Redbox testing higher-priced DVD rentals

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Dollar-rental king Redbox is testing DVD rentals at higher price points at its kiosk locations in five markets.

There’s no guarantee the tests will lead to permanent price boosts nor an indication of how long the tests might last.

Launched in November in Albuquerque, N.M., and expanded in recent weeks, the DVD price tests complement other marketing testing by the Coinstar-owned kiosk chain, including renewed testing of video game rentals. On Wednesday, Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold said trial tests of games at 150 kiosks in Austin could bear fruit despite modest title offerings at present.

“Given that management chose to launch another game test almost a year after doing so in two other cities demonstrates to us they saw something positive in the initial tests,” Wold wrote in a research note.

“We plan to continue the test until we can understand the implications,” a Coinstar spokesman said. “There is no definitive end date.”

Along with the $1.50 test in Albuquerque, price-point tests began in May in Modesto, Calif. ($1.25), San Diego ($1.25), Spokane, Wash. ($1.15) and Miami/West Palm Beach ($1.15).

Redbox also is testing Blu-ray rentals in select markets.

The company’s biggest competitor in the DVD-kiosks niche is NCR-operated Blockbuster Express. On Tuesday, Blockbuster Express announced the rollout of an additional 500 sites operated by two convenience-store chains in the South, bringing its number of nationwide dollar-rental locations to about 7,000.

Redbox operates kiosks in more than 22,000 retail locations nationwide.

A little cooling rain, and maybe more today

New Delhi, June 6 — Light rain on Saturday evening cleared the dust haze and brought much respite to the Capital, which was sizzling at 36.6 degrees Celsius. Despite the rain, the Met department has predicted a hotter Sunday, relieved by cloudy skies and more rain. There was a difference of as much as 10 notches between the maximum temperature (36.6 degrees Celsius) and the minimum at 26 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the weatherman said, adding the maximum temperature on Sunday is predicted to be 38 degrees Celsius. But even as the thunder squall followed by rains brought relief to Delhiites, it was so little that the Met office equipment did not even record it. “There was a trace of light rain after 7.30 pm,” said the Met official. The humidity during the day ranged from 52 per cent (maximum) to 35 per cent (minimum).

Although parts of the capital – particularly south and east Delhi – received only light rain, NCR areas like Faridabad and Noida were luckier, getting heavier showers.

Delhi petrol pumps owners protest VAT hike, observe shutdown

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Petrol pumps in Delhi are observing a 24-hour shutdown in protest against the hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel by the Delhi Government on Friday.

Over 400 petrol pumps in Delhi are said to have downed their shutters.

Pump owners say oil sales have gone down by over 40 percent since the price hike.

“Diesel sales have reduced by 50 percent in June 2008 and have reduced by another 40 percent this year. This has made it unviable to run several petrol pumps. There are 20,000 families dependent on us and its becoming tough to even give out salaries,” said Atul Peshawaria, president, Delhi Petrol Dealers Association.

Peshawaria added that the association has sent repeated representations to the government but to no avail.

“We don”t want to inconvenience the people. But there seems to be no other way out. The government is completely unwilling to listen to us. If the sales have dropped so much, how can the government make more money on taxes?” Peshawaria questioned.

In Haryana, the price of diesel has been cut by Rs 3.88 where as in UP it will be cut by 68 paisa.

A litre of diesel costs Rs 34.75 in Haryana, as against Rs 38.10 in Delhi.

Pump owners said that due to hike in VAT, the motorists are choosing Noida, Faridabad or Guragaon which are under the NCR, to get a fill.

On April 9, the pump owners had called off their strike, following the assurance of Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit that their grievances will be addressed within 15 days.

Meanwhile, autorickshaw unions are also planning an indefinite strike from May 17 demanding to increase in minimum fare. (ANI)

Student’s bodyguard opens fire on ‘slow’ driver

In an example of the growing trigger-happy culture in NCR, three persons, including a Class XII student of a well-known private International Baccalaureate (IB) school, were involved in shooting a man in Gurgaon when he refused to let their car overtake his. The three have been charged with attempt to murder and arrested by the Gurgaon police.

The student, his driver and personal bodyguard -who were riding in a BMW car- forced the driver of an Indica to halt after he refused to give them way, assaulted him and finally the guard shot at him. According to the deputy commissioner of police (East) Jagdish Nagar, the incident occurred around 4.30 p.

m. when the Indica and BMW began to race each other.

The driver of the BMW, R.P. Pandey, repeatedly honked asking for a pass. Finally he overtook the Indica and forced its driver Vikram Singh to stop.

Soon, the class XII student, who is said to be the son of a well-known Delhi-based businessman and his private guard got down from their car and started thrashing the Indica driver. It was during this time, the gunman shot thrice at Singh from his pistol but missed the target, the DCP said.

Singh told police officials the BMW was speeding and the driver was driving very rashly. The DCP said that a criminal case under section 307 had been registered against the trio.

“In addition to this, we have also booked the bodyguard on charges of misuse of firearm under the Indian Arms Act,” Nagar added. The police have also confiscated the BMW car.

Luckily I escaped uninjured.”.

TERI, MoEF celebrate World Forestry Day

New Delhi, Mar 21 (ANI/Business Wire India): The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) celebrated World Forestry Day 2009.

Internationally, the day is celebrated to highlight the importance of forests and its benefits for the society.

Present on the occasion were Vijai Sharma, Secretary MoEF, Padmashri Dr Anil Joshi, M B Lal, ADGF (Wildlife), A K Johari, DIG (RT), and Ranjana Saikia, Fellow TERI.
Speaking on the relevance of conserving our forests, Dr Anil Joshi said, “I appreciate the skit performed by the children that shows the reality of today’s life where pollution is affecting our existence. It is important for us to know the relation of forests with our economy, sustainability and survival. In India, the majority of the population lives in the villages that are nearest to the forest areas. It the past, this community took care of forests as their economy was dependant on it and the forests were sustained. But we now witness that the forests are being wiped off as the village economy is dependant on urban industries. Thus, it is essential to build village economies through decentralisation of science and technology.”

He further added, “Today, we do not take our fundamental resources-air, water, soil and forests into consideration while talking about economic growth as we are moving from ‘need to greed’. This has affected the sustenance of our forests as resources generated from it are exploited. It is time for our younger generation to find new solutions to save the forests and take a new approach where economic growth compliments the environment. “

On this occasion, more than 100 students from non-formal education background from Delhi and NCR participated in the programme.

The aim of the event was to spread environmental awareness among the children of the country focusing on action oriented programme such as skits, competitions etc. It aspires to encourage the youth to use forest resources in a sustainable manner.

The programme provided information on sustainable forest management; protection, production and recreation.

Giving the presidential address, Vijai Sharma, Secretary MoEF said, “I appreciate the step taken by TERI to promulgate the importance of this day. Forests are our major resource centre and we have been misusing them without thinking about its repercussions. Our wildlife is also in danger as forests are shrinking due to our growing needs for more roads, concrete homes, etc. I am happy that children have participated in such large numbers and am confident that they will steer the process of conservation and creating new forest areas.”

The students avidly participated in the skit competition and took a pledge to “Save forests to save life”, discouraging deforestation, which threats human existence. The winners of the skit competition were Prayas-Social Welfare Society followed by Amitasha.

To spread the message further, students have placed sunboards in different communities across Delhi and NCR with the message “Save Forest to Save Life”.

The sunboard has a painting by Kinshuk Jaiswal, Student, St.John’s School, DLW Varanasi. (ANI)

20,000 policemen for a beefed up security on Republic Day in New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan.16 (ANI): About 20,000 security personnel will guard the national capital ahead of the Republic Day celebrations as part of beefed up security measures following Mumbai terror attacks and intelligence inputs about possible strikes.

Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal on Friday said that the security establishment does not want to take any chance ahead of the prestigious event, especially after the Mumbai terror attacks that claimed 170 lives.

“After Mumbai attacks, we are not taking any chances. There are inputs (about possible strikes). We are making tight arrangements for the event,” Dadwal told mediapersons in a new conference here.

Around 20,000 police personnel, including 5,500 from paramilitary forces, and mobile hit teams will be deployed across the city ahead of Republic Day.

As part of the security measures, electronic surveillance will also be increased. It has also been decided to intensify checking at borders and night patrolling. There will be intensive checking not only in New Delhi district but also across the capital, Dadwal said.

“Please, bear with us…the situation is like that. We are vigilant and a lot of steps are being taken. We would like to have the maximum security,” the Commissioner said.

A meet among the heads of police forces in Delhi and adjoining areas have already reviewed the security preparations in the National Capital Region (NCR) and decided to increase sharing of intelligence and information regarding criminals and gangs operating in the region.

Police sources said a massive ground-to-air security apparatus would be organised in the city for the event that is attended by the country’s top political and military leadership.

A multi-layer security ring will also be thrown around Rajpath, where President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will unfurl the tricolour and take the salute of marching contingents.

Mobile hit teams, anti-aircraft guns and sharpshooters of the elite National Security Guards (NSG) will be deployed at various locations while paramilitary and Delhi Police commandos will keep a tight vigil along the route of the parade, sources said.

All police heads in the National Capital Region have been directed to ensure that calls made to any of the Police Control Rooms in the region regarding a crime falling in the jurisdiction of another force should “immediately be shared” with the concerned PCR.

Sub Inspectors from Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are already in New Delhi and surveying the city to gather information about potential trouble-makers, a police official said.

“Deployment of local level officers in the city ahead of the Republic Day celebrations will help in identifying trouble-makers from particular states,” the official said.

The security establishment has already placed a detachment of fighter planes at the Indian Air Force base in Hindon near the Delhi border to provide air-defence.

Police while tightening the security apparatus will install around 100 CCTVs on the route of the parade by this weekend to keep a watch on the movement of people a week ahead of the event.

According to city police’s plans, 22 CCTVs will be placed till 26th January on the 1.5 km Rajpath, where country’s top political and military brass will be present when India showcases its military might. (ANI)
