Brother’s book raises questions on Pramod Mahajan’s character

Mumbai, Apr 12 (ANI): Pravin Mahajan, who is undergoing life imprisonment for murdering his brother and late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, has made serious allegations about Mahajan’s character in his book.

The 75-pages book, ‘My Album’, purported excepts of which were published in a leading Marathi daily on Sunday, will be published in Marathi and English soon.

In his book, Pravin alleged that Pramod had extra-marital affair and his wife, Rekha, had even thought of a divorce.

“Pramod Mahajan was not the person he looked like. He had developed the image of a fixer. He did not respect anyone. His lifestyle did not go well with us. He had affairs with several women. His wife Rekha had even thought of a divorce,” Pravin claimed.

Pravin termed Pramod a person with dual personality.

“Pramod supported the Mahajan family after the death of our father in 1971. Pramod was both a hero and a villain,” he added.

Pravin has also stated that Pramod used to term Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani’s speeches as ‘boring’.

Pravin, who is currently lodged in the Nashik Central Jail, compared Pramod with Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Sigh.

“He symbolized everything in politics. He was a fixer, dealer, double-dealer, conspirator, etc, just like Amar Singh,” he has written.

Pravin also claimed that Pramod used his party’s money for personal pleasure pursuits.

Meanwhile, Prakash Mahajan, brother of Pravin and Pramod, refused all allegations made against Pramod.

“Facts given in the book are a bundle of lies. The book is baseless,” Prakash said.

Prakash also questioned that why these questions were being used at the time of elections. (ANI)

Pawar bows to Cong, skips Orissa rally

MUMBAI/BHUBANESWAR/NEW DELHI: NCP boss Sharad Pawar appears to have mastered the art of starting with a bang only to end with a whimper. The Maratha
warlord on Friday chickened out of the BJD rally he was scheduled to address with the Left in Bhubaneswar after the Congress conveyed to him that his hobnobbing with the CPM and CPI would be treated as an unfriendly act. ( Watch )

In a major climbdown, Pawar settled for addressing the Bhubaneswar rally via the phone, while his representative, NCP general secretary D P Tripathy, deferred to the Congress’s sensitivities by blanking out the Left from his speech at the rally.

The reason cited by the NCP for staying away from the rally-a sudden technical snag in the helicopter that was meant to take the Union agriculture minister from Nashik to Mumbai to take off for Bhubaneswar in a Bombardier Challenger-failed to cut ice with political circles in both Mumbai and Delhi. Even the Left blamed the NCP chieftain’s no show on `arm-twisting’ by the Congress.

In 1991, Pawar had, in similar fashion, dropped the gauntlet after staking his claim for the prime ministership. Friday’s development is seen as a setback to the credibility of the Third Front and an embarrassment for the Left, the mentors of the political toddler. Besides, it has strengthened the perception of Pawar as a quitter with little stomach for a fight.

Importantly, it underlined the Congress’s resolve not to yield easily to its junior partners-a pointer that the party may not oblige those who are planning to question its right to lead the next non-BJP coalition at the Centre.
Only on Thursday, the NCP had belligerently justified its participation in the Bhubaneswar rally, stating that the Congress, having rejected the idea of a national alliance, could not prevent its partners from drawing up their list of friends outside Maharashtra.

Sources said that Pawar blinked after the Congress, through an emissary, put it to him that his presence at a rally which the Left had tom-tommed as marking a challenge to the Congress would not be appreciated.

The caution emphasized by Pawar’s colleagues who questioned the need to antagonise the Congress for the sake of the Left-which counts for little in the NCP’s power base of Maharashtra-also contributed to the NCP boss choosingdiscretion over confrontation with his partner in Maharashtra which will have a huge say in deciding the make-up of the next non-BJP government.

On Friday, Pawar was at pains to distance himself from the Left. “I never said that we are part of the Third Front. I was going there because my party is contesting elections in Orissa in alliance with the BJD. We are with the UPA.” To disclaim any hostile intent towards the UPA, Pawar went on to declare that the UPA would achieve the “magic figure” when the results wereout on May 16.

He said that he had planned to go to Bhubaneswar only because his party was contesting one Lok Sabha and eight assembly seats in the state in collaboration with the BJD.

There were few takers for the `technical snag’ reason cited by the NCP for Pawar not making it to the BJD show. Party sources said that the helicopter developed a snag after coming to Mumbai for refuelling and could not go to Nashik to take Pawar to Santa Cruz airport from where he was to take off in a Bombardier.

Political circles in Mumbai quickly pointed out that Nashik had refuelling facilities and there was no need for the chopper to fly to Mumbai. They also said that Pawar, had he so wished, could have reached Santa Cruz airport in Mumbai by road from Nashik.
The Congress, which on Thursday publicly frowned at Pawar’s move to sup with the Left, made a disciplined effort not to gloat over the NCP chieftain’s about-turn. Party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan restricted herself to expressing satisfaction at Pawar heeding the Congress’s counsel to introspect on his proposed move to join the rally in Bhubaneshwar.

But its leaders were clearly thrilled with Pawar’s decision to hold back–that could help the party counter the perception that it could easily acquiesce in any attempt by its partners to revise the terms of trade. Reeling under the huge embarrassment, the Left blamed the Congress for `arm-twisting’ Pawar and tried to put on a brave front by arguing that while the damage to the UPA might have been delayed, it had not been eliminated.

But there was no doubt that with Pawar playing truant, the Third Front experiment had suffered a setback. The incident has also raised questions within the Left Front about the profitability of Prakash Karat’s enterprise in seeking to erect a so-called Third Front with a set of political mavericks.

Grape farmers in Maharashtra losing business

Pune, Apr 4 (ANI): Grape growers in Maharashtra are loosing their business due to wineries canceling their contracts as a consequence of declining demand for Indian wines.

In 58 wineries of Maharashtra, the wine produced last year is still lying unsold. As a result, the wineries have reduced production. The farmers are unable to even get Rs. 24-30 per kg for grapes, which they were getting earlier.

“I have suffered huge losses. Even the wine factories that are taking grapes are lifting only four to five ton produce. Because of this, my grapes are still lying in fields and are rotting,” said Ullamrao Madane, a farmer.

The wineries say they are now importing wine from other countries for quality and cost effectiveness.

“The wine which we import to India, we maintain its quality according to production, which is not done in our country. Secondly, grape costs in India are higher as compared to foreign countries. Also the quality of wine here is inferior compared to foreign counterparts and imported wines are cheaper, so we import,” said H.S Tambhe, Chairman and MD, Century Wines Pvt. Ltd.

In Maharashtra, wine grapes are cultivated in around 9000-acre farmland.

Last year in regions like Nashik, Pune, Latur and Solapur , large scale cultivation of different types of wine grapes was done. By Shivaji(ANI)

NCP sets ‘strict conditions’ before Congress

Nashik, Mar 1 (ANI): Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday reportedly laid down strict conditions before its United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ally Congress.

Pawar has toughened the party’s stance to get a 50 percent share of seats in Maharashtra in General elections and pressed UPA’s lead party to go for a national pre-poll alliance with its allies, saying it may have to look for ‘an alternative’ otherwise.

“As a big party, the Congress should come out with the pre-poll alliance and alliance partners should get a chance to contest from constituencies in which they are strong,” he said.

Facing strident demands from within his party that the NCP must insist on getting 24 of the 48 seats at stake, Pawar indicated his party may have a rethink if the Congress did not relent though he did not say in as many words.

Addressing the reporters, Pawar said his party had seat-sharing talks with Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) Chandrababu Naidu and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supreme Jayalalitha but ‘no final decision has been taken’.

The Minister said the party was looking beyond Maharashtra and wanted to put candidates for around 20 Lok Sabha seats outside the state.

Hundreds of NCP members from all across the state took part in the meeting and told Pawar that the party should insist on contesting at least 24 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra if alliance with Congress is to continue.

Court to decide on validity of invocation of MCOCA in Malegaon blast case

Mumbai, Jan.21 (ANI): A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court will give its order over the validity of invocation of stringent provisions of MCOCA in the Malegaon blast case here on Thursday.

Special MCOCA Judge Y. D. Shinde, who was expected to pass the order on Wednesday, adjourned it till Thursday stating that the court needs to peruse the chargesheet.

On Tuesday, the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) filed its chargesheet against 14 accused in the Malegaon bomb blast case charging them under MCOCA, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act.

Defence lawyers, however, had argued that before the court takes cognisance of the chargesheet, it should first look into the merits of invocation of MCOCA on the accused in the case.

MCOCA was invoked after one of the accused Rakesh Dhawde was chargehseeted in two other cases.

Advocate Shrikant Shivde representing Lt. Col Prasad Purohit, who had been accused as the main conspirator in the chargesheet, had argued that both the chargesheets against Dhawde were filed after the Malegaon blast on September 29.

“Dhawde was arrested and produced before a court in Nashik on November 15, 2008. On the same day, the prosecution filed a supplementary chargesheet against him in the 2004 Jalna blast case,” Shivde said.

He stated that the court had, however, taken cognisance of that chargesheet only on November 28 while the prosecution invoked MCOCA in the Malegaon case on November 20.

Another accuse Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur’s case is being represented by Advocated Mahesh Jethmalani in the court.

“Technically, prior to invocation of MCOCA, Dhawde had no chargesheet against him. Before invoking MCOCA in the case, the prosecution should have submitted the two orders passed by the court while taking cognisance of the two chargesheets against Dhawde,” Sadhvi’s lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani aruged.

Special public prosecutor Rohini Salian, however, argued Dhawde had committed more than one offence and sanction for invocation of MCOCA was given after the competent authority, a senior IPS officer, perused the papers. (ANI)
