Non-UPA CMs join hands to fight ‘overbearing’ Centre

NEW DELHI: The battle lines for a states versus Centre faceoff got sharply drawn on Monday when non-UPA chief ministers – including Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik, Gujarat’s Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu’s J Jayalalithaa – got together for an unsched

uled meeting here to work out a common line on contentious issues. While this was the main purpose of the meeting, there was talk of this coordination developing into a common strategy for the coming presidential election.

On Centre-state issues, the three chief ministers are likely to find common grounds with Bihar’s Nitish Kumar, West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and Punjab’s Parkash Singh Badal. These CMs launched a blistering attack on the Congress-led UPA government at a meeting on internal security, accusing the Centre of meddling in states’ affairs by seeking to arm the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) with police powers and proposing intrusive changes in the Border Security Force Act.

Ironically, the attack came on a day when both PM Manmohan Singh and home minister P Chidambaram sought to avoid stepping on corns by emphasizing and accepting the need for the Centre to work with the states. But the diplomatic approach did not prevent non-UPA CMs from hitting out at the Centre.

The three CMs were not together for long, but the deliberate media exposure of the interaction at Tamil Nadu House pointed to a political subtext beyond a meeting of minds on opposing the Centre over initiatives seen to be an intrusion on state turf.

Sources said while the discussions on Monday centred on the need to prevent the Centre from pushing through proposals giving intelligence outfits nationwide search and seizure powers and oppose “misuse” of central agencies, the likelihood of cooperation for the forthcoming presidential election is on the cards.

The leaders agreed to continue their cooperation on federal issues and this could grow into a shared strategy on a presidential nominee although much will depend on Congress’s choice for Rashtrapati Bhawan. Congress is aware that it will need the support of parties like the SP, BSP and Trinamool and could opt for a nominee who is hard to oppose.

Opposing UPA over federal issues provides a ground for regional parties like Naveen Patnaik’s BJD to interact with BJP while state satraps like Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar are in touch over the past few months, beginning with the chorus against the Lokpal bill’s lokayukta provisions during last year’s winter session of Parliament.

The Tamil Nadu CM enjoys a good equation with Modi and Jayalalithaa’s recent meeting with leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley is also seen in the context of an anti-Congress grouping. Patnaik was careful in maintaining his meeting was in the nature of a courtesy call and Modi offered no comment, but AIADMK sources said the Centre’s “attack on federalism” was discussed.

Earlier in the day, Modi delivered a hard-hitting speech at the conference on internal security, saying the NCTC controversy was part of a “series of unsavuory episodes” and the Centre was “meddling with subjects under the state list”.

Jayalalithaa went a step further to say that states were “glorified municipal corporations” in the Centre’s view. The tough talk saw Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot criticize the opposition CMs for trying to gain “cheap popularity” during a serious discussion on internal security. The Congress spokesperson dismissed questions on a “fourth front” as a mirage.

The three CMs received support from their counterparts from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. Jayalalithaa warned against an “emerging pattern” wherein the state’s powers were “abrogated” by the Centre through passage of bills and accused it of showing “scant respect” for state governments. She added that the lack of consultation with states and failure to take states in to confidence was a “cogent commentary” on the system of governance in the Centre.

Modi took exception to the Centre’s claim that 97% of intelligence had been generated by the Multi-Agency Centre and only 3% had been contributed by states, sarcastically asking whether the responsibility for the inputs would be accepted in a similar proportion. He ran down central inputs that sent state agencies on wild goose chases.

In his address, Patnaik sought urgent consultations between the Centre and the states over issues like the NCTC, saying any delay would affect handling of law and order. He referred to the ongoing hostage crisis in the state saying that the delay in discussing NCTC had been dangerous.

Modi to showcase Gujarat in China

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may not be welcome in the US, but China is ready to roll out the red carpet for him as he gears up to visit the world’s fastest growing economy and Asian powerhouse next month.

Modi is likely to visit China Nov 8, reliable sources told IANS. The visit has been cleared by the external affairs ministry.

Modi is expected to make a pitch for greater Chinese investment in Gujarat and showcase his state as a hub for foreign investment. In particular, Modi is likely to discuss the prospects of Huawei, China’s biggest telecom company which has a considerable presence in India, investing in Gujarat.

China has been impressed by the economic transformation of Gujarat in the last decade and the massive foreign investment it has attracted in different sectors. When China’s Vice Minister Ai Ping visited Gujarat last week, he had lauded Gujaratis’ contribution to business development in different countries, including China. He had also extended an invitation to Modi to visit China.

Modi is expected to seek Chinese assistance to develop a “Gautam Buddha circuit”, that includes constructing a temple where Buddha’s relics would be preserved, to attract tourists to the state.

Modi’s visit will take place soon after Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, visits New Delhi and Mumbai next week to explore investment opportunities.

The visit by regional leaders has become a trend of sorts lately, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar going to China in June. Kumar’s visit was focused on cooperation in the field of infrastructure, agriculture and rural development.

Despite differences over a host of issues, economic ties between India and China have been showing a steady upswing.

The two countries recently held their maiden strategic economic dialogue to exchange their experiences in macro-economic management and to address issues like the growing trade imbalance in favour of Beijing.

Bilateral trade is already touching $60 billion, with both sides confident of scaling it up to $100 billion.

BJP to discuss its election strategy for Bihar

Patna (Bihar), June 11 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a two-day National Executive meeting beginning on Saturday in Patna to discuss its election strategy for Bihar.

The party is expected to launch its campaign in the State, where it is a major partner in the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Government.

This will also be a test for BJP President Nitin Gadkari, as this will be the party”s first electoral challenge after he took over the reigns.

The BJP is expected to go all out against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre for its alleged step motherly treatment towards non-Congress states and highlight its failures.

The failure of the Central Government to control rising prices and Naxalism would also figure in the resolutions.

“The top BJP leadership will minutely scrutinise the UPA Government”s performance in reference to its handling of terrorism and economy, Naxalite insurgency and the step motherly treatment meted to non-Congress, non-UPA governments in the states,” said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

A ”Rashtriya Swabhiman” (national pride) rally will be held at the conclusion of the meet, which will be addressed by top party leaders signalling the launch of the Bihar campaign.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be a prominent speaker in the rally, as this will be his first visit to Bihar after becoming Chief Minister in October 2001.

Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states will be attending the National Executive meeting, during which the party is expected to focus on the achievements of the Janata Dal-United Government led by Nitish Kumar in Bihar, which has logged 11 percent growth rate in the last five years. (ANI)

‘Insecure Modi attacking Nehru, Gandhi’

New Delhi, June 5 — The Congress hit out at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for questioning the relevance of Children’s Day, saying the BJP leader was “full of insecurities”.

At a convention of CMs of BJP-ruled states in Maharasthra, Modi wondered how Children’s Day has helped kids. Singhvi responded: “He should tell the nation how much good he has done to the children of Gujarat, many of who were orphaned in the violence unleashed by his approach.”

I prefer Shastri to Nehru: Modi

Mumbai, June 6 — Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday criticised India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru saying his fondness for children or celebrating his birthday – November 14 – as Children’s Day has not achieved anything. “What has Children’s Day done for kids who are poor and are starving?” Modi asked while delivering the keynote address at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) two-day conclave at Uttan on Saturday.

“Let me contrast this with Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri, unlike Nehru, was not a charismatic leader and rarely does anyone remember him.

But he coined the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, which electrified our army jawans and farmers equally,” Modi said. The party, at the conclave on good governance, has projected Modi as an ideal chief minister.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari tried to get the fractured party together and made an appeal for team spirit and “development-oriented politics” saying that the BJP represented a different political culture in India. The conclave, Suraj Sankalp, is being seen as Gadkari’s attempt to make good governance BJP’s unique selling proposition.

He has used Gujarat, which has done well under Modi, as an example of this. Modi, in his address, said transparency was important for good governance.

“Good governance goes beyond files. Real problems are not in government files and they should be sought in life and not in ivory towers or air-conditioned meeting rooms,” he said.

The party has been plagued with infighting between top leaders of the party since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The conference will focus on reviewing noteworthy and innovative welfare or development initiatives.

Representatives from six BJP-ruled states, including chief ministers and 65 junior ministers, are attending the conclave at the party’s political training institute at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini at Uttan near Bhayander. “We have to shun the Congress culture of greetings and salutations and think about the nation first, then the party and then about oneself,” Gadkari said.

Need to weed out sycophancy, says Gadkari at BJP meet

Seeking to discourage what he described as the “Congress political culture” like touching the feet of leaders, BJP national president Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said his party represented a “different political culture” and needed to weed out sycophancy.

Addressing the national convention on good governance ‘Surajya Sankalpa’, attended by chief ministers and ministers of BJP-ruled states and senior party functionaries at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabhodhini near Bhayender on Saturday, Gadkari said he had seen BJP activists trying to touch his feet after he become the party president and had advised them against doing so.

He said sycophancy that had crept into the party needed to be stopped and the “Congress political culture” needed to be kept outside the BJP.

Citing his own political career, he said he rarely displayed any cut-outs of leaders. He said that he remembered purchasing garlands for two persons only, namely singer Lata Mangeshkar and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. “We represent a different political culture. We are a party with a difference,” he added.

He stressed the need for moving beyond caste, language and region in politics and noted how he was appalled at a meeting of the party parliamentary board to hear talk mentioning caste of leaders.

He asked whether Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the keynote speaker at the conclave, could be bracketed only as a leader of the backwards. “A man does not rise because of caste but because of his work,” he added.

Gadkari said BJP-led state governments were doing good work and could communicate their ideas to one other. He said the BJP objective was to ensure antyodaya (welfare of the downtrodden) through sushasan (good governance).

SIT questions Togadia for role in 2002 Gujarat riots case

Gandhinagar, May 10 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia appeared before a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday for questioning in connection with his role in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.

Togadia was accompanied by several VHP activists, who shouted ”Jai Shree Ram” slogans and sang bhajans outside the SIT office, till his questioning was completed.

Togadia was earlier asked to appear before the SIT on April 29, but failed to do so.

He was summoned by the SIT after it had questioned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

On April 28, the Supreme Court gave an additional 15 days to the SIT, to conduct an inquiry against Modi and 62 others in connection with post-Godhra riots, and to submit its final report.

The Supreme Court had given the deadline to complete the inquiry into complaint of Zakia Jaffery in which she alleged that Modi, his cabinet colleagues, some police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abetted the post-Godhra riots of 2002.

Zakia”s husband and ex-MP Ehsan Jaffrey was among the 69 killed during the 2002 riots in the Gulburg Society.

SIT has already recorded statements of a number of persons named in Zakia”s complaint, which include former Minister of State for Home Gordhan Zadafia, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader I K Jadeja, former BJP MLA from Lunawada Kalu Malivad and sitting MLA from Mehsana Anil Patel, former IPS officer R B Sreekumar, social activist Teesta Setalvad, IG Shivanand Jha, some other senior police officers and political leaders. Modi separated IPL from BCCI: RCA official

Jaipur, Apr 16 (ANI): Rajasthan Cricket Academy (RCA) Secretary Sanjay Dikshit has taken Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi to task over the Kochi bidding controversy and accused him of separating the IPL from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“IPL lacks discipline,” said Dikshit, adding that Modi took all decisions in his own self-interest.

Further criticizing Modi, Dikshit said: “Modi is an autocrat in cricket.”

Pointing fingers at Modi”s character, Dikshit said two cases were registered against him in a drugs deal in America, where he had gone for his studies.

“One case was registered on March 1, 1985, while the other was registered on April 2, 1985,” said Dikshit.

Meanwhile, IPL Governing Body members have called for a meeting in Dharamsala to discuss the issue.

Sources said Modi has not been invited for the meeting. BCCI President Shashank Manohar may preside over the meeting as Co-IPL chief.

Income Tax officials on Thursday conducted a raid at the IPL headquarters and at Modi”s office in Mumbai. They also quizzed Modi on the bidding process and the ownership of all IPL teams.

The officials are probing the source of funding for the Twenty20 league and any increase in income of the franchisee owners. They are expected to look at the IPL bidding process in detail.

They will also examine various contracts by the IPL and its demands of Rs 120 crore advanced tax.

The Income Tax Department had earlier issued four notices to the IPL, asking it to clear income tax dues.

Kochi franchise spokesman and former MP Satyajit Gaekwad had alleged that Modi was acting under pressure from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who after failing to secure a franchise for the state-based Adani Group, wanted the Kochi franchise to shift base to Ahmedabad. (ANI)

Option of Modi being summoned remains open, says Nanavati Commission

Gandhinagar, Apr 1(ANI): The Nanavati Commission, which is probing the 2002 Godhra incident, on Thursday informed the Gujarat High Court that its decision to not summon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was not the final decision.

The Commission was today responding to a notice sent by the High Court on March 22, in which it was asked from the Nanavati Commission to clarify whether it would summon Modi by April 1.

The High Court was acting on the petition filed by the Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM), which had moved an application before the Nanavati Commission in April 2007 demanding that Modi be summoned for questioning.

Talking about today’s proceedings in the court, JSM lawyer Mukul Sinha said: “The proceedings were based on our request for the Chief Minister (Modi) to be summoned before the Nanavati panel.”

“In September 2009, the Nanavati Commission had declined to summon the Chief Minister, but today they have replied to the High Court’s notice saying their decision of not summoning Modi is not final and the option of him being summoned remains open,” Sinha added.

Sinha further informed that the next hearing regarding the issue would be on 17 June.

This would spell more trouble for Modi, who was questioned by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) on March 27 for over five hours regarding his role in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots. (ANI)

Modi brands Bachchan critics as ‘Taliban of Public life’

Gandhinagar, Mar 29 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday criticized those objecting to Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s presence at Mumbai’s Bandra Worli sea link bridge inauguration, labeling them ”Talibans of Public life.’

In his latest blog, Modi strongly defended Bachchan’s right to be at the ceremony.

Bachchan’s presence at the function had triggered resentment among some Congressmen, as he is the brand ambassador for Gujarat and said to be close to Modi.

“These Talibans of Untouchability have lost all their sensibilities in their pursuit of anti-Gujarat attitudes,” Modi said.

“Respected Mahatma Gandhi had worked ceaselessly for the removal of untouchability from our social life during his life time. But these people, while brandishing Mahatama Gandhi’s name, are, in fact, busy creating a new viciousness in the flow of our public life,” he added.

Modi described Bachchan as a great artist with legendary humility and even taller achievements who has chosen to celebrate the glorious heritage of Gujarat and her identity even while facing a lot of criticism from many quarters. This is inspiring, he said.

He said, the anti-Gujarat game plan behind the opposition and the controversy over Bachchan stood exposed now.

“They may well in future tell us not to eat even salt. They may even ban the eating of Amul butter and milk and order our young people not to wear denim jeans! And guess why? Because Gujarat produces these things,” Modi said.

“Friends, my heart is still unwilling to believe that these Talibans are unaware of the damage they are causing to this nation and to our society,” he added. (ANI)

Modi describes SIT questioning as a difficult moment of his life

Gandhinagar, Mar 29 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has described his marathon questioning by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the 2002 Gujarat riots case as a difficult moment of his life.

On Saturday, the SIT questioned Modi for over nine hours, over a petition filled by former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s wife Zakia, which named him and 62 others as responsible for 2002 Gulbarg Society carnage.

In a post on his blog, narendramodi.com, Modi thanked the people of Gujarat for standing by him.

“I have cooperated with the process of law and accepted its supremacy. I heartily express my thankfulness to the people for their support and prayers in this difficult moment,” Modi wrote on his blog.

Modi stated that he tried to respect the law of the land and to respect the supremacy of law by appearing before the SIT.

“I have, in all humility, tried to respect the law of our great land and endeavored to respect the supremacy of the law by my behavior,” he said.

Earlier, the SIT chief R K Raghavan had described Modi’s questioning as a big step forward in seeking to deliver justice to 2002 Gujarat riots victims. (ANI)

Modi, who appeared before the Supreme Court appointed SIT this morning which questioned him for over five hours.

Modi claimed that his appearance before the SIT was his answer to critics.

“I am abiding by the Indian Constitution. As I said earlier, no one is above the Indian Constitution, and today, my action has reiterated the same,” he said.

The SIT questioned Modi in connection with the Gulbarg Society carnage in

2002.

There had been reports that Modi”s interrogation would not take place inside the SIT office for security reasons and that he may be questioned at a place mutually agreed by him and the SIT.

The SIT says it would continue Modi’s questioning later this evening.

Confirming this, Modi said: “The questioning is not yet complete, I may come back around 9.30 p. m. Let SIT officials also do some home work.”

Modi said there are no officials of Gujarat origin in the SIT and added that it is expecting a fair outcome.

“There are no officials of Gujarat origin in the SIT, all officials are appointed as per the choice of Supreme Court,” he said.

It was reported that the SIT chief, R K Raghavan, was not present during the questioning. (ANI)

Gujarat riots: Modi says ready to appear before SIT panel

Ahmedabad, Mar 27 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation on the 2002 Gujarat riots case on Saturday.

Sources said Modi has verbally responded to the SIT request by asserting that he is ready to appear provided a certain decorum is maintained by the investigators interrogating him on March 27.

There are reports that Modi”s interrogation may not take place inside the SIT office for security reasons and he may be questioned at a place mutually agreed by him and the SIT.

In a strong statement issued earlier after he was reported to have kept the panel waiting, Modi said: “It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT on March 21.”

In his statement, Modi pointed out that March 21 happened to be “a Sunday and a public holiday.”

“The purveyors of lies did not even bother to check whether the SIT officers appointed by Supreme Court were present in Gujarat on March 21,” Modi said.

Modi alleged that the date March 21, was given out by “some vested interests and as part of the effort to interfere in the due process of law.”

Modi said in his statement that he would respond to the SIT, “Fully respecting the law and keeping in view the dignity of the body appointed by the Supreme Court.”
The SIT, which is headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director K R Raghavan, is looking into nine cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The SIT has asked Modi to appear before it in connection with the Gulbarg Society carnage case.

Modi has been named as one of the 63 accused in the petition filed by Zakiya Jafri, the widow of the Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed by rioters in Gulbarg society of Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002.

In the case filed in the Supreme Court, Zakiya stated that Modi and 62 others had conspired during the riots, and that senior ministers had ordered bureaucrats and policemen not to respond to calls for help. Over a thousand people died in the Gujarat communal riots.

The Gujarat High Court has issued a notice to the Nanavati Commission asking it to explain, by April 1, whether it too would summon Narendra Modi as part of its inquiry into the 2002 riots. (ANI)

Chavan asked to explain Bachchan”s presence at Mumbai Sea Link function

Mumbai, Mar 25 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is in hot water over being seen with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan at the inaugural function of the second phase of Worli-Bandra sealink.

Party sources said that the Congress high command has taken note of Bachchan”s presence and asked for an explanation from Chavan.

Chavan, however, has clarified his stand saying he would have not attended the function, had he known about Bachchan”s presence.

“Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of another state. We would like to promote our own state. Perhaps, I would not have attended the function had I known he would be present,” said Chavan, adding that there are reports that some people in the Congress are unhappy about his presence.

Mumbai Congress President Kripashankar Singh said, “I want to clarify that neither the Mumbai Congress nor I was consulted before inviting Amitabh Bachchan.”

Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador for Narendra Modi”s Gujarat – and Modi is a political pariah for the party.

Meanwhile, Bachchan on Thursday said the controversy over his presence at the function had been ”manufactured” by the media.

The superstar in his blog wrote: “A fresh controversy has been rapidly manufactured on my involvement. The media has been hounding me since the event at the sea link has got over, through incessant SMSes.”

The function was organised on Wednesday by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which falls under the PWD Ministry. (ANI)

Modi may appear before SIT on March 27

Ahmedabad, Mar 24 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation into the 2002 Gujarat riots case on March 27.

Sources said Modi has verbally responded to the SIT by asserting that he is ready to appear provided certain decorum is maintained by the investigators interrogating him on March 27.

There are reports that Modi”s interrogation may not take place inside the SIT office due to security reasons. He may be questioned at a place mutually agreed by him and the SIT.

Meanwhile, confusion prevailed on Monday as Modi said he was not summoned to appear before a Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing 2002 Gujarat riots cases on March 21.

On Monday evening Modi released an open letter defending his stand.

In a strong statement issued a day after he was reported as having kept the panel waiting for him to appear before it, Modi said: “It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT on March 21.”

Modi to cooperate with SIT: Arun Jaitley

Ahemadabad, Mar 22 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata leader Arun Jaitley on Monday said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Gulbarg carnage case of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Interacting with the media here, Jaitely, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said: “When Modi has to appear there (before the SIT) at designated time, he will. He will cooperate with the SIT.”

Commenting on why Modi didn’t appear before the SIT, Jaitley told reporters: “SIT didn’t fix March 21 for Modi’s appearance.”

“For the past few days, there has been incorrect information circulated in the media from some interested quarters about the date of SIT’s summon. It is an effort to create wrong impression to interfere in the process of law,” he added.

Earlier the day, Narendra Modi issued an open letter where he reasoned out that the SIT don’t summon anyone on Sundays and on public holidays.

“I will respond to the SIT fully respecting law and keeping in view the dignity of the body appointed by the Supreme Court. But it is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT (Special Investigation Team) on March 21,” read the statement. Gujarat High Court asks Nanavati Commission to clarify on summoning Modi

Gandhinagar, Mar 22 (ANI): The Gujarat High Court on Monday asked Justice Nanavati Commission which is probing the 2002 post-Godhra riot cases, whether it would summon State Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The High Court issued the notice to Nanavati Commission through the state’s Advocate General to reply to the court in this regard by April 1.

The Court gave instructions while hearing a petition filed by the Jan Sangharsh Manch, which represents the victims of the 2002 riots.

In April 2007, the JSM had moved an application before the Nanavati Commission demanding that Modi be summoned for questioning, but the commission has not called Modi for questioning.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) summoned Modi for questioning in connection with the Gulburg Society carnage, but Modi failed to show up before the commission. (ANI)

Veraval riots: Nanavati Commission not to issue notice against Modi

Ahmedabad, Sep.19 (ANI): In a major reprieve for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati Commission on Saturday confirmed that it would not be issuing any notice to him in connection with the communal riots in Veraval.

However, the commission has asked the State Government to give it transcripts of the conversations that took place prior to the riots, during the riots and in its aftermath.

The commission has so far given a clean chit to Modi in the post-Godhra events. The Nanavati Commission said there was no evidence to show there was lapse in Modi’s or his ministers’ role in providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and direction given by the National Human Rights Commission.

Communal attacks on Muslims took place in Gujarat between February and May 2002.

The riots occurred after the burning of the Sabarmati Express. According to official figures tabled in the parliament, more than a thousand people were killed (790 Muslims and 254 Hindus) in the violence after the train incident. More than two hundred and fifty thousand people were displaced (about 200,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus).

Organizations such as Human Rights Watch criticized the Indian government for failure to address the resulting humanitarian condition of people, “overwhelming majority of them Muslim,” who fled their homes for relief camps in the aftermath of the events.

Many of the investigations and prosecution of those accused of violence during the riots have been opened for reinvestigation and prosecution. According to an official estimate, 1044 people were killed in the violence, including those killed in the Godhra train fire. Another 223 people were reported missing, 2,548 injured, 919 women widowed and 606 children orphaned. About 100,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus were in relief camps. (ANI)

Gujarat cricket will be professionalised, says Modi

Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Sep.15 (ANI): Ending the Congress party’s domination of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) by taking over the presidency of the outfit, state Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that it would be his endeavour to professionalise the activities of the GCA.

Speaking to reporters after being elected unanimously to the post, Modi said that there was so much taking place outside and beyond the world of cricket, that he would use every opportunity and technical know-how to make cricket in Gujarat more market savvy and a better sporting entity.

Thanking all those who had elected him unopposed, he said that in the coming months and years he would do his best to improve the state of cricket in the state.

Modi replaced Narhari Amin as GCA president.

The GCA, affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), governs the game of cricket in Gujarat.

It is involved in the conduct of the game from the grass root level to the International level. (ANI)
