Nitish promises clean water in fluoride-hit village

Haveli Kharagpur, June 6 — For most people in Bihar, Khaira never existed. Until fluorosis struck this village in Munger district in 1987.

Little has changed for some 5,000 inhabitants of impoverished Khaira, sited 200 km southeast of state capital Patna, since. Except, perhaps, for the number of people crippled – there’s at least one in every family – due to the intake of fluoride-contaminated water.

But on Saturday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar vowed to make a difference by ensuring clean, piped drinking water for the villagers. Khaira, peopled by Dalits and those belonging to extremely backward classes, was one of Kumar’s stops during the fifth leg of his Vishwas Yatra.

He had conceived the yatra (march) to earn the confidence of the people. “The sight of such sufferings has deeply saddened me,” Kumar said as he walked to the red brick Buniyaadi School with a posse of officials.

The weather – it was hot and humid – didn’t slacken Kumar’s pace as he headed to a room where some 60 fluorosis-affected villagers had gathered to meet him. Only a couple of them could manage to stand straight.

Each of them had brought a rose, as if to thank the government for forgetting them. Kumar, touched by the gesture, was close to tears when the middle-aged Maheswar Prasad related his suffering.

“Prasad was fine two months ago. He suddenly fell ill, his body bloated like a balloon, and his legs caved in.

We petitioned the officials concerned seeking water purifiers, but in vain,” said fellow villager Dhirendra Kumar Sah. Sah’s 11-year-old daughter is also a victim of fluorosis.

He rued that the fluoride factor was preventing the youths of the village from getting married. “Matchmakers avoid our village like the plague,” he added.

The CM then surveyed a hand pump fitted with a filtration unit. He asked a local if the cylinder in the filtration unit was being replaced regularly.

A negative reply made him grill Public Health Engineering Department Principal Secretary Ravindra Pawar, who had accompanied him. Kumar subsequently directed officials to put up boards warning villagers not to drink contaminated water.

“Ensure that it is done,” he said before heading to a solar filtration plant

BJP blames Congress Party for influencing EC over repolling in Bihar

New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday alleged and criticised Congress party for influencing the Election Commission office to send a team to Bihar to discuss the prospects of re-polls in six constituencies of the State.

The Election Commission on Friday decided to send teams to Bihar to look into complaints of poll irregularities received during the Lok Sabha elections.

After meeting the Chief Election Commission in the national capital today, Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra told media that in the history of independent India no re-poll had ever taken place after 25 days of Polls. If it happens, it would actually hamper the fairness of Indian democratic elections.

Malhotra termed such a consideration of re-polling as an instance of the Election Commission being influenced by the ruling party. He alleged that Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad and member of the UPA combine was feeling insecure about his political position in Bihar and hence the team has been sent to Bihar.

“The team was sent because of Lalu Prasad pressurising the Congress, as he feels he would be losing on two seats. Lalu did not attend the Cabinet meeting yesterday also. We said that if re-poll is to take place, it should have been two to three days later after polling but it hasn’t even happened after 25 days. No such committee (team to visit the state) was made in the past. If re-poll happens, then in future there wouldn’t be fair elections and it is of serious concern to us,” Malhotra said.

Lalu Prasad had recently alleged electoral malpractices in Bihar by his rival Rajiv Pratap Rudy of the BJP and the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) state government of Bihar.

The Election Commission teams would visit Saran Lok Sabha constituency, from where Lalu Prasad contested and Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Jamui, Maharajganj, Munger and Gaya. (ANI)

Lalu Prasad alleges rigging in third phase of elections

Patna, May 1 (ANI): Railways Minister Lalu Prasad has alleged that voting was rigged in Bihar in the third phase on Thursday.

Eleven out of Bihar’s 40 constituencies went to polls in the third phase of parliamentary elections.

“We have information of voting turnout between 25-55 per cent. In Badhaiya block of Munger district, there have been reports of rigging in. We have tried to contact the observers there and also the Senior Superintendent of Police,” said Lalu.

Munger, Banka and Kishanganj districts are considered to be pivotal constituencies for Lalu’s rival and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party, Janata Dal United.

Meanwhile, Shekhar Suman, actor-turned-politician and a candidate of the Congress Party campaigned in Patna Sahib of Bihar from where he is contesting.

Suman’s son, Bollywood actor Adhyayan Suman along with wife Alka Suman, also campaigned for the actor.

“I have told them that I haven’t come here to play politics as I could have done it being in a different party which could have easily given me a winning seat,” said Suman.

Patna votes in the fourth phase on May 7.

There is a three-cornered contest involving Suman, another former Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha on Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ticket and RJD’s Vijay Sahu.

The remaining fourth and last round of polls in Bihar will be held for three seats on May 7. The first and second phases in 13 seats each were held on April 16 and April 23.

Lalu will be behind bars if NDA comes to power

Patna, Apr 26 (ANI): Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Rajeev Ranjan alias Lalan Singh on Sunday said if voted to power, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government would send Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad in jail for his involvement in the multi-million rupee fodder scam.

“Lalu’s days of enjoying power are over. He should now be ready to face the hard reality of jail,” Ranjan said at an election rally in Munger.

Ranjan further said that Lalu had managed to suppress the cases against him in the fodder scam with the help of the Congress.

“Lalu Prasad would now be ousted from the Centre in the same way he was ousted from Bihar in 2005,” Ranjan added. (ANI)

Lalu Yadav slams Bihar Govt. for failure in ensuring railway security

Patna, Mar 1 (ANI): Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has severely criticised the early morning Naxal attacks on two railway stations in Bihar which led to the disruption of train services on the Patna-Howrah main line for more than seven hours on Sunday.

He slammed the Nitish Kumar-led NDA Government for its failure to protect railway property from attacks by Maoists.

“The Railways are the lifeline of the country and we cannot protect every inch of the tracks. It is the duty of the state to ensure the safety of lakhs of people who travel by train every day and the Nitish Kumar Government has failed in it,” Lalu said.

Naxals had attacked the Bhalui railway station between Keul and Jamui on the Danapur-Howrah main line in Bihar early this morning.

Another railway station at Ratnapur on the on Keul-Bhagalpur line near the West Bengal border was also set afire by around 100 Naxals.

The blast uprooted the tracks and damaged the overhead traction wires, Chief Public Relations Officer of East Central Railway A K Chandra said.
There have been regular incidents of violence in the state, following the 24- hour Bihar-Jharkhand-Orissa-West Bengal strike called by CPI (Maoist) on Saturday.

While a BSNL mobile tower was damaged in Aurangabad district, another mobile tower of a private service provider was damaged in Rohtas district yesterday.

In another incident in Munger, a Maoist group beat up the station master of Ratanpur on Kiul-Bhagalpur section at Saturday midnight and set ablaze a portion of the station building.
The track-changing panel and documents in the cabin of station master Lalit Kumar were gutted in the fire, Railway sources said.(ANI)
