First World War sketches unveiled in Britain after 94 years

London, Apr 20(ANI): A series of previously unseen drawings of the First World War have been unveiled 94 years after they were deemed to be too sensitive for the British public.

The drawings by Sir Muirhead Bone were first published in newspapers to boost morale at home, and in a 1916 book entitled ‘The Western Front’.

However, they did not make it past the censor, who judged it as too demoralising in light of the need for new recruits.

Now, Sir Muirhead’s family has provided the images for a new edition of the book.

The sketches include a dying soldier, a crippled tank, and stretcher bearers carrying the wounded from battle.

Sir Muirhead was sent to France during the Battle of the Somme, where thousands of British Army personnel were slaughtered as they attempted to drive back the Germans.

The intelligence and propaganda chiefs, however, told him that his job was to record the war in a manner that would not dissuade young men from enlisting.

“It was more propaganda than recording the reality. It was all about presenting the right image to show our war effort was just, with one eye on recruiting more soldiers,”The Scotsman quoted Tim Barlass, publisher of The Western Front’s new version, as saying.

“He wasn’t to show the true horrors of war, the carnage, and for that reason many of the drawings he did never made it on to the pages of The Western Front. These unseen images show the reality,” he added. (ANI)

Now, ‘Hitler’ Jesse James’ Nazi photo emerges

New York, Apr 1 (ANI): A photo of Sandra Bullock”s love rat hubby Jesse James, posing as Adolf Hitler with a German army cap on his head, raising his arm in the “sieg heil” salute and mimicking the dictator”s mustache with two fingers, has surfaced.

The controversial pic, featured in the new edition of Us Weekly magazine, surfaces amid new report that he took part in a four-way with a guy and two women in a San Diego tattoo parlor in June, according to the new issue of Life & Style.

“[Sandra] should definitely get tested for HIV and STDs — I would,” said Eric McDougall, the tattoo-shop owner and other man in the foursome.

Earlier this month, the Blind Side actress’ apparently perfect five-year marriage was shattered when tattooed stripper Michelle “Bombshell” McGee revealed that she and James had been having a torrid affair, reports The New York Post.

James has now checked himself into a rehab clinic “to deal with personal issues,” his rep told People Magazine. (ANI)

Married couples less likely to split up than cohabiting pairs

London, March 26 (ANI): The Office for National Statistics has revealed that couples who are married are less likely to split up than those who live together.

Analysis of Census results found that four-fifths of spouses who were married in 1991 were still together a decade later, compared with three-fifths of cohabiting couples.

The independent statistics body said older couples and those with children were more likely to stay in the same relationships.

The findings of the ONS are likely to reignite the political debate over whether married couples should be given tax breaks.

The Conservatives have pledged to recognise marriage in the tax system, ensuring that spouses would not lose out if one wanted to stay at home to raise their children, on the grounds that stable families are good for society.

But Labour ministers, who abolished tax breaks for married couples, say that families now come in “all shapes and sizes” and so it would be wrong to disadvantage single parents or widows.

The ONS report, included in a new edition of its regular publication, Population Trends, analysed the information about living arrangements provided by 318,533 adults in its own Longitudinal Study.

Researchers tracked those who answered questions in both the 1991 and 2001 Census then looked in detail to find out whether they remained in the same relationship over the decade.

They found that of those who were cohabiting in 1991, 61 percent were with the same partner 10 years later while 39 percent were not.

Of those who stayed together, most had by then married their partner. The majority whose relationship had ended were living alone.

By contrast, 82 percent of those who were married in 1991 were still with their spouse in 2001. Of the 18 percent who had divorced or been widowed, most were single although a small proportion had remarried.

“It shows that marriage was more stable than cohabitation, even when controlling for a variety of factors,” the Telegraph quoted the ONS as saying.

Detailed models suggested that couples were more likely to split up if they were younger, had no children, had previously split up with partners, were poorly educated or were unemployed.

“The Government persists in saying there”s no difference between marriage and other forms of relationship but these official statistics are telling us, from a completely neutral standpoint, that there is a difference,” Jill Kirby, Director of the Centre for Policy Studies, a think-tank, said.

“Living together is not an equivalent to marriage for family stability. That”s why it”s important to protect and support marriage, in the interests of children,” she stated.

Marriage rates are already at their lowest level since records began in 1862, with just 232,990 weddings taking place in England and Wales during 2008.

But despite the greater instability of cohabitation, the ONS believes even fewer couples are likely to tie the knot in future.

“There have been notable changes in UK partnership behaviour over the last 40 years,” the report said.

“Divorce rates rose considerably during the 1970s, remained broadly stable after the mid-1980s, and more recently have fallen since 2004.

“At the same time, there has been a long-term fall in marriage rates since the beginning of the 1970s, and a steady increase in the proportion of adults cohabiting.

“For unmarried men in Great Britain aged 16 to 59, the proportion cohabiting increased from 11 per cent in 1986 to 27 per cent in 2007.

“There was a similar change for equivalent unmarried women, from 13 per cent to 28 per cent.

“This change in partnership behaviour is likely to persist.

“According to demographic projections, the long-term rise in cohabitation will continue, with the number of cohabiting couples in England and Wales projected to rise from 2.25 million in 2007 to 3.70 million in 2031.

“The same figures show that the proportion of the adult population that is legally married is projected to fall from 49 per cent in 2007 to 41 per cent by 2031,” it concluded. (ANI)

World’s longest running soap comes to an end

London, September 19 (ANI): The world’s longest running soap opera ‘Guiding Light’, spanning seven-decades and 15,700 episodes, has come to an end.

The American TV programme, which started as a 15-minute daily drama on NBC radio in 1937 before moving to television in 1952, was screened for the last time after a decline in the ratings in recent years.

CBS Senior Vice President Barbara Bloom said the show, that bagged dozens of awards including an Emmy, had set new heights with its treatment of social issues such as cancer, alcoholism and teenage pregnancy.

“No show in daytime or prime time, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as Guiding Light,” The BBC quoted Barbara as saying.

The show is reportedly set to be replaced by a new edition of game show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’. (ANI)

Jon Bon Jovi disapproves use of Kurt Cobain’s image in Guitar Hero video game

Washington, Sep 18 (ANI): American singer Jon Bon Jovi has disapproved the use of late Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain’s image in a new edition of Guitar Hero video game.

Jovi, 47, agrees with former Nirvana rockers Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl’s protests of being “dismayed and very disappointed” after learning their bandmate’s likeness can be used to play songs by other artists in Guitar Hero 5.

“I don’t know that I would have wanted it either. To hear someone else’s voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don’t know. It sounds a little forced,” Contactmusic quoted Jovi as saying.

When approached by bosses from game giant Activision to appear alongside Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash in the game, he declined the opportunity.

“I had the paperwork, they wanted me to be on that game and I just passed. But no one even broached the subject with me that I would be singing other people’s stuff,” he said.

“I don’t know how I would have reacted to that. I don’t know that I would have wanted it either,” he added.

Cobain’s widow Courtney Love announced last week she was taking legal action against Activision chiefs, insisting that she would never have agreed to the project if she knew Cobain would be “reincarnated” for renditions of Bon Jovi’s hit. (ANI)

London, September 1 (ANI): Supermodel Kate Moss recently did a gypsy-themed fashion shoot for the new edition of V Magazine.

The beauty may have got a true caravan experience during the shoot, as she lived with a group of travellers for two days at a site in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

She posed on the back of a traditional Romany horse drawn cart and around the campfire, to bring about that gypsy flavor.

But apparently, the eye catcher was when she showed some skin in a nearby field, reports the Sun.

The stunner wore outfits from fashion brands including Kenzo, John Galliano and Stefanel.

The crew including Moss reportedly stayed on the site in a luxury campervan and enjoyed themselves singing and “dancing around the clock”. (ANI)

Washington, June 29 (ANI): A star-studded audience at the BET Awards on Sunday were left stunned, when Janet Jackson paid a tearful tribute to her late brother Michael.

After a ceremony dedicated to the King of Pop, who suddenly passed away on Thursday, the crowd fell silent as Janet went on to the stage and fought back tears as she paid a tribute to Jacko.

Wisden asks ECB to cut cricket to avoid Trescothick type nervous breakdown of players

London, Apr 9 (ANI): To prevent players suffering the sort of nervous breakdown experienced by English opener Marcus Trescothick, Wisden has asked the England and Wales Cricket Board to reduce the amount of cricket being played by the national team.

“The word suffer is used too often in cricket but in his autobiography Trescothick was entitled to use it in describing much of what he endured as an England player,” writes Scyld Berry in his editor’s notes for the new edition of the Wisden Almanack.

“Why do England cricketers spend so much time on the road and at airports? In every Test-playing country the domestic structure has to be subsidised by the international team, but it is a question of degree: the England team generates about 80 per cent of the annual revenue of English cricket, mostly through the broadcasting deal with Sky, and more than half of that income goes to the 18 counties.”

The Telegraph quoted Berry as saying that longer duration of international cricket is enough to drive anyone to distraction, especially as there are not enough games to keep players busy while touring.

The team captains feel the impact intensely: Kevin Pietersen, for instance, admitted that he was exhausted after just six weeks in the job, he adds.

The new Wisden, which is published on Thursday, also calls for county cricket to give up its reliance on the foreign-born cricketers, mostly from the southern hemisphere, who dominate so much of the domestic game. (ANI)

Carrie Underwood apologizes to Matthew McConaughey for sexy boot slip

Washington, Apr 8 (ANI): Carrie Underwood says she was mortified when she made a sexual reference joke to wanting to see Matthew McConaughey’s “boots” in her acceptance speech at Sunday’s American Country Music Awards.

Before presenting Underwood with Entertainer of the Year, McConaughey told the audience how George Strait’s boots once got him “lucky.”

“We’re like, ‘Oh yeah. Say, as I a matter of fact, out in the parking lot, in the trunk of our white Corvette, we have the next year’s new edition white ostrich quill George Strait signed series that he’s gonna wear on tour next year.’ And they got pretty excited about that and said, ‘Well, can we see? Can we see? Can we see?’” McConaughey told the audience.

“And we obliged … Point of the story is, we got lucky that night. Thank you, George,” he added.

As Carrie accepted her trophy from Matthew, she grabbed a few laughs as she remarked, “I don’t know what to say. I got nothin’ … I want to see those boots, Matthew.”

Now, the stunning singer told Fox News: “I’m so embarrassed, I totally embarrassed myself. I just blanked.

“You want to say something eloquent in a moment like that and I embarrassed myself. I’m sorry Matthew, I’m sorry to my family. I’m totally embarrassed.” (ANI)

Ok! magazine dedicates new edition cover to dying Jade Goody

London, March 18 (ANI): The latest issue of Brit magazine OK! has hit the stands featuring a Jade Goody tribute edition, while the terminally ill reality TV star continues her battle with cancer.

The front cover of the celebrity magazine expressed “In Loving Memory” and “Jade Goody 1981-2009″ so the latest “issue will not end up looking out of date,” reports the Telegraph.

The 27-year-old’s rapidly worsening condition left medics to fear she has just few hours to live before cervical cancer ends her days.

The mum-of-two was granted her last wish after doctors allowed her to go home so that she could spend her final days with her beloved sons at her home in Essex.

Her sons, Bobby, 5, and Freddie, 4, recently brought flowers for their cancer-stricken mum in what could be one of their last visits to celebrate an early Mother’s Day.

Meanwhile, her jailbird hubby Jack Tweed and mum Jackie have been by her side as she slips in and out of consciousness. (ANI)

The Twilight Saga smashes Da Vinci Code book sales record

Melbourne, Feb 6 (ANI): ‘The Twilight Saga’ by US author Stephenie Meyer has broken the book sales record which had been set by Dan Brown’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

The four books in Meyer’s series are currently at the top of the bestseller chart, with Breaking Dawn in first place followed by Eclipse, New Moon and Twilight.

Madonna once dated Bobby Brown, claims book

Washington, Jan 10 (ANI): Madonna once secretly dated Bobby Brown, a new book claims.

In Derrick Handspike’s book ‘Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But…’, it has been claimed that no one was immune to former New Edition star’s charms, not even the Material Girl, reports Contactmusic.

A publishing source told the National Enquirer, “It (romance) began when one of Bobby’s bodyguards caught the Material Girl with Bobby in the back of his limo.

“The couple met years before when Madonna was on her way up and served as the opening act for some New Edition shows.

“The book discloses, after both had become well known, Madonna was interested in having a relationship with Bobby.”

It has been alleged that Brown ditched Madonna when he fell for Janet Jackson, and turned to drink when his relationship with the ‘Control’ hitmaker soured. (ANI)
