India’s Ashis Roy completes 104th marathon

Washington, June 6 (IANS) Running his third marathon in 33 days, India’s grand old marathon man Ashis Roy has completed his 104th marathon finishing the Sunburst Marathon in South Bend, Indiana, in pouring rain.

Roy, who turned 78 June 1, finished the 26.2 mile run through South Bend town and along St Joseph River Saturday in 6 hours and 43 minutes – four minutes more than his last run in Bob Potts Heritage Rail Trail Marathon in York, Pennsylvania two weeks ago.

It was pretty hot when the race started at 6 a.m. but he still managed to complete the first half in a comfortable 3 hours and 15 minutes, but around the 19th mile on the return run it started raining heavily slowing him down a bit.

The veteran Indian runner, who completed his 100th marathon in Mumbai Jan 17, has no plans to hang his boots yet. ‘I want to keep running to show to the world that Indians too can do well in sports,’ Roy, the oldest of 840 participants told IANS on phone.

Amazed that he was still running at 78, a few came up to him and said: ‘You are a superman’. ‘It was a grand feeling,’ said Roy.

Another reason that keeps him going is: ‘I want to tell the sports authorities in India that they should not restrict sports to youth only. But it should be open to all.’

Roy, who has penned a book on ‘Joy of Running’ is listed in the Limca Book of Records, and has, to date, competed in 37 marathons in India and 67 marathons in 20 other countries, including the International Veterans Marathon in Athens in 1986.

Roy, a resident of New Delhi, began running marathons at the age of 52 when he retired as a cardiologist with the Indian Air Force.

Local students to get priority in medical courses in Maha

Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) Maharashtra Government is considering giving priority to local students seeking admissions to degree and post graduate courses in Government-run medical colleges. “We have mooted a proposal giving priority to the students domiciled in Maharashtra for graduate and PG courses in the Government-run medical colleges,” Medical Education Minister Vijaykumar Gavit told PTI. The reason to withdraw all-India quota is that only 120 students from Maharashtra get admissions in colleges in other states annually for MBBS course, while other states get 960 seats in exchange, an official from Medical Education department claimed.

There are 84 seats for 18 super speciality courses, including cardiology, nephrology, plastic surgery and urology in the state. Gavit has also proposed that the internship period for which students serve the state should be made two years and the bond amount be increased from Rs 25 lakh to Rs two crore if they fail to do so.

CR clears coach from accident site

Mumbai, May 29 — A day after Hindustan Times reported that the Central Railway had not cleared the site of a railway accident that had occurred more than six months ago, one of the coaches that was lying precariously close to the railway line was moved. On Monday, May 24, Hindustan Times had reported that 11 coaches of the Bangalore-bound 6505 Down Gandhidham-Bengaluru Express that had derailed between Bhiwandi Road and Kopar stations in November 2009 were still lying at the same site.

One of the derailed air-conditioned coaches had been placed on wooden blocks very close to the tracks on a curve on the Diva-Vasai section of Central Railway’s Mumbai division. The coach was removed on Tuesday.

“It is not correct to say that the Central Railway has not bothered to correct the accident site. In fact, of the 11 coaches, ten coaches have been removed so far,” a Central Railway spokesperson said requesting anonymity.

“The other coach will be soon removed. The coach that is now lying at the accident site is at a sufficiently safe distance from the running track.

” When HT visited the site on Thursday, one coach was still there. A few wheels, batteries and technical equipment were strewn around.

“There is no confusion regarding the authority on who will clear these coaches,” the spokesperson said referring to some railway officials’ statements that since the coaches belong to the South Western Railway, the decision on what needs to be done with the coaches lies with them.

Train indicators must have Marathi: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, May 29 — The Shiv Sena has threatened to vandalise railway stations in Mumbai, if train indicators do not display information in Marathi. The Central Railway has assured the Sena that it will work on a solution to introduce indicators in the local language soon.

On Wednesday, a delegation led by Sena leader Anil Desai met CR officials at Mumbai CST, requesting them to make the change. “Marathi should be added to the existing indicator system.

We have warned the railway administration that if they do not do so, the Shiv Sena will start a campaign,” Desai said. “There are lakhs of commuters from rural areas, who come to Mumbai and other places and Marathi is the only language they know,” he said.

Sena sources said the delegation had aimed to meet the divisional manager but could only get an audience with another official. “We spoke to the manager on the phone, and also to the company that maintains and operates indicators at the station.

We were assured that Marathi will soon be incorporated,” a Sena leader said. Railway officials said they have introduced a three-language formula wherever possible, and certain practical problems such as space constraints and technical issues need to be sorted out.

Desai said CR has intentionally ignored the Marathi language despite general recommendations that signs at government and semi-government offices in Maharashtra include all three languages, English, Hindi and Marathi. The Shiv Sena and the MNS have been involved in a battle of one-upmanship to woo the Marathi manoos.

Wadala police face heat over kidnappings

Mumbai, May 29 — More than 250 locals surrounded Wadala police station on Friday to protest police inaction in the kidnap of two minor girls 20 days ago. Firoz A, one of the girls’ father said 20 days ago, his 14-year-old daughter and her 15-year-old friend went missing from their respective houses. “We lodged a missing complaint at Wadala police station but when the police enquired in the area and found two local boys also missing, they registered a case of kidnapping against the two 22-year-old boys,” said Firoz. “The police investigated and found the four were in Uttar Pradesh. A police team went there to arrest the boys and bring back our girls but returned empty-handed,” he said at the police station, where he was present with the locals. “It’s hard to believe a police team went to UP but couldn’t even get pictures of the boys. I’m afraid that if the police do not arrest the boys soon, they will kill my daughter and her friend, Ruchi Sharma,” he said. “If the children have eloped, the police should at least tell us,” he added. The alleged kidnappers, identified as Mumtaz (22) and Parvez (23), lived in the same area as the girls and worked as daily wage labourers. Vilas Shinde, senior police inspector at Wadala police station, said the couples had eloped and the girls had taken cash and jewellery from their houses, and said police are charging them with kidnapping because they are minors.

Asked about fresh efforts to locate the girls, Shinde said: “We’ve sent messages to police stations in the neighbouring areas of UP. In Mumbai too, we’ve sent wireless messages to all police stations, railway stations and bus stands.”

Wedding party goes into mourning

Mumbai, May 29 — The Guptas were in the mood to celebrate. There was a wedding in the family on Monday and the family was busy with last minute preparations. Until they received the news of the death of two family members in the train derailment in West Bengal on Friday. Prema Gupta (45) and Harekrishna Gupta (23), who were coming to the city to attend the wedding, died in the accident, which is suspected to be the handiwork of Maoists. Jairam Gupta (30), Harekrishna’s brother, reached Kurla terminus on Friday morning, soon after he heard about the incident. His relatives from Howrah, his native place, had called to inform him. Prema is Jairam’s sister’s mother-in-law. “Every one was waiting for their arrival, so that we could celebrate the wedding with greater enthusiasm,” said Gupta, who was trying hard to maintain his composure while he organised air tickets to fly to Kolkata and get to the accident spot. But tears flowed down his cheeks as he spoke. Family members said they had last spoken to Prema and Harekrishna before they boarded the train at Howrah at 9.30 pm on Thursday. “I don’t know who is behind the incident. But whoever it is should die a million deaths for such a heinous crime” said Surendra Pathak, a friend of Guptas. The mood at the Guptas’ Antop Hill home in Wadala was in stark contrast with the festive look the house wore until Thursday night.

Several relatives and friends, who had come for the pre-wedding rituals, ended up mourning. Relatives said the wedding may be postponed.

Survivor turns saviour for 14 passengers

Kolkata, May 29 — Habibul Gazi, 24, with his frail five-and-a-half-foot frail frame, does not look capable of saving more than a dozen passengers from the jaws of death. But his blood-stained shirt tells the story of his valiant effort.

A passenger of the S7 compartment of the Gyaneshwari Express, one of the worst hit in Friday’s accident, Gazi stood at Howrah station lamenting his inability to save a four-year-old who died in front of his eyes. If he had his way, Gazi could have saved 15 lives.

“I could not save the kid. He died in front my eyes and I was standing like a spectator.

I did pull out the child from the heap of flesh, but by that time, he was already dead,” said the man, breaking into tears. But Gazi was a man of steel as, about 12 hours ago, he worked among mangled steel and flesh and blood to rescue 14 co-passengers in complete darkness.

According to him, the rescue team around 3.30 am, while the train derailed at 1.30 am. “As I reached compartments S3, S4 and S5, I saw people lying in pools of blood.

Some of them were frantically trying to extricate themselves from the wreckage but couldn’t,” said Gazi, who works as a driver at a construction company in Mumbai. “I saw a woman lying outside the compartment and helplessly crying for help.

She was pleading with anyone she met to rescue her son who got stuck inside. I entered the bogie and brought out the child.

But when I handed the child to the lady, she fainted,” he recalled.

Sales tax officer held for accepting Rs 8,000 bribe

Mumbai, May 29 — A class II officer from the sales tax office in Bandra was trapped by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday while allegedly accepting Rs 8,000 from a businessman. ACB sources said that Avinash Bandivadekar, attached to the survey section, was caught inside his office at the Bandra-Kurla complex while accepting the bribe.

According to the ACB, a garment manufacturer from Bandra had paid income tax and sales tax for 2008. However, his sales fell short of expectations in 2009 and he failed to pay the sales tax.

During the third week of 2010, Bandivadekar, along with some of his staff members, went to the garment manufacturing unit in Bandra and initiated action. In February, the sales tax office served the businessman a notice.

On May 21, the businessman went to the office and met Bandivadekar who allegedly told him that the sales tax office was preparing a file on the defaults made by his establishment. Bandivadekar then allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 to ‘close’ the file.

The businessman bargained the amount to Rs 10,000, before lodging a complaint with the ACB. On the ACB’s instruction, the businessman went to pay Rs 8,000 to Bandivadekar at the latter’s office at Bandra-Kurla Complex on Friday.

Indian officials should respect Pakistan’s courts: Malik

The Pakistan government honours the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the release from house arrest of JuD chief Hafiz Saeed and Indian authorities should accord “similar respect to the verdicts of Pakistani courts,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik said today.

Malik made the remarks while talking to reporters a day after the apex court upheld the Lahore High Court’s decision to free Saeed from house arrest and dismissed appeals filed by the federal and Punjab governments challenging his release.

The Interior Minister said Indian authorities should show the same respect for verdicts of Pakistani courts as that shown by the Pakistan government.

“We had also honoured the Indian court’s decision against Ajmal Kasab,” Malik said, referring to the death sentence recently awarded by an Indian court to the Pakistani national for his role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

India yesterday expressed disappointment over Pakistan Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the release of Saeed, whom New Delhi has blamed for masterminding the Mumbai attacks.

Indian officials have said they have provided sufficient evidence against Saeed to Pakistani authorities.

Malik also called for a joint struggle against terrorism by Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

He said Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-American arrested by the US for a botched car bomb attack in New York, had links in the restive South Waziristan tribal region.

An investigation into these links is underway though no one has so far been arrested, he said.

“Faisal Shahzad had links in South Waziristan and his accounts are the focus of our investigation,” Malik said.

Media reports, however, said Pakistani authorities had detained 11 suspects, including an army major, for alleged links with Shahzad.

Live cartridges found in Radisson; 3 Italians detained

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Three Italian nationals were detained Thursday after 24 live cartridges were recovered from their room in south Delhi’s Radisson hotel, police said.

The housekeeping staff of the five-star hotel found the cartridges while cleaning room number 448 Thursday morning. The foreigners had vacated the room Tuesday, a police officer said.

‘The Italian nationals checked in the room Tuesday morning and vacated the room the same day. One of them was detained in Mumbai while the other two where caught in Pune,’ the officer added.

Security has been beefed up at the hotel, located close to the Indira Gandhi international airport.

In February, two British nationals were caught from the same hotel while they were involved in plane spotting. They were later granted bail and let off.

Raina promises a field day

To say that being in-charge of the Indian team is one of the most daunting propositions in world cricket may not quite seem like overstating the fact. Of the many responsibilities an Indian cricket captain is faced with, it is often the relentless and hard-to-please media back home, which proves to be a stiffer and unforgiving challenge than any opposition he comes across on the field.

At least, Suresh Raina, who will become the 20 th ODI captain for India-and the first from Uttar Pradesh- in Zimbabwe, passed his first test satisfactorily, displaying a calm exterior during his first-ever pre-tour press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

When asked-on a number of occasions-if regular Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-who also leads Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise that Raina represents-had passed down any tips, the 24-year-old left-hander only revealed that he was asked to keep things simple. And while it remains to be seen whether Raina does heed his skipper’s advice when it comes to the action in Zimbabwe or not, he did stick to it during the press-briefing by keeping his responses ‘simple’ and cliched.

“It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” got reiterated by Raina at least four times the number of international games that his young pace-attack has managed between them for India.

And his opinions remained the same regarding both his personal goals as well as that of his young team.

Getting the opportunity at such a young age though did come as a pleasant surprise, believed Raina, and he expected his team to live up to their billing of the second-best ODI team in the world. “It was always a dream but it is a great responsibility. The seniors don’t often take breaks from the game and now that they have, it is up to the bench-strength to rise and do well. A good performance here will go a long way in enhancing their future opportunities,” he explained.

While almost the entire Indian team faced the wrath of the media following their disappointing exit from the World T20, Raina was the only one left unscathed. After all he was the only Indian batsman to have totaled three-figures in the tournament, finishing with over 200 runs, including a century against South Africa. He believed that it was up to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and make the most of the seniors’ absence.

“They have all scored a lot of runs in the IPL and in domestic cricket but the onus is on them to replicate that form for India now,” said Raina.

Of the many criticisms that were stacked against the Indian team, it was their poor fielding that came under the scanner the most. But Raina believed his young team would prove a more athletic unit in the field. “We will run harder and are fitter. And if we score a total of 240-250, we will make it look like a 280+ target with our fielding,” said the new Indian captain. With conditions expected to assist fast bowling, Raina believed his team’s strength would be his pace-bowling department led by the inexperienced lot of Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda. “We have bowlers like Umesh who have pace and can trouble the opposition batsmen in those conditions,” he said.

Unlike Dhoni or most of his predecessors, Raina at least signed off on an optimistic note rather than sticking to a well-rehearsed diplomatic tone, insisting that there were no weaknesses in his side and that returning with the trophy was his sole objective as an Indian captain.

Education is the base for everything: Aamir Khan

Mumbai, May 21 (ANI): Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has said education is the base for everything and should be made accessible to everyone.

“For me, education is the big idea. I think that it”s the base for everything. When I say education, I mean education for all. When I say education, I also mean not just teaching the children any one particular subject but allowing them to bloom,” said Aamir Khan.

“Allowing and recognizing the uniqueness of each child, and helping each and every child to blossom…to empower children, and that is what I mean by education,” he added at an event to launch the special anniversary issue of Forbes magazine.

The 44-year-old actor further said the biggest change in the country would occur only when each and every child in the country would receive education and an improved quality of teaching.

“India is a vast country and I know it is not easy but that will be the big change. I think when every child in India gets education and a certain quality of education…what I mean by quality is really the kind of teachers we have, or the kind of teaching we do,” said Khan.

“For that, it is up to us, how much value as a society we give to teaching and if we give a lot of value to teaching, then the teaching will also improve,” he added. (ANI)

My team preparing to add more to my reply: Modi

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) After handing over his reply to the Indian cricket board’s chargesheet, suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi said Saturday his team is readying to add more to the already voluminous response.

Modi said that he will soon hold a press conference on the issue.

‘I will do a press conference at an appropriate time. Its best to allow my colleagues time to go thru my reply. We spent weeks putting it,’ Modi tweeted hours after his lawyer Mehmood M. Abdi submitted six cartons of documents to BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty at the Board headquarters in Mumbai.

‘When anyone is falsely accused – it is their duty to respond and not react. So one responds by making all that. The reply is by my last count around 15000 pages. The Team may have added more. Or getting ready to add more as we print thousands of mails.’

‘Now that the reply is done. 2nd reply still to be worked on. I plan to reply to that shortly. Just got into Monaco to enjoy the F1 tomorrow. Will spend it with friends and family,’ Modi said.

Abdi submitted a voluminous reply to the chargesheet slapped on Modi by BCCI over alleged irregularities in the functioning of the cash-rich IPL.
