Britons ”spend more Internet time reading news than looking at porn”

London, May 20 (ANI): A new survey has found that Britons now spend more of their Internet time visiting news websites than looking at pornography.

Web users spend an average of 2.8 percent of their surfing time looking at news, as against 2.7 percent for online websites.

According to research by the United Kingdom Online Measurement Company (UKOM), the proportion of web time Britons spent looking at explicit content has fallen over the last three years.

Alex Burmaster of UKOM said that the figures punctured one of the myths of the technology world – that the Internet owes its popularity to pornography.

“The prevalence of web adult usage has always been greatly overestimated. The reality is completely different,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“To read about the internet you might think that all people do is browse for pornography, but that sector is not as large as people think it is,” he stated.

The study also showed that Britons now spend the equivalent of nearly a day a month online.

The amount of time we spend surfing the web has increased by 65 percent over the last three years, with the average surfer spending 22 hours and 15 minutes online each month.

Social networking is the most popular single online activity, with sites like Facebook and Twitter accounting for 22.7 percent of our surfing time.

The UKOM analysis showed that sending and receiving email was the second most popular thing to do on the web (7.2 percent of online time), just ahead of playing online games (6.9 percent).

But the rise of social networking sites appears to be killing off instant messaging services like MSN Messenger. We now spend just 4.9 percent of our web time on these sites, down from 14.2 percent in 2007.

The figures also show that people are increasingly turning to the Internet to read news; the proportion of Internet time spent on news websites has increased from 1.5 percent to 2.8 percent in three years.

“Despite the large increase in the amount of time people spend online and the increasing proliferation of websites and online services, one thing has remained constant and that is the bulk of time accounted for by communicating, networking and playing games,” Burmaster said.

“These are the pillars on which the Internet as a heavily used medium are built,” he added.

The research analysed the Internet use of Britons who went online at least once in the past month. (ANI)

Radio rules the roost as most trusted source of news in UK

London, May 19 (ANI): Video has not, after all, killed the radio star if a UK Office of Communications survey is to be gone by, as according to it, radio has emerged as the most trusted source of news in the UK ahead of TV and the Internet.

Ofcom, the independent telecom regulator for the UK, found that 66% of people considered radio to be reliable and accurate, compared with 58% for online, 54% for TV and just 34% for newspapers.

This year has been a lean one for the once infallible Television, with the Internet pipping it to bag the position of the second most trusted source for the first time.

However there was significant difference of opinion between adults and youngsters regarding the subject of reliability of news websites, with just 3 out of 10 adults rating them as “reliable and accurate”

According to the BBC, the survey, of 1,824 people over the age of 16, was conducted in 2009.

The survey also found the use of digital TV, Internet and mobile phones had increased since 2007.

About three quarters (73%) of adults used the Internet in 2009, up from two thirds (63%) in 2007, while 91% of the population used a mobile phone.

Half of all Internet users said that using the Internet had increased their contact with friends or family who lived further away, and about a quarter said it had increased their contact with friends who live nearby.

Social networking sites such as Facebook were among the most popular sites, with 35% of respondents regularly using the Internet to keep in touch with family and friends.

Reiterating the soaring popularity of online social networking, the survey found that twice as many Internet users had a social networking site profile (44%) compared with 2007, the BBC reports. (ANI)

Old media still a dominant source for information, news for Aussies: Survey

Melbourne, Mar 16(ANI): A new survey has found that Australians trust the supposed “old” media such as newspapers, television, and radio more than the Internet.

According to Essential Research survey, despite the recent protestations of web media proprietors, traditional media is still the dominant source for information on news and current affairs.

It is also more highly trusted than its Internet counterparts.

The survey, which took 1000 people into consideration, revealed that commercial TV news and current affairs is the most frequently consumed news media, with 87 percent of people saying they watched at least once a week. Newspapers came second, with 72 percent reading at least weekly.

In contrast, just 28 percent people said they accessed blogs at least once a week, and 62 percent of people said they accessed news websites at least weekly.

Essential Research’s Director Peter Lewis said the figures revealed how the consumers seek a distinction between news and opinion.

“It gives some encouragement to professional journalists that there is in the public”s mind a difference between news and opinion, and as long as that separation remains in the public”s eyes, there”s always going to be a place for quality journalists,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Lewis, as saying. Murdoch’s decision to charge for access to News Corp. websites opposed

Sydney, Aug. 9 (ANI): Readers of news.com.au, a website owned by Aussie media mogul Rupert Murdoch, have opposed Murdoch’s announcement that pay walls would be erected around all news websites by News Corporation.

A comment thread attached to a report about the announcement contained numerous replies from readers, who opposed the move and threatened to quit News Corp websites when the charges are applied.

“I’m clearing my bookmarks right now. Bye Bye,” The Sydney herald quoted a reader’s reaction in the thread.

Earlier, Murdoch had signaled that The Times and The Sun would begin charging for access to their websites within months, saying that quality journalism must come at a price.

“Quality journalism is not cheap, and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalising its ability to produce good journalism,” Murdoch had said.

Murdoch further revealed that plunging revenues from his newspapers had pushed the company into the red.

Murdoch had also said that he was not scared of losing readers due to this decision.

“If we are successful, we will be followed by all,” he said.

It is also believed that the same online strategy would be adopted at News Corp’s US businesses, which include the Fox News cable channel and The New York Post newspaper. (ANI)

Meet the girl whose ‘rear view’ captivated Obama at G-8

Sydney, July 12 (ANI): The girl who appeared to have caught the eye of US President Barack Obama and that of his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy at the G-8 summit in Italy has been identified as a 17-year-old social activist.

Mayora Tavares shot to fame overnight after a photograph depicting Obama seemingly looking at her bottom while Sarkozy also appeared to be taking in the view was published on news websites across the globe.

The Brazilian woman, a Rio de Janeiro resident, was reportedly selected to participate in the Junior G8 summit after working on a human rights study in two notorious Rio towns, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

In an interview with Brazilian television this month, she dubbed travelling to the G8 as an “inexplicable feeling”.

The photograph evoked many smirks and comments around the world.

One comment on a website said: “This young lady must be phenomenally beautiful. After all, even Sarkozy had to hang on to his jaw.” (ANI)

Fake Internet stories claim Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford to be dead

New York, June 26 (ANI): While news websites are constantly running stories of Michael Jackson’s and Farrah Fawcett’s death, internet pranksters have posted fake stories of the deaths of two more celebrities on the same day-’Jurassic Park’ actor Jeff Goldblum and ‘Indiana Jones’ star Harrison Ford.

However, the rumours of Goldblum and Ford’s untimely deaths actually turned out to be false, and were found to be well-known Internet pranks that once made similar claims of Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise.

“Reports that Jeff Goldblum has passed away are completely untrue. He is fine and in Los Angeles,” the New York Daily News quoted the actor’s publicist as saying in a statement Thursday night.

Snopes.com has reported that these stories are automatically generated with fake scenarios via prank websites, where users simply plug in any name – which in this case were Goldblum and Ford.

The fake stories suggested that Goldblum fell to his death while filming a movie in New Zealand.

On the other hand, Internet goons falsely claimed that Ford disappeared while on a boat in the French Riviera. (ANI)

Internet search engine Google slowed down between 2.40pm and 3.15pm Pacific time on 25 June (9.40 pm and 10.15pm GMT) yesterday as the news of Michael Jackson’s death broke.

Reports have indicated that online users had trouble accessing a number of news websites as they rushed to get information on the pop star’s sudden death.

Millions of people “Googling” the star’s name were greeted with an error page rather than a list of results – warning users that “your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application”.

Many blogs and industry sites suggested that there were problems accessing TMZ, Google News and the popular micro-blogging site Twitter, which pushed out its infamous “Fail Whale” to indicate when the site wasn’t accessible.

TMZ.com, a popular celebrity gossip web site, broke the story that Jackson had suffered a cardiac arrest after a tip-off that paramedics had visited the singer’s home.

Twitter.com crashed at least once and ran very slowly for some time – it recorded over 50,000 tweets about Michael Jackson’s death in just one hour – and this morning, Michael Jackson is ranked on seven of the top ten trending topics.

Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker, told BBC News online: “It’s true that between approximately 2.40pm Pacific and 3.15pm Pacific, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson and saw the error page.”

It was around this time that the singer was officially pronounced dead – 10.26pm GMT.
