Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is a poet too

London, July 11 (ANI): There’s more to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe’s creative aspects than just acting, the teenage heartthrob is also a published poet, it has emerged.

Four poems written by the 19-year-old actor have been published in an underground fashion magazine, under the pen name Jacob Gershon.

Radcliffe’s pseudonym- Jacob Gershon- is a combination of his middle name, and the Jewish version of his mother’s maiden name, Gresham.

But the young star disclosed the secret in an interview with the Guardian.

“I didn’t want to publish it under my name. It’s the kind of thing I look back on and just think, ‘Ahhh!’” the Telegraph quoted Radcliffe as saying.

“As an actor, there is room for a certain amount of creativity, but you’re always ultimately going to be saying somebody else’s words.

“I don’t think I’d have the stamina, skill or ability to write a novel, but I’d love to write short stories and poetry, because those are my two passions. There is an art to a short story.

“I love Raymond Carver, and Chekhov – without making myself sound more highbrow than I am! When I don’t write in form and metre, I become unbearably self-indulgent. It’s what Robert Frost said: free verse is like playing tennis with the net down,” he added.

The verses are about infidelity, Pop Idol and Kate Moss’ former boyfriend- singer Pete Doherty.

The collection of his poems was published in November 2007 in Rubbish magazine-an annual publication with a circulation of 3,000, which describes itself as “a playful platform for fashionable people”. (ANI)

Defence Minister to dedicate AWACS in service of nation today

New Delhi, May 28 (ANI): Defence Minister A K Antony will dedicate the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) to the nation on Thursday.

The first of the three Indian Air Force (IAF) AWACS platform landed on Indian soil escorted by the venerable Mig-29 and Jaguar fighters at the IAF’s Jamnagar airbase, on Monday.

The AWACS is a tripartite venture amongst India, Russia and Israel.

The IAF laid down the operational requirements in detail based on which the Israeli ‘Phalcon’ radar was mounted on the Russian IL-76 aircraft equipped with the more powerful PS-90A engines making it more advanced than many such systems.

This is the first of a total of three AWACS that the IAF is slated to receive.

The remaining two are expected to be inducted into the IAF by 2010 and all the AWACS would be based at Agra.

India is one of the few countries to have inducted the AWACS in their Air Forces.

The AWACS is a true ‘force-multiplier’ that gives a quantum jump to the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force.

Known as the Air Force’s ‘Eye in the Sky’, it is capable of detecting intruders over sea and land at large distances.

It has many other capabilities including Electronic and Signal Intelligence gathering.

Once operationalised alongwith the Operational Data Link (ODL), Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and the Air Force Net (AFNET), the IAF would be able to take a definitive step towards Net Centric Operations. (ANI)

Oil hunters started decimating whale populations as early as 1800

Washington, May 25 (ANI): One of several astonishing reconstructions of ocean life in olden days suggests that about the ocean around New Zealand teemed with about 27,000 southern right whales, about 30 times as many as today, before oil hunters started to whaling in the early 1800s.

The researchers set to make a presentation on the reconstruction at a Census of Marine Life conference, which runs from May 26 to 28, say that at about the same time, large pods of blue whales and orcas, blue sharks and thresher sharks darkened the waters off Cornwall, England, herds of harbour porpoise pursued fish upriver, and dolphins regularly played in waters inshore.

Census researchers are using such diverse sources as old ship logs, literary texts, tax accounts, newly translated legal documents and even mounted trophies to piece together images of fish of such sizes, abundance and distribution in ages past that they stagger modern imaginations.

They are also documenting the timelines over which those giant marine life populations declined.

Researchers James Barrett and Jen Harland of Cambridge University, Cluny Johnstone of York University, and Mike Richards of Germany-based Max Planck Institute reckon that a shift from eating locally-caught freshwater to marine fish species occurred around 1000 AD.

Their surmise is said to be consistent with analyses of scientifically-dated fish remains and historical data from England and northwestern Europe showing smaller freshwater fish and fewer species availability in early medieval times, likely caused by increased exploitation and pollution.

Meanwhile, Maria Lucia De Nicolo of the University of Bologna has established that new fishing boats and equipment invented in the 1500s made it possible to venture from coastal to deep sea fishing.

She says that the real revolution in marine fishing happened in the mid-1600s when pairs of boats began dragging a net.

Andy Rosenberg of the University of New Hampshire, a leader of the Census’ History of Marine Animal Population (HMAP) project and chair of the conference, says that new insights allowed by centuries of information are upending modern notions of “natural” marine life sizes, abundance, habitats and vulnerability, and causing authorities to revisit marine baselines.

The researchers believe that these insights may turn out to be useful for policy makers, who plan to use the results as a realistic baseline against which the current and future status of the marine ecosystem can be gauged.

Ian Poiner, Chair of the Census Scientific Steering Committee, says: “The insights emerging from this research of the past provide a new context for contemporary ocean management. nderstanding the magnitude and drivers of change long ago is essential to accurately interpret today’s trends and to make future projections.” (ANI)

West needs to do more for Pak’s displaced persons: Gilani

Lahore, May 25 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has urged the international community and especially the United States and the West to ‘do more’ for his country’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

He also appealed to all people in Pakistan and the rest of the world to generously assist the IDPs, adding that the whole world would benefit once the Swat operation is over.

According to The Nation, he told a news agency that the international community had in the past alleged that certain institutions were not cooperating with the government, but the fact was that the entire nation and all institutions were united in the operation against the extremists and terrorists.

“We are proud of our armed forces and jawans, who have laid down their lives during Swat operation to purge the valley of terrorists and extremists,” Gilani said.

The government was ensuring the registration of IDPs so that they could be conveniently rehabilitated in their original places, he added.

He said only 20 per cent of the IDPs are being housed in camps, while the 80 per cent are living with the relatives at safer places.

He said the IDPs were in need of desert and water coolers, fans, cotton clothes, slippers, mosquito repellent oil, net and coil, drinking water, milk, biscuits and other items, which could provide instant relief.

The Prime Minister also said that he had ordered for providing salaries to government employees, who have been internally displaced. Steps would also be taken to enable the IDPs who own bank accounts in their respective areas, have access to the facility at their temporary residences. (ANI)

Bangalore hosts fashion show by fresh graduates

Bangalore, May 16 (ANI): The graduation of the creative designer students of the Army Institute of Fashion Designing (AIFD) in Bangalore was marked by a gala fashion show.

Several models sashayed down the ramp at this colourful fashion-cum-passing out parade that was aptly titled Design Dapple-2009 and provided an insight of the students’ creative traits.

The models displayed various designs and cuts created by the budding designers on Friday.

One of the graduate-designers Sandhya said that her collection consisted of the garments made out of net so as to give the nursing mothers more freedom to feed her child.

“Basically the garment which I have done is of net. Their function is to make nursing better and discrete for that I have used some slits in the apex and bit of opening to make it loose on the neckline so that they can feed it better,” said Sandhya.

The event highlighted the culmination of design and functionality. (ANI)

Fish that triggers hallucinations netted in Channel

London, May 14 (ANI): An exotic fish, which can trigger LSD-like hallucinations when eaten, has been discovered in UK waters.

The mind-bending species of bream, sarpa salpa, was found many hundreds of miles away from its normal habitat in the English Channel.

Although the fish look tasty, they can cause vivid hallucinations that can last for days, reports The Sun.

The unusual specimen, which is instantly recognisable from the gold stripes running along its body, was caught by fisherman Andy Giles.

The 38-year-old said: “We were trawling for lemon sole but hauled up the net at the end of the day and almost immediately saw this striped fish.

“I had never seen one before so brought it back for experts to have a look at it.

“But now I realise what it was – and the crazy effects it can have – perhaps I should have taken it into town to sell to some clubbers.”

The species is normally found in the balmier waters of the Mediterranean and South Africa but may now be being lured north due to climate change.

James Wright, a senior biologist at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, said: “These are a fairly common fish off Tenerife, Malta and Cyprus but it is very rare to get them this far north.

“It could be a single fish that was shoaling with a different species. But it could be that there are more of them in our waters.” (ANI)

10yr-old investigated by Brit cops for playing football in his garden!

London, May 11 (ANI): A 10-year-old boy landed in trouble with the British police after an elderly neighbour complained about the noise he made while playing football in his own garden.

Cops resorted to an “instant restorative justice session” between the 76-year-old woman and the schoolboy, who was subsequently provided a 26-pound net, the cost of which is to be incurred by the taxpayers.

The approach has evoked serious response from the boy’s neighbours in Blackburn, Lancashire, as well as the community leaders, who insist the “solution” to be nothing less than a waste of people’s money.

“I couldn’t believe it had got this far,” the Telegraph quoted Maureen Bateson, a Labour councillor who applied for the funding for the net on behalf of cops, as saying.

“I just think it’s crazy that children can’t play in their own garden. Kids today have lost a lot of play spaces. You can’t say to a 10-year-old kid he can’t play in his garden,” she added.

Tory councillor Derek Hardman, who was also present at the meeting when the financial backing was agreed upon, said: “My feeling is this is a waste of resources. Where does it stop? Are we going to get people queuing up asking for things for their gardens so they don’t disturb their neighbours? It is ludicrous.”

Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance also said: “This is an absurd waste of time and taxpayers’ money. A 10-year-old boy has a right to kick a football in his back garden, and his neighbours have a right to some peace and quiet.”

Even the pensioner who lodged the complaint had doubts that the measure would put an end to the trouble.

The woman said: “I don’t know how this will fix it. It’s not nice with the noise and my argument is there is a park just across the road. This should have been sorted a long time ago.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council, in their defence, said that the move was apt to “quickly resolve” the matter. (ANI)

London, May 10 (ANI): Rihanna is reportedly devastated and has jetted to Hawaii after photos allegedly showing the singer in the nude were leaked on the net.

The Umbrella hitmaker was claimed to have taken two snaps herself, showing her naked backside in a hotel bathroom mirror.

In one of the other photos, her ex beau Chris Brown appears to be with a pair of pink knickers on his head.

The 21-year-old was said to be still recovering from her alleged beating at the hands of Brown, who is facing felony charges.

She suffered cuts and bruising to her face and alleged bite marks to her arm during the assault, which stunned her fans all over the world.
