Murdoch may shut down all British newspapers: Report

LONDON: Rupert Murdoch is reportedly considering the option of dispensing with the News International, the group that owns his British newspapers – The Sun, The Times and the Sunday Times, a media report said.

The media mogul discussed this possibility when he met his “inner circle” Wednesday, the Daily Express reported Thursday.

Sources said Murdoch was “locked in a series of meetings” to specifically consider the option, following the closure of the 168-year-old News of the World.

They said Murdoch was concerned to protect the reputation of the parent Ne

ws Corporation from further damage after the value of its shares went down.

While one said “Murdoch has the ruthlessness to amputate the arm that is threatening the rest of News Corporation,” another said a sale was now a “live possibility”.

Murdoch's American newspaper The Wall Street Journal also reported he was now examining selling News International.

“News Corp has informally explored whether there were any potential buyers for its UK newspaper unit,” it said.

Selling News International could fetch about 300 million pounds (around $484 million).

Hacking scam: Royals, Brown were victims

LONDON: The scandal engulfing Rupert Murdoch's media empire exploded in several directions on Monday, with fresh reports of phone hacking attacks against some of the nation's most powerful figures, including royals and former prime minister Gordon Brown.

Adding to the intrigue, Scotland Yard released an unusual statement accusing unidentified individuals of trying to sabotage its sprawling investigation. The police — themselves accused of accepting bribes from Murdoch's journalists — said somebody was deliberately planting distracting information in the press.

No one, it seems, had been safe from the prying eyes of corrupt journalists. Police officers betrayed members of the royal family to the News of The World, according to several reports. Other papers said Brown had his bank account broken into by a con man acting for Murdoch's Sunday Times.

The reports couldn't be confirmed, but they added to a sense of disbelief that has spread across Britain. “The events of last week shocked the nation,” Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt told lawmakers Monday. He said Britain's proud press tradition had been “shaken by the revelation of what we now

know to have happened at the News of The World.”

The British press has been furiously reporting allegations that journalists at the News of the World tabloid may have hacked into phones of young murder victims, families of dead servicemen and terrorism victims. The widening scandal has prompted Murdoch's News Corp. to close the tabloid and withdraw its promise to spin off Sky News — a move that forced Hunt to refer its bid for British Sky Broadcasting to competition authorities. The decision will delay the bid, although it was not immediately clear whether Murdoch hoped to buy time with the ploy in the hope the scandal would die down, or whether it was an implicit acknowledgement that the bid was dead.

A failure to clinch the $19 billion takeover would represent a huge setback for Murdoch, but even as the mogul was in London to try to contain the damage, as allegations against his empire rushed in. Media reported that Brown was one of thousands targeted by News International, saying that his personal details — including his bank account and his son's medical records — had been targeted by people working for titles including the Sun and the Sunday Times.

Want to start a family with Ashley: Cheryl

Singer Cheryl Cole has revealed that she is still in love with her footballer ex-husband Ashley and wants to get back with him so they can start a family together.

Cheryl, 27, had reportedly spent the night with her ex-husband at the couple’s former 5 million pounds marital home in Surrey.

And according to the News of the World, a source close to Cheryl, 27, revealed that the Girls Aloud member had told friends that she is very happy.

It was if we’d wound the clock back two years. I felt happy for the first time in a long time, the Daily Mail quoted the source as revealing what Cheryl had said.

She doesn’t want to wait until she’s over 30 to start a family. And she thinks Ashley’s the most natural person to be dad to her babies, the source added.

While her friends and family are said to be horrified at the possibility of a reunion between her and Ashley, 30, a friend of the Chelsea star said Cheryl is just following her heart.

She wants to follow her heart and do what will make her happy. But she has to sort her life out first, the friend said.

He was blamed for the end of the marriage and that’s fair enough. But Cheryl has to take some responsibility. Her career always came first.

But if Cheryl takes him back she’ll put everything into the relationship. Her career is far less important to her than starting a family, the friend added.

Green savaged by British press for costly error

(Reuters) – England goalkeeper Robert Green received stinging criticism at home on Sunday following an horrendous mistake which cost his side victory in their opening World Cup game against the United States on Saturday.

Sports

Millions of fans watching at home and in pubs across the country held their heads in their hands as West Ham United keeper Green let Clint Dempsey’s weak shot slip through his fingers in Rustenburg.

It wiped out Steven Gerrard’s early goal and the 1-1 draw now complicates England’s progress in the tournament.

“Hand of Clod” was the front page headline in the popular News of the World above the question Should Green be Dropped? The Sunday Mirror ran the same headline, a re-working of the “Hand of God” description of Diego Maradona’s controversial goal against England in 1986.

The Mail on Sunday also suggested that Green would be axed by England’s Italian coach Fabio Capello.

“Calamity! Robert Green faces England axe after howler hands Americans draw,” was its response to the mistake shortly before halftime in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The Sunday Express said Green would be squirming over his error, adding: “There have been few worse examples of the goalkeeping art in this famous competition.”

Most front pages carried a photograph of the ball trickling over the line past a horrified Green.

Former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper Bob Wilson pulled no punches in the Sunday Telegraph.

“There are no excuses. There were a couple of bounces en route, but it was just down to poor technique. It was a howler,” Wilson said.

Wider debate centered on the demise of England’s goalkeepers — a position that the country could justifiably claim to have the best stoppers in the world.

In recent years there have been high-profile mistakes by David Seaman, Paul Robinson and Scott Carson while David James, who was replaced by Green for the game against the U.S., is also prone to making errors.

The Sunday Times even managed to link Green’s fumble to the catastrophic oil disaster effecting the Gulf Coast in the United States. “One disastrous spill the Yanks won’t complain about” was their kicker under the headline Green Fingers.

One in three British kids watch porn

London, June 6 (ANI): The age of innocence may well be a myth if the results of a new survey are to be gone by, which reveals that one in three British children watch porn on the internet. Moreover, eight out of ten kids in the 14-16 year bracket regularly access pornography on their home computer.

Today’s wily youngsters are well-versed with the internet and manage to dodge parental interception with their savviness, while in other cases the parents themselves have not introduced any controls to regulate what the child has access to, giving the kids a free-hand to open whichever website they please.

Despite the alarmingly high number of porn watching kids, 70 percent of British teenagers claim never to have been intimate with anyone and most kids are accessing these depraved sex-videos even before having their first sexual experience.

According to the News of The World, this sort of unnatural exposure may even cause them to grow up into romantically dysfunctional human beings and might even make them more likely to commit rape, experts warn.

Hundreds of secondary-school kids were quizzed for the study by Psychologies magazine as part of the survey.

Leading sociologist Michael Flood told the magazine: “There is compelling evidence that pornography has negative effects on individuals and communities. Porn shows sex in unrealistic ways and fails to address intimacy, love, connection or romance.

Sex-addiction psychotherapist John Woods warned that watching it is more addictive than drugs or alcohol.

“The pendulum has swung too far. We are allowing abusive sexual imagery to be accessed by children. We need regulation but that needs people to say enough is enough and demand change,” he said.

British parents too are alarmed at the rampancy of the problem.

“We can”t continue to stick our heads in the sand about the potential effects of this,” said Justine Roberts of parents” support group Mumsnet.

“We are going to produce a generation with a terrifying idea of what sex is about,” she concludes. (ANI)

Prince Andrew forgives Fergie over ”cash for access” scam

London, May 26 (ANI): Prince Andrew has forgiven ex-wife Sarah Ferguson for her “cash for access” scam, it has emerged.

A sting operation by British tabloid the News of the World had recently caught the Duchess of York setting a price tag of 500,000 pounds on an introduction to Prince Andrew, promising to open the door to lucrative international deals for the ”client”.

But now Andrew has forgiven Fergie after she called him up and apologised.

She even offered to quit the room she has at his Windsor mansion.

But Andrew told her she could stay as long as wanted to.

“Andrew told her to calm down and get a grip. He is a very caring person, a loving father and he told Sarah not to be so silly,” the Mirror quoted a friend, as saying.

The insider went on: “He told her she had been set up and although she had clearly made a massive mistake, he wasn”t going to kick her out on to the streets. He knows she can”t afford anywhere – that”s why he let her stay at Royal Lodge in the first place.

“The other major reason was because Bea and Eugenie like being close to their mum. Whatever else she is, Sarah has always been an excellent parent and Andrew admires her for that. His attitude is that he isn”t going to tear his family apart because of one week”s bad headlines.”

The source added: “The fact is that when say they are the world”s happiest divorced couple, they really mean it. Sometimes you cannot understand why they split up in the first place. They will always be best friends and although the set-up seems weird to many people, it works for them.” (ANI)

Katy Perry, Russell Brand’s wedding plans

London, May 16 (ANI): Katy Perry and Russell Brand are planning a small wedding focusing solely on their love for one another rather than having a ‘drunk fest’.

They will fly their select guests to a secret location for seven days of celebrations, it has emerged.

Katy”s pal Rihanna has suggested they could get hitched in India where Brand proposed on New Year”s Eve and it looks like the location could be Goa.

The couple has sent out save-the-date cards to friends and family for their wedding.

The henna-inspired hand-shaped invites, complete with diamond engagement ring, and hints at an exotic location.

Guests have only been told to keep the week of October 18 free for their nuptials – and they”d better bring their passport.

The text reads: “Save the Week, For the Wedding of Katy & Russell. You will be contacted soon with more information.”

“The wedding will be small. I always have a ton of people around me and I think the people that are going to share this moment with us are the people we want to integrate into each others” lives,” News of the World quoted Katy, 25, as saying.

“We don”t want it to be a drunk fest of people, just one night and then forgetting about it. We want it to be about the love,” she added. (ANI)

Lover behind Peaches Geldof’s naked web pics tells all

London, May 16 (ANI): The American student who posted steamy photographs of Peaches Geldof on the Internet has opened up about their wild night together.

Ben Bluett Mills claims that he met her in November in LA and within hours they jumped into bed.

He has described their fling as a ‘crazy one-night stand’.

“We had a big chemistry considering we”d met just a few hours earlier. She was was very sexual, very comfortable with her body,” News of the World quoted Ben, 23, as saying.

Ben added: “Peaches” English accent had me hooked. I thought she was really cute and funny. But I put all that down to having a few beers now.”

When the shots they took that night became public they sparked a storm that cost Peaches her Miss Ultimo modelling contract and led to a bust up with her horrified dad Sir Bob Geldof, 58. (ANI)

MJ’s doc unlikely to face trial for two years

London, May 16 (ANI): Michael Jackson”s doctor is unlikely to go before a jury over the singer’s death until 2012, it has been revealed.

Huge delays in preparing the case against Conrad Murray mean he probably will not face trial over the singer’s death for two years.

Ed Chernoff, Murray”s lawyer, is fuming ‘many pages’ of documents collected by Los Angeles police have not been handed to the defence even though Murray was charged in February.

Proceedings could be drawn out even longer over problems with choosing a jury.

Chernoff fears his client will not get a fair hearing in LA.

The doctor is next due in court on June 14, but his lawyer says he will push that hearing back to September.

“We are looking at the trial starting in about two years in September. We”ve got a huge load-3,500 pages-of evidence to go through. And we have witnesses to speak to all over the world who have had contact with Jackson over the years. To properly defend Conrad it”s gonna take time to get all of our stuff together,” News of the World quoted Murray”s spokesman as saying. (ANI)

Six out of 10 Brits give thumbs up to David Cameron’s coalition government

London, May 16 (ANI): The British proletariat has given a thumbs up to the David Cameron led coalition, silencing cynics who felt that the government’s days are numbered, a survey has revealed.

According to the Ipsos MORI, poll more than 54 percent of the people are optimistic about the new Prime Minister’s helmsmanship ability. While 60 percent feel the Lib-Con alliance will do good for Britain.

Seventy two percent feel that Nick Clegg and Cameron’s decision to set aside their mutual differences to form the government was the right one.

Helen Coombs, Ipsos MORI’s deputy head of political research, told News of The World “We’re seeing a sense of optimism about the new coalition government.”

“It is clear that David Cameron is starting to build the same positive thoughts among ordinary people as he has done within our party. He did a wonderful job in lifting our spirits on election night when things weren’t going as we’d all hoped,” the paper quoted a Tory insider as saying.

Four out of ten — 41 percent — believe the country’s general economic condition will improve over the next 12 months.

A total 22 percent think it will stay the same and only 31 percent fear it will get worse.

But people are split over whether it will be able to make decisions, with nearly half believing both parties have sacrificed principles for the sake of power, the paper reports. (ANI)

Kerry Katona ‘finds love’

London, May 16 (ANI): Kerry Katona has found love in a painter and decorator named Adam Waldron, sources say.

The former atomic Kitten star reportedly spent a night with the 33-year-old at a friend”s home in Warrington.

Apparently, she dropped him off at his parents” home, where he stays, the next morning.

“Adam is her perfect man. She”s absolutely mad about him,” the News of the World quoted Katona’s friend, as saying.

The pal added: “Even though everyone has told her to keep away from men, Kerry can”t help herself with Adam.”

Katona parted ways with ex-husband Mark Croft earlier this year following three years of marriage.

The pal added: “Kerry is in a right pickle. One of the new rules of her management company was that she moved down south to be near them.

“Well, you can take the girl out of Warrington but you can”t take Warrington out of the girl.

“She is extremely vulnerable after dumping Mark. She”s using every opportunity to get back up north to be with Adam.

“She has met a lovely down-to-earth lad and being in love is all that matters to her.

“For the first time in ages she is smiling again. Kerry”s on cloud nine and absolutely adores Adam.” (ANI)

Ancelotti backs Chelsea to win Treble next year

London, May 16 (ANI): After winning Double, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has set his sights on a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup Treble next year.

Ancelotti said that he can fulfill owner Roman Abramovich’s ambition of winning Champion League without adding players to his squad.

“We wanted to win the Champions League this year. It didn’t happen but we will try next season. This team has the quality to win the Champions League without change. We have to be happy with these trophies. It’s right to have a celebration because we had a fantastic season,” News of the World quoted Ancelotti, as saying.

“For me it’s right to have a holiday but I want to think about next season. We know Chelsea have never won the Champions League and it’s one of our aims for next season. And we want to win the Premier League and the FA Cup again.

“We will start next season having won the Double. I think that will put more attention on us, but this is normal. We are proud to have this attention,” Ancelotti said.

Skipper John Terry celebrated the unique achievement in the club’s history and put Ancelotti on the same level as ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho.

“Jose is always going to be a massive part of this football club. But other managers have come here in the last three or four years and not really lived up to expectations.

“Now Carlo has come in and in his first season he has achieved something that no other manager or group of players have ever managed at Chelsea. So Jose will never be forgotten – but nor will Carlo and this group of players,” Terry said. (ANI)

Man City’s 80-mn pounds package for Gerrard and Torres

London, May 16 (ANI): To bring two of the best players in the Premier League to Eastlands, Manchester City is ready to give Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland as part of a 80 million pounds package for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

City’s only fear is that the pair will only leave Liverpool for another team in the Champions League.

Adebayor has been unhappy at City for most of the season and Ireland has failed to make an impact after winning last season’s player of the year award.

City is determined to make their mark in the summer transfer, as Gerrard and Torres are proven performers, News of the World reports.

Chelsea is also confident of getting Torres as part of a British record transfer fee; as they cannot offer players in exchange.

City’s bid for the Liverpool duo is ambitious, but they believe they are putting forward a solution to the Kop’s financial problems, the paper reports. (ANI)

Irish conjoined twins separated after 14-hour operation

London, May 16 (ANI): Irish conjoined twins Hassan and Hussein have been separated after a successful 14-hour operation.

The babies, who were joined at the chest, are recovering before they return home, from the hospital.

The mother of the boys Angie Benhaffaf, 36, from Co Cork in Ireland, has her hopes renewed.

“They”ll do everything, these boys. They”re my little fighters. They”ll do what other kids can do, probably even better,” the News of the World quoted her as saying.

She added: “I think they”re an absolute inspiration. Even now, they give so many smiles and cuddles, despite what they”ve been through.”

In the beginning, doctors at London”s Great Ormond Street Children”s Hospital were unconfident about the operation, as scans showed the brothers shared a heart and vital major organs.

Also, doctors had predicted, if the boys survived the surgery, they”d have to spend months in the Intensive Care Unit. Yet they were out by May 1 – just three weeks after the op.

Angie said: “When I think about the odds of what they”ve been through, it”s scary for us.

“We”re just these ordinary people from ordinary backgrounds, but what the boys have been through is so overwhelmingly miraculous, it can be quite scary sometimes.

“I still remember the surgeon, the world leader in conjoined twins, telling me the boys have made an ”unusually quick recovery”, words I”ll remember forever and take to my grave. That”s exactly what we want to hear.”

However, with more than 20 medics, including four surgeons and four anesthetists working in shifts, the surgery was eventually successful.

The father of the boys, Azzedine, said: “The day of the surgery was terrifying.

“We handed them over at 8.30am, and prayed until the amazing news at 11pm when we were told it had gone well.

“There was so much relief. People told me they thought I was going to collapse.”

However, the parents laughed that they strangely miss their children are no longer conjoined. (ANI)

Abramovich backs Ancelotti’s move to have Kaka at Chelsea

London, May 16 (ANI): Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will be awarding coach Carlo Ancelotti for winning Double title by backing his move to have Kaka at the club.

Ancelotti is a huge admirer of Kaka, who last year turned down a move to Manchester City.

Instead, Kaka headed to Real Madrid in a 56 million pounds switch from AC Milan but his first season in La Liga has been a troubled one, News of the World reports.

Kaka has been dogged by injury and has had to angrily deny rumours that he was more concerned about being fit for the World Cup than for Real Madrid’s domestic campaign.

Ancelotti is encouraged by rumours in his pursuit for Kaka.

The pair had a very successful, six-year relationship and won the Champions League together in 2007.

Abramovich has sanctioned to tighten the purse at Chelsea and that might be reflected in upcoming contract negotiations with the likes of Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka.

And the Russian owner is hopeful that talent from the academy will push through in the next couple of seasons.

But after the outstanding domestic season, he still wants Chelsea to win the Champions League and knows he needs to back Ancelotti and give him the financial tools to compete with the superpowers in the transfer market, News of the World reports. (ANI)

London, May 16 (ANI): Disgraced soccer star Marlon King, who is serving an 18-month sentence for molesting a 20 girl at London’s Soho Revue Bar and breaking her nose when she tried to resist his advances, has taken up Art classes to help control his temper as he serves time behind bars.

“Marlon says it calms him down. He gets so pent up and aggressive – he just flips,” News of the World quoted a prison source, as saying.

“Every morning after his exercises and breakfast, he goes down to the art room. He started off doing bits of fruit and last week he painted a model car.

“The other inmates find it hilarious but he says he likes the peace and tranquillity of it down there,” The source added.

King was persuaded to take up the hobby by staff at HMP Wayland, Norfolk, where he is serving an 18-month sentence. (ANI)

Jamie Murray to partner Laura Robson in Wimbledon mixed doubles

London, May 16 (ANI): Older brother of British No.1 Andy Murray, Jamie, will be teaming up with Laura Robson in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon this year.

Jamie, who is a doubles specialist, revealed his mixed doubles partner during the Sport Industry Awards 2010 on Thursday in Battersea, London.

Murray hopes that he and Robson can replicate the form he showed with Jelena Jankovic in 2007 when the pair took home the mixed doubles title at the All England Club.

“I’m looking forward to playing with Laura at Wimbledon. She’s a really good young player and I think we can form a great team together,” News of the World quoted Jamie, as saying.

He is also hoping that 2010 will be a big year for brother Andy.

“It’s a busy time at the moment but Andy’s showing much better form recently than he was before. Wimbledon is obviously the big one, so he’ll be gearing up towards that,” Jamie said. (ANI)

Snooker match fixing: Higgins claims innocence

London, May 10 (ANI): Snooker champion John Higgins has claimed innocence against allegations that he agreed to fix a match.

Describing the past few days as “emotionally draining for me and my family,” Higgins said: “In the last week I have experienced a whole range of emotions: despair, frustration, anger, rage and, most of all, a sense of betrayal.”

Undercover reporters, who have accused him of agreeing to fix a match, filmed Higgins.

The Scotsman quoted him, as saying that he believed the meeting with the journalists was to arrange a series of tournaments in the Ukraine.

Yesterday the News of the World also alleged that he had tried to bet against himself in last year”s World Championship final.

Higgins said: “Over the last three years I spent a lot of my time and effort to expand snooker into new territories. I wanted to take the magic of snooker to towns, cities and countries where people had only ever seen snooker on television. I wanted to act as an ambassador to spread that magic of snooker throughout the world. Despite the events of last week, it is something I believe in from the bottom of my heart.”

The three-times world champion is subject to disciplinary proceedings by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association over the allegations. (ANI)
