Tracks clear, first goods train passes

Nearly 50 hours after the Jnaneswari Express was derailed, first goods train passed the accident site at 3.45 on Sunday morning.

“We are keeping the speed of trains which are passing at 15 km per hour. Slowly, the speed will be increased to 100 km per hours — the usual speed of trains — at this spot in the next seven days,” said Dinesh Kumar, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Kharagpur zone, who is overseeing the rescue operations at the accident site.

Kumar said for the next two days, no passenger train would pass from this route owing to the black week called by the Maoists in this area.

While the railway tracks were repaired at 1.50 am and the overhead wire was fixed at 2.30 am, the first train arrived at 3.15 am, but it was allowed to pass only at 3.45 am.

Although the injured and dead have been removed from the site, an uneasy silence prevailed in the area on Sunday afternoon, with a foul smell emanating from the bogies and CRPF personnel encircling the entire area — even the road from NH-6 leading to the accident site.

The mangled S5 and S6 bogies and the scattered belongings of the passengers narrated the horror of the accident as a CID team, headed by Additional Director General Raj Kanojia, visited the site. “The inquiry is being headed by an officer of the rank of Special IG, but we are in our initial stage of investigations,” Kanojia said. “It is a case of sabotage. Planned attacks on the Railways have been going on in this area for quite some time. The railway line was cut and the pandrol clips were opened. But without a forensic report, we cannot say whether there was an explosion or not.”

An investigation into the incident leading to derailment will be conducted by Commissioner, Railway Safety, Sudhayk Nayak from Monday. According to the railway authorities, he will investigate how much damage was caused to the tracks, which led to the derailment. He will also assess the rescue operations and whether there were any lapses on the part of the local railway authorities.

CBI records Buta Singh’s statement in bribery case

New Delhi, Sep 10 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday recorded the statement of Buta Singh, Chairman for the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), in connection with a bribery case involving his son Sarobjit Singh.

A two-member CBI team recorded Buta Singh’s statement at his NCSC office in the Lok Nayak Bhavan in the national capital.

Heavy security arrangements were made at the Lok Nayak Bhavan during the recording of Singh’s statement.

Singh had informed the Delhi High Court on August 31 that he would appear before the CBI only after it clarified that he is required as a witness and not as an accused in the case.

Earlier, Singh, had struck a defiant note saying CBI has no authority to question a constitutional functionary having powers of a civil court, without Central Government’s sanction.

The CBI arrested Sarobjit, on July 31 for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs one crore from a Nashik-based contractor to dispose off an atrocity case against him pending before the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) headed by Buta Singh.

The Lok Nayak Bhavan was declared out of bounds for the public and also to the media till 2 p.m. (ANI)

Maoists’ frequent Bandh calls badly disrupt life in Bastar

Bastar (Chhattisgarh), Sep.1 (ANI): In Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, which is one the most Maoist infested districts of the State, the frequent shutdown calls by Maoists have badly affected people’s daily lives.

One of the worst affected are local train services which make it difficult for people to commute to their workplaces.

Routine Bandhs badly affect the train services, which ultimately troubles hundreds of passengers who commute from Jagdalpur of Bastar to rest of the country.

“I keep travelling for my business purpose and after arriving here I came to know that the train is not coming anymore and might not come for the next two days. Many a times, Maoists issue a threat saying that the train should not move beyond Jagdalpur and we face a lot of difficulty. The bus fares are more expensive than the train,” said Manoj Pandey, one of the stranded passengers.

“Due to the Maoist violence and their frequent calls for shutdown, the common men are affected a lot. In fact recently in Bastar, when the Maoist stopped the movement of vehicles, a man who had fallen ill and had to be taken to Narayanpur for immediate treatment, died,” said P. B. Ramna, an analyst on local issues in Bastar.

Ramna tells the violent activities of Maoists at times have tragic repercussions for the public at large. Like in 2007, the Maoists blasted off High Tension Towers due to which electricity could not be restored for many days here. Such incidents also affect the people seeking medical attention e.g. the life saving drugs cannot be stored as refrigerators cannot work.

He said Maoists often trigger violence to push Government on back foot and demoralise security agencies here.

According to M. R. Nayak, Station-in-charge at Jagdalpur, people are scared of confronting Maoists.

“Whenever there is any Maoist threat, we get orders from our superiors to stop the movement of trains,” said M. R. Nayak, station in-charge, Jagdalpur.ccording to the state finance department one-day shutdown causes a loss of Rs. 2,700 crore to exchequer.

Science museum in Coimbatore seeks to dispel social dogmas

Coimbatore, June 28 (ANI): A unique museum in Coimbatore not only showcases marvels of science and technology, but also dispels superstitious notions with an essence of rationalism.

Usually, there is a regular stream of visitors thronging this museum, named the ‘Methods of Science.

B. Premanand, who is the founder of the Committee for the Investigations of the Paranormal of India, had set up this museum with the help of some like-minded friends and rationalists like Narendra Nayak, who is also the President of Indian Rationalist Association.

Narendra Nayak feels that this museum is totally different from other museums as it disproves almost all the superstitious beliefs.

“This museum is basically different from all the museums that you see. In rest of the museums we emphasise on technology and other things like showing the latest thing in a particular field. This museum emphasises on the methods of science by which we can think, reason out and come to various conclusion about almost everything that happens in our everyday life,” said Narendra Nayak, President, Indian Rationalist Association and co-founder Methods of Science Museum, Coimbatore.

The main focus of this museum is to create a scientific temper amongst the general public and make them realise that science unlike religion is not dogmatic and theories are open for scrutiny.

This museum takes the visitors through 19 sections on various methodologies of science, history of science, the development and the life and achievements of eminent scientists.

Sequential presentations of the methodologies with lucid illustrations make it easy for a layman to imbibe the scientific temper in a single visit in the museum.

“From this museum we come to know how and where we are lacking from the basic things and small matters. We need to change many things about our lifestyle, life cycle and scientific reasons regarding the formation of earth. This method of science museum is very useful for us and one should surely visit the place,” noted Selvi, a visitor. (ANI)

Two top-rung executives of ICICI Bank reportedly putting in their papers

Substantiating the December 2008 reports that some top-rung executives of ICICI Bank may quit after Chanda Kochhar’s appointment as the new CEO and MD, two business chiefs – Renuka Ramnath ICICI Ventures’ Managing Director and CEO; and Shikha Sharma, Managing Director of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance – are likely to put in their papers, sooner than later.

The news of the two executives likely to quit the country’s biggest private-sector banking firm come days ahead of Kochhar taking over the reins of the ICICI Bank from K V Kamath on May 1. Both Ramnath and Sharma were reported to be under consideration as successors to Kamath, who will assume the role of a non-executive chairman.
Though Ramnath officially put off a question by VCCircle about her impending resignation saying “Not yet,” she has communicated her decision to her colleagues and ICICI Bank officials.

According to earlier reports by NDTV Profit, the 48-year old Ramnath – an ICICI veteran, who is referred to as the ‘mother’ of Indian private equity – may set up her own private equity fund after quitting ICICI Bank. It is also possible that she may join Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co, which recently set up India shop.

Meanwhile, Sharma is being considered the most high-profile contender for a top job at Axis Bank, whose current chief PJ Nayak will retire soon.

Delhi CM expresses shock over student’s torture, death

New Delhi, Apr.17 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on Friday expressed shock over the torture and death of a 11-year-old student at the hands of her teacher.I am shocked. This should not have happened. This is just not acceptable. I have spoken to the Education Secretary and MCD Commissioner. We will ensure that this is the last incident of its kind,” a television channel quoted Dixit, as saying on Friday.

Dixit’s reaction came shortly after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against the teacher under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) for the death of 11-year-old Shanno Khan, a class two student of the Delhi Government run ND Primary School.

Shanno died at the Lok Nayak Hospital on Friday more than 24 hours after going into a comatose state following a severe thrashing and torture by her teacher Manju, who is currently absconding.

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) condemned the torture of Shanno Khan.

“This is a sad and barbaric act,” said Sandhya Bajaj, a member of the NCPCR. Bajaj said the commission is extremely concerned and worried about the increasing number of cases of students being tortured by teachers, but added that it could not move on cases like Shanno’s unless it received a detailed inquiry from the concerned law enforcement and municipal authorities.

Union Minister for of State (Independent Charge) for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chowdhury, said: “What a terrible price to pay for this kind of negligence. Why does a child have to die for some action to be taken.”

She said that she has instructed officials of her ministry to maintain a greater vigilance on schools and other educational institutions accused of carrying out such practices.

Aarti Mehra, the Mayor of Delhi, said that she has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the incident and the sacking of the teacher responsible for the death of Shanno.

The child’s parents have taken the child to the Maulana Azad Medical College for a post-mortem. The Delhi Police is yet to register a case against those involved. A report is being forwarded to Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely for further action.

The incident allegedly occurred when Shanno failed to recite the English alphabet in class. Angered by this, the teacher allegedly hit Shanno’s head against the table and made her stand in the sun for over two hours. Unable to stand the heat, Shanno fainted and was found unconscious by her younger sister, who studies in the same school.

The girl then informed their mother, Rihanna, who rushed Shanno to Maharshi Valmiki Hospital. Shanno’s father, Ayub Khan, who works as a waiter in a catering company, was away in Haryana for work.

“Doctors at Maharshi Valmiki hospital told me that Shanno’s condition was critical and she might not survive,” said Khan.

The 11-year-old was subsequently shifted to the paediatric ICU of the Lok Nayak Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

“She was brought to our hospital in a critical condition. We have examined the child and her blood pressure is very low due to which she remains in a state of shock. Her pulse is very weak too. She is on a ventilator and we can comment on her condition only tomorrow,” said Dr. A. P. Dubey, head of the department, paediatrics, Lok Nayak Hospital.

“The child was admitted in with severe seizure and her condition further deteriorated before she slipped into a coma. She was shifted to LNJP in critical condition,” said Dr. K K Deuri, medical superintendent of Maharshi Valmiki hospital. MCD officials, however, denied that the girl was punished and said she suffered from frequent seizures.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi Government and the Centre promised they would take strict action against those involved in the incident.

The Chairman of the MCD Education Committee Prithiviraj Sahni had earlier said, “The girl has been detained for shortage of attendance. She has been irregular with her classes because of fits. On Wednesday too, she had fits, following which her parents were informed.”

Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra has asked the Director of Primary Education to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within three days.

The principal of the school has been identified as Dhanpati, while the teacher has been identified as Manju.

Police said they have confirmed that the child was punished at school. Atul Katiyar, DCP, (Outer), said: “We have confirmed from various sources that the child did face corporal punishment and investigations are on. We will file an FIR only after we receive the medical reports.” (ANI)

Sahu made the provocative speech at a public meeting at Raikia town April 5. He allegedly accused the church of indulging in conversion. He also allegedly claimed that Congress Rajya Sabha MP Radhakanta Nayak was using foreign money to spread Christianity.

The Kandhamal district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread communal violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram on Aug 23, 2008.

At least 38 people were killed in the state and more than 25,000 Christians were forced to flee their homes after their houses were attacked by rampaging mobs. At least 3,170 people are still living in government relief camps.

Sahu, linked to the VHP, had also made similar remarks during the communal violence last year. Christian leaders had immediately refuted the allegations.

While Sahu is contesting the Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat, the BJP has also nominated Manoj Pradhan, an accused in the riots, for the assembly election from G. Udayagiri constituency in the district.

Pradhan was arrested about four months ago and is still in jail.
