Couples calling it quits for petty reasons, divorce rate rising in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, May 11 (ANI): The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is alarmed at the rising rate of divorce in Putrajaya, a district in Kuala Lumpur. The divorce rate has been increasing by as much as three percent in recent times.

What is more disconcerting is that couples are separating for reasons as petty as their spouse forgetting to bring home their food of choice.

Jakim Family Development director Ghafani Awang Teh attributes this to the fact that these young couples stay in an age of instant gratification.

“I think it”s the affliction of modern times, where everything can be found at the blink of an eye, that young couples see divorce as an easy way out without even wanting to try to work out their problems first,” he told the New Straits Times.

He cited the case of a young woman who wanted a divorce after only three days of marriage as her husband had forgotten to buy the food she had asked for.

A study by Jakim revealed that 40 per cent of divorce cases in the last 10 years among Muslim couples were due to “irreconcilable differences”.

Other contributing factors were financial constraints, spouses being irresponsible, polygamy, drug abuse and extra-marital affairs.

Ghafani believes that the sanctity of marriage is no longer intact the way it used to be, “The statistics are pretty worrying. It seems that young couples no longer place importance on the sanctity of the family institution. In the last 10 years, 180,172 divorce cases have been reported,” he said.

Jakim has introduced a slew of initiatives to counter this phenomenon, including seminars, forums, conferences and workshops.

Besides Jakim, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry also views the high number of divorce cases among young Muslim couples seriously.

It said in a statement that from 2006, the ministry, through the Malaysia National Population and Family Development Board had implemented the SMARTSTART pre-marriage course for newly-weds and those who had been married for less than five years, the New Strait Times reports. (ANI)

Sex education not needed in Malaysian schools: Deputy Education Minister

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 28(ANI): Malaysian Deputy Education Minister Dr. Puad Zarkashi said sex education is not needed in schools across the country, and will not be introduced.

Dr. Zarkashi said elements of sex education were already being taught in schools in a subject called Social and Reproductive Health Studies (SRHS).

“Social and reproductive health studies is taught under Health Education and encompasses curricula of a wide variety of subjects such as Biology, Science, Additional Science, Moral Studies and Religious Education,” the New Straits Times quoted Dr. Zarkashi, as saying.

“There is no need for a specific subject called Sex Education,” he added.

Dr. Zarkashi said this in the Parliament, while replying to several ministries and organizations supporting the idea of teaching sex education.

He further said that SRHS teachers had attended courses held by experienced trainers, which were designed to expose the teachers to the proper approach needed to teach the subject.

“Our present syllabus also includes modules on the importance of making the right decisions where sex is concerned,” he added.

Dr. Zarkashi also stressed that parents should also play their role in discussing sex with their children and advise them accordingly.

“This will lessen sensitivities related to sex. Parents cannot leave the issue of sex for teachers to handle, they must also speak to their children about it,” he said. (ANI)

Shisha ”as bad as ciggies”

Kuala Lumpur, April 27 (ANI): Smoking a shisha pipe is as harmful as smoking tobacco, according to a new research.

People who smoke shisha, or herbal tobacco, can suffer from high carbon monoxide levels, the Department of Health and the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre has found, Qatar News Agency (QNA) has reported.

High levels of carbon monoxide can cause brain damage and unconsciousness.

Shisha is a water-pipe in which fruit-scented tobacco is burnt using coal, passed through an ornate water vessel and inhaled through a hose.

The research revealed that one session of smoking shisha resulted in carbon monoxide levels at least four to five times higher than the amount produced by one cigarette.

Dr Hilary Wareing, director of the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre, told the BBC”s Asian Network that the results of the research shocked her.

“Our mouths opened at the level of harm – none of the tests we did showed anything other than shisha is hazardous to health,” New Straits Times Online quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Malaysian officials crack down on ‘marriages of convenience’

Kuala Lumpur, March 29 (ANI): Malaysian officials are working to expose a syndicate believed to be involved in encouraging “marriages of convenience”.

Foreign women, who arrive in search of work, were said to be hiring local men as their husbands for a monthly fee of RM 5,000 to escape being deported or arrested.

“Most of them (foreign women) are from China and Vietnam. This is definitely the work of a syndicate and we are getting the police to help us crack it,” the New Straits Times quoted Immigration director-general Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman as saying.

The department expressed its helplessness against imposing stricter rules or controlling the situation.

NRD director-general Datuk Alwi Ibrahim said: “For now, there is no way for us to find out whether the marriages are genuine. There is no proof to show that they are marriages of convenience.”

A police source added: “This problem has been there for more than five years. We see this in most of the raids conducted at massage parlours, clubs, restaurants and entertainment outlets.

“These foreign women will produce their passports and marriage certificates stating that they had married locals.

“When officers ask them about the whereabouts of their husbands, they will say their husbands were outstation or could not be contacted.” (ANI)

Viagra laced fruit juices flowing in Malaysia!

Kuala Lumpur, Sept 14 (ANI): After being detected in coffee mixtures and sweets, Viagra has now been found in fruit juices.

After raiding more than 30 retailers and distributors dealing in the fruit juice, enforcement officers from the Health Ministry in Malaysia seized several hundred thousand ringgit worth of the product.

This followed after the ministry sent samples of the product for tests which confirmed the presence of sildenafil, reports The New Straits Times Online.

Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, Revatio and various other trade names, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.

According to a Health Ministry source, this was the first time they had encountered a case where sildenafil had been mixed with fruit juices.

The mixture is potent and deadly to people suffering from heart disease and high blood pressure.

“It was brought to our attention after several people complained to the ministry about the suspicious fruit juice,” the source said.

“The producer and distributor had claimed that the fruit juice had been produced from selected natural herbs which could improve sexual performance of men and women,” the source added.

Following test results, investigations were conducted to identify retailers and distributors involved in selling the fruit juice.

“More than 30 simultaneous raids were carried out nationwide. Officers were also concerned that the retailers and distributors would hide their stocks as the product had also been sold via direct selling,” the source said.

“At the raid at the company’s headquarters in Subang Jaya, three marketing officers and the store caretaker were questioned by authorities,” the source added.

Investigations revealed that the fruit juice had been in the local market for the past six months and had received good response from consumers.

The consumer needs to mix the powder with water before drinking. (ANI)

High Commissioner Tan Seng Sung said recent accidents, where Malaysians lost their lives showed that travellers need to be more careful when planning their travel to India.

Over 200 guests, including foreign diplomats, Indian officials and Malaysians attended the event hosted by the High Commission at a hotel here.

Another woman, who is part of the Malaysian entourage on the trip suffered severe injuries and is still recuperating in a hospital here, The NST Online reported.

Ipoh (Malaysia), Aug 25 (ANI): Perak Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir met 17 poor Sikh families after he promised to help the community financially.

The families from in and around the state capital are among the more than 350 Sikh poor and hardcore poor in the state identified by the Union of Perak Sikh Organisations (Upso) through the Sikh Single Mothers Association (Sikhmai).

Sikhmai is a non-governmental organisation allied to Upso and the only single mothers body for Sikh women in the country.

Taking an unscheduled break from an early morning meeting at the State Secretariat, Zambry spent 30 minutes discussing their problems.

He then instructed the state Development Office and the state Welfare Department to immediately help them.

The New Straits Times quoted Zambry as saying that he was concerned about the level of poverty in the Sikh community in the state, dismissing claims there were no poor or needy Sikhs in Perak.

“If there are no poor Sikhs in the state, who then are the people I am meeting in my office? I have spoken to them. I urge Upso to compile a complete list of Sikhs in the state whose household income is below RM700 a month, so the state government can help them as soon as possible,” he said.

He commended Upso and Sikhmai for approaching the state government directly for assistance, rather than protesting or demonstrating.

“It is through this type of engagement that the state government can better help the community. I hope this effort will continue, because only the Sikhs can tell me how the state government can help them,” Zambry said. (ANI)

Kuala Lumpur, August 9 (ANI): Companies in Malaysia are openly offering couples with baby sex selection methods, saying the procedures to have the desired gender are entirely “natural”.

“Choice Baby” offers to prepare a conception chart based on the analysis of data taken from selective parents like their blood type, date of birth and other personal information.

Jennifer Chin, the company ‘s sales manager, said the demand for gender selection had shot up over the years and her company enrolled more than 30 clients per month

“The gender chart will show the favourable days to attempt conception,” the New Straits Times Online quoted her as saying.

She added: “For those with two or three boys and want a girl or viceversa, this is an opportunity to get what they desire.”

Musical ‘The Merchants of Bollywood’ opens in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, July 14 (ANI): The cast of the musical ‘The Merchants of Bollywood’, based on the true story of choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant, is set to kick off its Asian tour with its first performance in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, tonight.

The Australian production is written and directed by Toby Gough, with choreography by Merchant herself.

The show is inspired by the real life story of Merchant and her grandfather Hiralalji, who is known as one of the founding fathers of classic Bollywood choreography.

The musical tracks the story of Ayesha Merchant, played by actress Carol Furtado, along with some of the hit songs from Bollywood films.

Furtado, who has performed the role more than 700 times since 2006, said that she approached her character with a fresh perspective every time.

“When the show’s over, I shut off and don’t think about it until the next performance,” the New Straits-Times quoted Furtado, a trained contemporary dancer, as saying

She regarded her debut performance in Zurich as a “nerve-wrecking experience”, as she had to perform the Indian classical dance kathak, which she had never attempted prior to joining the production.

“I had never done anything of this magnitude before and felt that the responsibility was too huge for me to shoulder,” said Furtado.

“So after the first show, I just cried for an hour. I just had to get it out of my system. And it all went great after that,” she added. (ANI)

Women avoid late marriage, men tight pants to escape infertility

Kuala Lumpur, July 13 (ANI): Women better avoid late marriage and men tight pants, for they may lead to fewer babies, according to a Malaysian study.

Dr V. Jeyabalan a Pantai Hospital fertility specialist, says that blames smoking, casual sex, and junk food are the other factors that are to blame for causing infertility.

“The changing role of women is the main reason for their infertility,” the New Straits-Times quoted him as saying.

“They are getting married late now as they have to build a career alongside men to become equal breadwinners,” he added.

He said so while reacting to a recent United Nations Children’s Fund report that Malaysians were having fewer babies these days, compared with the situation in 1990.

According to him, the intake of junk food-which mostly contained additives and meats injected with hormones-has increased among career-oriented women

He says that such women also have multiple sex partners, and that they sometimes even indulge in casual sex, which results in sexually transmitted diseases.

“Venereal diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis combined with previous abortions and smoking, which has gradually become increasingly common among women, can prevent conception and sometimes cause miscarriages,” he said.

He said of the 30 couples he saw on the average daily, most of the men and women were aged between 30 and 40 seeking to have their first child.

Jeyabalan pointed out that wearing tight pants and the presence of petrol fumes and chemicals around their workplaces generally reduce fertility among men.

He called on the Government to get insurance companies to pay the bills of those seeking fertility treatment.

“In Western countries, because fertility treatments are expensive, the cost is either subsidised by the government or it can be claimed against a patient’s medical policy. But in Malaysia, those who suffer from childlessness can do neither,” he said. (ANI)

Malay company raided for selling ‘Viagra coffee’

Kuala Lumpur, July 5 (ANI): A Malaysian company in Gombak has been raided for marketing coffee mixture with a secret ingredient that guaranteed to “perk up” drinkers – later identified as Viagra.

Enforcement officers from the Health Ministry found the direct-selling company used individuals to distribute the product in small quantities to hoodwink authorities.

The secret ingredient was found to be sildenafil, popularly known as Viagra, the purchase of which is allowed only with the presentation of a medical examination report, along with a doctor’s recommendation.

“The coffee mixture had been distributed in sachets nationwide.

Officers found 900 boxes containing more than 9,000 sachets of the coffee mixture which retailed for more than RM80 per box,” the New Straits Times Online: quoted a ministry spokesman as saying.

The spokesman continued: “Investigations revealed that the distributor attempted to mislead the public by claiming that the coffee mixture could provide an energy boost, besides being beneficial for men.”

He added: “A coffee mixture containing the dangerous chemical is sold for between RM5 and RM10 per sachet compared with coffee mixtures which retail for between RM1 and RM2 per sachet.” (ANI)

Only 3 Malay-Indians have requested for education aid

Ipoh (Malaysia), June 29 (ANI): Only three Malay-Indian students in Parek have applied for Dermasiswa or education aid for further studies in last four months.

The New Straits Times quoted state executive councillor Dr Mah Hang Soon, as saying that the state government was concerned about the low education aid requests from the Indian community against 205 Malays and 170 Chinese students’ requests.

Dr Mah said the low figure could be due to poor publicity about the aid programme for Perak-born students.

“I believe many in the Indian community do not know about the aid programme. But, this can be rectified. The state government will work with Tamil newspaper organisations and others to publish information about the aid scheme,” he said.

A total of 378 students applied for, and received, aid to pursue certificate, foundation, matriculation, diploma, advanced diploma and degree courses, Dr Mah said.

The Parek government doles out: 300 ringgits for students pursuing certificate, matriculation and foundation courses, 500 ringgits for diploma courses, 1,000 ringgits for advanced diploma and non-professional degree courses, and 1,200 ringgits for professional degree courses.

Since the aid amount is nominal, students are not required to repay it. (ANI)

Malay robber’s bail posting wife turns out to be sari-clad man!

Kuala Lumpur, Jun 25 (ANI): A woman, who appeared in the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur to post bail for her husband, caused a major stir when it was discovered that “she” was a “he”.

The matter came to light when P. Ramesh, 40, who had been charged with committing robberies, pleaded not guilty.

Judge Zainal Abidin Kamarudin on checking the wife’s identity card (MyKad) went pale when he discovered “her” name to be Rajandren a/l Nagarajan.

On reading the card, the judge was prompted to ask the “woman”, who was dressed in a brown sari and matching blouse if they were indeed married, to which “she” just smiled and nodded her head.

Rajandren told the judge they had had a traditional marriage but had yet to register the marriage with the authorities because his sex status had not been changed with the National Registration Department.

“So how should I address you, ‘Puan’ or ‘Encik’? For now I will just follow what is stated in your MyKad and call you ‘Encik’,” the New Straits Times Online quoted Zainal Abdin as saying.

The judge also added that this was the first time he had come across such a situation.

Ramesh and an accomplice, D. Shanmuganathan, 31, were jointly charged with four others, still at large, with robbing RM500, a copy of a Bangladesh passport and two Auto-Teller Machine cards belonging to Babul Nejamuddin in front of Menara Maybank, Jalan Tun Perak here around 10.30pm on April 16.

Zainal Abidin allowed him bail at RM5,000 in one surety and fixed July 30 for re-mention. (ANI)

One in every 20 Malaysian Sikhs living in Perak is a hardcore poor

Ipoh, June 23 (ANI): Malaysian Sikh community leaders have said that one in every 20 Sikhs living in Perak is a hardcore poor.

The Sikh community’s hardcore poor numbers around 1,500, constituting about 400 families, or five per cent of the total 28,000 Sikhs in the state.

This information so astounded Menteri Besar Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir that he has decided to include the eradication of hardcore poverty among Sikhs in his administration’s action plan.

After meeting the Union of Perak Sikh Organisations (Upso), he said the data on hardcore poor within the community took him by surprise.

“Like many others, my worldview of the Sikhs has been that they don’t have severe socio-economic problems like other communities. But, after listening to Sikh leaders talking about the level of hardcore poverty in the community, I must say that it did shock me,” the New Straits Times quoted him, as saying.

He said the state government viewed the issue of hardcore poverty seriously.

Leaders of Upso, an umbrella body representing seven Sikh non-governmental organisations, met Zambry to highlight various problems faced by the state’s Sikh community.

The group also highlighted the need for state government intervention to help with issues involving single mothers, language and education.

Zambry also pledged to look into land problems faced by several gurdwaras in Malaysia.

Zambry, who spent almost two hours listening to Sikh leaders, also agreed to the setting up of a Sikh advisory body, so that it would be easier for the community to bring up its problems directly with the state government.

“I encourage the Sikhs in the state to unite behind one organisation or body so that it will be easy to deal with the state government and vice-versa. I think the board proposal is good one and ought to be studied and implemented.”

In the meantime, he said Upso could act as an intermediary between the community and the state government. (ANI)

Malaysian cops rescue chained-up loan defaulters

Kuala Lumpur – Malaysian police have rescued three men who were chained like dogs and beaten for two months after they failed to repay their loans to illegal moneylenders, a news report said Thursday.

The trio had been held in cell-like rooms and chained by their necks and feet to water pipes, with their alleged captors saying they would not be released until their families paid their debt, ranging from 1,500 ringgit (405 dollars) to 4,000 ringgit, district police chief Abdul Rahim Abdullah said.

Abdul Rahim said police were led to an unoccupied shop in the capital Kuala Lumpur Wednesday by two of the suspects who were detained earlier in the week.

“The victims were very weak. They were given medical attention immediately.

“They were wearing the same clothes they had on for the past two months and had been beaten regularly with sticks,” he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times daily.

The men, aged 25, 34 and 49, cried when seeing the police, the report said.

Abdul Rahim said firemen used an electric chainsaw to cut through the thick chains, adding that authorities did not rule out the possibility of more “holding cells” throughout the city.

The case would be investigated for hostage-taking, a charge which carries a jail sentence of up to 30 years.

Despite continued warnings by government and police on the dangers of borrowing money from illegal moneylenders, who charge exorbitant interest rates, many locals still look to the moneylenders for fast and quick cash.(dpa)
