Work on gas pipeline to start soon as Pak, Iran complete all formalities

Islamabad, Jun.4 (ANI): Pakistan and Iran have finalised all formalities regarding the gas pipeline, and the ground work on the project would start soon following a survey, Pakistan Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Syed Naveed Qamar Shah has said.

Responding to a question in the National Assembly regarding the progress made on the much publicised pipeline project, Shah said once completed, Pakistan would receive 750 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from Iran, The Daily Times reports.

Shah also informed the house that the project would be of great help to address the massive power shortage in the country, as 5,000 megawatts of electricity is likely to be produced utilising the gas from the pipeline, which has been termed the ‘peace pipeline.’

Out of the total 7.6 billion dollars which would be incurred on the project, Pakistan expects to spend 1.65 billion dollars.

Earlier, the said pipeline was to be extended to India also, but it backed out of the project, as Pakistan refused to forego its demand for a hefty gas transit fee.

The IPI project was conceived in 1995 and after almost 13 years India finally decided to quit the project in 2008. (ANI)

Krishna’s visit to Islamabad would help promote regional peace: Rehman

Peshawar, May 19 (ANI): The proposed visit of External Affairs Minister S M Krishna to Islamabad and talks with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on July 15 would certainly help both countries establish and promote peace in the region, Pakistan National Assembly’s Kashmir Committee chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said.

Interacting with reporters in Swabi, Rehman said meaningful dialogue was in the interest of both neighbouring nations.

“We will welcome Krishna in Pakistan as meaningful dialogues are in the interests of both the neighbours,” The Dawn quoted Rehman, as saying.

Earlier, during his meeting with Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal, Rehman demanded the participation of the Kashmiri leadership in any upcoming India-Pakistan talks.

It is pertinent to mention here that Qureshi has already said that all issues would be discussed with Krishna, and Islamabad would not hesitate to present its stated positions on all issues bedevilling bilateral ties.

He has also made it clear that people should not expect any ‘miracle’ from the upcoming meeting.

“Don’t expect miracles overnight. It is an uphill task. The two foreign secretaries will meet on the sidelines of the SAARC conference to do the ground work for the foreign ministers meeting which will take place on July 15. I will be visiting New Delhi after the Islamabad meeting at a mutually convenient date for the next round of talks,” Qureshi had said earlier. (ANI)

Nankana Sahib residents demand action against criminals by Pak Punjab govt

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): Hundreds of protesters in Nankana Sahib demonstrated outside the Punjab Governor’s residence demanding immediate action against a criminal gang, which has killed about a dozen people in the region.

Angry protestors blocked the road in front of the Governor’s House for several hours with the body of one Muhammed Shafi, who is said to have been killed by the criminal gang.

Later, on the assurance of local Member of National Assembly (MNA) Rana Arshad the mob agreed to end their protest.

Arshad assured the aggrieved family that the provincial government had already announced a head money of 300,000 rupees on the accused and that he would personally pursue the case to ensure that justice is delivered.

Shafi’s close relative Shahid Nawaz told The Daily Times that they have filed several cases against one Sarfaraz Ishtiaq, a noted criminal of the region who is believed to have murdered Shafi, but the police have failed to take any action in this regard. (ANI)

Pak group calls for protection of persecuted Hindu scheduled castes in country

Islamabad, May 18 (ANI): Lending a voice to the long-standing demand of the suppressed Hindu minorities, the Scheduled Caste Rights Movement (SCRM) has urged the government to table a parliamentary legislation in the National Assembly which would ensure the legal protection of fundamental rights of the people belonging to that community.

The SCRM would put forth its demands during a policy forum, which would be held today (May 18) here, during which members of the movement from across the country and other minority leaders would discuss and hold a debate over recommendations for providing legal protection to basic rights of Hindu minorities in Pakistan, The Daily Times reports.

Due to the government’s apathy and faulty policies, scheduled caste Hindus, who form a good part of the population, are unable to obtain National Identity Cards, which denies them an access to other basic rights.

Since partition, the community has been the worst affected in Pakistan, as they have been denied even the basic civil rights. In most parts of the country, local landlords and politicians have illegally occupied religious seminaries, graveyards and land belonging to people of scheduled castes. (ANI)

Pak to approach talks with India with ‘positive’ and ‘constructive’ mindset: Qureshi

Islamabad, May 14 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said his country would approach the dialogue process with India with a ‘positive and ‘constructive’ mindset with a view to address all pending issues, including Kashmir.

Qureshi expressed these views during a joint meeting of the Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs of the Senate and the National Assembly here, The Daily Times reports.

He also briefed diplomats, officials and other present in the meeting about the telephonic conversation that he had with his India counterpart SM Krishna earlier this week, and said that he would stress on resolution of all issues on the basis of equality and mutual respect during the planned talks between the two leaders on July 15.

Qureshi also informed that a meeting of foreign secretaries of the both countries would be held in Islamabad in June to chalk out the agenda for the July 15 talks.

On Tuesday, May 11, Qureshi had a conversation with Krishna over the telephone, and invited him to visit Islamabad for follow up talks after the meeting between the Prime Ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the XVIth South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation in Thimpu last month. PPP senator wants passengers of Benazir’s backup car to be questioned

Islamabad, May 12 (ANI): A senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senator wants investigators to question Law Minister Babar Awan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar and Lt Gen (r) Tauqeer Zia about driving away in a backup car from the site of former premier Benazir Bhutto’s assassination

According to various accounts, no vehicle was available at the site to take Benazir to hospital after the assassin had targeted her, and she had to be driven to hospital in Sherry Rehman’s car with burst tyres.

Senator Yousuf Talpur made this demand during a debate in the National Assembly on the president’s address to a joint sitting of parliament.

A close associate of Benazir, Talpur urged Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to order investigators to ask top party officials who took away the car Benazir was supposed to use in case of an emergency.

Babar Awan, Rehman Malik, Farhatullah Babar and Lt Gen (retired) Tauqeer Zia were in the backup vehicle that was supposed to remain at the site until the bulletproof vehicle Bhutto was travelling in had safely driven away from a public park in Rawalpindi.

Talpur said it was time for investigators to find out what made those in the vehicle drive away the backup car, The Daily Times reports.

He said people in Sindh were waiting for word on who killed their “beloved leader” and why her killers had not been punished. (ANI)

Pak Senators ‘up in arms’ against Clinton’s ‘dire consequences’ diatribe

Islamabad, May 11 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s blunt talking has not gone down well with Pakistani law makers, who have urged the government to ask the Obama Administration to clarify its stand over her statement, that Pakistan may have to face ‘very dire consequences’ if country based terrorists succeeded in attacking America.

Speaking during a discussion in the National Assembly, senators from all the major political parties asked the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led government to adopt a clear policy on Clinton’s statements.

Clinton, during an interview, had warned Pakistan of ‘severe consequences’ if a successful terror attack is traced back to that country.

She had also said that there are people in the Pakistan Government who know the whereabouts of Al Qaeda chieftain Osama bin Laden and Afghan Taliban commander Mullah Omar, but Islamabad has not shared enough evidence regarding that.

“I’m not saying that they’re at the highest levels but I believe that somewhere in this government are people who know where Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda is, where Mullah Omar and the leadership of the Afghan Taliban is and we expect more cooperation to help us bring to justice, capture or kill, those who attacked us on 9/11,” Clinton had said during CBS’ 60 minute.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Zafar Ali Shah demanded an explanation from Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, to which he replied that only the foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was authorised to speak on the issue.

“The foreign minister himself seemed to be publicly defending India by saying it was not violating the Indus Water Treaty. We should face the US by taking a similar stance instead of bowing down to pressures,” Shah shot back.

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) leader Salim Saifullah said Clinton’s words were condemnable, particularly after the recent strategic dialogue between the two countries.

Saifullah said he personally knows Faisal Shahzad’s family, and that the failed New York bombing plot seems to be part of a large conspiracy against Pakistan.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) leader Maulana Haideri termed both the 9/11 and the Times Square incidents as ‘dramas’, which were staged by the US to target Pakistan. (ANI)

I forced India to talk on Kashmir, water and terrorism: Gilani

Islamabad, May 4 (ANI): All those mentions of ‘positive’ and ‘spirited’ talks between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh with his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit in Thimpu seem to be misplaced, as the latter has claimed to have ‘forced’ New Delhi to discuss Kashmir and water sharing issues.

“I forced India to talk on all issues, including Kashmir, water and terrorism,” said Gilani while responding to a point of order raised by the Leader of Opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in the National Assembly.

Gilani said he had taken all political parties and leaders, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PLM-N) chief Nawaz Sharif into confidence over the possibility of a meeting with Dr. Singh during the XVIth SAARC Summit.

Commenting on the probe into former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Gilani vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, saying the killers would not be allowed to go scot free, “whoever they may be”, The Daily Times reports.

“All the culprits will be brought to justice,” Gilani said, adding that the government has also constituted a probe team to investigate washing down of the spot, where Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack on December 27, 2007. (ANI)

Haiti approves key post-quake reconstruction body

Haiti’s parliament has approved the creation of a commission that will allow foreign donors to participate in deciding how to rebuild the poor Caribbean nation after its devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.

The bill approving the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, which was set up by an international donors conference on March 31, was passed by the Haitian Senate late on Thursday after the national assembly’s lower house had also endorsed it.

The assembly also extended a post-quake state of emergency for 18 months, corresponding to the commission’s tenure.

The joint commission, to be co-chaired by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the U.N. special envoy for Haiti, and by Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, will determine which reconstruction projects will receive backing from multibillion-dollar funding pledged by foreign donors.

President Rene Preval is due to sign the bill into law and the president will have final veto over rebuilding projects.

Even before the catastrophic quake, which shattered the fragile and impoverished Haitian economy and killed more than 300,000 people, Haiti had a reputation for high levels of government corruption. Donors had called for guarantees of oversight and accountability in the rebuilding process.

Sitting on the commission, under the joint chair, will be an equal number of Haitian and non-Haitian representatives. The latter include officials of international organizations, multilateral lenders and major donors.

The body will operate for 18 months before handing over to a government redevelopment authority.

Thirteen senators voted for the bill, one voted against, and two abstained, but in preceding debates, Preval’s administration had to overcome arguments from some lawmakers who said the quake-hit nation was ceding sovereignty by agreeing to a foreign donor role in decision-making.

“I could not vote this law because it is against the country’s constitution and it violates our sovereignty,” said Senator Youri Latortue, who refused to back the bill.

Rejecting these fears, Preval told Haitians the operation of the commission would facilitate the release of massive reconstruction financing that will be administered through a Multi-Donor Trust Fund, to be supervised by the World Bank.

“Do we lose our sovereignty because of the creation of this commission? I think the answer is no,” Preval said recently.

MANY HAITIANS MISTRUST GOVERNMENT

At the March 31 donors’ conference in New York, foreign governments, multilateral institutions and non-governmental organizations from around the world pledged a total of $9.9 billion for Haiti’s reconstruction, $5.3 billion for the next two years alone.

The emergency measures accompanying the creation of the recovery commission authorize the Haitian government to use funds and take other measures needed for reconstruction without prior approval by parliament, and also allow it to avoid some legal and constitutional constraints.

Many Haitians have criticized what they say was the Preval government’s slow and ineffective response to the natural disaster. A poll funded last month by the international charity Oxfam showed that only 6.6 percent of Haitians believed their government alone should be left to rebuild the country.

But government supporters said the commission would help to get the reconstruction underway quicker. “We want this law to take effect as soon as possible so the population may see the concrete results of commitments made by the government and the international community,” Senator Joseph Lambert said.

International aid workers are striving to care for more than 1 million homeless Haitian quake survivors who are camped out in makeshift tent and shelter communities sprawled across the wrecked capital and in other damaged towns.

Aid workers say that unless safer, more secure shelter is found for the hundreds of thousands of homeless quake victims, the imminent rains, and the hurricane season starting on June 1, could cause another humanitarian catastrophe.

Venezuela TV boss briefly held for Chavez criticism

Police briefly detained the head of Venezuela’s main pro-opposition TV station at an airport on Thursday for his criticism of President Hugo Chavez’s government during an international media forum.

The move against Guillermo Zuloaga, president of Globovision network, followed the arrest of an opposition politician earlier this week and is likely to fuel accusations that the Chavez government is increasingly stifling dissent.

Venezuela’s socialist leader says he will not tolerate illegal incitement in the media or on the Internet, and accuses opponents of an increasingly desperate campaign against him in the run-up to a legislative election in September.

Zuloaga was picked up at Punto Fijo in western Venezuela where he said he was about to fly in his private jet to the Caribbean island of Bonaire.

Police flew him instead to Caracas, where he was freed after questioning and slapped with a prohibition on traveling during a probe into his remarks. “I was not fleeing the country,” he told reporters after his release.

Zuloaga, whose network has a history of disputes with Chavez, told a recent Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) meeting in Aruba that Chavez was restricting civil rights.

“You cannot talk about freedom of expression in a country when the government uses force to close media,” he said, according to a version of his comments carried by state media.

“President Chavez won elections and has legitimacy in his origins, but he has focused on being the president of one group of Venezuelans and trying to divide citizens.”

OFFENDING CHAVEZ

The National Assembly, which is dominated by Chavez supporters, had called this week for Zuloaga to be investigated for making “false and serious” accusations against Chavez that the lawmakers said had damaged the government’s reputation.

Attorney-General Luisa Ortega Diaz said he was being investigated for possible offenses of giving false information and offending the president.

The first charge carries a jail term of between three and five years. The second has a sentence of between three and fifteen months.

“In Venezuela, nobody is pursued unless they have committed a crime,” Ortega told local media.

Last year, Zuloaga’s home was searched and cars stored there were confiscated when authorities accused him of price speculation. He was also accused of breaking wildlife laws by having illegal stuffed animals. Those cases were later dropped.

Zuloaga’s TV station takes an aggressive, anti-government stance in its news-heavy programming. But it struggles for ratings among Venezuelans who tend to prefer the frothy soaps and lifestyle shows that crowd the airwaves.

The move against Zuloaga came three days after the jailing of a former state governor and presidential candidate, Oswaldo Alvarez Paz, who had accused the government of links to subversive groups in a Globovision interview.

The opposition politician’s detention on charges of conspiracy, spreading false information and inciting hate brought a torrent of protests, including from Venezuela’s opposition parties and Washington.

Alvarez and Zuloaga join a list of several dozen Chavez opponents now in jail, living in exile or facing probes in the South American oil-exporting country.

While foes say Chavez is turning Venezuela into a socialist dictatorship, supporters argue their president is a victim of propaganda and a U.S.-led campaign of vilification.

For them, he is taking on Venezuela’s traditional elite and reversing decades of exploitation in the OPEC member nation through policies for the poor, like free clinics and schools.

Chavez’s traditionally high popularity has suffered this year, as Venezuelans endure a recession and the impact of a severe electricity crisis. But while the opposition senses an opportunity to hurt him at the vote in September, most analysts expect Chavez to retain his majority.

Put ex-PCB boss Naseem Ashraf’s name on ECL: Pak parliamentary committee

Karachi, Mar.23 (ANI): A Pakistan parliamentary committee has recommended putting former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Naseem Ashraf’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL), as he is facing charges of mismanagement of millions of rupees.

An audit report had revealed financial irregularities in the board’s accounts amounting to a whopping 500 million rupees during 2003 to 2008, the period during which Ashraf headed the PCB.

Commenting on the massive embezzlement of funds in the board, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said the board has handed over the issue to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), and would accept whatever decision it takes.

“The AG”s report is an eye-opener and obviously it talks about lot of money so we have left the matter in the hands of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC),” The Dawn quoted Butt, as saying.

The audit report said that the PCB, which has long been crying over its sagging financial accounts, paid an additional bonus of 90 million rupees to its employees during the said period against the board’s laws.

It also pointed out that Shafqat Naghmi was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the board bypassing the formal channels, and that the National Assembly was kept in the dark about his appointment.

Naghmi was paid 10.07 million rupees as salary and other benefits during his tenure, the report said.

It further disclosed that eight senior officials were paid 10.28 million rupees ‘illegally’ during the ICC Champions Trophy in 2008. (ANI)

Audit reports unearths massive 500 m rupee financial scam in PCB

Islamabad, Mar.20 (ANI): An audit report of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed massive financial irregularities in the board amounting to over 500 million rupees.

According to a report of the Auditor General, the PCB incurred huge losses of over 500 million rupees from 2003 to 2008 during the period when Shahrayar Mohammad Khan and Dr Nasim Ashraf headed the board.

The report said that the PCB, which has long been crying over its sagging financial accounts, paid an additional bonus of 90 million rupees to its employees during the said period against the board’s laws.

It also pointed out that Shafqat Naghmi was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the board bypassing the formal channels, and that the National Assembly was kept in the dark about his appointment.

Naghmi was paid 10.07 million rupees as salary and other benefits during his tenure, The Daily Times quoted the audit report, as revealing.

The audit report further disclosed that eight senior officials were paid 10.28 million rupees ‘illegally’ during the ICC Champions Trophy in 2008. (ANI)

Lahore, Mar.17 (ANI): Pakistan and Iran have inked a deal on the gas pipeline project in Istanbul, Turkey.

Lahore, Mar.17 (ANI): Backing all-rounder Shahid Afridi for the captain’s post, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Lieutenant General (retired) Tauqir Zia has criticised the National Assembly’s Sports Committee for making the match-fixing issue public.

Zia said the committee should not have made the matter public without naming the players involved in match-fixing.

It may be noted that PCB had announced a 15-man squad for the forthcoming ICC World T20 Championship in West Indies last week, but did not name the skipper for the tournament.

While Afridi is believed to be leading the race for captaincy, veteran players such as all rounder Abdul Razzaq and middle-order batsman Misbah-ul-Haq are also said to be in the fray.

Insiders said opener Salman Butt is also being considered for the top job. (ANI)

Pak cricketers’ financial assets to be scrutinised following match fixing allegations

Islamabad, Mar. 8 (ANI): Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has decided to scrutinize the financial assets of Pakistani cricketers in the wake of match fixing allegation.

“We are very much concerned over the continuous criticism from different circles over match fixing and have directed PML (N) legislator Saud Majeed, chairman sub-committee, to probe into these allegations. The sub-committee will also scrutinize the financial strength of the players besides verifying their tax returns,” The Dawn NA committee chief Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, as saying

However, PCB chief Ijaz Butt informed the NA committee that the players who were involved in match-fixing were not from the current squad.

“The match fixing allegations are totally baseless and the current tour of the squad to Australia was not tainted by match fixing at all,” Butt said.

He claimed that that former cricketers Saleem Malik and Ataur Rehman were in fact responsible for match fixing.

The NA committee also gave a deadline of March 11 to the Punjab government for bring responsible police officers to book who displayed slackness during their duty on March 3, 2009 when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by terrorists in Lahore. (ANI)

PML-N demands Zardari to make secret deal with Musharraf public

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has demanded President Asif Ali Zardari to make public the documents regarding the secret deal with his predecessor General Pervez Musharraf, allowing him a safe exit from the country.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the PML-N would move motions in the Senate and the NA against Zardari for making a covert deal with Musharraf.

“It’s a mind-boggling statement… we demand that Zardari make the details of this deal public. Zardari should disclose the ‘international stakeholders’ involved in brokering the deal seeking indemnity for General Pervez Musharraf. The nation should be told who agreed to give the former military dictator safe passage,” Khan said.

Interacting with media persons at Parliament House here, Khan said Zardari’s disclosure that he too was a part of the agreement is a “serious breach of the country’s sovereignty, independence and self-respect”.

“While all this ‘political wheeling and dealing’ was going on, Zardari had not yet become president, which showed that he became the president with the support of international actors under the same deal,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

Shocked by Zardari’s disclosure, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said the President should have taken his party into confidence as a coalition partner before making such statements.

Responding to a question, Sharif said if Zardari had consulted him before revealing the deal, he would have then “tried to guide him in the right direction and would have reminded him of the treatment meted out to the country, democracy and even to his party and its leadership”.

Sharif questioned Zardari’s involvement in the deal, asking under what capacity he became a party in the agreement as he had not assumed the charge of President then.

“Popular leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in the tenure of Pervez Musharraf, then how Asif Zardari became party in giving safe passage to Musharraf,” Sharif asked. (ANI)

IAAF in a fix as tests prove Semenya is a hermaphrodite

Melbourne, Sep 11 (ANI): The International Association of Athletics Federations is likely to strip champion runner Caster Semenya of the gold medal she won in Berlin last month, as a test has shown that she is a hermaphrodite – a person with both female and male sexual characteristics.

The tests, not yet publicly released, show the 18-year-old has no womb or ovaries.

The IAAF is expected to disqualify the South African from future events and advise her to have surgery because her condition carries grave health risks, The Daily Telegraph reports.

And she could be stripped of the gold medal she won in Berlin in last month, as she has three times more testosterone than a normal female.

A source closely involved with the IAAF tests said Semenya had internal testes — the male sexual organs, which produce testosterone.

“There certainly is evidence Semenya is a hermaphrodite. But the trouble is the IAAF now has the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs. Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book, no question of a challenge to the findings,” the source said.

It is believed that Semenya is unaware the tests has identified her as a hermaphrodite.

Only the certainty of a backlash from South Africa has so far prevented the IAAF from banning Semenya and revoking her gold medal.

South Africa embraced the feisty teenager after the storm of controversy from Berlin, declaring her “Our girl”.

African National Congress MP and National Assembly sports committee chairman Butana Komphela has already lodged a complaint with the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, accusing the IAAF of racism and sexism.

The IAAF expects to receive the full set of results this week. (ANI)

Pak Govt says it is watching illegal madrassas closely

Islamabad, Sep. 9 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior that it is monitoring the activities of illegal madrassas in Islamabad.

While responding to concerns expressed by the legislators over unregistered madrassas, Chief Commissioner Fazeel Asghar said there were 140 seminaries in the city, out of which 122 were registered.

The Daily Times quoted him, as saying that the rest were operating illegally and the government was trying to get them registered soon.

The members had expressed fears that a Lal Masjid-like situation may arise if the government doesn’t take action soon.

The members, including former interior minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, said it was a matter of great concern that 18 seminaries were still operating ‘illegally’ despite the government’s orders making registration mandatory. (ANI)

We will oppose any action against Musharraf : PML-Q

London, Sep.8 (ANI): Lending its full support to former President General Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid) PML-Q has decided to oppose any action against the former general under Article-Six of the Constitution.

According to The Dawn, the Chaudhry brothers have sent a message to Musharraf through their messenger that they will stand by him in all circumstances.

Sources said Ameer Muqaam and Khusro Bakhtiar, who are considered Musharraf’s close aides, met the former president in London recently and discussed various issues regarding Pakistan’s political scenario.

“Amir Muqaam gave a clear message to the former president that no action will be taken against him at any forum including Parliament,” Dawn quoted sources, as saying.

Sources said Musharraf is in constant touch with the leaders of PML-Q’s ‘like minded group’ and is holding meetings with them from time to time to get the first hand information regarding proceedings being initiated against him by different political quarters, particularly the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Meanwhile, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) stance on Musharraf’s trial was clear.

Kaira said if the PML-N wants to table a resolution in the National Assembly for Musharraf’s high treason trial, then it is free do so as it was within its right.

He said the PML-N has a right to demand Musharraf’s trial.

He, however, said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the PPP has time and again expressed its views over the trial debate and they are firm on their stand.

“The PPP has to take along its allied parties. We have to take their viewpoints into account also,” Kaira said. (ANI)

Pak Govt asked to review blasphemy law

Islamabad, Sep. 2 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has been asked by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights to re-examine the blasphemy law so that incidents like Gojra’s anti-Christian riot can be prevented.

Human Rights Ministry Secretary Farid Khan told Committee chairman PML-Q member Riaz Fatiyana that the Gojra incident reflected “a complete failure of our system.”

The Daily Times quoted Punjab Human Rights Minister Kamran Michael as saying that the government should review the blasphemy law.

He said the law should also be used against those who levelled baseless allegations against others.

PML-N leader Javed Hashmi seconded Michael’s views, and said he regretted that people were languishing in jails for the last eight to ten years under the blasphemy law.

Fatiyana said the killings were a failure on the part of administration and intelligence agencies. He urged the government to take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

He added that the committee will meet Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and request him to fix a time period for trial of people arrested under blasphemy law.

Pakistan’s blasphemy law forbids-damaging a place of worship or a sacred object, outraging religious feelings, defiling the Quran and defaming Prophet Mohammed.

The Criminal Code provides penalties for blasphemy up to death and a fine.

Critics have pointed out that the blasphemy law is being used to victimise minorities. (ANI)

Former IB chief claims operation ‘Midnight Jackal’ launched to dislodge Benazir Govt.

Lahore, Aug.28 (ANI): Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz has said that the ‘Operation Midnight Jackal’ was targeted at dislodging the Benazir Bhutto government.

In an interview with a private television channel, Brigadier Imtiaz disclosed that the then Army Chief General Aslam Beg had hatched the conspiracy to destabilize the Bhutto government, as he believed that its policies were contrary to those of the Army.

He claimed that the day Bhutto assumed charge, General Beg and the then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan started discussing the possibility of replacing her.

Imtiaz said his failure to refuse to obey General Beg’s orders led to his retirement from the Armed Forces.

The Daily Times quoted him, as saying that President Ghulam Ishaq had offered him to join his ‘gang’ and offered him privileges.

When asked that why he maintained silence over the conspiracy despite knowing so much, Imtiaz said he did not wanted to defame his institution.

Brigadier Imtiaz along with Former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) operative Major Amir had allegedly conspired with other political leaders to bring down the first Benazir Bhutto government in 1989.

Both the ISI operatives had launched an operation ‘Midnight Jackal’ to make the then PPP Members of National Assembly (MNA) support a no-confidence motion against their own prime minister (Benazir Bhutto).

The then Director-General of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau, Masood Sharif Khattak has also said that both Major Amir and Brigadier Imtiaz were caught on videotapes persuading PPP MNA’s to topple the government. (ANI)
