Singer Susan Boyle seeks duet partner

(Reuters Life!) – Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who shot to fame on a British TV talent show in 2009, is searching for a duet partner to appear on her new album.

“I thought that what I would like more than anything this year is to be able to give something back — to pass on the gift that I had been given,” the 49-year-old said on her website in advance of the announcement on Friday. Her debut album, “I Dreamed a Dream,” shot to number one in more than 20 countries, and, with nine million copies sold worldwide, was one of last year’s biggest hits.

Her follow-up will be called “The Gift.”

The competition, to be run on her official website www.susanboylemusic.com, will be open from July 9-23, and the winner will be announced on July 26.

Boyle has invited entrants to upload videos of themselves singing Christmas carol “Silent Night.”

“There are a lot of people out there who wouldn’t have the confidence or perhaps the means to enter a big competition like ‘Britain’s Got Talent’,” Boyle said of the programme that made her an international star.

“So this might be a lot less daunting for some people as they can record the song in the privacy of their own home. I’m hoping that people who have always wanted to sing will give it a try. I wish you all good luck.”

Boyle’s rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables” in April last year has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times on the YouTube video sharing site.

The church volunteer from a small town in Scotland surprised audiences and the judging panel with the power of her voice, and within days the world’s media was camping outside her modest home and turning her into a household name.

Floods destroy Keith Urban’s musical equipment

Floods destroy Keith Urban’s musical equipment

London, May 7 (ANI): A flood that hit Nashville, Tennessee seems to have destroyed Keith Urban’s guitars and other equipment, and his gear that he kept in the storage facility.

The country singer, who was about to begin work on a new album, was forced to stop after severe storms caused flooding across the city.

“I wish we could talk to each other under better circumstances. I am actually in the studio recording. We were supposed to start yesterday, but we could not get all the trucks in to get all my equipment out of this big storage facility.

“We thought we would leave it a day and hoped the waters would subside, but instead they continued to go up and up.

“At this stage it is possible that I have lost all my equipment, all my road equipment, and all of my guitars and amps, everything. We have to wait and see to what extent the waters came up… but we know it is not good,” The Daily Express quoted the Sweet Thing hitmaker as speaking with CNN anchor Rick Sanchez.

The star is however grateful that he and wife Nicole Kidman survived the disaster that is estimated to have killed 29 people so far.

He adds, “This pales in comparison, people have lost everything… We are certainly financially helping, my wife and I are.”

Other stars Toby Keith and Brad Paisley have also had their equipment damaged by water. (ANI)

MJ”s estate signs one of the biggest recording contracts in history

New York, March 16 (ANI): Michael Jackson”s estate has signed a sweeping contract with Sony following which the record label will have the complete rights to sell the Pop icon”s back catalogue and many of his previously unheard recordings.

The contract, for about 10 recordings through 2017, is expected to rake up nearly 250 million dollars in advances and other payments for Jackson”s estate, while offering a special high royalty rate for sales both inside and outside the US, says sources.

The deal will also enable Sony and the estate to team up for several lucrative licensing arrangements, such as the use of Jackson”s music for movies, TV and stage shows, and memorabilia.

“We think that recordings will always be an important part of the estate…New generations of kids are discovering Michael,” the New York Times quoted John Branca, an entertainment lawyer who is one of the estate”s executors, as saying.

He added: “A lot of the people that went to see ”This Is It” were families.

” ”This Is It” was one of the few films allowed into China. So we think there are growing and untapped markets for Michael”s music.”

The first recording under the new contract is the “This Is It” soundtrack, released in 2009, and Sony is now planning a new album of unreleased recordings for November.

Rob Stringer, chairman of the Columbia/Epic Label Group, a Sony division, said: “It”s not just a record deal.

“We”re not just basing this on how many CDs we sell or how many downloads. There are also audio rights for theater, movies, computer games. I don”t know how an audio soundtrack will be used in 2017, but you”ve got to bet on Michael Jackson in any new platform.” (ANI)

Minogue so lucky in money-making stakes

Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue is raking in record amounts of cash, more than two decades after she had her first hit.

The 41-year-old star earned $6.75 million in the year to April 2009, based on the latest accounts for her Darenote company lodged at Companies House in Britain.

The Mail On Sunday newspaper, which revealed Minogue’s earnings, said most of the money she made during the year came from her 2008-09 world tour, which raked in $4.61 million.

The remainder was generated by record sales and royalties.

Minogue paid herself $1.97 million and left the rest of the money in Darenote.

The singer’s earnings are the highest she has produced throughout her career, amounting to $18,430.15 a day.

“They are very healthy figures for any business,” one financial expert told the newspaper.

“But for a singer who has been around for quite a long time it is incredible to be still earning money at this level.

“There are few pop stars who can sustain themselves at the top for so long.

“This shows that Kylie Minogue is among that select band.”

Minogue is currently putting the finishing touches to a new album which she hopes to release within a few months.
