No new recession, let tax cuts die: Geithner

(Reuters) – The economy is not likely to slip back into recession but letting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans expire is necessary to show commitment to cutting budget deficits, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Sunday.

In appearances on several Sunday talk shows, Geithner said only 2 to 3 percent of Americans — those making $250,000 or more a year — will be affected when tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush end on schedule this year.

Republicans want to extend the tax cuts and Democrats are divided but Geithner said reductions for top earners should end.

“We think that’s the responsible thing to do because we need to make sure we can show the world that (we’re) willing as a country now to start to make some progress bringing down our long-term deficits,” he said on ABC’s “This Week” program.

Geithner played down fears that a slow-paced recovery might slide into a double-dip recession. He told NBC’s “Meet the Press” he did not expect that to happen, although recovery from the deep recession that followed the 2008-2009 financial crisis will be prolonged.

STRENGTHENING, BUT SLOWLY

“I think the most likely thing is you’ll see an economy that gradually strengthens over the next year or two, you’ll see job growth start to come back, investments expanding … but we’ve got a long way to go still,” Geithner said.

The Obama administration has said it wants to keep tax cuts in place for Americans earning less than $250,000 a year. Some Republicans say letting any of the tax cuts expire is effectively a tax hike that may hurt recovery.

Geithner disagreed, saying it was more important to aim tax cuts at lower-earning Americans and businesses.

“Just letting those tax cuts that only go to 2 percent to 3 percent of Americans, the highest-earning Americans in the country, expire I do not believe it will have a negative effect on growth,” he said on ABC.

Geithner said the Obama administration wants Congress to agree on measures to help small businesses, traditionally the main job-creating engine. He said there were signs “critical” private sector hiring was strengthening.

“We want to see it happen at a faster pace but I think most people understand that … this was a deep crisis,” he said. “It’s going to take time to repair that damage, take time to grow out of this.”

He said the overhaul of U.S. financial rules signed into law last week by President Barack Obama should bolster confidence in the economy by giving consumers new protections and the government more powers to restrain bank risk-taking.

Geithner said no reforms can ward off all future crises but can mitigate the harm. If the reforms that are now law, including powers to wind down troubled financial firms, had been in place before the crisis, the damage to jobs and fortunes would have been less, he said.

On NBC, Geithner said there is work ahead to repair the housing finance system that contributed to the crisis and led to putting mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into government conservatorship.

HOUSING REFORM STILL AN ISSUE

“We have to bring to Fannie and Freddie, to the GSEs (government-sponsored enterprises) and to the broader housing finance market a better set of policies to make sure we can deliver affordable financing … without leaving the economy vulnerable to this kind of crisis,” he said.

Geithner said some type of government guarantee to make sure people have the ability to borrow to finance a house even may be necessary but said Fannie and Freddie will not be preserved in their current forms.

“We’re going to have to bring fundamental change to that market but I think there’s going to be a good case for taking a look at preserving or putting in place a carefully designed guarantee so homeowners have the ability borrow … even in a very difficult recession,” he said.

Geithner said it was encouraging China recently ended a peg between its yuan currency and the dollar, which should help correct a trade relationship that enables China to rack up huge surpluses while the United States and others record soaring trade deficits.

“What matters to us and to all of China’s trading partners is that they let that currency appreciate,” he said. “What matters to us is how fast and how far they let it go.”

UPDATE 2-Geithner: No new U.S. recession, let tax cuts die

US’s Geithner says double-dip recession unlikely

July 25 (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Sunday the economy was recovering from a severe recession and he did not expect it to slip back into a downturn.

“The economy is starting to heal again,” he said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, adding in response to a question that he did not foresee a “double dip” recession.

“I think the most likely thing is you’ll see an economy that gradually strengthens over the next year or two, you’ll see job growth start to come back, investments expanding … but we’ve got a long way to go still,” Geithner said.

BP spill fund chief vows to pay claims quickly

June 20 (Reuters) – The independent administrator of the $20 billion fund set up by British energy giant BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) to compensate victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill vowed on Sunday to make sure every eligible claim is quickly paid.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” administrator Kenneth Feinberg also rejected Republican U.S. Representative Joe Barton’s complaint last week that the fund amounts to a government “shakedown” of BP for the worst U.S. oil spill in history.

“I don’t think it helps to politicize this program,” Feinberg added.”

Bolt predicts return in two weeks

(Reuters) – Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt is on the road to recovery from a sore Achilles that kept him off the track for two weeks, the Jamaican said Saturday.

Sports

“So far it’s feeling good and the treatment is working,” Bolt told NBC television in an interview at the New York Diamond League meeting, where he was a spectator.

He had been scheduled to run a 100 meters but pulled out late last month as a precautionary measure after his left Achilles became inflamed.

Wearing a white New York Yankees cap and a long-sleve sweatshirt, Bolt watched fellow Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown run the year’s fastest women’s 200 meters before chatting about his recovery and the upcoming season.

“It is not serious, but my doctor said you have got to take an Achilles injury very seriously so he told me to take a couple of weeks off to make sure I could get better,” Bolt said.

“I’ll be starting back (training) next week.”

EU to decide on Comcast, NBCU deal by July 15

June 11 (Reuters) – EU competition regulators set a July 15 deadline either to clear or prevent U.S. cable provider Comcast’s (CMCSA.O) proposed takeover of NBC Universal, the European Commission said on Friday. The Commission, competition watchdog of the 27-country European Union, may also challenge the deal by seeking concessions but doing so could mean extending the deadline by 35 working days.

The Commission is expected to canvas views from consumers and rivals before deciding whether to clear the transaction.

The U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission are reviewing Comcast’s plan to buy a controlling stake in General Electric’s (GE.N) NBC Universal in a $30 billion joint venture.

Consumer and public interest groups have expressed concerns about possible higher prices for consumers as a result of the deal. (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee, editing by Dale Hudson)

Donald Trump defends risqué Miss USA Pageant photos

New York, May 12 (ANI): Business magnate Donald Trump has come to the defence of the Miss USA Pageant after the organization received flak for a series of risqué photos featuring this year’s contestants.

For their official competition portrait, the 51 women, most of whom are in their early 20s, seductively posed in lacy lingerie while lounging around in bed.

Trump, who owns the Miss Universe organization, voiced his support for the pictures, saying that he has “no problem with it”.

“We are in a different age. They are a little bit sexy but I’ll tell you what – everybody’s watching, so I have no problems with it,” the New York Daily News quoted Trump, 63, as telling the Insider.

“If you look at Miss America, it’s now off network television – and we’re doing better than ever, so I really have no problem with it.

“The Miss USA Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant just got renewed for three years by NBC. The ratings have been terrific,” he added. (ANI)

Miss USA pageant officials face ire for posting racy pics of 2010 contestants

New York, May 10 (ANI): Overtly sexy pictures of Miss USA pageant contestants have ruffled quite a few feathers. Pageant officials are facing a lot of flak for posting these provocative pictures of participants.

According to The New York Daily News, the contestants, all around 20 years of age, have chucked away the traditional ball gown and tiara ensemble and have instead posed in provocative positions and attire, as reported by TMZ.com.

While Miss New York, Davina Reeves, holds shut her unbuttoned pin striped shirt but appears to be wearing nothing underneath, Miss New Jersey poses in nothing but a black lace bra, her nylon hose held up by garter belts.

“You can have brains and be smart and still be sexy,” a representative for Miss USA told TMZ.com.

Miss USA 2010 takes place in Las Vegas next weekend. It will air May 16 at 7 pm on NBC. (ANI)

Man in ‘small penis in scanner’ jibe arrested after bust-up with colleague

New York, May 7 (ANI): A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) worker in Miami was arrested for battery after he attacked a colleague who made fun of his small genitalia revealed by new high-tech security scanners during a recent training session.

Rolando Negrin, 44, was arrested for assault after things took an ugly turn at Miami International Airport when Negrin confronted one of his co-workers in an employee parking lot and hit him with a police baton on the arm and back, as per police reports.

“[Negrin] then told victim to kneel down and say ”your sorry,”” NBC Miami quotes the report. “Victim stated he was in fear and complied with [Negrin].”

“[Negron] stated he could not take the jokes anymore and lost his mind,” the report reads.

Negrin was arrested and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail.

The 170,000-dollar machines, which were introduced last year, took some heat from fliers who were offended by the revealing details of the scanners. (ANI)

Michael Douglas says he has ‘taken blames about being a bad father’

New York, May 3 (ANI): Actor Michael Douglas has in an interview revealed that he has “taken blames about being a bad father”, but is working hard at turning it around.

Douglas, 65, who spoke for the first time since his son Cameron was thrown in jail on drug charges, told NBC “Today’s” Matt Lauer that his parenting ways have changed for kids Dylan, 9, and Carys, 7.

“When I had Cameron I was early in my career and as opposed to most jobs, making movies takes you all around the world, so you were absentee in that sense,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

“My priorities have completely changed. My marriage and my families come certainly before my career,” he added. (ANI)

Prince Charles teams up with NBC for green campaign

Melbourne, April 29 (ANI): Britain’s Prince Charles has teamed up with NBC for ‘Green Is Universal’ campaign.

The Royal will offer up a heart-rending look at his work on climate change in Harmony, a feature-length program to be broadcast during NBC”s Green Week this November, reports News.com.au.

“The Prince of Wales has such a passion and vision in providing leadership on this crucial climate issue that confronts the world,” said Paul Telegdy, executive vice president of alternative programming at NBC.

“We are honored to partner with him to showcase these issues that are important to American audiences.”

In a clip from Harmony, the Prince said that many people never took the issue of climate change seriously and thought it was “pretty crazy” when he initiated the topic twenty-two years ago.

“I can only somehow imagine that I find myself being born into this position for a purpose,” he said.

“We have lost something very precious and that is an understanding of an inter-connectedness with nature. Just as mankind has the power to push the world to the brink, so too does he have the power to restore it,” he added. (ANI)

Pentagon’s Gates: Not inevitable Iran to get bomb

WASHINGTON, April 11 (Reuters) – Iran is not yet “nuclear capable” and the U.S. government has not concluded that it is inevitable that Tehran will get the bomb, Pentagon chief Robert Gates said in remarks aired on Sunday.

“It is our judgment … they are not nuclear capable, not yet,” Gates, the U.S. defense secretary, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Asked if the U.S. government had concluded this was inevitable, Gates said, “No. We have not … drawn that conclusion at all, and in fact we are doing everything we can to try and keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.”

Four killed in US drive-by shooting

Four people have been killed and six others wounded in a mass shooting in one of Washington DC’s poor south-east neighbourhoods, media reports say.

According to witness accounts, the drive-by shooting, one of the capital’s worst bouts of gun violence in 15 years, turned a street into a war zone.

A gunman was “spraying [bullets] into a crowd” gathered outside an apartment block, police chief Cathy Lanier was quoted as saying in the Washington Post.

“All I saw was bodies dropping. It was like Vietnam,” a witness told the daily.

Washington NBC said that an AK47-type weapon was thrown from a fleeing car as police chased suspects through the city.

Chief Lanier later said three people were in custody after the shooting, but no charges had been filed, according to the Post report, adding that four police officers had been injured in the subsequent car chase.

Obama says Afghan’s anti-graft progress ‘too slow’

President Barack Obama, who paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Sunday, said progress there was “too slow” on cracking down on corruption and the drug trade.

In an interview with NBC News, Obama was asked about the anti-corruption message he brought to Afghan President Hamid Karzai during the brief visit.

“I think he is listening, but I think that the progress is too slow and what we’ve been trying to emphasize is the fierce urgency of now,” he said.

Obama’s meeting with Karzai was subdued, reflecting the frosty relations between the two nations. U.S. officials said corruption was among the issues Obama had discussed with Karzai in half an hour of talks.

The U.S. president’s comments in the interview were blunter than his diplomatic approach in Kabul when Obama said he wanted to “continue to make progress on … good governance, rule of law, anti-corruption efforts.”

The day after Obama’s visit, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff was in Kabul and warned Karzai to do more to fight graft or he could ruin the new U.S. strategy in the war.

A perception in the United States that Karzai is tolerant of corruption has sapped support in America for the war.

I know there is somebody great out there for me, says Jennifer Love Hewitt

New York, Mar 24 (ANI): American actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has revealed about the ups and downs of her love life and her hopes of finding Mr. Right.

Hewitt, 31, who split with boyfriend Jamie Kennedy last week, and who has just released her new book “The Day I Shot Cupid: Hello, My Name Is Jennifer Love Hewitt and I’m a Love-aholic”, appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” on March 23.

“I think it takes a lot of frogs to find your prince,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“I don’t think anyone truly enjoys dating.

“I’m better in relationships than I am going out with one guy on a Monday and then another one on a Wednesday and another one on a Saturday. It feels weird to me.

“So, I tend to spend time with people and have boyfriends versus dates,” she said.

Hewitt told USA Today that the timing of her book release and her break-up from Kennedy is “not the ideal situation”, but she has no problems with it.

“I never say in the book that I know how to find perfect love or how to be in the perfect relationship,” she said.

“I’m thrust back into the dating world as the book is coming out, so I feel more than ever that people will know I’m kind of with them in the trenches.

“It’s what life handed me, and I’m OK with it. I know wholeheartedly that I’m a really good partner. I think I’m a really good girlfriend, and I think that I could be a really good wife.

“I know that I love being able to give my love out to someone. I know there is somebody great out there for me,” she added. (ANI)

Hourglass full for Days Of Our Lives

At least one daytime soap is safe for another year. NBC has picked up Days Of Our Lives for its 45th season, keeping the show on the air through 2011.

“Days Of Our Lives continues to be a favourite of the daytime audience and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 45th season,” said Marc Graboff, chairman of NBC Entertainment.

“Days has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively,” he added

The show is NBC’s last remaining soap. It premiered as a half-hour show in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later.

Last year CBS cancelled Guiding Light and As The World Turns after decades on the air.

Tiger could return within weeks: PGA boss

Tiger Woods is expected to let the PGA Tour know soon when he will return to action, Tour commissioner Tim Finchem says.

Media speculation has linked the world number one with a return before or for the US Masters in early April.

“I’m as excited everybody else to see him back, I hope it’s this spring, but my sense is we’ll know pretty soon,” Finchem told NBC television on Sunday (local time).

“All of the speculation (is) about what is going to happen at the end of March, I think if he’s going to play at the end of March or early April.

“We will hear pretty soon because he recognises we need time to do it.”

American Woods is currently on an “indefinite break” from golf following the much publicised scandals surrounding his extra-marital affairs.

Woods spoke to the media last month in Ponte Vedra, Florida and was expected to announce a return date but the 14-times major winner said only that he did “not rule out” coming back this year.

The golfer has been working on his game recently while reports have speculated on whether he will come back in March for a warm-up prior to the US Masters or go straight into the event on April 5.

Finchem said he was glad that the public’s focus had shifted from the details of the scandal towards Woods’ return.

“Everybody is done looking back at the circumstances that resulted in him stepping away from the game and (are) now focused on when he is going to play golf. I think that is good,” he said.

“It is going to be huge when he comes back and then we’ll see how.

“It’s going to be an interesting thing to watch, how he re-enters the game, how he plays, how he deals with the reaction to his statement.

“But I do feel this huge change in the atmosphere because of what he said and I was impressed not only about him talking about personal issues but about him talking about the game.

“I thought he set the bar for himself and we all know what happens when Tiger sets the bar for himself.”
