Court serves paternity test order to Oz man through Facebook!

Sydney, June 4 (ANI): An Australian man, who eluded requests to a paternity test, has finally been served after a court ordered the legal documents be sent through social networking site Facebook.

Federal magistrate, Stewart Brown, who made the order, said the Adelaide case was unusual but “demonstrative of social movements and the currency of the times”.

The man, known only as Howard, had a brief relationship with a woman who later gave birth, and when the mother sought an assessment of child support her application was rejected for lack of legal proof of paternity.

The mother’s solicitor repeatedly wrote to Howard asking him to undergo a paternity test, but he moved regularly and there was no reply.

Letters sent care of his parents and current girlfriend elicited no reply, and a process server had no success delivering the documents.

When Brown was told a private message could be left for Howard on Facebook, as he was a regular user, he ordered that the documents be served electronically.

In a recently published judgment, delivered in Adelaide, Brown said he was satisfied Howard had been properly served with the documents and inferred Howard wanted no involvement as “the parentage test can have only one outcome because he is the child’s father”.

After the documents were served Howard closed his Facebook profile and MySpace website.

But Brown found the mother was entitled to an assessment of child support, payable by Howard.

Tim Butcher, a senior lecturer at RMIT, said it was an example of creativity in the legal system.

“People are finding new ways to use social media every day,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying.

“It’s only natural that courts, businesses, government agencies will use these tools to track us down. You have the world at your fingertips – but the flip side is that people can find us as well,” he added. (ANI)

Michelle McGee continued affair with Jesse James out of ”boredom”

New York, May 7 (ANI): Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee has revealed that she continued her affair with Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James out of boredom.

Appearing on Howard Stern”s Sirius XM radio show Wednesday, the tattooed model said it was “boredom” that led her to carry on an 11-month affair with the motorcycle mechanic, reports The New York Daily News.

“I had nothing better to do,” 32-year-old McGee said.

“It was a sexual thing. I also wished it was a relationship – but I wasn”t in love with him,” she added.

After weeks of conversations through MySpace, McGee said James invited her to take a tour of his bike shop for their first meeting.

James and McGee ended up sleeping together on the coffin-shaped couch in his office.

“Yeah, it wasn”t excellent,” McGee said. She said they had sex “two to three, four times a night, two times a week.”

“We watched Bullock on TV one time. James said they were separated, so I believed him. I feel bad for her, I do,” she added. (ANI)

Social media in classrooms may not improve communication

Washington, May 6 (ANI): A recent study by the Lab for Social Computing at Rochester Institute of Technology indicates that the use of social media in classroom settings has negligible effect on encouraging communication amongst students.

The results indicate that social media in classrooms may not prompt the same response as on MySpace or Facebook and does little to improve face-to-face communication amongst students.

“Many social media advocates have argued that the use of these tools in classroom settings could greatly enhance interaction and learning and assist shyer, more reserved students in becoming more involved, as has been seen in other online environments,” says Susan Barnes, associate director of the Lab for Social Computing and the leader of the research team. “However, our findings show that the incorporation of social media had no measurable impact on social connections, to the point that students did not consider other members of the class to be part of their social network.”

The research will be expanded to include multiple educational formats with different social media applications to measure how social connections differ from the classroom setting.

The results will aid educational planners to create better social media formats that have a greater impact on student social connections.

“The issues surrounding poor social network construction within online educational environments points to greater opportunities to examine how technology and mediated software can be better designed to suit the types of communication and interactions desired by our students,” says Christopher Egert, assistant professor of informatics, interactive games and media and member of the team. MJ’s ‘Thriller’ named ‘Most Groundbreaking Video Of All Time’

London, May 3 (ANI): Michael Jackson”s 1983 hit ‘Thriller’ has been named the ‘Most Groundbreaking Video Of All Time’.

The 14-minute zombie epic, directed by London filmmaker John Landis, topped a poll for MySpace UK.

Second in the list was ‘Here It Goes Again’ by US act OK Go in which the band members perform a dance routine on treadmills.

Britney Spears” breakthrough hit, … Baby One More Time – which saw the then teenage singer dancing in school uniform – finished in third position.

A-Ha”s animated promo for ‘Take On Me’, propelling the Norwegian trio to worldwide stardom – was fourth.

In fifth place was Johnny Cash”s poignant black and white film for Hurt – shot while he was in poor health just six months before he died from diabetes complications.

Will Francis, site editor of MySpace UK, said modern videomakers could learn a lesson from the past.

“Only two of the top ten were made this century. Which shows despite massive advances in technology, a brilliant idea coupled with a great star is an unbeatable format,” Sky News quoted him as saying.

The complete top ten:

1. Thriller – Michael Jackson (1983)

2. Here It Goes Again – OK Go (2006)

3. … Baby One More Time – Britney Spears (1998)

4. Take On Me – A-Ha (1985)

5. Hurt – Johnny Cash – (2003)

6. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen (1975)

7. Daft Punk – Around the World (1997)

8. Weapon Of Choice – Fatboy Slim (1999)

9. Sledgehammer – Peter Gabriel (1986)

10. Sabotage – Beastie Boys (1994)

Key British political parties pursuing Lily Allen

Melbourne, Apr 26 (ANI): Lily Allen has been courted by two of Britain’s main political parties because she reached out to young fans via Internet, the singer has revealed.

In an interview with The Sunday Times in London, Allen, 24, however, said that she was not keen to help either the Labour party or the Conservatives with their campaigning.

And the Tories in particular might not get her endorsement as David Cameron recently complained about his six-year-old daughter Nancy”s obsession with Allen”s songs.

Cameron said Allen’s music was “unsuitable” for Nancy.

However, even after objecting to her lyrics, he still gave one of her CDs to U.S. President Barack Obama along with selections from the Smiths, Radiohead and Gorillaz as representing the best of British music.

“Yeah, and also I thought that his favourite album that he likes listening to with his kids is the Arctic Monkeys, which if I’m not mistaken is all about one-night stands and prostitution,” News.com.au quoted Allen as saying.

“But never mind. I don’t think they’d have been denouncing me if I’d turned up at the Conservative party conference,” she said.

Allen said she was invited to the conference, adding: “Yes, I got an invite to the Labour one as well.”

Allen has famously used the Internet and online social networking sites like MySpace to spark interest in her music and reach young fans – catapulting her to global fame. (ANI)

Shares gain on health, financials

Strong gains in financial and health stocks have helped pull the All Ordinaries index back above 5,000.

Finance and health stocks took over from the mining and energy sectors in making the running on the market today.

Sigma Pharmaceuticals continued on its slow path to recovery. It was up almost 5 per cent to 54 cents, but is still well below its high of $13.50 reached in late 2004.

Sector giant CSL caused the biggest rise in the health index – it surged more than 3 per cent to $37.31.

The finance sector had a 1.4 per cent gain overall.

The major banks were all more than 1 per cent higher, with the Commonwealth and ANZ gaining almost 2 per cent.

Macquarie Group rose 0.8 per cent to $50.40 after buying 53 planes from the troubled American International Group for just over $2.1 billion – that is about $300 million less than their book value.

Newscorp jumped 2.5 per cent to $19.42 after saying that Myspace may introduce a subscription music service later this year.

Wesfarmers climbed 42 cents, to $32.70 after getting purchasers to agree to pay 70 per cent more for most of the coal it sells.

However, Macarthur Coal slipped nearly 3 per cent to $15.50, after most of its major shareholders said they had not yet reached a decision on the takeover proposals on the table.

Overall, the All Ordinaries index ended the day 40 points higher at 5,018, and the ASX 200 climbed 43 points to 4,995.

Currency and commodities

West Texas crude oil was worth $US84.27 a barrel at about 5:00pm (AEST), and Tapis is fetching $US86.

Spot gold was at $US1,155 an ounce.

It was also fetching 86.96 Japanese yen, 68.29 euro cents, 60.47 British pence, and $NZ1.31.

Teens’ music taste determined by conformity with peers: Study

London, March 29 (ANI): A new study has linked teenagers’ music choices to the horror of failing to conform with their peers.

Gregory Berns, Chair of Neuroeconomics at Emory Univerity in the US, conducted the research on teenagers listening to songs on social networking sites such as MySpace.

“We wanted to know, for example with Amazon.com, when you see a four or five-star rating of something, does that make you like it more?” TimesOnline quoted Dr Berns as saying.

Boffins found the adolescents were more likely to change their music preference after realising the tracks were popular with other people of their age.

Dr Berns added: “We can’t deny the fact we care a lot about what people think. A lot of people think we are individuals and in democratic societies we have freedom of choice. Actually, we’re slaves to what other people think.”

The findings have been published in the journal NeuroImage. (ANI)

Jesse James fast catching up with Tiger Woods in sexcapades race

New York, March 25 (ANI): After tattoo model Michelle McGee, a new woman has reportedly come forward and alleged that she had a two year affair with Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James.

The ‘Monster Garage’ star seems to be fast catching up with golfer Tiger Woods who recently apologised for his alleged affairs as many as 15 women.

Melissa Smith, who is over-tattooed as McGee, has claimed that she first got in touch with the TV mechanic through MySpace in 2006.

She insists that they later had unprotected sex numerous times.

Smith revealed that James got physically intimate with her on his office couch when she visited him in California.

“I said, ”Well, I guess I should get going, ‘You don”t have to,’ and moved his chair closer to me and started rubbing my leg. We ended up having sex on his couch,” the New York Daily News quoted Melissa as telling Star magazine.

Meanwhile, James” ex-wife, former porn star Janine Lindemulder, said he had called her two weeks after his marriage to ‘The Blind Side’ actress to tell that he had made a mistake.

Lindemulder told In Touch magazine: “I feel sorry for Sandra because she was so in love with Jesse that she was blind and gullible.

“(Bullock) once said, ”I finally have a man who has my back.” And all I could think was, ”No, you have this man who does it behind your back””.

James and Bullock have been married since 2005. (ANI)

Online biggies set for face off with grant of patent?

SAN FRANCISCO: Social networking site Facebook has won a US patent on news feeds behind the kinds of real-time updates that make social-networking websites a hit with users.

“The launch of News Feed in 2006 was a pivotal moment in Facebook’s history and changed the way millions of people consumed and discovered information on the site,” Facebook said on Friday in an email response to an inquiry. “We’re humbled by the growth and adoption of News Feed over time and pleased with being awarded the patent.”

Facebook declined further comment on the significance of the patent. The patent summarizes the “invention” as “a method for displaying a news feed in a social network environment”. The method was described in US Patent and Trade Office paperwork as including comments and links posted by social network users for sharing with other members of the online community.

That broad concept strikes at the core of Twitter, which lets people share thoughts or observations at any moment of the day using text messages of 140 characters or less.

Word of the patent awarded to Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg “et al” this week sparked concern among fans of microblogging service Twitter and other social networking services that thrive on real-time News Feed style updates. “This is stupid!!!” Twitter user A_Kim83 commented in a growing mountain of tweets on the topic on Friday. “Screw you Facebook if you start strong arming other sites.”

The patent gives Facebook a potential weapon to fend off competitors on an internet battlefield where social networking is a hot trend, according to analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley. “It is not just Facebook taking on Twitter,” he said. “It is taking on MySpace or any other social networking service. You might even argue it is a defensive move against Google.”

Avril Lavigne confirms split with Deryck Whibley

Washington, Sept 18 (ANI): Avril Lavigne has confirmed reports she and her husband Deryck Whibley have split.

However, she insists she’s “grateful” for her time with the rocker.

The pair’s 3-year marriage has been under the tabloid spotlight for a long time now, amid rumours the Canadian couple had parted ways, reports Contactmusic.

On her MySpace.com blog, Avril wrote, “Deryck and I have been together for 6 and a half years. We have been friends since I was 17, started dating when I was 19, and married when I was 21.

“I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship.

“I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note.” (ANI)

Clooney not a Facebook, MySpace fan

Melbourne, Sep 16 (ANI): American actor George Clooney has revealed that he would rather have a rectal examination on live TV than join Facebook or MySpace.

Clooney, 48, who is not a fan of the social networking sites, says that he prefers the medical intrusion to creating his own page.

“I’d rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page!” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, Clooney apparently treated his new girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, “like a princess” while they were in Italy for the Venice Film Festival. (ANI)

Beyonce shares winning moment with Taylor Swift at VMAs

Washington, September 14 (ANI): Beyonce Knowles shared her winning moment with Taylor Swift after bagging the Video of the Year prize at the recent Video Music Awards.

Swift was interrupted by Kanye West earlier in the show when she was giving her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. West declared that Beyoncé should have received the award instead.

The R and B lady later invited fellow winner Swift onto the stage so she could complete her speech.

“This is amazing. I remember being 17-years-old, up for my first MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life, so I would like for Taylor to come out and have her moment,” People magazine quoted her as saying.

A smiling Swift came out and said, “Maybe we can try this again.”

She continued, thanking “all my fans on Twitter and MySpace and everyone who came out to my shows this summer.”

Both the winners hugged and left the stage together while mentions of West apparently drew boos throughout the evening. (ANI)

Mathew McConaughey calls his son “fruit bandit”

Washington, Sept 12 (ANI): Hollywood actor Mathew McConaughey has dubbed his 4-year-old son “fruit bandit”, because he can’t stop eating fruits.

Referring to 100m sprint world record holder Usain Bolt, Matthew said: “Levi is doing terrific waiting for his little bro or sis we had to super child proof the new house because he’s motoring around like Usain Bolt – Camila and I can barely keep up.

“We call him the fruit bandit ’cause if there’s fruit out, he’s on it, taking it and eating it. He’s getting bigger, more fun, smarter and craftier by the day.”

Meanwhile, McConaughey and his partner Camila Alves is expecting their second child, reports Contactmusic.

He added the whole family is excited about the new arrival, which is due at the end of the year, and have started trying to guess the sex.

He wrote on his MySpace blog: “Above and beyond all other news, the most exciting thing is my lady Camila and I got another baby on the way, not sure if it’s a boy or girl but we have our instincts what are you thinking?” (ANI)

US analyst shows class divisions between Facebook, MySpace users

Melbourne, July 2 (ANI): A social analyst in the US has come up with evidence of class divisions between the users of networking websites like Facebook and MySpace.

Danah Boyd, who works with Microsoft Research New England, reckons that most Facebook users are white and wealthy, while MySpace users are uneducated and obnoxious.

She says that Facebook’s arrival sparked a migration from MySpace of white users, the educated and the wealthy, while non-whites had stuck together on MySpace.

“It wasn’t just anyone who left MySpace to go to Facebook,” News.com.au quoted her as having told a crowd at New York’s Democracy Forum.

“We might as well face an uncomfortable reality … what happened was modern day ‘white flight’,” she added.

According to Boyd, MySpace has become a digital “ghetto”.

“The people there are more likely to be brown or black and to have a set of values that terrifies white society,” she said.

Based on her interviews with American teenagers since 2006, she said that online migration mimicked the patterns of class groups’ movements across cities.

Her findings showed that teen Facebook users were far more likely to talk down to those who used MySpace than vice versa.

Boyd said that her research showed high school students found Facebook “more cultured” and “less cheesy” than MySpace.

“Any high school student who has a Facebook page will tell you MySpace users are more likely to be barely educated and obnoxious,” she said.

She also warned that the class divisions on social sites would harden over time.

“Their decision to (move to Facebook) was wrapped up in their connections to others, in their belief that a more peaceful, quiet, less-public space would be more idyllic,” she said. (ANI)
