Dialogue and rights violations can’t go together: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, May 31 (IANS) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, said here Monday that ‘human rights violations and the dialogue process cannot go on together’ in Jammu and Kashmir, referring to the killing of three civilians in an alleged staged shootout last month.

Reacting to the alleged fake shootouts in Machil sector on the line of control (LOC) April 30 in which three local villagers were allegedly framed and killed as separatist guerrillas, the Mirwaiz told a media conference at his party’s uptown Rajbagh headquarters today that ‘Human rights violations and the dialogue process cannot go on together’.

‘If we have to talk about the future of the people, how can that happen once the very lives of the people are threatened here,’ the Mirwaiz said.

Three villagers — Shahzad Ahmad Khan, Riyaz Ahmad Lone and Muhammad Shafi Lone — were allegedly framed and killed as separatist guerrillas in a staged shootout April 30 in the Machil sector on the Line of Control (LOC).

An Indian Army major and four others, including a Territorial Army soldier, have been booked for the killings.

‘We will not tolerate the murders of innocent people through fake encounters. An international committee must probe these fake encounters to establish the facts,’ the Mirwaiz told reporters.

‘We have no faith in Indian investigating agencies and the local police. We have seen how the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) dealt with the Shopian double murder and rape case,’ he said.

Two women were found dead by the side of a stream in Shopian town May 29 last year, triggering a Valley-wide agitation with people alleging that the duo had been raped and subsequently murdered by the security forces.

The CBI report in December had ruled out rape and murder as no external injuries were found on their bodies. It said the two had died due to accidental drowning.

The Mirwaiz alleged that many local youths had been missing from their homes during recent months and that a probe by an international committee was needed to establish their whereabouts.

He also said that India was trying to dodge international pressure to begin demilitarization and the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

‘Development, progress and constructing bridges will serve no purpose as long as the future and lives of the Kashmiris are at risk,’ the Mirwaiz said.

‘Why are the so-called democratic and secular Indian political parties silent at the fake encounters,’ he asked.

He added that in future, separatist leaders would not announce their programmes as the authorities here were putting them under house arrest to scuttle their plans.

‘We will be undertaking surprise visits to meet the people and not announce our programmes ahead as the security forces here put us under house arrest to scuttle our programmes,’ the Mirwaiz said.

Police said the second man, identified only as Belomesoff, she was going to meet does not exist.

Pak Punjab Govt. providing VIP protocol to jailed ‘Lashkar-e-Jhangvi’ leaders

Lahore, Apr 26(ANI): The Pakistan Punjab Government is reportedly providing financial support and other amenities to jailed leaders of the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ), including top hitman Malik Ishaq.

According to reports, Ishaq, who has been acquitted in 44 different cases of 70 murders and is currently being held for involvement in last year’s attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team, as well as other high profile terrorists are getting VIP protocol in prison.

Ishaq is currently detained in a jail in Punjab.

The leaders are also allowed to use cell phones, which they might use to plan attacks with their accomplices outside the prison, The Daily Times reports.

Sources also revealed that it is an old practice of the government as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Governments led by Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif had also extended financial support and VIP protocol to the late Maulana Azam Tariq, chief of the banned militant organisation Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, when he was in prison.

Tariq was even provided with a mobile squad and police security whenever he went out of the prison, they added. (ANI)

Life terms for murdering parents

A Perth man who claimed he was sleep walking when he murdered both of his parents will spend at least 15 years in jail.

Wearing steel capped boots, Vernon Silich kicked his parents Faye and Robert to death in their Yokine home in April 2008.

Today, Supreme Court Justice John McKechnie said while Silich’s alcohol intoxication provided an explanation for the crime, it did not provide an excuse.

He said the motive for the attack may never be known and sentenced Silich to two terms of life imprisonment.

He will have to serve 15 years before parole can be considered.

Carol Tipping is the mother in law of Robert and Faye Silich’s other son.

She says the murders have had a devastating impact on her son-in-law and her grandchildren.

“Right at the moment there’s not sufficient closure because there could still be an appeal and they’ve got to deal with it. It’s only 15 years and 15 years, it’s a possibility it may not be enough.”

Russia, Poland remember Katyn massacre

The Russian and Polish prime ministers have together marked the 1940 Katyn massacre of 22,000 Polish troops.

The killings were carried out by the Soviet secret police on the orders of dictator Joseph Stalin, however the Soviets blamed it on the Nazis for decades.

At a sombre ceremony in Katyn forest, Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin urged Poles not to blame the Russian people for the massacre and asked them to look to the future, not just the past.

In what has been described as an unprecedented move, Mr Putin invited Poland’s Donald Tusk to the ceremony commemorating the massacre.

As expected, Mr Putin, a former agent in the KGB, a successor organisation to Stalin’s NKVD, did not apologise for the Katyn murders and he stressed the common suffering of Russians, Poles and other ethnic groups under Stalin’s rule.

“With decades of cynical lies, they tried to blot out the truth about the Katyn shootings. It would be a similar kind of falsehood to … place the blame for these crimes on the Russian people,” Mr Putin said.

“However hard it may be, we must try to … come to terms with a common historical truth and realise that we cannot go on living in the past alone.”

Man guilty of kicking parents to death

A Perth man who claimed he was sleepwalking when he killed his parents has been found guilty of wilful murder.

Vernon Silich, 44, kicked to death Faye and Robert Silich at their home in Yokine in April 2008.

Silich denied responsibility and said he was sleepwalking when he repeatedly kicked the couple while he was wearing steel-capped boots.

The Supreme Court heard tests indicated his blood alcohol level about the time of the murders would have been as high as 0.397.

The jury deliberated for more than three hours before finding him guilty of two charges of wilful murder.

Tim Tipping, the father-in-law of the Silichs’ other son, says the case has been a strain on the family.

“They’ve been living in a very sheltered life for the last two years so at least now the grandkids can get a proper life,” he said.

Silich will be sentenced in April and has been told to expect a term of life imprisonment.

Brit kid’s kidnappers paraded before media, say they didn’t have prior plans of abduction

Islamabad, Mar.26 (ANI): The Pakistan police has claimed arresting two kidnappers who were involved in the abduction of a five-year-old British boy, Sahil Saeed, earlier this month.

Parading the two hooded and shackled kidnappers before the media, officials said they were on the look out for nabbing the other two suspects.

Local television footage showed the two men with covered faces, surrounded by police officers.

“We had no prior planning to kidnap this boy,” one of the suspects was heard saying.

Regional police chief, Aslam Tarin told media persons during a press conference that the arrested men were part of an international gang.

“We have arrested two members of this international gang,” The Dawn quoted Tarin, as saying.

Tarin said the men had raided Sahil’s grandmother’s house in Jhelum with the intention of robbing it, and had then kidnapped the toddler.

“They couldn’t find much, so they decided to take the boy and make a demand for ransom,” Tarin said.

“One is Safeer from Lala Musa and other is Imran from Rawalpindi, who are already wanted in various crimes of kidnapping for ransom and murders after kidnapping,” he added.

Tarin, however, did not disclose when the men were arrested.

Sahil was released after 13 days when his father Raja Saeed reportedly handed over a 110,000 pound ransom in Paris.

A Pakistani man and a Romanian woman were among five people arrested by police in France and Spain last week in connection with the kidnapping case. (ANI)

Indigenous victims over-represented in NT crime

New data shows Indigenous people in the Northern Territory are far more likely to be the victims of assault and murder than any other section of the population.

Indigenous people make up nearly one-third of the Territory’s population, and figures from the Bureau of Statistics show that in 2008 Indigenous people were victims in 59 per cent of all assaults, in half of all sexual assualts, and in nearly two-thirds of all murders.

US Fritzl being probed for murder of 10 prostitutes

New York, Aug 29 (ANI): As more details of Phillip Garrido, who kidnapped a girl 18 years ago and made her his sex slave, emerged, police are now eyeing him as the possible serial killer of 10 prostitutes in Northern California in the 1990s.

The police are looking over Jaycee Lee Dugard’s alleged abductor’s home in Antioch, Calif., searching for clues in the unsolved hooker murders.

Detectives have long thought the killings in both Antioch and the nearby town of Pittsburg were the work of a serial killer but have never had a clear suspect.

According to the authorities, several of the slain women’s bodies were found near an industrial park where Garrido, 58, worked in the 1990s, and one of the victims was a 15-year-old schoolgirl who disappeared after leaving a party in Antioch in 1999.

Cops had missed the chance to rescue Dugard on November 30, 2006 after a female neighbour called 911 to report that some people, including young children, were living in tents behind the house.

“Garrido was psychotic and had a sexual addiction,” the New York Post quoted her as telling authorities at the time that. (ANI)

‘Shiva’s Trishul’ used to kill Indian Australian woman, siblings!

Brisbane (Australia), Aug.18 (ANI): Prosecutors in Brisbane have accused Max Sica of using a pitchfork resembling “Shiva’s Trishul” to murder Indian Australian women Neelma Singh and her siblings Kunal and Sidhi in their Brisbane home in 2003.

The Brisbane Times quoted the lawyers as saying in a magistrate’s court that the pitchfork was kept in a prayer room at the Singh’s Brisbane home.

Vijay Singh, the father of the slain children, said he kept the pitchfork inside his house because it was often featured in depictions of the Hindu God Shiva, whom he and wife Shirley worshipped.

Under questioning, Singh agreed he had felt “let down” a number of times by Neelma.

Singh said he was “very hurt” when Neelma lied to him about being in Dubai working for Emirates airlines when she had secretly been living with one-time boyfriend Sica, 39, on Bribie Island for six weeks in 2002.

Mr Singh did not approve of the relationship between Neelma and Sica, the court has been told.

The Singh murders have been described as one of the most complex investigations in Queensland.

Last year Sica, a Stafford father of two, was charged with the killings.

Earlier this year he was refused Queensland Supreme Court bail and remains behind bars.

The hearing continues. (ANI)

Massive British college scam allowed thousands of ‘suspicious’ Pak students to enroll

London, May 21 (ANI): After the arrest of 11 Pakistan students for allegedly plotting terror attacks in Britain, it was revealed that those students had entered Britain on false student visas, but it seems that it was only a part of a larger conspiracy, as it has now been revealed that thousands of young Pakistan civilians had exploited a hole in Britain’s immigration defences to enroll themselves as students at a network of fraud colleges.

The Times has unearthed a major scam in which fraudsters have earned millions of dollars by luring students from Pakistan to get admission in sham colleges in Britain.

It has now been exposed that eight of the terror suspects arrested last month in Manchester and Liverpool were registered in a college that had three small classrooms and three teachers for the 1,797 students.

Another college claimed to have 150 students but enrolled 1,178 students, and offered places to a further 1,575 applicants from foreign countries, out of which 906 were from Pakistan.

The investigation further disclosed that :

those running the scam charged at least 1,000 pounds for admission places and fake diplomas. They created their own university to issue bogus degrees.

hey also charged 2,500 pounds for false attendance records, diplomas and degrees that were used to extend the students’ stay in Britain.
One wealthy associate, Mir Ahmad was wanted in two murders in Pakistan and was arrested after the disclosure.

Meanwhile, British Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said that the report has been passed onto the concerned authorities which are investigating the issue.

The information provided by The Times has been passed on to the UK Border Agency, which is investigating,” Woolas said. (ANI)

USArmy trial started for last accused of Baghdad murders

Vilseck, Germany – The final trial of a group of US servicemen who were accused of murdering four blindfolded Iraqi men and dumping their bodies in a Baghdad canal began Monday in Germany. Master Sergeant John Hatley, 40, the highest-ranked of five accused, has been charged with premeditated murder by the military court in Vilseck, Germany, where their unit is based.

The soldiers had been under orders to release the captured Iraqis, but instead killed them in early 2007. In their defence, the soldiers testified that they believed the Iraqi captives were terrorists.

Four other soldiers have already been convicted. One of the accused, Sergeant First Class Joseph Mayo, received life imprisonment and another up to 35 years.

Two accused received sentences of seven and eight months after the court martial was told they knew that the Iraqis would be shot, but did not personally wield the guns.

Two other soldiers were also investigated for roles in the murder, but were not charged.

Those previously on trial are expected to testify against Hatley.

Hatley had previously denied the charges, according to the German regional daily Der Neue Tag. A verdict is expected Friday. (dpa)
