Paywall hits The Times online readership: report

(Reuters) – The Times newspaper’s website has lost two-thirds of its audience following the introduction of a paywall — a steep decline, but not as bad as some in the media industry had forecast, the Observer newspaper said.

Citing data from Experian Hitwise, which monitors Internet traffic, the Observer said visits to The Times’s website had fallen to 33 percent of the levels seen before readers were asked to register and pay for access.

It said the site had been expected to lose 90 percent of its traffic, but the drop may have been softened by an introductory offer for customers.

Neither Experian Hitwise or News International, which owns The Times, were immediately available for comment.

Rival newspapers will be closely watching the data as the industry battles to respond to a decline in circulation and a migration of readers to online news.

UPDATE 1-Reliance Comm, GTL Infra near tower deal-sources

June 27 (Reuters) – Reliance Communications (RLCM.BO), India’s No. 2 cellphone carrier, was close to a deal to sell its tower operations to GTL Infrastructure (GTLI.BO), people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

A deal could be announced as soon as Sunday, they said.

Debt-laden Reliance Communications, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani, earlier this month announced a plan to create an independent tower unit. It had previously planned to spin-off its 95 percent-owned telecoms infrastructure arm, Reliance Infratel, through an initial public offering.

Under terms of the proposed deal, GTL Infrastructure Chairman Manoj Tirodkar would own 30 to 35 percent of the combined tower business and Ambani would own 26 percent, with shareholders in the two firms holding the remainder, two of the sources said.

Newspapers have reported that Reliance Communications could combine its tower business with India’s GTL Infrastructure, and shares in GTL Infrastructure rose nearly 6 percent on Friday.

Shares in Reliance Comm, which has also said it is looking to sell as much as a 26 percent stake in itself, have risen 33 percent in June.

Reliance Comm and GTL Infrastructure both declined to comment. (Reporting by Rajesh Kurup and Pratish Narayanan; Writing by Tony Munroe, editing by Miral Fahmy)

Gazza’s ex-wife accepts five-figure payout from newspaper

London, May 8 (ANI): Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne’s ex-wife has accepted a five-figure payout from a newspaper over an article alleging that she was a liar.

Sheryl Gascoigne was present at the High Court in London for a brief hearing before Justice Tugendhat.

Her solicitor, Roderick Chisholm-Batten, told the judge that a News of the World article suggested she had lied by falsely claiming that her former husband had forced himself on her sexually and that she suffered repeated acts of violence at his hands.

The lawyer said the article was published on October 18, 2009, and entitled “You Lying Bitch”.

“The article suggested that Ms Gascoigne had lied in both her book and the interview by falsely claiming that Mr Gascoigne had forced himself on her sexually,” the Scotsman quoted Chisholm-Batten as saying.

“It also suggested that she had lied in both her book and the interview by falsely claiming that she suffered repeated acts of violence at the hands of Mr Gascoigne,” he stated.

The defendant, News Group Newspapers, “now accepts that each of these allegations was completely untrue”.

“It is here today, by its solicitor, to apologise publicly and unreservedly for the distress and embarrassment that this article has caused Ms Gascoigne. The News of the World has agreed to pay to her damages,” he said.

The damages figure was not disclosed in court, but Sheryl said that she was relieved.

“I am just glad it is all over and that justice is done,” she added. (ANI)

Peter Jackson rubbishes Hobbit production troubles rumors

London, April 21 (ANI): Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson has rubbished claims of his upcoming film ‘The Hobbit’ being delayed due to production problems.

Jackson has said that the project is still in its initial stage.

Filming of the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien”s first book was slated to begin in the summers of 2010.

Sir Ian McKellen, who stars in the series as wizard Gandalf, apparently confirmed the news in a recent post on his website, revealing the movie will be split into “two films” and will “start shooting in New Zealand in June,” reports The Daily Express.

Accompanying reports claiming that producers are not ready to begin filming for the movie has triggered speculation that the shooting has been held up, but Jackson is reaffirming that the rumours are not true.

“Well, it”s not really been delayed, because we”ve never announced the date. I mean it”s sort of interesting because the studio has never greenlit The Hobbit, so therefore The Hobbit has never been officially announced as a ”go” project, nor have we ever announced a date,” Jackson told Moviefone.com.

“But there”s so much interest that people – newspapers and magazines, of their own account, say, ”Ah, it”s likely to film in May, it”s likely to film in June, it”s likely to film in September”. People make this stuff up. And then if it”s not filming in June, you get a story saying, ”The Hobbit”s been delayed”. But it”s never actually been announced,” he added. (ANI)

Canada’s Conservatives lead in new opinion poll

TORONTO, April 11 (Reuters) – A new opinion poll puts Canada’s ruling Conservatives 10 percentage points ahead of their nearest rivals, but they still don’t have enough support to win a majority government.

Bonds

The Ipsos Reid poll, conducted for the CanWest group of newspapers and published in the Montreal Gazette’s online edition on Sunday, gave the Conservatives support of 37 percent of voters, up from 34 percent a month ago.

The opposition Liberals have the support of 27 percent of voters, down from 26 percent.

Under Canada’s first past-the-post electoral system, a party usually needs at least 40 percent of the vote to win a majority government.

“The big issue that Canadians care the most about, which is the economy, is clearly improving in the minds of the public, and given that the thing theyre really judging the government on is headed in the right direction, you can see why the gap is increasing,” the paper quoted pollster Darrell Bricker as saying.

Ipsos Reid interviewed 1,003 Canadian voters between April 6 and April 8. It considers its results accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 95 percent of the time, (Reporting by Janet Guttsman, editing by Philip Barbara)

‘Pretty’ dental hygienist named as Berlusconi party’s regional councillor

London, Mar 31 (ANI): Former TV showgirl Nicole Minetti, the oral hygienist who put the smile back on Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi”s face after he was assaulted in Milan last year, has been picked as a regional councillor for his party.

The 25-year-old was named as one of eight candidates on a “closed list” last month for the Lombardy region – despite having no political experience, reports The Daily Express.

It was presented by Berlusconi’s People of Freedom Party.

Minetti’s region includes Milan, the city where Berlusconi was hit in the mouth in December by a statue thrown at him during a political rally.

She had remained silent in the run-up to the polls, only speaking out when pictures of her wearing a gold bikini emerged in newspapers in Italy.

She said: “I do wish people would stop printing pictures of me when I was on TV. I was just doing some extra work to pay my way through university. I am ready. I have done my homework and I feel that I am qualified and up to the job.”

Minetti added: “I signed up to the People of Freedom Party about a year ago. I began to have a sympathy for them because I was attracted by Berlusconi’s charisma. I do admire him.” (ANI)

AHL boss denies allegations of tax rorts

The owner of Australia’s largest pokies operator has denied allegations of massive tax rorting.

Newspapers have reported that Bruce Mathieson, the owner of the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group, has rorted more than $15 million through private arrangements with sporting and AFL clubs.

Mr Mathieson says his business is legitimate, and has dismissed the claims.

He says he has no knowledge of any investigation against him, and is seeking legal advice.

“I don’t know anything about it,” he said.

“I’m sure the gaming commission doesn’t know anything about it or they’d be all over me like pepper and salt. It’s just an absolute farce as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Illegal dumping costing ratepayers

The Town of Port Hedland has expressed disappointment over the amount of illegal dumping of waste in bushland in the community.

Plastic bags, general household rubbish, old car batteries, newspapers and other waste have been found in an area known as Deep Water.

Mayor Kelly Howlett says the resources needed to clean up the mess is costing ratepayers.

“It is a shame, and the same with senseless vandalism of playgrounds and park equipment that if these things get destroyed, illegal dumping happens, the money ends up getting spent in those areas instead of being spent in perhaps creating new areas or perhaps adding new benefits to the town,” councillor Howlett said.

Offenders face fines of up to $1,000.

Editors Guild condemns attack on Andhra Jyothi

New Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday condemned the attack on Telugu news channel ABN Andhra Jyothi, allegedly by members of Prajarajyam Party (PRP) led by cine star Chiranjeevi.

In a statement issued here, the Guild also demanded to bring the culprits to justice.

“The Editors Guild of India strongly condemns this attack and hopes that the police will ensure the culprits are brought to book,” the statement said.

On Monday, angered over a news story telecast by the news channel on Chiranjeevi, the PRP activists attacked the channel’s head office in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills area.

The Guild has also noted with dismay the attack on the news channel.

“Such attacks on news channels are deplorable and cannot be justified in any way,” the statement said.

The Guild also urged all political parties to stay away from attacking journalists and media houses.

“Political parties in Andhra Pradesh and across the country must stay away from attacking journalists and their offices,” the Guild said.

In the statement the Guild expressed concern over increasing attacks on news channels and newspapers across the country.

“In recent months, there have been several attacks on newspaper and channel offices across the country, each attack raising serious questions for our democracy,” the statement said.

“In a civil society, disagreements must be conveyed through peaceful, democratic means,” the statement added. (ANI)

Research finds PR spinning most newspaper stories

Researchers have found more than half of newspaper stories surveyed over five days were driven by the public relations industry.

More than 2,000 articles from 10 newspapers were analysed by the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism at the University of Technology in Sydney and online publication Crikey in September last year.

The results showed nearly 55 per cent of all stories were triggered by public relations firms.

The Daily Telegraph came out on top with 70 per cent of its stories sourced from the PR sector, with the Sydney Morning Herald at 42 per cent.

Crikey editor Sophie Black says it is not what most readers would expect.

“It’s not to say there isn’t a role for public relations,” she said.

“But I think most readers would be very surprised to realise that a lot of the news they read has been generated by PR in some way.”

Crikey says most journalists and editors refused to respond when asked about the public relations element in their stories, and some later withdrew comments out of fear they would be reprimanded or fired.

A sporty year for consumers in 2009

Spending on sports equipment and activities grew faster in 2009 than any other area of consumer spending.

The latest figures, provided by the Bureau of Statistics, show that spending on sporting goods for recreation and culture jumped 39.1 per cent during the year.

Chief economist at Commsec, Craig James, says spending on sports could be due to people wanting to lose weight.

“It is interesting the way that we’ve actually outlaid our money over the last year, things like boats, caravans, bicycles, sporting equipment showed a huge increase a 39 per cent increase in 2009 compared with a year ago,” he said.

Sporting and recreational services, which includes things such as green fees and the hire of tennis courts, also increased by 17 per cent.

However, in comparison, spending on newspapers, books and magazines dropped by 13.2 per cent.

Mr James says the fall is likely due to a shift to electronic media and a dislike for bad news.

“Last year was a fairly gloomy year and people decided that they weren’t going to buy newspapers and magazines because there was too much bad news in it,” he said.

“I think there’s also some longer-term type factors in there, nowadays people are getting their news and information from electronic mechanisms rather than physical mediums like newspapers.”

Mr James says while decreased spending on newspapers and books could develop into an ongoing trend, he believes sports spending will level out this year.

”Paid news” a serous concern: Ambika Soni

New Delhi, March 5 (ANI): Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Friday described the ”paid news” as a serious matter and, said right of the public to receive correct and balanced information needs to be ensured.

In response to a ”Calling Attention Notice” on the issue, Soni said in the Rajya Sabha today, ” There exists strong circumstantial evidence of the malpractices,” and added that the phenomenon of ”paid news” is a serious matter as it influences functioning of a free press.

“When paid information is presented as news content, it could mislead the public and thereby hamper their judgement to form a correct opinion. Thus, there is no denying the fact that there is an urgent need to protect public”s right to correct and unbiased information,” she added.

Soni claimed the issue has wide ranging implications on the democratic structure and, it was important for all sections of society to look into the matter seriously.

The Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) has named six newspapers carrying numerous ”paid news” stories, she said in response to the notice given by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury.

Concerned over the issue, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said there should be a check on these malpractices and a regulator should be employed in the field to impose ”deterrent” penalties.

Jaitley sought to know from the Central Government whether they would take appropriate steps to root out the problem. (ANI)

Gender row runner Semenya shattered by her predicament

Johannesburg, Sep.16 (ANI): Sex test runner Caster Semenya is “completely shattered” by claims she is half male, her spokeswoman said.

The 800m world champion has shut herself away at her university amid claims that International Association of Athletics Federations gender tests proved she had internal testes and no womb, reports The Mirror.

Athletics South Africa official Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said she was struggling to come to terms with being humiliated on a global scale and has been placed on suicide watch.

She said: “Caster is completely shattered by all that has been said about her.

“She gets all the newspapers and reads them thoroughly. She has cable TV in her bedroom so there is no escape from all of this.”

The saga began four weeks ago at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin when the South African’s masculine looks and superb performances sparked talk that she might be male. (ANI)

Seven rare Brazilian simians stolen from Kolkata zoo recovered from Durg

Durg (Chhattisgarh), Aug 30(ANI): Seven of the eight Brazilian Common Marmosets, stolen from the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata were recovered from Chhattisgarh’s Durg district on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, Chhattisgarh Police nabbed a person, Raju Singh Soikia, here and rescued seven marmosets, it is believed that one of the stolen eight died.

“We trapped Raju by disguising ourselves as monkey buyers and told him to meet us. We then arrested him from the meeting point. After interrogation he told us that he and his friend in collaboration have committed this crime,” said Dipanshu Kabra, Superintendent of Police of Durg.

Kabra further said that these were rare species, which were used for genetic research as they are genetically close to human beings.

He also informed that the accused Raju and his friend Bobbai were planning to take the marmosets to Pune or Mumbai, where they could sell them at a good price.

However, the accused Raju denied all the allegations and said that he was innocent, and his friend Bobbai had committed the crime.

“I have not committed this crime. My dealer told me to keep the monkeys in my house for few days. He told me that he would collect them later. But, when the theft news was in the newspapers I contacted him. He told me not to worry as he had a license for this business. He deals in the birds which made me think that he is saying the truth,” Raju said.

Kabra also said that Bobbai, the key figure in the racket, is still absconding and Kolkata police are on the lookout for him. (ANI)

Three-quarters of Brits surf Internet in the loo

London, Aug 24 (ANI): A survey has revealed that Brits are so much into surfing the Internet that three-quarters of them even do it while they are sitting in the loo.

While newspapers and magazines are traditionally associated with an extended toilet session, modern-day trips to empty bowels appear to have taken on a digital nature, reports the Scotsman.

More than a third (34 per cent) of those polled said that they had sent a text message while on the loo.

The research also revealed that some respondents pass their time in bathroom visits thinking about their next meal (14 per cent) or even eating or drinking (6 per cent).

Even though 18 percent of them admitted that they suffered from cramps or pins and needles, nearly two-thirds were unaware that sitting on the loo for too long could cause haemorrhoids.

The survey of more than 2,000 Britons was carried out by Yakult to mark the launch of Gut Week, which aims to raise awareness of digestive disorders. (ANI)

Transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football: Wenger

London, Aug.22 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that outrageous transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football.

A power struggle at Barcelona between president Joan Laporta and his former No 2 Sandro Rosell has seen both men targeting Gunners midfield star Cesc Fabregas.

Asked about how much worth there was in these claims, The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying: “Apart from giving articles to newspapers, all the rest is rubbish. It doesn’t help football; it doesn’t help people to focus on their job. Sometimes it is quite destabilising.”

“The way that Spanish clubs are run is more political than sport orientated. How much does that harm other clubs? It’s difficult to measure, but it doesn’t help other clubs,” he added. (ANI)
