Don’t hear case against Adnan until June 10, HC to family court

Mumbai, May 29 — Pakistani singer-composer Adnan Sami has got a reprieve until June 10 in the domestic violence application filed by his estranged wife Saba Galadari before a family court. A vacation bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday restrained the family court from proceeding with the hearing in Galadari’s applications. The vacation bench of Justice S J Kathawala and Justice R G Ketkar gave Sami time so that he could either approach the Supreme Court or appear before the family court on June 7. While refusing to give him six weeks’ time, the high court observed: “No case is made out to place any sickness of appellate [Sami] prior to May 3.” However, the judges felt that Sami should be given time considering he had undergone a gall bladder surgery on May 23. Asking Sami to appear before family court on June 7, the HC has asked the family court not to proceed with the hearing before June 10 in his absence. The family court had last year held that Galadari’s divorce petition could not be entertained because her second marriage with Sami was invalid. The HC reversed this ruling in March, but gave Sami six weeks to file an appeal. However, Sami, who has been admitted to a hospital in Munich after suffering from severe abdominal pain, filed an application in the high court seeking extension of the deadline. His advocate Vibhav Krishna said they could not approach the Supreme Court as Sami fell ill. “He has been admitted in a hospital in Munich and a surgery was performed to remove five stones from his gall bladder,” said Krishna. He informed the court that his client will return to Mumbai by June 3.

Sami claimed his second marriage to Galadari was not valid because she had failed to comply with halala, in which she was required to have married another man before remarrying Sami.

Bono’s back surgery forces U2 to axe Glastonbury gig

London, May 26 (ANI): U2 rockers have postponed their entire North American tour and cancelled their appearance at Glastonbury following Bono’s emergency back surgery.

The 50-year-old singer was taken to a hospital in Germany on Friday after he complained of suffering “severe pain” and “partial paralysis” during rehearsals for their 360 Degree world tour in Munich, reports The Daily Express.

He underwent a surgery immediately after neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn was convinced that he will make a full recovery but will need at least two months rest.

“He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg. The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis,” said neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn.

“Bono is now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit. His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation,” he added.

The band have also been forced to cancel their prestigious headlining appearance at Glastonbury on 25 June (10).

Bono admits he is shattered to let his fans down.

He says, “I”m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special.” (ANI)

Hitler’s dreams of creating “Fuhrermuseum” containing stolen artworks revealed

Cleveland, May 20(ANI): A photo album detailing plans of a Nazi super museum consisting of thousands of stolen artworks has been discovered in the United States.

According to reports, Hitler envisioned a “Fuhrermuseum” rivalling those in Dresden and Munich, and had helped draw up architectural plans, which eventually grew to include a theatre, an opera house and a hotel.

An amateur history buff, Robert Edsel, spotted the album after he visited the house of a U.S. GI, who had taken it as a memento from Hitler’s home in Berchtesgaden in 1945.

It is claimed that the album is one of the 31 albums presented to Hitler in the 1940’s.

However, U.S. GI John Pistone, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio, said that he had never known the significance of the album titled “Picture Gallery Linz XIII”.

“It was just a book full of pictures of old paintings to me. I just wanted something that proved I had been on Hitler’s mountain,” The Telegraph quoted Pistone, as saying.

Pistone’s album contains reproductions of 19th-century German and Austrian pictures, the art Hitler had admired most. It also has photographs that show him working on plans for his museum, while a model of Linz was moved to his bunker in Berlin. (ANI)

FIFA match related stress could cause heart attack

London, May 3 (ANI): Football match related stress could trigger off a heart attack say doctors, especially during this year’s World Cup.

Ardent football followers get so excited while watching the match that the overexertion could lead to a cardiac arrest.

The stress factor is not just because of the outcome of the match but also due to the nail-biting moments during the match.

German Doctor Ute Wilbert-Lampen studied 4,279 heart attacks in or around Munich after the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

“The result is not important. Rather, the vital factor is how stressful and tense the match is,” she told Daily Star.

Professor Hoosen Vawda, of the South African KwaZulu-Natal University, told fans to stay detached at the FIFA World Cup tournament, which kicks off on June 11.

“The event is meant to be enjoyed in the spirit of sportsmanship, not to die for,” he advised. (ANI)

‘Dear Uncle Adolf’: documentary details fan letters sent to Hitler

London, Apr.26 (ANI): A new documentary has detailed tens of thousands of surviving letters fans sent to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler during the Second World War.

‘Dear Uncle Adolf’ is said to be the first documentary detailing these letters that lay undiscovered in Russian archives till 2007.

On discovery, they formed the basis of a German book called ‘Letters to Hitler’.

Last night, according to The Telegraph, Austrian-born Hitler’s grip over Germany was unveiled as actors read out the letters.

They were letters that often accompanied gifts, in the case of Margarethe Wagner, a pair of socks sent in 1938 after Hitler occupied the Czech Sudetenland border region.

“I knitted these for you as you freed us,” she wrote.

Frau Troeltzsch of Berlin was another fan. She sent Hitler three silk handkerchiefs with pictures of Hitler sewn into them which Hitler deputy Rudolf Hess sent back saying “you do not have permission to send handkerchiefs with pictures of Herr Hitler!”

Such women were later put under Gestapo monitoring as Hitler feared that his cult of personality could lead to a destabilisation of home life in the Reich.

As he climbed further up the ladder of power, so the tempo of the letters increased.

So large was Hitler’s fan following that a special department was created in the postal services in both Munich and Berlin to deal with the tsunami of paper wending its way to him every day. (ANI)

Ash cloud set to close Frankfurt Airport

Germany’s main airport in Frankfurt will probably have to close on Friday given the dangers posed by clouds of volcanic ash from Iceland, air traffic controllers said.

While all major airports in northern Germany — Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Muenster, Osnabrueck, Duesseldorf, Berlin and Cologne — remained closed until further notice, arriving flights were still likely to reach airports such as Munich in southern Germany, they said.

Frankfurt Airport is operated by Fraport and is a major hub for Lufthansa.

Rooney could make surprise return against Bayern – report

Wayne Rooney could make a surprise return to the Manchester United team to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, British media reported on Monday.

The talismanic England striker suffered ankle ligament damage in last Tuesday’s first leg in Munich which Bayern won 2-1.

However, according to sources close to the club, Rooney has made a much quicker recovery than expected and has the chance of playing despite manager Alex Ferguson ruling him out for “two to three weeks” last Friday.

United expect Rooney back for the derby game against Manchester City on April 17, but Ferguson could have him back sooner.

“Rooney hope of shock return against Bayern,” read a headline in the Daily Telegraph, while the Daily Mail said “United test Wayne for Bayern comeback.”

Last week the nation held its breath with Rooney sustaining the injury so close to the World Cup which starts in South Africa on June 11, but although he left Munich on crutches and with his foot in a protective plastic boot, he has made good progress on a water treadmill and an exercise bike.

The England striker has been in top form this season, netting 34 times and Fabio Capello’s side are counting on him for the World Cup finals.

The 24-year-old had scored United’s goal in the second minute against Bayern but was left writhing on the pitch in stoppage time, seconds before Ivica Olic scored Bayern’s winner.

Man U wants Berbatov to fill void left by Rooney

London, Apr 1 (ANI): Manchester United will be backing Dimitar Berbatov to fill the goals void left by ace striker Wayne Rooney’s injury.

Manchester United is set to be without Rooney for up to a month after the striker sprained his right ankle in Munich.

Reds defender Nemanja Vidic has backed Bulgarian Berbatov to step up his game and fill Rooney’s void.

“We know Wayne is unbelievable. He scored again against Bayern and had another chance, he is one of the best in the world. But Berba showed what he could do at Bolton. He had a great game,” The Sun quoted Vidic, as saying.

“Also this season we have shown we play as a team. We need to believe in ourselves and believe in each other,” he said.

With Michael Owen out for the season with a torn hamstring, Berbatov, 29, is United’s only fit recognised striker.

If United are to stay ahead of their big rivals in the title race and progress in Europe by beating Bayern in Wednesday’s return leg, they will have to play a lot better than they did on Tuesday night, the paper reports.

Rooney put United ahead after just 66 seconds yet they were over-run after that and went down 2-1 to Ivica Olic’s injury-time goal. (ANI)

Man U players have hit best form at right time: Ferguson

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has pumped up his players by saying that they have hit their best form at the right time.

Ferguson prepares for the two Champions League quarter-final legs against old rivals Bayern Munich and the potential Premier League title decider against Chelsea.

Commenting on United’s form, which has seen them win their past seven games and rattle in 19 goals, Ferguson said: “This is a massive week for us; eight days and we have two big matches against Bayern and a great game against Chelsea and we are in our best form of the season.”

“You have to enjoy it and at the same time know it’s crucial. A mistake? You hope you don’t make any mistakes and hope they will happen to your opponents,” The Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

“We got that on Saturday and after that played exceptionally well. It’s going to be an exciting week. The return of Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar has made a big difference, as the back four has been solid again.

“It wasn’t easy and we were very fragile but you can see the solidity and experience now and it’s making a massive difference. It’s as the saying goes – strong at the back, strong as a team,” Ferguson said

Ferguson hopes United can continue a Champions League run of 17 unbeaten away games and score tonight.

“Scoring away from home in Europe is without doubt a big advantage and we must try to do that,” he said. (ANI)

Pope under fire for allowing paedophile priest to continue as minister

Rome, Mar. 13 (ANI): With the emergence of reports that Pope Benedict allowed a paedophile priest to continue with the ministry, the Bishop of Rome has been drawn directly into the Roman Catholic sex abuse scandal.

The priest, who was convicted of child abuse, was sent from Essen to Munich for therapy in 1980 on the approval of the Pope, who was then a cardinal, The Times reports.

In 1986, the paedophile cleric, recognized as H, was given an 18-month suspended jail sentence and fined DM 4,000 (1,800 pounds today).

According to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, there had been no complaints against H during the therapy at a church community in Munich.

It added that the decision to let him continue working in Grafing was taken by Gerhard Gruber, now 81, who was vicar general of the archdiocese.

An American group, Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, said: “It boggles the mind to hear a German Catholic official claim that a credibly accused paedophile priest was reassigned to parish work without the knowledge of his boss, then-Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger.”

However, Gruber was quoted by the paper as saying that the Pope was not aware of his decision because there were 1,000 priests in the diocese at the time and he had left many decisions to lower-level officials.

“The repeated employment of H in pastoral duties was a serious mistake … I deeply regret that this decision led to offences against youths. I apologise to all those who were harmed,” he said.

He did not indicate whether the convicted paedophile would be allowed to continue working in the church.

Any expulsion of a priest from the Church, however, must go through the Vatican. (ANI)

Urine LAM-ELISA not effective as independent diagnostic test for pulmonary TB

Washington, August 28 (ANI): A trial of the new diagnostic urine LAM-ELISA has indicated that it may not be useful as an independent diagnostic test for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

Detailed in the open access journal BMC Infectious Diseases, the results suggest that it was only capable of identifying 50.7 per cent of TB cases.

Klaus Reither led a team of researchers from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany, the University College London, UK, and the NIMR-Mbeya Medical Research Programme, Tanzania, who tested LAM-ELISA in 291 Tanzanian patients suspected of having TB.

He said: “Only 35 out of 69 pulmonary TB cases, confirmed by smear microscopy and/or solid culture and/or liquid culture, showed at least one positive LAM-ELISA result. This 50.7 per cent sensitivity of the LAM-ELISA was disappointingly low. The specificity of 87.8 % also fell far short of expectations.”

The LAM-ELISA detects lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a mycobacterium-specific lipopolysaccharide component of the bacilli’s cell wall.

In active mycobacterial disease, LAM is released into the blood and passes the renal barrier without major changes – suggesting that its detection in urine should be a reliable diagnostic indicator.

Urine can be easily obtained, and its collection is often more culturally accepted than the collection of sputum or blood samples.

The LAM-ELISA might not have fulfilled the requirements for a stand-alone diagnostic test for pulmonary tuberculosis, but the researchers speculate that it may still be of some use.

“In our opinion, further investigations are needed to elucidate if the LAM-ELISA, in this stage of development, is valuable as a supplemental tool for the diagnosis of HIV-associated TB. This seems particularly important, when taking into consideration that TB is one of the most important opportunistic infections of HIV patients and that the sensitivity of smear microscopy in immunocompromised patients is low,” they say. Image of different regions of Trifid Nebula captured by European Southern Observatory

Munich, August 27 (ANI): A new image by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has captured the different regions of the Trifid Nebula, which is a rare combination of three nebula types, as seen in visible light.

This massive star factory is so named for the dark dust bands that trisect its glowing heart, revealing the fury of freshly formed stars and presaging more star birth.

Smoldering several thousand light-years away in the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer), the Trifid Nebula presents a compelling portrait of the early stages of a star’s life, from gestation to first light.

The heat and “winds” of newly ignited, volatile stars stir the Trifid’s gas and dust-filled cauldron.

In time, the dark tendrils of matter strewn throughout the area will themselves collapse and form new stars.

The French astronomer Charles Messier first observed the Trifid Nebula in June 1764, recording the hazy, glowing object as entry number 20 in his renowned catalogue.

Observations made about 60 years later by John Herschel of the dust lanes that appear to divide the cosmic cloud into three lobes inspired the English astronomer to coin the name “Trifid”.

Made with the Wide-Field Imager camera attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in northern Chile, the new image prominently displays the different regions of the Trifid Nebula as seen in visible light.

In the bluish patch to the upper left of the image, called a reflection nebula, gas scatters the light from nearby, Trifid-born stars.

The largest of these stars shines most brightly in the hot, blue portion of the visible spectrum.

This, along with the fact that dust grains and molecules scatter blue light more efficiently than red light, imbues this portion of the Trifid Nebula with an azure hue.

Below, in the round, pink-reddish area typical of an emission nebula, the gas at the Trifid’s core is heated by hundreds of scorching young stars until it emits the red signature light of hydrogen, the major component of the gas, just as hot neon gas glows red-orange in illuminated signs all over the world.

The gases and dust that crisscross the Trifid Nebula make up the third kind of nebula in this cosmic cloud, known as dark nebulae, courtesy of their light-obscuring effects.

Within these dark lanes, the remnants of previous star birth episodes continue to coalesce under gravity’s inexorable attraction.

The rising density, pressure and temperature inside these gaseous blobs will eventually trigger nuclear fusion, and yet more stars will form. (ANI)

Injured Hargreaves in Germany to save Man U career

London, Aug.9 (ANI): Owen Hargreaves has secretly flown to Germany in a bid to save his Manchester United career.

According to The Sun, the England midfielder, 27, has been having treatment all week at the Munich clinic of top knee specialist Dr Hans Muller-Wolfahrt.

Hargreaves went to Munich after his latest setback and, although Sir Alex Ferguson said Hargreaves would return in ‘two to three weeks’, Muller-Wolfahrt told the player it could take six months.

Hargreaves, who had been at Dr Richard Steadman’s surgery in Colorado, is expected to fly back to America this week for more rehabilitation.

The England star has not played for United since the 1-1 draw at Chelsea on September 21 2008. (ANI)

Man U targets Milan striker Ibrahimovic

London, July 9 (ANI): Manchester United is looking to rope in Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after missing out on several top signings.

Left with limited options after Lyon striker Karim Benzema opted to join Real Madrid and Bayern Munich striker Franck Ribery revealed his desire to play in the La Liga, The Mirror said coach Alex Ferguson is desperate for a replacement for Winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fergie has admitted that he has analysed the Swede international on several occasions, and was impressed by his style.

Inter is, however, would be reluctant to sell Ibrahimovic, who is worth 30 million pounds and has twice been voted Serie A Player of the Year. (ANI)

Omega Nebula’s ‘watercolors’ revealed in new image

Munich, July 8 (ANI): A new image captured by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has reveled the Omega Nebula, a stellar nursery where infant stars illuminate and sculpt a vast pastel fantasy of dust and gas, in all its glory.

The Omega Nebula, sometimes called the Swan Nebula, is a dazzling stellar nursery located about 5500 light-years away towards the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer).

An active star-forming region of gas and dust about 15 light-years across, the nebula has recently spawned a cluster of massive, hot stars.

The intense light and strong winds from these hulking infants have carved remarkable filigree structures in the gas and dust.

When seen through a small telescope, the nebula has a shape that reminds some observers of the final letter of the Greek alphabet, omega, while others see a swan with its distinctive long, curved neck.

Swiss astronomer Jean-Philippe Loys de Cheseaux discovered the nebula around 1745. The French comet hunter Charles Messier independently rediscovered it about twenty years later and included it as number 17 in his famous catalogue.

In a small telescope, the Omega Nebula appears as an enigmatic ghostly bar of light set against the star fields of the Milky Way.

In recent years, astronomers have discovered that the Omega Nebula is one of the youngest and most massive star-forming regions in the Milky Way.

Active star-birth started a few million years ago and continues through today.

The newly released image, obtained with the EMMI instrument attached to the ESO 3.58-metre New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile, shows the central region of the Omega Nebula in exquisite detail.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has also imaged small parts of this nebula.

At the left of the image, a huge and strangely box-shaped cloud of dust covers the glowing gas.

The fascinating palette of subtle color shades across the image comes from the presence of different gases (mostly hydrogen, but also oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur) that are glowing under the fierce ultraviolet light radiated by the hot young stars. (ANI)

Real Madrid’s 55 million pounds bid for Franck Ribery

Madrid, July 5 (ANI): Spanish football giant Real Madrid’s astonishing summer of transfer window continued with a 55 million pounds offer for Bayern Munich mid-fielder Franck Ribery.

The Los Galacticos have offered Dutch stars Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder in exchange for Ribery, which amounts to 40 million pounds. The rest of the amount is supposed to be paid in cash, the Daily Star reports.

Ribery has also been the primary target of Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

But his first choice, if he leaves Germany, is to join the latest team of Real Madrid.

According to reports, Real Madrid has so far spent about 182 million pounds on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, and Raul Albiol.

Real has also been in talks with Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, whom they have offered a 20 million poinds contract. (ANI)

Scientists invent world’s fastest and most sensitive astronomical camera

Munich, June 19 (ANI): Scientists have invented the world’s fastest and most sensitive astronomical camera that can take 1500 finely exposed images per second even when observing extremely faint objects.

The first 240×240 pixel images with the world’s fastest high precision faint light camera were obtained through a collaborative effort between ESO and three French laboratories from the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique/Institut National des Sciences de l’Univers (CNRS/INSU).

Cameras such as this are key components of the next generation of adaptive optics instruments of Europe’s ground-based astronomy flagship facility, the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT).

“The performance of this breakthrough camera is without an equivalent anywhere in the world. The camera will enable great leaps forward in many areas of the study of the Universe,” said Norbert Hubin, head of the Adaptive Optics department at ESO.

OCam will be part of the second-generation VLT instrument SPHERE. To be installed in 2011, SPHERE will take images of giant exoplanets orbiting nearby stars.

A fast camera such as this is needed as an essential component for the modern adaptive optics instruments used on the largest ground-based telescopes.

Telescopes on the ground suffer from the blurring effect induced by atmospheric turbulence.

This turbulence causes the stars to twinkle in a way that delights poets, but frustrates astronomers, since it blurs the finest details of the images.

Adaptive optics techniques overcome this major drawback, so that ground-based telescopes can produce images that are as sharp as if taken from space.

The new generation instruments require these corrections to be done at an even higher rate, more than one thousand times a second, and this is where OCam is essential.

Cameras normally used for very high frame-rate movies require extremely powerful illumination, which is of course not an option for astronomical cameras.

OCam and its CCD220 detector, developed by the British manufacturer e2v technologies, solve this dilemma, by being not only the fastest available, but also very sensitive, making a significant jump in performance for such cameras.

Because of imperfect operation of any physical electronic devices, a CCD camera suffers from so-called readout noise.

OCam has a readout noise ten times smaller than the detectors currently used on the VLT, making it much more sensitive and able to take pictures of the faintest of sources. (ANI)

South Korea has world’s best airport, Hong Kong comes second: Survey

HONG KONG: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has been named the world’s best by travellers, snatching the title from Hong Kong, which won the award in seven of the past eight years, a survey published on Wednesday showed.

Hong Kong International Airport ranked second while Singapore’s Changi Airport was third in the annual survey by British-based aviation research specialist Skytrax.

The survey, published in London late Tuesday, covered 190 airports and questioned 8.6 million passengers about 39 aspects of their airport experience from check-in to departure.

A Skytrax spokesman said the margin between the three top airports was the smallest ever in the survey’s 11-year history and at one point it looked as though there was going to be a dead-heat between the three.

Zurich’s airport emerged fourth in the airport top 10, followed by Munich and Japan’s Kansai. Kuala Lumpur was awarded seventh place, followed by Amsterdam; Centrair in Nagoya, Japan; and New Zealand’s Auckland airport in 10th place.

In the individual categories, Hong Kong was voted top in airport dining, Kuala Lumpur won the best immigration service title and Singapore won best leisure amenities.

Incheon outside Seoul was named the best in security processing, terminal cleanliness and easiest transit categories.

Chelsea bid for Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery

London, May 28 (ANI): Chelsea is locked in talks to sign Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery for 43-million pounds.

According to The Sun, the two clubs are believed to have agreed to the fee and Blues are now thrashing out terms with the 26-year-old French international midfielder.

Ribery is holding out for a bumper 125,000-pound-a-week salary after tax, but Chelsea are reluctant to offer more than 90,000-pounds-a-week.

If the Londoners do close the deal it will be a bitter blow to Premier League rivals Manchester United, who have long wanted the Frenchman as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.ullback Patrice Evra revealed in The Sun that he was hoping to persuade Ribery to join United. (ANI)
