are entitled to their opinion and I certainly wasn’t offended by it at all. There’s nothing you can do about it. I was over here to enjoy the occasion and certainly did that and it was just a great game to be a part of. I’m not worried what people have to say and certainly not offended by it at all.”

McCullum didn’t have much impact on the game, hitting 10 from 11 balls opening the innings, but he hopes he can continue to

While Symonds’ future in national colours is uncertain, the two players could line up against each other in the upcoming one-day series between Australia and New Zealand.

McCullum said he hasn’t felt the need to contact Symonds over the matter.

“No not at all. I didn’t even know it happened until I turned up (on Saturday), so I try not to concern myself with that sort of thing. I had a job to try and do and that’s what my focus was on. What people say is what people say and they’re entitled to their opinion.” (ANI)

Asian soldier says Prince Harry’s ‘not racist’

London, Jan 17 (ANI): The Asian soldier at the centre of the Prince Harry ‘Paki’ row came out in defence of the British Royal, insisting that “he’s not racist”.

The third in line to the throne, who is honing his flying skills to become a pilot of the meanest attack machine in the British Army, was said to have invited trouble as he called an Asian officer “our little Paki friend”.

The royal, in a light-hearted manner, apparently told another cadet, who was wearing a camouflage veil off duty, “F*** me, you look like a raghead”- a nasty term to refer to an Arab.

Captain Ahmed Raza Khan, who is serving in Pakistan Army, defended the prince saying ‘he’s my friend’.

“The Prince called me by a nickname which is usually very insulting, but I know he didn’t mean it that way. He phoned me to apologise and I have no hard feelings. We need to close this chapter now,” The Sun quoted Raza Khan as saying.

“When I spoke to Harry he told me he never meant what people may think about the so-called nickname and I believe him.

“We were close friends when we were training and I know he is not a racist. I have no reason to take up the issue again.

“Since he has apologised, I would say, let bygones be bygones,” he added.

Ahmed, son of a retired bank manager, was one of 440 elite cadets from his country chosen to spend 44 weeks training alongside Harry at Sandhurst, the prestigious military academy in Surrey, between May 2005 and April 2006. (ANI)
