Procession to mark tercentenary of Sikh hero reaches Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 29 (ANI): The six-week-long historical procession to hail the tercentenary celebrations of Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur has arrived at New Delhi.

The victory march of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur took off from Gurudwara Banda Ghat Sahib at Nanded located in India”s western state of Maharashtra on March 30.

It will be travelling across several states before reaching its final destination, Sirhind at Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab, by May 14.

The Panj Piares (five beloved Sikhs) led a bedecked palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib, which was followed by vehicles displaying arms and ammunition of renowned Sikh warriors.

The grand Fateh march left from Maharashtra’s Nanded, the holy place where Baba Banda Singh Bahadur met Guruji.

The march is passing through various states before culminating at Fatehgarh Sahib

The devotees are showing great happiness, enthusiasm, love and devotion with their participation.

“This march has entered Delhi today and city”s devotees have welcomed the march with much fanfare. The procession has also been graced with the presence of prominent public figures from of the state,” said Avtar Singh Makkar, President, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

He also noted that one of the biggest attractions of this procession is the horse from the family of ”Neela Ghoda” (blue horse) of Guru Gobind Singh and the team of Gatka (traditional Indian martial art) made up by hundreds of Sikhs.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely were among the numerous public figures present to receive the procession.

” I am very happy that the Fateh March will pass through Delhi and stay here for three days giving an opportunity to the people of the city to be a part of the procession,” said Sheila Dikshit.

This procession has been organised to salute the great Sikh General Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, whose real name was Madho Das. Guru Gobind Singh blessed and converted him into the Sikh fold.

After becoming one of Guru”s true Sikhs ”Banda Bahadur”, as he was popularly known, taught a lesson to the Mughals in Punjab by killing the then Governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, in a war at Chhapadchiri.

One of the most revolutionary acts of Banda Bahadur, after establishing his authority in Punjab, was the abolition of the Zamindari system (a system employed by Mughals to collect taxes from peasants) and granting proprietary rights to the actual tillers of the land.

A park and a museum in his memory is being set up on 10 acres of land at Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab.(ANI)

Villagers in Paithan in Maharashtra forced to purchase water

Paithan (Maharashtra), May 13 (ANI): Villagers in Paithan, a sub division district of Maharashtra, are forced to purchase water as the water crisis deepened in the region.

Villagers here are appalled that even when they live close to the Nathsagar dam, they have inadequate water supply.

The villagers alleged that the dam water is being supplied to Nanded, the village of state Chief Minister whereas residents in Paithan are spend rupees 50 to 60 per day for water.

“Even though our village is near to the dam of sub division district, Paithan, since the last two to three years, we are forced to buy water. Every day, we have to buy water costing 50-60 rupees. And the water of Paithan dam is going to Chief Minister’s village, Nanded. We have water shortage even when we are in the vicinity of the dam,” said Suresh Gaikwad, a villager.

The private and government water tankers have failed to provide adequate water supply to this region.

The officials say that since Paithan region doesn’t come under an irrigation project, people are bound to face some kind of water shortage.

“It is right that there is a dam in Paithan sub division district. Even a canal passes only through some areas of Paithan,” said AP Kohirkar, a superintending engineer. By Abdul Hadi (ANI)

From Milan to Marathwada

FROM THE and #252;ber-chic environs of Milan amid fashion luminaries like Georgio Armani and Gianni Versace to the dustbowls of Marathwada slugging it out with politicians double her age, 27-year-old Preeti Shinde has made a reverse journey of sorts. Shinde, an MBA in Fashion Marketing from the Milan-based Insituto Europeo di Design, seems to be an unlikely candidate for the general elections in Nanded, where the only fashion accessories are multi-coloured bandanas people tie to escape the heat wave.

However, Shinde, as a Lok Sabha candidate from Vinay Kore’s Jan Surajya Party, is giving established politicians in Nanded sleepless nights, as she takes on CM Ashok Chavan’s brother-in-law Bhaskarrao Bapurao Khatgaonkar, in the CM’s home turf of Nanded. A fiery orator who is proficient in Marathi as well as Italian, Shinde is the daughter of ex-IPS officer Madhu Shinde and was born in Jalgaon but has spent the bulk of her life in Mumbai.

After completing her masters in Political Science, Shinde went to Italy to complete her MBA. After returning from Italy, she had been working with a textile firm, Alok Industries, as an assistant sourcing manager. A chance meeting with the 37-year-old Vinay Kore, the chief patron of Jan Surajya Party and cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government, however, made her decide to take the plunge in electoral politics.

“We all tend to live insulated lives, not understanding what goes on in far away areas. I always wanted to do something for the nation.

However, it was only after meeting Kore that I decided to turn my words into action,” says Shinde. Kore decided to field Shinde as one of the two candidates of the party and asked Shinde to shift base to Nanded and work with the party cadre.

In her three-month stay at Nanded, Shinde claims to have visited close to 800 hamlets and settlements in her constituency. However, many voters believe that Shinde may not emerge triumphant in the elections, but her presence has forced established politicians work harder to woo the voters.

“The voters of Nanded didn’t have an option apart from the two main political parties, both of whom have failed in developing this area. Shinde provides us an alternative to them,” says Shankar Waghmare, a voter from the constituency.

Shinde, however, believes that she is in the race to win. “I had read somewhere that Bharat and India are two different ideas.

The India of the city’s middle class is pitched against the Bharat of the village folk. My aim is to work towards making these two ideas come together and strive for inclusive growth of everyone.
