Malaysian-Indian woman’s widower wins racism battle against Hong Kong hospital

London, Apr. 1 (ANI): The husband of a Malaysian-Indian woman, who died in 2000 due to the negligence of a Hong Kong hospital’s staff, has finally won the legal battle of racial discrimination against the hospital administration.

Martin Jacques, a journalist, has been awarded with a “substantial sum” in compensation after winning the decade old battle.

“No one can compensate for Hari”s (Harinder Veriah) death but justice does matter. It is tragic that care for those who are ill can be prejudiced by their colour. But as Hari found in 14 months in Hong Kong, racism is endemic to Hong Kong society,” The Guardian quoted Jacques, as saying.

Veriah died in the Ruttonjee Hospital on January 2, 2000 after an epileptic seizure.

A day before her death, she had complained to Jacques about her poor treatment, saying she was at the “bottom of the pile” because of the colour of her skin.

“I fought to get hospital records and I started to get a picture of what happened and the picture was that her treatment was outrageous. There”s absolutely no reason why someone should die from epilepsy,” Jacques said.

Veriah, a lawyer, was admitted to Ruttonjee Hospital after suffering a grand mal epileptic fit on the first day of the millennium, after a celebratory night out.

When he received a call from a nurse the next morning to say that Veriah had suffered another fit, he was at her bedside within 10 minutes.

There was no sign of a doctor, who had prescribed Valium, he said. Veriah never regained consciousness and died shortly afterwards.

Jacques later found out that t Veriah had suffered a respiratory depression – a decline in oxygen – after being given a sedative and that she was not monitored or treated properly. (ANI)

Erratic driver asleep at wheel, court told

A woman who claims she was driving in her sleep because of the effects of the insomnia medication Stilnox has gone on trial in Adelaide for road offences.

Adelaide Magistrates Court heard sales consultant Tanya May Barber, 26, remembers nothing beyond taking a sleeping tablet and waking up the next morning.

Prosecutors allege she was driving erratically at suburban Parkside one night in 2008 with a flat tyre and without headlights.

Barber is on trial for driving without due care, driving at night without effective lights and failing to comply with an alcohol test.

Her lawyer told the court that Barber was “sleep driving”, a common side-effect of the prescription medication, and was in her sleeping attire.

The police officer who pulled her over said it was obvious she was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, but later conceded she looked sleepy.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr Craig Raeside told the court it was not uncommon for Stilnox users to report such occurrences.

He said he believed Barber was not conscious of what she was doing.

Barber told the court she usually took half a tablet even though she was prescribed one tablet.

She said she became concerned after her boyfriend told her she had done things she could not remember.

Barber said on that night she had badly needed a good sleep and took a full tablet.

The trial continues.

That was when a match was made on the national DNA database with Dorrough, who was arrested in a traffic matter seven years earlier.

Staying calm helps save stranded diver

Sea rescue authorities have credited an Esperance diver’s survival with his ability to remain calm after becoming stranded at sea overnight.

Peter Agnew, 46, was diving off the south-east coast on Friday, but when he surfaced his four-metre dinghy had drifted away.

He swam to Sandy Hook Island where he took refuge for the night, before swimming a further 800 metres the next morning to get help from a passing fishing boat.

Russell Palmer from the Esperance Volunteer Marine Rescue Group has praised Mr Agnew’s actions throughout the ordeal.

“He stayed calm the whole time when things didn’t work out for him, when he surfaced and realised his boat was gone, he didn’t panic, he stayed calm,” he said.

“[He] got himself up onto the rocks and … thought his situation out very well, in the end that’s probably what got him through it.”

Mr Agnew was discharged from hospital yesterday after being treated for dehydration.

US Fritzl told wife “to take the cute blond girl” during “child shopping” trip

London, Sept 13 (ANI): Phillip Garrido, the “American Fritzl”, selected Jaycee Lee Dugard as his prey during a “child shopping” trip because she looked cute, his wife has told police in California.

Describing the precision that went into the abduction of the then 11-year-old Jaycee, Nancy told cops that they decided not to snatch the pretty blond girl with the gap-toothed grin that day in June 1991 because she was walking through South Lake Tahoe along with few school friends.

Instead, they apparently trailed her to her home before returning the next morning to complete their mission.

Garrido allegedly jumped out of their car and grabbed her as she walked to nearby a bus-stop, while her husband remained behind the wheel.

“That’s the one I want,” Garrido told her when he saw Jaycee in the resort town.

“She’s cute, but she’s with the other kids. Let’s come back later and get her,” she added.

After being briefed on Mrs Garrido’s testimony by law enforcement contacts, Michael Cardoza, a Californian attorney and former prosecutor, relayed his coldly calculating words to the Telegraph.

“This was nothing less than a child shopping trip. It just makes their actions all the more horrendous and reprehensible,” he said. (ANI)

Model Rajni Bharti booked for forcing teen maid into prostitution

MUMBAI: The Versova police have booked a small-time model for forcing her 17-year-old maid to solicit clients at various places across Mumbai, Pune and Surat. No arrest has been made yet.

The accused, Rajni Bharti, claimed to have acted in television commercials. A native of Delhi, she lived with her husband and two children in the Yari Road area.

“The victim’s aunt had been working for the Bhartis for a decade. She asked the victim to join her when Bharti was pregnant with her second child in 2007,” an official said.

The abuse started two months after the girl started working for the family. “When her aunt had left for Madh Island and Bharti’s husband too was away, the victim was offered a soft drink laced with sedatives. The girl felt groggy and slept. The next morning, she realised that she had been raped when she found bloodstains on her dress. She recalled having seen a stranger in her room. And when she got to know that Priyanka Chopra too will be performing Kangana gladly gave over the Fashion songs to her colleague and friend.

Says Kangana, “When I got to know that Priyanka is performing I asked her about her songs. When she said she was doing the Fashion songs I happily decided to do the tribute to Aishwarya and Madhuri. I’ll be dancing to tracks like Madhuri’s Mera piya ghar aaya and Aishwarya’s Nimbooda. This gives me a chance to try out my Kathak which I’ve been learning for three years.”

Priyanka had ultimately opted out.

Says Kangana, “I think girl bonding is very cool. I can’t say Priyanka and I best friends. I think two actresses fighting is very unfashionable. After Fashion there’s a comfort level. And if we can share a platform without getting in one another’s way then isn’t that just great?”

Kangana somehow managed to drag herself to the show where she danced to her Fashion tracks.
