Jennifer Aniston keeps fit by running around horse track

Washington, September 20 (ANI): Jennifer Aniston has been running hard to maintain her fitness while shooting new film ‘The Bounty.’

The actress reportedly woke up at 5a.m in the morning and ran laps around New Jersey’s Monmouth Park racecourse to the surprise of the crewmembers.

“She showed up every morning at 5am to run laps on the giant oval for a solid hour before cameras rolled,” Contactmusic quoted a source as saying.

“She’s really disciplined about keeping fit. She’d get there before everyone else and zip around that huge track like a winner!” the source added.

The ‘Break-Up’ star apparently prefers running to other fitness regimes as it keeps her thighs and calves toned.

Even earlier this year, it was reported that she woke up at 3am to work out so that she could stick to her busy shooting schedule.

A source said at the time: “Jennifer has had a totally overhaul for this film. She wants to be seriously fit, yet remain curvy.

“There are a lot of early starts on set, so she has had to get up at 3am to get two hours in the gym before getting ready for filming.” (ANI)

50,000 American Muslims to attend prayer meeting on Washington Mall on Sep.25

Washington, Sep.13 (ANI): At least 50,000 American Muslims will participate in a national prayer gathering for September 25 in Washington, D.C.

According to a report filed by The Star-Ledger, the gathering is taking place in the city’s National Mall area and is being organised by representatives of a mosque in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The paper quoted Hassen Abdellah, president of the Dar-ul-Islam mosque and an event organizer, as saying: “Most of the time, when Muslims go to Washington, D.C., they go there to protest some type of event…This is not a protest. Never has the Islamic community prayed on Capitol Hill for the soul of America. We’re Americans. We need to change the face of Islam so people don’t feel every Muslim believes America is ‘the great Satan,’ because we love America.”

The Star-Ledger reports that “A permit from the Capitol Hill police, granted July 28, allows access to the area by the West Front of the Capitol building from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 25, but the main gathering will occur at 1 p.m., for the Friday prayer service.

Abdellah said he expects 50,000 people to attend, from mosques around the country, though non-Muslims are welcome, too.”

Abdellah stated the idea germinated after President Obama’s inaugural speech, and was reinforced by this summer’s Cairo address: “For the first time in my lifetime,”

Abdellah said, “I heard someone of his stature speaking about Islam and Muslims not in an adversarial sense, but in the sense of being welcome and acknowledging we are integral citizens in the society-that we’re gainfully employed, we’re educated.”(ANI)

Salman Khan puts off US trip fearing detention by immigration officials

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Bollywood star Salman Khan who is scheduled to go to USA early next month reportedly cancelled his visit on Friday.

According to sources Khan decision comes in the wake of the humiliation faced by Sharukh Khan at New Jersey Airport.

Khan is scheduled to partake in a promotional event of his upcoming movie ” Wanted” besides participating in an auction of his personal paintings to raise funds for charity.

Khan’s decision was also propelled by the hard time being given by the US Consulate in Mumbai in approving the visa of his associates, including one of his family members, whom Salman wanted to bring along with on the promotional trip, sources said.

Besides Khan, producer Boney Kapoor, Bollywood star Sridevi and Prabhu Deva were also scheduled to attend the promotional event.

Following the Shahrukh Khan episode, which attracted a lot of media publicity both in India and the US, there is a sense of reluctance among local promoters and organisers of Bollywood events to risk inviting stars, sources added.

Khan’s decision has put a bug question mark before the promoters and also local organisers in cities like Chicago, Houston and Dallas who have invested a lot of effort and money in organising these events. (ANI)

Kennedy led high quality of life up to his death, say doctors

Washington, Aug. 27 (ANI): Senator Edward M. Kennedy maintained a very good quality of life after he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

He continued speaking in front of Congress and making public appearances almost up until the time of his death on Wednesday morning at his home on Cape Cod.

“For a man in his 70s, he did very, very well,” Fox News quoted Dr. Michael Gruber, professor of neurology and neuro-surgery at NYU School of Medicine and Director of the Brain Tumor Center in Summit, New Jersey.

“He was walking unassisted (up until the end), he was lucid,” Dr. Gruber added.

Dr. Suriya Jeyapalan, a neuroncologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that Kennedy’s condition was treatable, but not curable.

More than 18,000 primary malignant brain tumors are diagnosed each year in the United States; about 9,000 of those are malignant gliomas, according to the National Cancer Institute.

In general, half of all patients die within a year.

However, patients with malignant gliomas often maintain a very good quality of life after their diagnosis, Gruber said.

Gruber said the fate of a brain tumor patient depends on the location of the tumor. For example, if the tumor is located on the frontal or temporal lobe, then the patient’s speech might be affected.

Since Kennedy’s tumor was on the left parietal lobe, he suffered seizures. Other brain tumor patients may lose the ability to walk, lose vision or lose comprehension skills, depending on where the tumor lies or if the tumor invades other parts of the brain.

Kennedy underwent targeted brain surgery on June 2, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. The surgery lasted for about 3 1/2 hours and Kennedy spent some of that time awake.

Targeted brain surgery is a delicate balance – removing as much tumor as possible improves cancer control, but there’s also the risk of harming the healthy brain tissue that lets patients walk and talk.

This is why doctors keep patients awake and talking during the surgery to make sure they’re steering clear of delicate areas of the brain. The surgery, considered a success, was followed by months of chemo and radiation therapy.

Kennedy has suffered other health problems over the years.

In October 2007, doctors performed surgery to clean out a partially blocked neck artery, which left untreated, could have trigged a stroke.

In 1964, Kennedy suffered several fractured bones in his back, broken ribs, and internal bleeding after he was involved in a plane crash.

Two people died in that crash. (ANI)

Musician reunites with £300K violin forgotten in NY cab through GPS!

London, August 19 (ANI): A musician has GPS technology to thank for a reunion with his 300,000-pound violin that he forgot in a New York cab.

Hahn-Bin left the 18th century instrument in a yellow taxi while heading back home from a concert.

The absent-minded 22-year-old later realised his loss after reaching his Chinatown apartment and called the city’s taxi authorities and the police.

“Losing an instrument is a greatest fear, even more than making a mistake on stage,” the Telegraph quoted Hahn-Bin as saying.

The taxi dispatcher located the cab with ease since all yellow taxis are fitted with GPS trackers.

Overnight records showed that the musician had been dropped off by Dalbir Singh, before the driver finished his shift and headed home to New Jersey, where the violin was safely waiting. (ANI)

USINPAC calls Shahrukh Khan incident a teaching moment

Washington, Aug.18 (ANI): The US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) has termed the questioning and checking of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan at the Newark International Airport in New Jersey as a teaching moment, and while lauding immigration officials for their professionalism, has demanded fair treatment to all tourists and visitors.

USINPAC chairman Sanjay Puri said: “We commend the Department of Homeland Security for protecting our homeland. United States has not suffered a single terror attack after 9/11, and that is a testament to their efforts. But fair treatment for tourists and visitors based on their race, religion or national origin and protecting our homeland are not mutually exclusive and in fact are part of the ethos of what makes the United States a magnet for people seeking freedom and opportunity. President Obama in Cairo talked about a new beginning with Muslims around the world. One of the quickest paths towards that goal is fair treatment for visitors to the United States of different religious faiths.”

USINPAC National Security Coordinator, Manish Thakur added: “These kinds of incidents heighten the need for racial sensitivity. The reaction in India should be seen in the same light as the outcry in this country after the arrest of prominent African American Harvard scholar, Henry Louis Gates at his home.

President Obama called that a teaching moment for the country on race relations and maybe this can turn into a teaching moment as it relates to fair treatment of visitors to the United States.”

USINPAC is the political voice of 2.7 million Indian-Americans and provides bipartisan support to candidates for federal, state and local office who support the issues that are important to the Indian-American community. (ANI)

Bodies of three recovered from Hudson River

New York, Aug.9 (ANI): The bodies of three of the nine presumed victims of a helicopter-plane collision over the Hudson River have been recovered, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Saturday.

NTSB chair Deborah Hersman says the recovery operations have been called off and will resume Sunday morning, due to compromising tides and low visibility.

The accident happened just after noon between Manhattan and Hoboken, N.J. when a small private plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter over the Hudson River, leaving debris scattered in the water and on the New Jersey shoreline, sending witnesses ducking for cover, reports the NYT.

The sight-seeing helicopter was carrying five Italian tourists and a pilot, and the plane was carrying a pilot and two passengers, one of whom is believed to have been a child, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at an afternoon press conference.

“This is not going to have a happy ending. This has changed from a rescue to a recovery mission. If anybody had survived, we would have been there,” said Bloomberg.

Both craft are under water and may have sunk to a depth of 30 feet, he told reporters.

Though it was a crystal-clear summer day in New York, visibility is only about two feet in the water, making the recovery process extremely difficult.

The plane, a Piper PA-32, took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, and the helicopter was a Eurocopter AS 350 owned by Liberty Tours, a sightseeing and charter company, the Federal Aviation Administration said. (ANI)

Why some women develop breast cancer earlier than others

Washington, July 15 (ANI): Researchers at New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center have taken a step towards unlocking the mysteries of why some women develop breast cancer at an earlier age than others.

The researchers have expanded a study to identify genetic markers in women with the disease, and their trial will now include more healthy volunteers as well.

According to state health statistics, roughly 13 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in New Jersey are younger than age 45, while nearly half of the women diagnosed with the disease and seen at CINJ are not yet 50.

And now, the investigators are hoping to shed light on these figures through an ongoing clinical trial whose goal is to identify genetic markers for the disease.

By including larger numbers of healthy women in the study, the researchers could pinpoint genetic differences between women who develop breast cancer and those who don’t.

Researchers led CINJ medical oncologist Dr. Kim M. Hirshfield recently discovered that some genes might be associated with increased risk of developing breast cancer, while others may actually protect against the development of the disease.

These same gene variations may also play a role in breast cancer outcomes.

“If we are able to identify these slight variations, we can learn more about how breast cancer develops and its outcomes. This information could one day lead to more tailored treatment for those with the disease and perhaps even better prevention methods and screening recommendations,” said Hirshfield.

She noted that the majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors, and that only five to ten percent of breast cancers are actually caused by changes or mutations in known breast cancer genes.

Study participants will have blood drawn for laboratory analysis. The sample will be used to obtain blood cells as well as DNA. Facts about one’s breast health and overall medical history will be documented.

Both the blood sample and the clinical information will be analyzed and saved for possible future use.

Investigators are looking for more than 3,000 participants to complete the study.

Women and men aged 18 or older with no history of breast cancer, with a diagnosis of breast cancer, or a breast abnormality indicating increased risk for development of breast cancer are eligible to take part in the trial, although other criteria must be met. (ANI)

Danielle Staub of ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ has real criminal past

New York, Jun 25 (ANI): Reality TV star Danielle Staub of ‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’ has been exposed to have a real criminal past.

The court documents posted on TheSmokingGun.com reveals that Staub was involved in a kidnapping and extortion case, which also involved drugs, reports the New York Daily News.

Staub, who had then gone by the name of Beverly Ann Merrill, had placed calls to a kidnapped victim’s father and threatened to cause bodily harm to the hostage unless he came up with some money.

The criminal complaint, dated June 24 1986 and filed in the U.S. District Court in Miami, also accused Staub of cocaine possession with intent to distribute.

As per the story revealed by the website, Merrill had been working with a distributor for a Colombian drug family named Daniel Aguilar.

The partners in crime were out about 24,000 dollars worth of cocaine after a deal went awry. Trying to recoup their loss, they kidnapped the man they blamed for the deal’s failure, named in the complaint as Carmen Centolella.

Then Merill placed calls to Centolella’s father demanding 25,000 dollars in ransom money – or else.

Feds traced the calls and then arrested the duo, who were caught red-handed in a Miami apartment with six kilos of coke and 16,000 dollars in cash.

She was indicted weeks later on eight felony counts, including extortion, cocaine possession, and narcotics conspiracy, and in order to receive a lenient sentence, she agreed to cooperate fully with prosecutors and the FBI.

In November 1986, she was sentenced to five years probation, with her co-conspirator Aguliar getting 15 years in prison.

Even though she has denied her drug use and past as a prostitute on the show, saying only that she was a former pothead, documents on TheSmokingGun.com would seem to contradict her.

Papers have Staub admitting to working for an escort service and being ordered to continue treatment for her severe “Drug history and drug lifestyle”. (ANI)

Man drinks daughter’s breast milk to cure his cancer

London, May 29 (ANI): Tim Browne, a cancer victim, is drinking his daughter’s breast milk every morning to keep the disease at bay.

Retired teacher Tim has been diagnosed with terminal colon and liver cancer.

After reading a research which showed that a protein in the milk can destroy cancer cells in children, Browne – who went through chemotherapy in vain -asked daughter Georgia to express milk for him.

Georgia has an eight-month-old son, reports The Sun.

Tim, 67, pours it on his breakfast cereal. He says it tastes “not unpleasant, but slightly pungent”.

Georgia said: “A man in America had prostate cancer and swore drinking breast milk every day reduced his tumours.”

Dr Lori Feldman-Winter, of Cooper University Hospital, New Jersey, confirmed: “There is promising research indicating the solution for treating and curing cancer might be in human milk.”(ANI)

Springsteen’s alleged lover hits back at ‘lying’ husband

London, May 22 (ANI): The woman accused of having an affair with veteran singer Bruce Springsteen said her husband was lying in order to land a “big money” payout from the superstar.

Arthur Kelly, who is currently battling his divorce with wife Ann, had alleged in papers filed in Monmouth County on March 27 that Springsteen was having a long affair with his wife.

Springsteen’s wife of 17 years Patti Scialfar has also rebuffed Kelly’s allegations.

In legal papers filed at New Jersey court, Ann insists her spouse deliberately chose a celebrity to name in the case in a bid to win a big settlement, reports the Daily Express.

“(Kelly) and his attorney felt there could be ‘big money’ in this… because, true or not, the celebrity would want this to ‘go away,’” the papers claim.

Ann Kelly’s father had also blasted his son-in-law, insisting he and his attorney are “just seeking sensationalism” by naming Springsteen, adding: “They are dredging up mud that doesn’t exist.” (ANI)

Brooke Shields to sue reporter for checking out her mum from hospital

London, May 18 (ANI): Brooke Shields is all set to file a case against a journalist who allegedly checked her ailing mother out of a nursing home for an interview.

According to reports, Teri Shields, who suffers from dementia, allegedly left a New Jersey nursing home on May 14 with a writer seeking a “tabloid story”.

Later, the 75-year-old lady was found unharmed talking to a freelance reporter at a restaurant adjacent to an assisted living centre in Old Tappan, revealed the police.

“I intend to take every lawful action against all who were involved or who authorised this despicable act,” the Daily Express quoted Shields as telling People magazine.

“My mother Teri Shields has been diagnosed with dementia. For her safety, she has temporarily been in a senior living facility, a very difficult decision for me. Late Thursday afternoon, I was alerted by Old Tappan Police that my mother had been signed out of the facility by two reporters of the National Enquirer… who falsely claimed they were friends of hers.

“As anyone knows who has a parent who suffers from dementia or Alzheimer’s, it is one of the most difficult experiences you can go through as a son or daughter. The idea that the National Enquirer took advantage of her state is reprehensible and disgusting,” she added.

A representative for the National Enquirer refused to comment on the issue.

No arrests have been made, but the case remains under investigation. (ANI)

US Senators oppose extending emergency aid to Pakistan

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Questioning the credibility of Pakistani leaders, two senators have strongly opposed the Obama Administration’s plans to hand out 497 million dollars in emergency aid to Pakistan.

Tennessee Republican Senator Bob Corker said, “It will be a monumental mistake” if the administration sent aid to Pakistan without proper congressional oversight.

Senator Corker opposed sending the aid to a country where some of the leaders have been called “Mr. ten per cent” because of corrupt track record.I would like to know how the money would be circulated in Pakistan, and will not end in bank accounts in Switzerland,” The Dawn quoted him, as saying.

Senator Bob Mendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, said he had voted for bills supporting Pakistan on several occasions in the past, but he was not going to vote for this move.

He asked US special envoy Richard Holbrooke to come to his chamber and convince him why he should vote for giving aid to Pakistan without proper oversight.

“Unless, I really hear what the strategy is, and I have not heard that so far, you may not have my support on this,” he said.

The lawmakers were speaking at a special hearing of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on the current situation in Pakistan.

Holbrooke said he was willing to come along General David Petraeus, who is in charge for US military operations in the Pak-Afghan region, to the offices of these senators to persuade them to support the bill.

Earlier, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs had said, “The president has said on numerous occasions there shouldn’t be and there won’t be blank checks.” (ANI)

Bill and Melinda Gates pour thousands into unconventional health research

London, May 5 (ANI): Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has thrown a lifeline to number of projects like creating an anti-viral tomato, a flu-resistant chicken and a magnet that can detect malaria, awarding 81 grants of one lakh dollar each in a bid to support innovative, unconventional global health research.

The five-year health research grants are designed to encourage scientists to pursue bold ideas that could lead to breakthroughs, focusing on ways to prevent and treat infectious diseases, such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia and diarrhoeal diseases.
Among the grant recipients is Eric Lam at Rutgers University in New Jersey, who is exploring tomatoes as an antiviral drug delivery system, The Telegraph reported.

Three British scientific teams, pursuing novel approaches to preventing and treating infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and pneumonia, have been chosen.

One team, led by researchers at the University of Exeter in Devon, England, will seek to build an inexpensive instrument to diagnose malaria by using magnets to detect the waste products of the malaria parasite in human blood.

Scientists from Royal Holloway University, London, are attempting to compile a library of all possible mutations of HIV with the ultimate goal of a vaccine that can protect against many variant forms of the virus.

Each grant recipient will also get the chance of follow-on grants of one million dollar if their projects show success.

Applicants were selected from more than 3,000 proposals, with all levels of scientists represented – from veteran researchers to postgraduates – and a range of disciplines, such as neurobiology, immunology and polymer science. (ANI)
