Boffins find mystery seafaring ancestor in the Philippines

London, June 04 (ANI): Anthropologists have discovered a foot bone during an excavation of Callao cave in Luzon, which has led to researchers’ claim that humans reached the islands off south-east Asia at least tens of thousands of years earlier than previously thought.

Armand Mijares of the University of the Philippines Diliman, and his colleagues insist the bone is definitely human, and they are provisionally calling it a lightly built modern human.

Mijares pointed out that its shape was unusual, and its size fell within the ranges of Homo habilis and Homo floresiensis.

It suggests that humans arrived on Luzon, the largest and northernmost major island in the Philippines, at least 67,000 years ago.

“The arrival of people in Australia 50,000 to 60,000 years ago is a good comparison,” New Scientist quoted expedition member Florent Detroit of the National Museum for Natural History in Paris, France, as saying.

“It seems coherent for us to think that in; south-east Asia and Australia, humans had sea-faring capabilities by 60,000 to 70,000 years ago.” (ANI)

World’s oldest calendar girl strips at 89

London, May 20 (ANI): A pensioner has become the world’s oldest calendar girl after stripping at the ripe old age of 89.

Christiane Luckardt has stripped off for a series of shots as “Miss September” for a charity calendar to raise funds for children’s groups.

“I’m at that very happy stage of life – just coming out of late adolescence and sliding into early onset dementia so I thought I should do something crazy while I can still enjoy it,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

The calendar, which is inspired by the original Women’s Institute calendar girls, features 12 OAP models with some strategically placed props to preserve their modesty.

“I felt a bit strange stripping off in front of strangers but at my age there isn’t much mystery left to the naked body so I just took the plunge,” she explained.

Money raised will go to charities in Gladbeck in Germany. (ANI)

South Carolina Governor Sanford admits to rekindling ties with Argentine girlfriend

Florida (US), May 13 (ANI): South Carolina Governor. Mark Sanford has revealed that he spent last weekend in Florida with his Argentine girlfriend, hoping to rekindle their relationship.

The governor and his girlfriend, Maria Belen Chapur, were spotted by tipsters for the website Gawker over the weekend, and Sanford confronted the rumors head-on Wednesday, conceding during a news conference back home that he had seen the woman.

“As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend,” Politico quoted Sanford, as saying.

“That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And, you know, the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front, given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us. And time will tell. I don”t know if it will or won”t,” he added.

Sanford called Chapur his “soul mate” during an emotional press conference last June in which he admitted that he had been unfaithful to his wife, Jenny.

The governor said little else about his relationship with Chapur, though he suggested to reporters Wednesday that it was time to back off. (ANI)

Tyra Banks to publish her first novel

New York, May 12 (ANI): Supermodel/talk show host Tyra Banks has announced that she will be publishing her first novel.

A press release from Random House, the publishers of the novel, which will be titled “Modelland”, stated that it is one of a three-book deal, and is expected to be published in summer 2011.

“It’s for all the girls and guys who want a lot more fantasy in their lives … and some fierceness and magic, romance and mystery, crazy and wild adventures, and yeah, some danger too,” the New York Post quoted Banks as writing on her website describing her new book.

Banks, 36, authored a how-to make-up book in 1998, called “Tyra’s Beauty, Inside and Out”. “Modelland” will be her first fiction book. (ANI)

Couple’s joke on winning unclaimed $15m, turns out to be own bounty!

Sydney, May 4 (ANI): A Brisbane couple is said to have joked about winning an unclaimed lotto, only to find out that it was their ticket that had won the 15 million dollars Powerball prize in the first place.

The two had not bothered to check their numbers after someone mistakenly told them the mystery winner, who bought the ticket in Toombul, had been found, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The couple, aged in their 30s, who want to remain anonymous, say the reality of their enormous win is still sinking in.

They plan to give some of their winnings to their parents.

They had bought the same type of ticket as the other 15 million dollar winner in the draw – a 12 game Quick Pick worth 8.35 dollar. (ANI)

Hakeemullah even if alive not in command of Pak Taliban anymore: Pentagon

Washington, Apr.30 (ANI): The Pentagon is unsure over the fate of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakeemullah Mehsud, but it is certain that the warlord does not exert any authority over the banned terror outfit anymore.

Speaking during a media briefing here, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said while Hakeemullah’s fate is still shrouded in mystery, it is believed that he is not in command of the Taliban.

“I certainly have seen no evidence that the person you speak of (Hakeemullah) is operational today or is executing or exerting authority over the Pakistani Taliban as he once did. So I don’t know if that reflects him being alive or dead, but he clearly is not running the Pakistani Taliban anymore,” The Daily Times quoted Morrell, as saying.

Earlier, a British daily quoted an Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) official as claiming that the Taliban chieftain, who was believed to have been killed in a US drone strike in South Waziristan in January, is alive.

“He (Hakimullah) is alive. He had some wounds but he is basically OK,” the official had said on conditions of anonymity.

Although neither the US nor the Pakistani agencies had confirmed Hakeemullah’s death, who was sworn in as the TTP chieftain following Baitullah Mehsud’s death in a similar missile attack in August last year, he was widely believed to have succumbed to injuries sustained during a missile hit in January. ‘Terrified’ goats reappear near farm

A flock of goats that disappeared from a Wheatbelt farm over Easter has been returned.

Greg and Ruth McGough farm at Mawson, east of Quairading.

The couple made an impassioned plea on ABC Radio last week, after the 66 goats disappeared under suspicious circumstances on Easter Monday.

Ms McGough says she could hardly believe her eyes when she looked out her kitchen window late on Friday and saw the animals wandering near the boundary of their farm.

“I’m over the moon. I’m not crying today,” she said.

“It was a wonderful outcome. They’re very spooked though so they have been harassed and badly handled but we have got them back.”

She says what happened to them will probably remain a mystery.

“They were absolutely terrified,” she said.

“We couldn’t get anywhere near them and these are goats that we can hand feed, you know, they’re nearly pets, so they’ve been absolutely terrified by the handling of these people who tried to take them.”

The couple remains convinced a rustler is operating in the area.

NW’s ‘horrific’ road toll a mystery

A north-west Tasmanian mayor is at a loss to explain the region’s high road toll.

The Circular Head area accounted for 14 per cent of all fatal crashes in Tasmania last year, which is eight times the state average.

Mayor, Daryl Quilliam says it has been a long-standing problem in the region.

“It’s horrific when we realise that 1.7 per cent of the population lives in Circular Head and yet 14 per cent of fatal crashes were at Circular Head,” he said.

The Council’s launched the ‘Look Out For Your Mates’ safety campaign, encouraging people to look out for others who might be drink driving or speeding.

The Mayor says there could be many factors at play.

“I don’t think that the roads in Circular Head are any worse than anywhere else,” he said.

“I think a lot of it is down to inattentiveness, people don’t appear to be putting seat-belts on, there is alcohol and drugs used by people who are driving, which is really unfortunate.”

Mystery lotto millionaire still unknown

The owner of a winning million dollar lottery ticket is yet to come forward and claim the payout nearly two weeks after the draw.

A winning ticket for the March 27 lotto draw was purchased at the Miners Store in Coober Pedy.

SA Lotteries’ Rebecca Payne says someone from the opal mining town has struck gold but might not realise it yet.

“We’re still waiting to hear from the state’s mystery millionaire, who purchased a system entry for the lotto megadraw a couple of weeks ago at the Miners Store at Coober Pedy,” she said.

“As yet we haven’t heard from the lucky winner, so if you’ve got all six numbers on your ticket we would love to hear from you.”

‘Who Assassinated Benazir Bhutto’ book may hold answers to long standing mystery

Islamabad, Apr.1 (ANI): While both international and Pakistani agencies are yet to come out with a final report regarding the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, an ‘investigative’ book penned by one of Pakistan’s most respected journalist, Shakeel Anjum, has revealed many hidden secrets surrounding the leader’s murder.

The book, ‘Who Assassinated Benazir Bhutto’, is an investigation carried out by the crime reporter of ‘The News’ in the past two years, besides discussion with officials of intelligence agencies, who have been associated with investigations.

In his book, Anjum, has disclosed several conspiracies which were hatched before and after Benazir’s murder, but he has left it to the readers to decide as to who are the real culprits.

The 300-page book also mentions many theories presented by investigating agencies after the high profile assassination.

The ‘lever theory’ presented by the Interior Ministry and later endorsed by the Scotland Yard team is one among those negated by Anjum in the book.

He has also raised questions about those who washed-off the crime scene within minutes of the ghastly incident and why they were not quizzed. (ANI)

‘Princess Di was killed to end romance with Dodi’

London, March 29 (ANI): The mystery surrounding the death of Princess Diana has been resurrected amid renewed claims by Britain’s renowned defence lawyer that her death was brought about by a failed attempt to end her romance with Dodi Fayed.

Michael Mansfield QC claims the car crash deaths in 1997 were the result of the plot to “end their relationship violently”.

“I don’t believe they wanted them dead. But they did want to end the relationship by a serious accident and in that case they still can be prosecuted,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

Mansfield, 67, added the plotters remained the “unknown quantity”. (ANI)

Final Ned Kelly eludes National Gallery

The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra was not the successful bidder for a record-breaking Sidney Nolan work.

First Class Marksman, a 1946 painting of legendary outlaw Ned Kelly, sold for $5.4 million at auction in Sydney last night.

That price includes $900,000 in fees and commissions.

The identity of the anonymous phone bidder remains a mystery.

But the NGA hopes the new owner is a private collector who might consider adding the painting to the gallery’s extensive collection.

First Class Marksman depicts the square black shape of outlaw Kelly with the distinct eye slit of his helmet standing with rifle at the ready on a dusty road in the bush.

It is the only one of Nolan’s 27 paintings of Kelly not in the NGA.

The NGA recently announced a brand new, specially designed gallery for the Kelly collection – its most popular Australian attraction.

E. coli source remains a mystery

The acting director of Gold Coast Water, Darren Hayman, says it is not clear how E. coli got into the drinking water supply at Nerang.

People at 2,500 properties had to boil their drinking water over the weekend.

That requirement was lifted yesterday but Mr Hayman says the hunt for the source of the contamination is continuing.

He says inspections have cleared pipes and reservoirs in the area but the water quality tests that raised the original alarm may be suspect.

“It requires a very stringent controlled environment to collect that test – in a sterile environment – and it’s possible that sometimes those tests can be corrupted,” he said.

“The tests we have taken since Friday have definitely indicated a clear result.”

Mystery of odd rotating stars solved by scientists

Washington, September 18 (ANI): A team of scientists has solved a longstanding mystery about a pair of stars called DI Herculis whose peculiar rotation had remained a mystery for three decades.

The shift in the orbit of DI Herculis was a mystery till now.

Now, MIT (Massachusetts Institute Of Technology) researchers and colleagues have determined that the stars are rotating tipped over on their sides, relative to their orbits around each other.

This produces tidal effects that counteract the expected rate for the orbits to shift orientation over time (called precession), finally explaining the mysterious anomaly.

The discrepancy in the rate of precession had been seen as a possible refutation of Einstein’s theory of relativity, so finding a conventional explanation means that relativity has withstood another possible challenge.

This discovery could also help to shed light on how binary stars (about half of all known stars) are formed and how their rotation and orbits evolve over time.

The mystery was solved by postdoctoral researcher Simon Albrecht and assistant professor of physics Joshua Winn and others, who used a high-resolution spectrograph called Sophie on a 1.93-meter telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence in France to make highly detailed observations that revealed the unexpected tilt – one of more than 70 degrees from vertical, the other more than 80 degrees – of the stars’ rotation axes.

The team now hopes to study other unusual binary stars to try to determine how unusual this tipped-over configuration is. (ANI)

Scientists unravel chemistry of Titan’s hazy atmosphere

Washington, September 16 (ANI): In a new research, a team of scientists has unraveled the chemical evolution of the orange-brownish colored atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan, the only solar system body besides Venus and Earth with a solid surface and thick atmosphere.

Scientists at University of Hawai’i at Manoa carried out the research.

The UH Manoa team, including Xibin Gu and Seol Kim, conducted simulation experiments mimicking the chemical reactions in Titan’s atmosphere utilizing crossed molecular beams in which the consequence of a single collision between molecules can be followed.

The team’s experiments indicate that triacetylene can be formed by a single collision of a “radical” ethynyl molecule and a diacetylene molecule.

An ethynyl radical is produced in Titan’s atmosphere by the photodissociation of acetylene by ultraviolet light.

Photodissociation is a process in which a chemical compound is broken down by photons.

“Surprisingly, the photochemical models show inconsistent mechanisms for the production of polyynes,” said Kaiser, who is the principal investigator of this study.

The mechanism involved in the formation of triacetylene, was also confirmed by accompanying theoretical calculations by Alexander Mebel, a theoretical chemist at Florida International University.

These theoretical computations also provide the 3D distribution of electrons in atoms and thus the overall energy level of a molecule.

To apply these findings to the real atmosphere of Titan, Danie Liang and Yuk Yung, planetary scientists at Taiwan’s Academia Sinica and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), respectively, performed photochemical modeling studies of Titan’s atmosphere.

All data together suggest that triacetylene may serve as a building block to form more complex and longer polyynes and produce potential precursors for the aerosol-based layers of haze surrounding Titan.

The study demonstrated for the first time that a sensible combination of laboratory simulation experiments with theory and modeling studies can shed light on decade old unsolved problems crucial to understand the origin and chemical evolution of the solar system.

The researchers hope to unravel next the mystery of the missing ethane lakes on Titan – postulated to exist for half a century, but not detected conclusively within the framework of the Cassini-Huygens mission.

In the future, the UH Manoa team will combine the research results with terrestrial-based observations of Titan’s atmosphere. (ANI)

When Pammie, mystery guy spent one hour in a outdoor bathroom trailer

New York, September 14 (ANI): Pamela Anderson had people talking when she attended a recent photography exhibition, as she disappeared with a guy to an outdoor bathroom trailer for almost an hour.

The hottie was present at the opening party for David LaChapelle’s new photography exhibition at the David DeSanctis gallery in LA.

“She was with a guy who plays a character in Cirque du Soleil. They were in the outdoor bathroom trailer together for almost an hour,” the New York Post quoted an attendee as saying.

The insider added: “It was a really crowded party but everyone was whispering about it. We’re not sure what was going on in there.”

Anderson’s representatives have maintained silence over the issue. (ANI)

Master gene that switches on disease-fighting cells identified

London, Sep 14 (ANI): British scientists have identified the master gene, called E4bp4, that causes blood stem cells to turn into disease-fighting ‘Natural Killer’ (NK) immune cells.

The discovery, by researchers at Imperial College London, UCL and the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research, could one day help scientists boost the body’s production of these frontline tumour-killing cells, creating new ways to treat cancer.

By ‘knocking out’ E4bp4 in a mouse model, the researchers created the world’s first animal model entirely lacking NK cells, but with all other blood cells and immune cells intact.

The breakthrough model should help solve the mystery of the role that Natural Killer cells play in autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

According to many scientists, these diseases are a result of malfunctioning NK cells that turn on the body and attack healthy cells, which cause disease instead of fighting it.

They believe that clarifying NK cells’ role could lead to new ways of treating these conditions.

Natural Killer cells – a type of white blood cell – are a major component of the human body’s innate, quick-response immune system, providing a fast frontline defence against tumours, viruses and bacterial infections.

The gene E4bp4 is the ‘master gene’ for NK cell production, which means it is the primary driver that causes blood stem cells in the bone marrow to differentiate into NK cells.

Led by Dr Hugh Brady, the researchers are hoping to progress with a drug treatment for cancer patients which reacts with the protein expressed by their E4bp4 gene, causing their bodies to produce a higher number of NK cells than normal, to increase the chances of successfully destroying tumours.

“If increased numbers of the patient’s own blood stem cells could be coerced into differentiating into NK cells, via drug treatment, we would be able to bolster the body’s cancer-fighting force, without having to deal with the problems of donor incompatibility,” Nature quoted Brady as saying.

The researchers proved the pivotal role E4bp4 plays in NK production when they knocked the gene out in a mouse model.

Without E4bp4 the mouse produced no NK cells whatsoever but other types of blood cell were unaffected.

“Now finally, with our discovery of the NK cell master gene and subsequent creation of our mouse model, we will be able to find out if the progression of these diseases is impeded or aided by the removal of NK cells from the equation. This will solve the often-debated question of whether NK cells are always the ‘good guys’, or if in certain circumstances they cause more harm than good,” said Brady.

The study has been published in Nature Immunology. (ANI)

Sea levels rose as much as 2 feet this summer along the US East Coast

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Reports indicate that sea levels rose as much as 2 feet (60 centimeters) higher than predicted this summer along the US East Coast, surprising scientists who forecast such periodic fluctuations.

According to National Geographic News, though the immediate cause of the unexpected rise has now been solved, the underlying reason remains a mystery.

Usually, predicting seasonal tides and sea levels is a pretty cut-and-dried process, governed by the known movements and gravitational influences of astronomical bodies like the moon, according to Rich Edwing, deputy director for the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

But, NOAA’s phones began ringing this summer when East Coast residents reported higher than predicted water levels, much like those associated with short-term weather events like tropical storms.

These high seas persisted for weeks, throughout June and July.

The startling rise caused only minor coastal flooding, but puzzled scientists.

Now, a new report has identified the two major factors behind the high sea levels-a weakened Gulf Stream and steady winds from the northeastern Atlantic.

The Gulf Stream is a northward-flowing superhighway of ocean water off the US East Coast.

Running at full steam, the powerful current pulls water into its “orbit” and away from the East Coast.

But this summer, for reasons unknown, “the Gulf Stream slowed down,” Edwing said, sending water toward the coasts-and sea levels shooting upward.

Adding to the sustained surge, autumn winds from the northeastern Atlantic arrived a few months early, pushing even more water coastward.

The higher waters caused inconveniences for some anglers and boaters and rearranged a bit of shoreline.

“A couple of sand beaches we’d normally fish from were eaten up. And the volume of water was higher than it normally would be,” said Paulie Apostolides, owner of Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk on New York State’s Long Island.

Even before the new report, released by NOAA on September 2, Apostolides said that many local fishers had already attributed the sea level rise to the “ferocious” winds from the northeast. (ANI)

Hugh Jackman used to call Daniel Craig by a mystery swear word

Melbourne, Sep 12 (ANI): Hugh Jackman has confessed that he once had a special swear word for his stage co-star Daniel Craig.

The actor duo is working together in a new Broadway play ‘A Steady Rain’.

But the ‘Australia’ star has revealed that there was a time when he wasn’t very fond of the current James Bond, and thus attached a swear word to his name.

He said that when Craig took a role Jackman coveted of poet Ted Hughes in the film ‘Sylvia Plath’ opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, he reacted by calling him the special name.

“That’s the first time I heard your name, and I attached it to, well, some swear word that I won’t say now. But then I watched your performance, and I was like, touche. You were great,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Jackman, 40, as having told USA Today. (ANI)

Mystery surrounds motive behind Malay-Indian actress’ suicide

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 11 (ANI): The mystery behind Malay-Indian actress K. Sujatha’s suicide continues, with her family’s counsel testifying that she took her life for reasons best known to her.

K. Kumaraendran, however, dismissed any third party involvement in her death.

The Star Online quoted Kumaraendran as saying that Sujatha’s close friend S. Vell Paari, who spent lavishly on the actress, including buying her a 420,000 ringgits condominium and financing her brothers’ education, should not be associated with her death.

Making his submissions, he said coroner Mohd Faizi Che Abu should not fail to reach a positive conclusion because there were doubts on some minor points.

Kumaraendran said the coroner had to consider the forensic expert’s evidence affirming that Sujatha herself drank the paraquat, as there were no splash marks on her.

He said the court should also consider the evidence given by Sujatha’s younger brother Surenthiran that he bought the paraquat upon her request.

“Sujatha had claimed that she wanted the para-quat for her friend. There is no interested party here,” Kumaraendran stressed.

He also said that the doctor who treated her was informed by her that she had consumed paraquat unknowingly.

DPP Geethan Ram Vincent said the coroner had to evaluate the evidence, as the evidence given by Vell Paari and Dr Sakti over the reasons for drinking the paraquat was difficult to believe.

He said Surenthiran’s evidence was suspicious, too.

Sujatha, 28, who had worked as Vell Paari’s personal assistant and head of corporate department, died on June 25, 2007, four days after being admitted to hospital. (ANI)
