Muralitharan to play Twenty20 cricket for Queensland Bushrangers

Melbourne, Aug.27 (ANI): Champion Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan will join West Indian Dwayne Bravo as the Queensland Bushranger’s second international recruit for the national Twenty20 competition.

While both players are not eligible to play in October’s Champions League international Twenty20 tournament and are committed only for this season’s month-long Big Bash, they would be eligible to turn out at next year’s Champions League if the team qualifies, reports Fox Sports.

In addition, the 37-year-old off-spinner could reshape Victoria’s Twenty20 bowling attack, which in recent seasons has been well-served by the likes of pacers Dirk Nannes, Shane Harwood and Clint McKay.

“It could be an all-spin attack, because really we’ve got [Brad] Hodge and [David] Hussey, [Cameron] White, Murali and also [Jon] Holland and [Bryce] McGain,” coach Greg Shipperd said.

The Bushrangers have also overcome the loss of long-time major sponsor Carlton and United Breweries with a three-year agreement with Dubai-focused property developer Dheeraj and East Coast (DEC). (ANI)

ICC failed to deal with Muralitharan’s chucking: Richardson

Christchurch, Aug 24 (ANI): Former New Zealand opener Mark Richardson has accused the Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of breaching the 15 degree flexion rule.

Richardson said Muralitharan often bends his arm beyond the 15-degree norm even though he felt it was not the spinner but the indifferent International Cricket Council (ICC), which was at fault.

“There is no easy way to put this, no soft way to broach it, so here goes – Muttiah Muralitharan is throwing the ball,” Richardson wrote in Herald on Sunday.

“I know he’s been tested, re-tested, tested again and cleared. And I know, with the special makeup of his limbs to the naked eye, his action looks worse than it is. But, for goodness sake, half of cricket is now not watched with the naked eye, thanks to the invention of super-slow-motion cameras, hot-spots, snicko and hawk-eyes.

“Many of the slow-motion replays I’ve seen of Murali have only strengthened my conviction he is exceeding the 15 degrees bending and straightening allowance. Is it not meant to be the other way round? Isn’t the hi-tech equipment meant to alleviate my fears?” he asked.

Unlike former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe, who often flays Muralitharan, Richardson didn’t blame the offie, but opined ICC had failed to deal with the issue.

“I don’t blame Murali for this situation. Murali can only do what he does – and what he does he does as a champion, and unlike the other great spinner of my time, Murali does it with good grace and gentlemanly conduct,” Richardson said.

“The problem lies with the inappropriate way in which the ICC has decided to police throwing. A player is suspected of throwing and then, for want of a better term, tested in a laboratory. We’ve all seen the pictures of Murali lit up with bulbs. To his credit he volunteered for this. Apparently he proved he wasn’t a chucker.
“But did he really? What he proved is that he can bowl within limitation, not that in the heat of battle he actually does,” The Dawn quoted him, as saying.

He said that the way the ICC has gone about dealing with this situation, too many bowlers now appear to have suspect actions and can operate for too long before there is any reaction. (ANI)

More than virus, Dilshan’s batting contributed to Kiwi defeat: Vettori

Galle (Sri Lanka), Aug 23(ANI): New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said that more than the energy-sapping virus that stuck his team during the first Test match at the Galle International Stadium, it was Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan’s explosive batting which contributed to New Zealand’s 202-run loss.

Dilshan scored 92 runs in Sri Lanka’s first innings and scored quickfire 123 runs in the second to take Sri Lanka to an imposing target of 413.

“When you look at how well Dilshan played and how poorly we bowled to him, it was probably the defining moment of the game,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

“There were a couple of opportunities there to put pressure on them, but everything we did, he took it away from us. He played exceptionally well, he played very aggressive innings, and when you’ve got a player like that, it makes it very tough to captain,” he added.

Vettori said that he wanted to take the game to the wire, however, failed to do so, as multiple players being ill in the team meant that they were bowled out for a meager 210 runs.

“I really hoped we’d take it down to the wire. I hoped that we could bat for long periods of time, but in some ways a few illnesses counted against us and the application wasn’t quite there,” Vettori said.

He further said that one of the most disappointing things in the Test was to lose as many wickets to the seamers as they did.

“Obviously Murali’s a difficult customer to come up against but the way Thushara bowled was probably where we let ourselves down,” Vettori said. (ANI)

We want to start the series on a winning note : Younis Khan

Galle (Sri Lanka), July 4 (ANI): As Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first in the first Test of the three match series here on Saturday, captain Younis Khan expressed the hope that he would like to start the series on a winning note.

Khan said his batsmen would have no problem countering ‘mystery’ bowler Ajantha Mendis.

“We have a lot of off spinners, left-arm spinners and leg spinners. The wickets are similar to Pakistan. Both teams know each other’s weaknesses. Because of our nature we compete with each other very well,” Khan said ahead of the first Test.

He said Pakistan is going into the Test with a positive frame of mind and would play three fast bowlers.

With Muttiah Muralitharan ruled out due to a leg injury, Khan said he would be missing Murali on the field.

“The last series I played against Murali, I pulled my hamstring stretching all the way trying to play him for two days. He is a fantastic bowler. Whenever Murali is under pressure, he talks to you,” The News quoted Khan, as saying. (ANI)

Meanwhile, rookie pacer Mohammed Aamer provided Pakistan a flying start here as he grabbed two wickets to provide his team with an early advantage.

Aamer removed both openers, Warnapura and Kumara Sangakkara with his fast swinging deliveries.

Sri Lanka were 72 for 2 when reports last came in. (ANI)

Bangalore Royal Challengers beat Chennai Super Kings by two wickets

Durban, May 14 (ANI): Bangalore Royal Challengers beat Chennai Super Kings by two wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Thursday.

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. Chennai got to a good start after openers Matthew Hayden and Murali Vijay added 32 runs for the first wicket.

Hayden once again played a fine knock and scored 60 runs off 38 balls with four fours and three sixes.

Apart from Hayden’s inning, no other player could bat for a long time at the crease. ]

The only partnership of substance for Chennai was of 45 runs that came between Hayden and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the third wicket.

Dhoni scored 18 runs off 20 balls with one four hit to the fence.

Chennai Super Kings scored 129 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs.

For Royal Challengers, skipper Anil Kumble, R. Vinay Kumar and Jacques Kallis took two wickets each.

Chasing a victory target of 130, Bangalore Royal Challengers got off to a poor start when opener Jacques Kallis was adjudged leg before wicket off Albie Morkel.

Royal Challengers had lost three wickets at a total of 30 runs, but Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor took their team to a total of 86 runs. Kohli and Taylor added 56 runs for the fourth wicket.

Kohli scored 38 runs off 35 balls with four fours and two sixes. After Kohli’s dismissal, Royal Challengers lost wickets on quick succession.

R. Vinay Kumar took two runs on the third ball and hit the fourth delivery of the last over for four to register a thrilling victory.

For Chennai, Albie Morkel and Jacob Oram took two wickets each.

Ross Taylor was declared ‘Man of the Match’ for his match-winning inning of 46 runs. (ANI)

Intikhab Alam criticizes ICC over Ajmal’s illegal bowling action issue

Abu Dhabi, Apr.27 (ANI): Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) for its inconsistency after off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was reported for illegal bowling action after Wednesday’s match against Australia.

“I think they (ICC) are lacking consistency in this process. He bowled exceptionally well and suddenly they decided that he has a problem with his action,” Alam said.

He said Ajmal’s action was no different from India’s Harbhajan Singh or Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, as he also bowls the ‘doosra’, the delivery which turns away from batsman, similar to these two spinners.

“Murali bowls such a delivery and he was cleared, Harbhajan was cleared and there is no difference between these two and Ajmal. I don’t agree that Ajmal bowls s different doosra, there is only one kind of doosra,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

He said Ajmal would continue to play until a final decision on him is taken by the ICC.

“They can’t decide with the naked eye about an action, you need to see the footage, so after watching the footage we will see what happens, but we will continue to play him,” Alam said.

On-filed umpires Billy Bowden and Asad Rauf along with television umpire Zameer Haider had reported about Ajmal’s suspicious action after the second one-day international match against Australia in Dubai. (ANI)

19 killed in road accident near Pune

Pune, Apr 20 (ANI): At least 19 people were killed and more than 15 others were injured in a road accident that took place around 40 kilometres off Pune on Monday.

Among those killed in the accident, six were women and eight were children.

The mishap occurred when the truck laden with iron rods lost control and turned topsy-turvy at Yavat on Pune-Sholapur Highway.

The injured were rushed to a hospital near Yavat for treatment.

These victims had boarded the Karnataka-bound truck on the highway.

“I was going to attend a wedding. On the way, I got off the truck to have my food. Soon, I saw the truck that had gone ahead overturn,” said Rajya, a woman who had taken a hitch-hike ride in the ill-fated truck.

According to the police, the truck driver has been absconding.

“When the truck went off the road, it got stuck in the side of the road which is loose soil and got overturned. Till now, 19 have been killed and another 15 injured,” said Ashok Murali, Superintendent Police, Pune.

Police said that the injured were out of the critical condition. (ANI)

Proteas spinner Botha’s action similar to Lanka’s Murli, says Oz bio-mechanist

Perth, Apr.16 (ANI): A University of Western Australia bio-mechanist has said Proteas off spinner Johan Botha’s action is similar to Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan.

According to Bruce Elliot, Botha has an action that looks “not quite as different as Murali but heading in that direction.”

According to the Daily Telegraph, Botha completely overhauled his action after he was suspended in 2006 and has since emerged as South Africa’s leading slow bowler in limited-overs cricket. He now faces a fresh round of tests after umpires raised concerns about his quicker ball and his doosra during the fourth one-day international against Australia in Port Elizabeth.

Eliot said the South African would always catch the attention of spectators and umpires because he has a fixed bend in his elbow and his forearm extends at an unusual angle, both of which are more dramatically evident in controversial Sri Lankan Muthiah Muralitharan.

“It doesn’t mean he is guilty or not guilty … (but) it is always going to look a bit strange. He is not quite as different as Murali but he is heading in that direction,” Eliot was quoted, as saying.

Elliott’s laboratory initially deemed Botha’s off-break and doosra illegal but eventually cleared him after remedial work in South Africa.

Botha can keep playing until the results of new biomechanical tests are available, and South African management hopes he will be cleared before the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June.

If he is again found to exceed the 15-degrees permitted for elbow extension, he will be banned for the second time in his career.

Elliott believes it is possible to correct any glitches relatively quickly, but said it was crucial that bowlers were made to simulate match conditions in the laboratory. To that end, the International Cricket Council is moving to ensure testing procedures are consistent. (ANI)

Krishnam Raju, Murali Mohan in star fight for Rajahmundry

Hyderabad, April 4 (IANS) It will be a clash of stars in the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency in coastal Andhra Pradesh as the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has fielded veteran actor U.V. Krishnam Raju against Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) Murali Mohan.

It is expected to be an interesting three-cornered contest as the ruling Congress party’s U. Arun Kumar is seeking re-election.

Krishnam Raju, popularly known as the ‘rebel star’, recently quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the PRP of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi. The former central minister’s name figures in the seventh list of candidates released by the PRP Friday night.

Though Krishnam Raju was keen to contest from either Kakinada or Narsapur, the constituencies he represented earlier, Chiranjeevi has pitted him against another actor of yesteryears Murali Mohan.

Krishnam Raju, who plunged into politics in the early 1990s, contested the 1991 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Narsapur constituency, but lost.

He later joined BJP and got elected twice to Lok Sabha from Kakinada and Narsapur in the 1998 and 1999 elections respectively. He also served as minister of state for external affairs in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government from 2000 to 2004 but lost the 2004 elections from Narsapur.

Since then, he was keeping a low-profile and was unhappy with the style of functioning of the BJP. While joining the PRP a few days ago, he had said that he was impressed by the policies of megastar Chiranjeevi.

Krishnam Raju, who began his film career in 1966, was a popular actor in the 1970s and 1980s and has acted in over 180 films. He is the fourth film personality in Andhra Pradesh to join the race for this month’s Lok Sabha elections.

Popular actress Vijayshanti is contesting as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate from Medak while Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and film producer Allu Aravind is the PRP candidate from Ankapalli.

Though Murali Mohan, a contemporary of Krishnam Raju, has been an active leader in the TDP for many years, this is the first time that he is contesting an election.

Murali Mohan, who started his career in the early 1970s, acted in several films over the next one decade. He later turned a producer. After taking a break from active cinema, he joined TDP and became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation. He also started the construction company Jayabher Group, which built many residential projects in and around Hyderabad.

The two actors will be facing Arun Kumar, the sitting Congress MP who has been in the news for taking on media baron Ramoji Rao. However, he faces an uphill task this time as a section of the electorate in Rajahmundry feels that he has not done much for the constituency’s development.

The BJP, which won this seat in 1998 and 1999, has fielded its state general secretary Somu Veeraju but he is not considered a strong candidate.

Flintoff looking forward to IPL contest

Bridgetown (West Indies), Mar.25 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is looking forward to the second edition of the Indian Premier League to be played in South Africa from April 18.

Though Flintoff is sorry that the IPL will not be staged in India this year, he says he is looking forward to matching his skills with bat and ball with the likes of Matthew Hayden, Murali Muralitharan, Kevin Pietersen, Albie Morkel and others.

Having been declared fit, Flintoff is likely to replace fast bowler Steve Harmison in the squad for the third one-day international against the West Indies. (ANI)

Upbeat India targeting Test redemption

Auckland (New Zealand), Mar.16 (ANI): The Indian cricket team will look to alter its far from satisfactory Test record in New Zealand when the first Test gets underway in Hamilton from Wednesday.

Having already won their first one-day cricket series on New Zealand soil, their upgraded squad is now confidently seeking to right another imbalance in the Test arena.

Until Virender Sehwag’s century powered India to victory at Hamilton last week, India had not won an ODI series here in six attempts harking back to the mid 1970s.

Their record in Tests makes equally grim reading – five fruitless journeys since the class of 1967-68 triumphed 3-1.

The current tour party, reinforced by batting luminaries Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman, promise to pose a tough proposition on wickets unlikely to be as treacherous as during their 0-2 series loss in 2002-03, reports the NZPA.

India’s batsmen have already prospered against the cream of New Zealand’s bowling apart from James Franklin, and possibly Chris Martin.

And with Dravid already acclimatised thanks to a century as a ring-in for Canterbury, impressive tyro Suresh Raina should not be missed.

Laxman, opener Murali Vijay plus bowlers Lakshmipathy Balaji, Dhawal Kulkarni and Amit Mishra will also join the squad as the ODI specialists head home.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni welcomed the test players merging into an already buoyant squad who are at least publicly unaffected by the emphatic defeat in the dead rubber yesterday.

“It’s not about what you have done, it’s about starting from scratch again,” Dhoni said.

“In tests you need good consistent cricket over a period of time, not just one session.”

India seem in tune with that philosophy.

They have lost just two of their last seven series – a sequence that sees them ranked third in the International Cricket Council’s test rankings. (ANI)

Murali becomes the leading wicket-taker in ODI’s

Colombo, Feb. 5, (ANI): Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan on Thursday became the highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals after claiming his 503rd victim.

Muralitharan dismissed Gautam Gambhir in his 10th and final over to move above former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram at the top of the list.

The 36-year-old Muralitharan reached the milestone in his 328th one-day international.

Averaging over six wickets per match, Muralitharan is also Test cricket’s leading wicket-taker with 769 victims in 125 matches. (ANI)

Sri Lanka can jump over England and Pakistan in ODI rankings: ICC

Dubai, Jan.19 (ANI): Sri Lanka will move up two places to fifth in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table if it beats Pakistan in all three ODIs coming up in Karachi and Lahore.

According to an ICC media release, Mahela Jayawardena’s team currently lies in seventh position following a tour of mixed results in Bangladesh. In a tri-series that also involved Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka lost one match to the home side but later exacted revenge in what was a thrilling and closely fought final.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is in Karachi for the first ODI that takes place on January 20, knowing that a 3-0 result in the series will ensure it leap-frogs both Shoaib Malik’s men and also sixth-placed England.

However, the reverse result would relegate Sri Lanka from its current tally of 105 ratings points to 102 which would still be significantly ahead of eighth-placed West Indies, which has 91 points to its name at present.

Victory for Pakistan in the series will ensure it keeps the pressure on India and a 3-0 win for Shoaib will put his team within one point of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side.

The Bangladesh v Zimbabwe series is underway today (19 January) in Dhaka with the visiting team hoping to move past Ireland into 10th place in the ODI Championship. To do this it needs to win the series 2-1 or 3-0 while a 1-2 defeat will still gain it one ratings point but that would not be enough to overtake the Irish.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Nathan Bracken has slipped below Daniel Vettori at the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers after the first two ODIs against South Africa. Kyle Mills has received a similar boost as his captain meaning New Zealand can now boast two bowlers in the top three.

In the two games so far, Bracken has taken one wicket at an average of 87.00 and that was enough to let the Black Caps’ skipper back to top spot.

The two left-armed trans-Tasman rivals have been trading places for some weeks now and with three ODIs still remaining in the current series, not to mention five coming up between Australia and New Zealand next month, there is no sign of an end to that yo-yoing just yet.

Mills has benefited from the fact that Muttiah Muralidaran of Sri Lanka and Australia’s Mitchell Johnson have fallen back. Murali was not his usual dominant self in Bangladesh, taking four wickets in three matches, while Johnson was not in the Australia ODI squad for the first two matches of the South Africa series.

There is better news, however, for Murali’s spin partner Ajantha Mendis. The winner of Emerging Player of the Year 2008 at the LG ICC Awards has taken another leap and broken into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

His seven wickets, taken at an impressive average of 10.85, have gained him nine places in the rankings to joint-16th position, level with West Indies’ Daren Powell.

Of course, it was a competitive tri-series for host team Bangladesh as the home side beat Sri Lanka on one occasion and almost did so again in the final.

The main beneficiary of Bangladesh’s success was Shakib Al Hasan, who has broken into the top five in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders. The 21-year-old scored 153 runs in the series at an average of 76.50 and a strike-rate of better than a run a ball while also managing to collect five wickets for 69 runs at an average of 13.80 and an economy-rate of just 2.65.

That effort has gained him three places in the all-rounders’ list, putting him above Jacques Kallis of South Africa and Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik but still behind Jacob Oram of New Zealand in first place and England’s Andrew Flintoff second. He has also moved up 10 places to 34th in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen.

Speaking of the batting rankings, Ricky Ponting has gained one place to sixth in the list while Kallis has gained three places to 13th spot. India’s Sachin Tendulkar is up one place to 11th position.

The news is not so good for Michael Hussey, who drops one place to fourth with Shivnarine Chanderpaul benefiting from his misfortune. Also, Protea Herschelle Gibbs has fallen three places to 18th position.

A notable big mover in the latest batting chart is Australia opener Shaun Marsh, whose innings of 79 and 78 in the first ODIs of the series have earned him 31 places and he now sits in 32nd position, nicely poised for further gains if his impressive form holds. (ANI)

Special strategy to tackle Mendis, says Malik

Karachi, Jan.18 (ANI): Pakistan is fully prepared and raring to face Sri Lanka in the upcoming series, Captain Shoaib Malik has said.

Malik said the team has a definite strategy in place for the islanders for the nextthree-match One-day tournament commencing next week.

Commenting on the world-class spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, he said that his squad is fully ready to tackle the Lanka bowlers, and they have a comprehensive strategy to combat Mendis’s mysterious ‘carrom ball.’

“We have faced Murali on several occasions in the past and most of our batsmen have done well against him,” he said adding “Mendis is a relatively new bowler and we have prepared a strategy to tackle him.”

He hoped that the series would be exciting one with some close games between the two sides.

“Sri Lanka is one of the best teams in the world and the series is definitely going to be an interesting one,”the Nation quoted Malik, as saying.

He stressed that taking lead in the series will be important as the series has only three games.

“It’s a short series and winning the first match is going to be crucial in it,” Malik said.

About the services of Shoaib Akhtar, he said : “Akhtar is fully fit and is itching to take the field against Sri Lanka.”(ANI)
