Pakistani American arrested in connection with failed Times Square bombing plot

New York, May 4 (ANI): US investigators have arrested a Connecticut man, a naturalized Pakistani American, in connection with Saturday night’s failed Times Square bombing plot.

According to sources, the man, identified as Faisal Shahzad, was believed to have bought the Nissan Pathfinder, the SUV which was found abandoned loaded with crude explosives at the busy Times Square.

Shahzad was apprehended at the Kennedy Airport, when he was apparently trying to flee, The New York Times reports.

Earlier, federal authorities confirmed ‘foreign links’ in the failed bombing plot, and said
they were probing the possibility of a ‘naturalized American citizen’ being involved in the incident.

Senior Obama administration officials said the latest investigations support the suspicion that there was a foreign connection behind the terror plot.

Sources said evidence includes international phone calls made by the person, who has not been identified publicly.

“Don”t be surprised if you find a foreign nexus. They”re looking at some tell-tale signs and they”re saying it”s pointing in that direction,” said a senior White House official.

It may be noted that the Pakistan Taliban has already claimed the responsibility for the bombing plot.

The last owner of the Nissan Pathfinder, had told the investigators that he had recently sold the SUV to a “Middle Eastern” or “Hispanic” looking man for 1,300 dollars.

Earlier, for the first time the White House confirmed that the plot was a ‘terrorist act’.

“I think that we have made really substantial progress. Ultimately this investigation will be successful and the people responsible for that attempt will be found and brought to justice,” Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters. (ANI)

Pak terror links found in failed Times Square bombing plot

New York, May 4 (ANI): US investigators probing Saturday night’s failed bomb attempt at the Times Square are probing the possibility of a ‘naturalized American citizen’ being involved, who was in Pakistan for several months and had returned to America recently.

According to sources, federal authorities have confirmed ‘foreign links’ in the failed bombing plot.

Senior Obama administration officials told Fox News that the latest investigations support the suspicion that there was a foreign connection behind the terror plot.

Sources said evidence includes international phone calls made by the person, who has not been identified publicly.

Shahbaz Sharif must stop supporting ‘asset ’ terror groups before it’s too late: Pak analyst

Islamabad, Mar.20 (ANI): Pakistan Punjab province’s Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s recent statement imploring the Taliban to exempt his region from violence has shocked many, but the bigger question is as to what prompted Shahbaz to make such an irresponsible statement.

Some analysts believe that the recent series of suicide attacks in Lahore has surprised Shahbaz to such an extent that he was unable to make out why extremist groups such as the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which is regarded as a strategic asset by the authorities, has broken its promise to not to create trouble in the region.

In her article in The Dawn, noted strategist and political analyst, Ayesha Siddiqa, pointed out that scores of Pakistani leaders have made deals with banned terror outfits to win seats in Parliament.

Siddiqa said that it is due to this nefarious nexus between militants and politicians that the ever expanding wave of ‘radicalism’ and ‘jihadism’ in Pakistan has not been challenged substantially.

She, however, warned that politicians must realise the dangers involved in joining hands with outlawed organisations only for fulfilling their petty objectives.

“ The problem with strategic assets, as Shahbaz Sharif may realise, is that they often bite the hand that feeds them since they can also feel insecure,” Siddiqa said.

Shahbaz Sharif is keeping silent on the jihadi ‘assets’, and according to reliable sources there was an understanding that he would take care of these elements, especially while the military was busy fighting the Taliban and other militant organisations in the lawless tribal regions, she added.

“ The ‘boys’ who feel they are not getting the right signals are likely to jump the gun and turn into splinters of the splinters. It is up to the Punjab chief minister to face this reality before it’s too late,” Siddiqa said. (ANI)

Police swoop on sellers of Jaswant Singh’s pirated book in Pak

Lahore, Sep.18 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh’s book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah has sent the Pakistani book piracy nexus working overtime, but it has also landed people in police custody.

Pakistani security agencies have arrested three people for selling pirated editions of the book ‘Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence,’ following a countrywide crackdown on publishers and sellers of counterfeit editions of the controversial yet popular book.

Several fake copies of the book have also been recovered and cases have been registered in Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Lahore, The Daily Times reported.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials said the action was taken on a complaint filed by Tariq Haq, regional sales head of the Oxford University Press (OUP).

Tariq said the OUP had the sole rights of publication and distribution of the book and the company is facing heavy losses due to large scale piracy of the book.

Singh’s book which has created a furor in India, has received an overwhelming response in Pakistan.

Not only intellectuals, but people from different strata of the society have also shown interest in the book, in which Singh has praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah and described him as a leader who had strong faith in united India, while blaming Sardar Patel for the partition in 1947. (ANI)

India, US, Israel involved in a ‘nexus’ to destabilize Pakistan: Former ISI DG

Islamabad, Aug.28 (ANI): Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lieutenant General (retired) Hamid Gul has said that India, US and Israel were together hatching a conspiracy against Pakistan to destabilize it.

In an interview with the Foreign Policy Journal, Gul , who was once called ‘the most dangerous man in Pakistan’, said there is a nexus between Washington, Tel Aviv, and New Delhi which is working to create more trouble in Pakistan.

Gul said it was due to this reason that the U.S. signed strategic nuclear deal with India.

Referring to US allegations that he had ties with several extremist groups, he said such claims were laughable.

“Well, it’s laughable I would say, because I’ve worked with the CIA and I know they were never so bad as they are now. This was ‘a pity for the American people’ since the CIA is supposed to act “as the eyes and ears” of the country,” Gul said.

When asked about his alleged links with the Taliban, he said : “It is utterly baseless. I have no contact with the Taliban, nor with Osama bin Laden and his colleagues. I have no means, I have no way that I could support them, that I could help them.” (ANI)

Maoists and civil liberties groups nexus in West Bengal: Chakraborty

Kolkata, June 22 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty has said a nexus exists between Maoist and civil liberties groups in West Bengal.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Chakraborti said, “NGOs like the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) have emerged as the frontline organisations of Maoist groups. Utterances that PCPA leaders have been making, the kind of speeches Maoist leaders have made in last few days will make it very obvious that if not the same they have a very, very close nexus.”

He was speaking in response to demands made by some intellectuals and other groups that the Maoists and the PCPA should not be considered to be in the same league.

“Maoists and PCPA should shun violence and surrender. Police would take action against whoever would commit act of violence. The rebel groups should support the functioning of the government. They should join the mainstream,” he said.

Earlier, hundreds of Maoists, who were expanding their influence across the country, had chased away police and killed government supporters from around Lalgarh, which they declared a “liberated zone”. (ANI)

Key proteins linked to ovulation identified

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Researchers from the National Institutes of Health have identified two proteins that play a vital role in ovulation process.

The discovery, researchers hope, would help in treating infertility resulting from a failure of ovulation. It will also aid in developing new means to prevent pregnancy by preventing the release of the egg.

The proteins, called ERK1 and ERK2, appear to bring about the maturation and release of the egg.

“Ovulation results from a complex interplay of chemical sequences,” said Dr Duane Alexander, director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

“The researchers have identified a crucial biochemical intermediary controlling the release of the egg.

“The finding advances our understanding and may one day contribute to new treatments for infertility as well as new ways to prevent pregnancy from occurring,” Alexander added.

ERK1 and ERK2 are a critical nexus between the surge in luteinizing hormone and ovulation, said Dr Louis V. De Paolo chief of the NICHD Reproductive Sciences Branch.

“This is a key chemical pathway that affects not only ovulation, but egg cell maturation and granulosa cell differentiation into luteal cells,” Dr. De Paolo added.

Luteinizing hormone is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland.

Previously, researchers did not know how luteinizing hormone triggered the ovary’s release of the egg and the production of progesterone by the granulosa cells.

In the current study, the researchers discerned that luteinizing hormone appears to signal the release of the ERK 1 and ERK 2 proteins.

“We’re still at the tip of the iceberg. We need to understand it all,” said De Paolo said. (ANI)

Mamata’s convoy held up, party blames CPM men

BANKURA: The convoy of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was blocked at School More at Bankura’s Mejia on Saturday, allegedly by CPM
supporters, as she was going to Bishnupur after campaigning in Jamuria. Trinamool leader Mukul Roy said that CPM supporters surrounded Mamata’s vehicle and banged on it. Police did not help her, but party supporters managed to extricate her vehicle, Roy alleged. The men were reportedly carrying lathis.

The incident occurred around 4 pm. The Trinamool chief was held up for 5 minutes, after which she continued on her way. Her party supporters have blocked NH-60 since then, demanding arrest of the guilty. An FIR will be lodged soon, said sources.

Mamata came down from her vehicle when the alleged CPM supporters surrounded her convoy. The situation continues to be tense, with police patrolling the area. “CPM is afraid of my campaigning and trying to prevent me from going to these places,” the Trinamool chief later said.

Earlier in the day, at Jamuria, Mamata alleged that CPM had been winning because gangsters, deployed by the coal mafia, rig polls in Jamuria, Raniganj and Pandaveswar and that there is a direct nexus between the coal mafia and CPM in Asansol.

The Trinamool Congress chairperson was campaigning for Moloy Ghatak, the party candidate from the Asansol Lok Sabha seat. She also lambasted CPM candidate Bansa Gopal Choudhury for the mushrooming of hazardous sponge iron and ferro alloy units in Asansol and Raniganj. “All over the world, sponge iron plants are closing down due to pollution. Whereas here, they are thriving. The result? Decrease in drinking water, air pollution, rampant illegal coal mining, lowly paid migrated workers who work like bonded labourers,” Mamata alleged.

She also blamed the Left Front for making Asansol-Durgapur, the largest and the oldest industrial belt in the country, sick.

Lawyer saves teen girl from prostitution racket, 4 held

CHENNAI: A woman lawyer backed by an NGO rescued an 18-year-old girl who was forced into prostitution by a gang in Villupuram. Based on the
lawyer’s complaint, police arrested a pimp and three women who had forced the girl into the flesh trade.

The victim’s mother, a construction employee, had eloped with a worker, abandoning her daughter in Puducherry. According to the lawyer, PA Lucie, she came to know about the girl, Vasanthi (name changed), on March 18 from an NGO volunteer in Puducherry. “We went to the particular place in Puduchery where the girl was confined to a small room in a house and used for prostitution. We rescued the girl and she stayed with me,” Lucie said.

Police arrested the pimp, Stephen Raj, and the three women – Logeswari, Lakshmi and Poongavanam – for initiating the girl into prostitution. Initial inquiries with the girl revealed that she had been shifted from place to place – Villupuram, Salem, Tiruchi and other cities in Tamil Nadu – and forced to entertain men and make money. Police have launched a search for a few others involved in the racket.

According to sources, Vasanthi stayed with her mother Ilavarasi in a house in Puducherry. They had left their native village Karungkuzhi, near Villupuram, after Ilavarasi’s husband Vaidyalingam died. Ilavarasi had begun working as a construction employee. Trouble started in Vasanthi’s life when Ilavarasi eloped with a maistry’, leaving her teenage daughter. The house owner then drove Vasanthi away. Learning about her problems, a neighbour Sathya came forward to help her on the pretext of offering her the job of a domestic maid. Sathya sold Vasanthi for a meagre amount to a prostitution agent in Puducherry who later sold her to other agents.

“The prostitution agents have a nexus with politicians and some tainted officers,” Lucie said.

Varun Gandhi a victim of nexus between BJP, BSP: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, Apr 4 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi was a victim of nexus between the saffron party and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

“I think this is a political game of the BJP and the BSP. They have a nexus; BJP wants to benefit itself from Hindutva. On the other hand, the BSP wants division in the minority vote,” Sibal told reporters here.

When asked about whether invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against Gandhi was correct, Sibal said it was State Government’s subjective satisfaction.

“It is a State Government’s subjective satisfaction. If anybody knows the NSA, he has the order of detention under the NSA. It is based on the subjective satisfaction of the State Government. How can I comment on objective of a subjective satisfaction,” Sibal added.

The Congress leader also questioned BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani about his Government’s role on the issue of money hoarded in Swiss banks, when they were in power.

“This is a national issue. Many parties are involved in it. Advani was the Home Minister and then Deputy-Prime Minister for six years. He was also the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha for five years. Why did not he raise the question for 11 years?” Sibal asked.

General elections are scheduled to be held between April 16 and May 13, in which 714 million people will cast their votes. (ANI)

Allegations of ISI-Qaeda nexus baseless: Pak ISPR

Islamabad, Mar 29 (ANI): Allegations levelled against Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in a section of international media are “baseless and malafide,” said the Inter-Services Public Relations spokesman.

“The commitment of Pakistan in fighting terrorism can be judged from the sacrifices rendered by its security forces, including intelligence organisations,” he said in a statement.

“Such unauthenticated reports are part of a malicious campaign to discredit and bring disrepute to our security organisations,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

“We, therefore, reject the allegations levelled against our security organisations,” he added.

Earlier, US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen had confirmed media reports that the ISI has close links with al-Qaeda and the Taliban network, and is offering logistical support to them.

“There are certainly indications that’s the case,” The Dawn quoted Admiral Mullen, as saying.

Talking to media persons right after President Barack Obama announced a revamped strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said that the nefarious network must be severed to thwart the extremist’s upsurge in the region.

“Fundamentally that’s one of the things that have to change,” Mullen added.

He said Islamabad has also expressed concern over the increasing influence of the outlawed terror groups and was working to curb the menace, but more sincere efforts were needed to tackle the issue. (ANI)

LeT bigger threat to US than Qaeda: US Intelligence

Lahore, Mar.9 (ANI): The United States has expressed its concern over the presence of the outlawed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s (LeT) on its soil.

US intelligence agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are alarmed over evidence of continued LeT’s presence on US soil, including back-up cells in Pakistan, especially after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

According to sources, officials are of the view that LeT’s global nexus may prove more dangerous for the security of US than al-Qaeda.

Former Deputy National Security Adviser for counter-terrorism, Juan Zarate also admitted that LeT has bases across the world, including the United States.

“We are and should be concerned about the threat LeT poses, given its global network. It doesn’t just reside in South Asia. It is an organisation that has potential reach all over the world, including the US,” The Daily Times quoted Zarate, as saying.

Evidence available with the investigation agencies also prove that several young US residents have been trained in Lashkar’s camps, and they have returned to the US. Reports show a Lashkar interest in several big, cities including New York, California, Georgia and other locations.

FBI director, Robert Mueller had also viewed a possibility of a Mumbai-style commando attack in US by militants of less well-known terrorist groups.

“They are merely an e-ticket away from the United States,” Mueller had said.

Chairman of the Obama administration’s Pakistan-Afghanistan strategy review council, Bruce Riedel has also expressed fears that a ‘global jihadist syndicate’ of disaffected young Pakistanis was the most likely mechanism for launching an attack on US soil. (ANI)

Sasha Grey shoots back at criticism of sex scenes

New York, Mar 8 (ANI): American porn star Sasha Grey has showed that she will not take any criticism, on her sex scenes, laying down.

Grey, 20, received feedback from the Daily Nexus, a student newspaper of the University of California at Santa Barbara, which called her rough sex scenes in porn movies “disturbingly forced”.

“Young Sasha’s got some issues,” the New York Post quoted the paper as having added.

But the young porn actress, who also appears in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience,” shot back with an answer of her own.

“Sex on camera is performance . . . I am a very sexually healthy young woman . . . The days of victimized, disturbed porn stars (and civilian women) are fading away – I am the new breed,” she stated. (ANI)

Centre suggests focussed approach to check mafia-terrorist nexus

New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): Keeping in view a possible nexus between the mafia and organized crime with terrorism, the Central Government has suggested that State Governments come up with action plans to counter it.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Dr. Shakeel Ahmad said: “The Central Government also focussed measures taken to identify and rid State capitals and other major cities/towns of mafia gangs, extortion groups, and land sharks.”

“The State Governments have also been advised to set up a dedicated and well equipped cell, under senior level supervision, to comprehensively monitor and deal with organized crimes such as, drug trafficking, money laundering, and circulation of counterfeit currency,” he added

However, police and public order being State subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution, the State Governments are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crime and criminals. (ANI)
