Church of Scientology Set to Open Renovated LEED-EB Church Buildings

The Church of Scientology, which has been buying and refurbishing historic buildings around the world, plans to open later this summer its first LEED-certified center.

The Pasadena church is a renovation of a turn-of-the-century bicycle factory, retaining the original structure’s four-story atrium and facade while building in modern features and energy efficiency.

The Pasadena facility is part of a larger program launched in 2004 by the Church of Scientology to expand its facilities around the world. Of the 19 new churches opened since 2004, eight of them have been in unique historical buildings. From a press release announcing the Pasadena church:

In May the Nashville, Tennessee Church of Scientology historic building took top honors in the city’s 35th Annual Preservation Awards for meeting all safety standards while preserving the beauty and grace of the 1898 building, which opened last year. Built just two years after the famous Grand Ole Opry in a similar style, its features include red brick walls, original doors and hardwood floors, 14-foot ceilings and an unusual three-floor atrium crowned with a glass cupola.

Last January, the Church opened the Belgium branch of the Churches of Scientology of Europe, an 88,000 square-foot early 20th century historic structure in the heart of Brussels (pictured below). In October 2009, the Founding Church of Scientology in Washington, DC completed renovation of its seven-story, 49,000-square-foot historic building by architect Appleton P. Clark, Jr., half a mile from the White House. And another historic Church property fully restored in 2009 is the 1926 Mediterranean Revival-style Fort Harrison building in Clearwater, Florida.

Other cities where the church is planning historic renovations include Detroit, Chicago, Boston, Montreal and Manchester, England.

Scientology’s interest in green building is far from unique: In recent months there have been similar announcements from a number of faiths. In April, a Benedictine monastery in Wisconsin and a Mormon meeting house in Utah earned LEED certification for green building practices, while last fall the U.S. Environmental protection agency published an Energy Star toolkit for houses of worship, aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the more than 370,000 religious facilities in the U.S. And as far back as 2005, Eric Corey Freed offered a rundown of the greenest churches in the land.

Floods destroy Keith Urban’s musical equipment

Floods destroy Keith Urban’s musical equipment

London, May 7 (ANI): A flood that hit Nashville, Tennessee seems to have destroyed Keith Urban’s guitars and other equipment, and his gear that he kept in the storage facility.

The country singer, who was about to begin work on a new album, was forced to stop after severe storms caused flooding across the city.

“I wish we could talk to each other under better circumstances. I am actually in the studio recording. We were supposed to start yesterday, but we could not get all the trucks in to get all my equipment out of this big storage facility.

“We thought we would leave it a day and hoped the waters would subside, but instead they continued to go up and up.

“At this stage it is possible that I have lost all my equipment, all my road equipment, and all of my guitars and amps, everything. We have to wait and see to what extent the waters came up… but we know it is not good,” The Daily Express quoted the Sweet Thing hitmaker as speaking with CNN anchor Rick Sanchez.

The star is however grateful that he and wife Nicole Kidman survived the disaster that is estimated to have killed 29 people so far.

He adds, “This pales in comparison, people have lost everything… We are certainly financially helping, my wife and I are.”

Other stars Toby Keith and Brad Paisley have also had their equipment damaged by water. (ANI)

Blood test could identify lung cancer patients likely to respond to drug erlotinib

Washington, May 4 (ANI): A simple blood test could identify lung cancer patients who will respond positively to the drug erlotinib, reveals a new study.

The researchers found that testing for the presence of specific cancer protein ”fingerprints” in the blood of lung cancer patients may be a useful means of identifying a subgroup whose tumours are more likely to shrink when treated with erlotinib, especially when other testing methods are unavailable.

Erlotinib is one of a class of drugs that specifically inhibits an important cell-surface molecule known as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is highly expressed in some forms of cancer, including lung cancer.

By blocking this receptor, drugs such as erlotinib aim to slow tumour growth and proliferation.

Prof David Carbone from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and Canadian colleagues analysed blood samples from the NCIC Clinical Trials Group (NCIC CTG) BR.21 study.

The study had shown that erlotinib improved survival compared to placebo in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer who had already tried one or two other drugs.

In the new study, the researchers analysed blood samples that had been taken from some patients before they started treatment in the BR.21 study.

They performed this analysis on patients who received the drug and on patients who received the placebo, looking for specific proteomic profiles already known to predict outcomes in patients treated with EGFR-blockers.

“The bottom line is that the proteomic test-comparing ”good” and ”poor” profiles-was strongly prognostic in both erlotinib and placebo arms. Proteomics ”good” patients also had a significantly higher response rate than proteomics ”poor” patients,” said Carbone.

Carbone has noted that there are other methods available to analyse the EGFR pathway of lung cancers, including sequencing of the EGFR gene, or a technique known as fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) to assess EGFR gene copy number, in which tumour tissue samples are directly studied under a microscope.

“FISH overall was a better predictor of benefit, but can only be done with adequate biopsy tissue, which was available in this study only in 22pct of patients. With the serum test, 99pct of patients had a successful determination of proteomic status,” said Carbone.

“Thus, I think this test may be of potential value in identifying a subgroup of patients with a good prognosis and who are likely to have response to erlotinib; it may be of particular value for those in whom tumor tissue is inadequate or unavailable,” added Carbone.

The study was presented at the 2nd European Lung Cancer Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. (ANI)

Dutch semiconductor company NXP, which was spun off from Philips Electronics (PHG.AS) in 2006, is planning to raise more than $1 billion through an IPO, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation.

KKR and Bain could partially cash out their stakes and return money to investors, or use the proceeds to pay down the sizable debt used to finance the takeovers, the Journal said.

The IPOs are expected to be priced in the coming months provided stock markets remain stable, the paper said.

Private equity firms have been taking advantage of improved stock market conditions to take investments public after a long drought.

The two firms have also planned an initial public offering of hospital chain HCA Inc that could be worth up to $4.5 billion, CNBC reported on Thursday. [ID:nN08202131]

Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA could file as soon as mid-May and debut in mid-July, CNBC said.

Drug improves health-related quality of life in nerve disease patients

Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): A new study has found that long-term treatment with Gamunex can significantly improve health-related quality of life in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).

CIDP is a debilitating nerve disease that results in progressive weakness in the arms and legs, causing significant disability for many individuals.

Gamunex is the first and only FDA-approved product for the treatment of CIDP.

The researchers showed that patients who received Gamunex experienced greater improvements in physical and mental component scores compared with placebo.

“The data provide the rationale for administering maintenance doses of Gamunex every three weeks as a means of improving health-related quality of life and preventing relapse of symptoms,” said Dr Ingemar Merkie, Department of Neurology, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam and Spaarne Hospital Hoofddorp, the Netherlands.

“Until now, there has been no FDA-approved dosing regimen for an effective course of intravenous immune globulin therapy to reduce neuromuscular disability and improve quality of life in patients with CIDP.

“Data from this trial provide an effective regimen with Gamunex to achieve improvements,” Merkie added.

“The improvement in health-related quality of life, social participation and activity supports the use of Gamunex in patients with CIDP who have responded to it in the past. It validates the benefits of every three week infusions of Gamunex,” said Dr. Peter Donofrio, professor of Neurology and Chief, Neuromuscular Section of the Department of Neurology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Two dead, dozens injured in Tennessee tornadoes

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) – Two people were killed and dozens more injured on Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, when a series of tornadoes ripped through the state, causing extensive property damage in several communities.

Police said the bodies of a mother and her 9-week-old baby were found outside their badly damaged home.

The hardest hit area was a residential section near this college town located about 35 miles southeast of Nashville, where search and rescue work was continuing into the night.

“At least 35 people were hospitalized and I am told that seven are in critical condition,” Tennessee Emergency Management Agency director Donnie Smith said.

Officials estimated at least three dozen homes were destroyed in Murfreesboro, The Knoxville News Sentinel said on its website.

Smith said twisters also raked Camden, a town in nearby Benton County, but so far no fatalities had been reported. Property damage was also reported in Sumner County.

The storm blew into Tennessee on a southwest to northeast path, he said, sending residents in dozens of towns seeking refuge.

“We’ll be working all night along with the Red Cross, police, fire department people, electric service personnel and just about everybody in the area,” Smith said.

Liquorice may help beat bowel cancer

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Liquorice, a confectionery flavoured with the extract of the roots of the liquorice plant, may help prevent bowel cancer, a new study has found.

Bowel cancer is the third most common type after breast and lung cancers.

In the study, which was carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville, Tennessee, scientists targeted an enzyme that is thought to play a crucial role in bowel cancer growth.

“We found that a chemical component of liquorice may offer a new approach to preventing it, without the adverse side effects of other preventative therapies,” The Mirror quoted team leader Dr Raymond Harris, as saying.

With the help of glycyrrhizic acid – the main sweet-tasting component of liquorice -researchers blocked the enzyme in mice predisposed to the disease.

They found that this prevented the development of polyps and stopped the progression of cancer.

Liquorice, extracted from the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant from southern Europe and Asia, has been important in Chinese medicine for centuries.

Compounds derived from its root have been shown to fight inflammation, viruses, ulcers, dental decay, eczema and liver cancer.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. (ANI)
