Omidyar Network Commits $2.1 M to the Foundation for Ecological Security to Secure Rights to Common Land for India’s Poor

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., and MUMBAI, India, July 15

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., and MUMBAI, India, July 15 /PRNewswire/ — Omidyar Network announced today a grant of $2.1 million over two years to the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) to extend property rights to common land to India’s poorest communities. FES will use the funding to advance policy advocacy, grow operations, and offer new programs that will enable 1.5 million people to obtain property rights to community land while also restoring natural resources in these areas.

FES is the largest organization focused on giving India’s rural poor rights to common land (“the commons”). While up to 30 percent of India’s population depends on the commons for their livelihood, very few have formal rights to this land. FES addresses this issue by representing landless communities and organizing long-term leasing arrangements and secure tenure with state governments. FES uses a holistic approach to resource management that includes securing legal rights and financial resources for individuals, strengthening village institutions, and improving the productivity and long-term sustainability of natural resources.

“For more than 300 million of India’s rural poor, the commons act as a critical safety net — contributing income, water, and everyday nutrition when they are needed most,” said Dr. Amrita Patel, Chair of FES’s Board of Governors. “With Omidyar Network’s funding, FES will reach thousands of additional rural communities with programs that enable them to access, share and conserve their common lands.”

Omidyar Network works to bring greater awareness to the fundamental role of property rights in poverty alleviation globally. In India, where Omidyar Network has opened an office and invested more than $50 million to date, the organization works to increase economic opportunity through a range of tools, including access to land rights. Helping FES scale its operations will enable it to expand critical programs, as well as advocate for policies that encourage equal rights for poor communities.

“Property rights are fundamental to bringing greater economic opportunity, long-term financial security, and personal dignity to the poor,” said Jayant Sinha, Managing Director, Omidyar Network India Advisors. “We are proud to support FES’s goal to materially improve the lives of millions and believe their work demonstrates the potential of property rights to unleash economic growth for lasting impact.”

“Omidyar Network’s support marks a major milestone in FES’s history,” said Jagdeesh Rao Puppala, Executive Director of FES. “Omidyar Network brings a complementary set of values and commitment to property rights, while the funding is timely in helping us reach India’s growing population and addressing the degradation and depletion of natural resources, especially in rural areas.”

Aker Solutions ASA: Aker Solutions completes Gjøa platform for the North Sea

13 June 2010 – The semi-submersible platform by Aker Solutions for the Gjøa oil and gas
field offshore Norway, today started on its journey from the yard at Stord to the North
Sea, where installation will take place. Production start-up is scheduled for the fourth
quarter of 2010.

Gjøa features innovative solutions by Aker Solutions, based on the company’s experience
from more than 50 semi-submersibles. It will be Statoil’s first floating platform
supplied with power from shore. This is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approx
250,000 tonnes per year.

Gjøa is one of the largest ongoing field development projects in the North Sea. Aker
Solutions has designed, engineered and assembled the platform, which will connect to
five subsea templates. With a topside weight of 22.000 tonnes and hull dry weight of
15.000 tonnes, the new platform is ready to create value for its operators and Norwegian
society in decades to come.

“We are proud to deliver the Gjøa platform to Statoil ready for operation in the
northern part of the North Sea. Gjøa is a strategically important project for Aker
Solutions, underpinning our position as a leading supplier of floating platforms for oil
and gas production. Today’s sail away confirms our competence and track record within
this area,” says Jarle Tautra, executive vice president in Aker Solutions.

The Gjøa deck measures 110 meters long and 85 meters wide, an area larger than a
football (soccer) field. The platform’s highest point is the flare tower at 143 meters,
several floors higher than Norway’s tallest building, Oslo Plaza, at 117 meters. In
total, more than 500 Aker Solutions engineers have been mobilised to design the
platform, from Oslo, Norway, and Mumbai, India. During the final assembly at Stord, peak
manning reached 3000 skilled operators. Key deliveries have also been made by other Aker
Solutions locations in Norway, including Egersund, Verdal, Moss and Pusnes.

Installation of the mooring system, transportation and installation of the Gjøa platform
is carried out by Aker Solutions’ subsidiary Aker Marine Contractors.

“The delivery of Gjøa continues our good working relationship with Statoil from the
similar, but slightly smaller Kristin platform which we completed a few years ago. We
are proud to be their partner in further developing oil and gas resources in the North
Sea and beyond. We thank them for their confidence. I would also personally like to
congratulate the thousands of employees and subcontractors involved in this project, on
a job well done!” says Tautra.

Licencees to the Gjøa field are Statoil, development operator (20%), GDF SUEZ E&P Norge
AS, production operator (30%), Petoro (30%), Shell (12%) and RWE Dea (8%). Estimated
recoverable reserves amount to 82 million barrels of oil and condensate, and 40 billion
cubic metres of gas. In addition, the Vega satellite field has estimated reserves of 26
million barrels of condensate and 18 billion cubic metres of gas. The gas will be sent
through the Flags pipeline to Scotland while the oil will be piped to Statoil’s refinery
at Mongstad.

Suspended IPL chief replies to corruption charges, CRI

MUMBAI, India (AP) Suspended Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi’s official response to the corruption allegations against him was delivered in six large boxes to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Modi’s lawyer delivered the thousands of pages of documents late Saturday, meeting a deadline which had been extended by five days.

Modi followed it up with a confident posting on Twitter. “It’s best to allow my colleagues time to go thru my reply,” Modi said in a tweet late Saturday.

“We spent weeks putting it,” together. The BCCI is investigating Modi over his involvement in the initial bids for the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab at the inaugural IPL auctions in 2008, in a broadcast deal and in the awarding of two new IPL franchises last month.

Modi was the powerbroker in establishing the lucrative IPL and then turning it into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, which has led to an explosion of interest in the shortest form of international cricket. Modi’s lawyer Mehmood S. Abdi declined to elaborate on the contents of the six cartons delivered to BCCI Chief Administrator Ratnakar Shetty, but told reporters he was confident that the charges against Modi would be dropped.

“The charges were based on allegations and gossip. BCCI can never prove it.

We are confident that all the charges against Modi will be dropped,” Abdi said. He added: “The reply has been written in simple prose and BCCI president Shashank Manohar, who himself is a lawyer, will need only a few hours to go through it.

” Shetty did not comment on the documents or what the next step in the proceedings was likely to be, saying only that “there is a procedure in the BCCI and the president will follow that.” Modi was initially supposed to answer the corruption allegations by May 10, but was given additional time to reply after he asked the board for additional documents.

Modi has been barred from participating in the operation of the IPL, the BCCI or any of its committees. A vice president of the BCCI, Modi has said his running of the IPL was completely transparent and denied any corruption.

An investigation led by Shetty into IPL records had already shown “a lot of documents missing,” BCCI president Manohar said last month.

Terrorism and Kashmir should be on top priority: Pak media

As India and Pakistan gear up for a meeting of their foreign ministers to nudge forward the bilateral peace process, the two sides will have to focus on key issues like terrorism and Kashmir and put in place new confidence-building measures, the Pakistani media said today.

While tackling the menace of terrorism is necessary to prevent another Mumbai-like incident that could stall the peace process, Pakistan needs to focus on the trial of suspects linked to the carnage in the Indian financial hub that claimed 166 lives in November 2008, leading newspapers said.

During a telephone conversation on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart S M Krishna agreed to meet in Islamabad on July 15 for talks.

Their meeting will be preceded by talks between Indian Home Minister P Chidambaran and his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik and the two Foreign Secretaries on June 26.

The News daily, in its editorial “Pakistan-India talks, noted that Qureshi had said “terrorism will figure as a key issue in the talks”.

It further said: “We know this is essential. If the matter is not tackled we run the risk of seeing another episode, such as that in 2008, throwing the dialogue effort into a nosedive.”

“To avoid this, the question of militancy needs to be dealt with. The matter of Kashmir stands at the centre of this,” it added.

The News said that while it might not be possible to immediately open talks on the Kashmir dispute, both countries “would do well to keep in mind that moving towards a resolution is essential to lasting peace. Necessary confidence-building measures may be adopted ahead of broaching the Kashmir issue, but in the final analysis it is this region which acts to generate militancy.”

The influential Dawn newspaper, in an editorial titled “A fresh start?”, said improving relations seems to be on the minds of both countries for the first time since the Mumbai attacks and “India and Pakistan must seize whatever opportunities that come their way to put their volatile relationship on firmer footing”.

It also listed two opportunities that could set the stage for a “real breakthrough” during the meeting of the foreign ministers in July.

One was the meetings between the interior ministers and foreign secretaries in June and the other was action by Pakistan “to inject new life” into the trial by an anti-terrorism court of seven suspects linked to the Mumbai attacks.

The Dawn noted that this trial “is moving desultorily, marred by countless adjournments”.

It added that India was “still very concerned about the relative lack of action here in Pakistan against those linked to the Mumbai attacks”.

“Yes, the wheels of justice move slowly in the subcontinent, but there is a sense that concluding the trial of the Mumbai suspects is not as much a matter of concern as it should be. A more vigorous trial could go some way to ease Indian suspicions,” the editorial said.

At the same time, India “needs to make some gesture which demonstrates it genuinely wants a result-oriented dialogue process, and not just endless talks about talks that produce photo-ops and little else. Perhaps India should think about concluding a deal on Siachen and Sir Creek, two issues where the bureaucrats have come close to sealing a final settlement,” it added.

The Daily Times, in its editorial “Dialogue matters”, acknowledged that in the wake of the conviction of Pakistani national Ajmal Amir Kasab for his role in the Mumbai attacks, the issue of terrorism “will obtain top billing” in the upcoming meeting of the Foreign Ministers.

“It is wise of Mr Qureshi to keep repeating that any attempts by non-state actors to disrupt the peace process should not achieve their objective.

“It is also very refreshing to note that our foreign minister is not entertaining any delusions about the ‘uphill task’ that such a dialogue is, especially when it is occurring between two historically, and mutually, suspicious neighbours.

“He has cautioned the public not to expect a resolution to Kashmir and other such prickly issues overnight, and rightly so,” the daily said.

It hoped that the move by Pakistan and India to bridge their trust deficit and overcome accusations will lead to mutually beneficial conclusions for both countries.

“Officially recognised as democracies, dialogue is the only way forward for both India and Pakistan as a means to usher in more civilised norms of conduct and normal relations,” the newspaper said.

India should not doubt our sincerity in handling Mumbai attacks probe: Pak

Islamabad, Sep 7(ANI): Pakistan on Monday asked India to provide more proof to enable it to carry forward its probe in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack instead of doubting Pakistan’s sincerity.

The latest reaction of the Government of Pakistan has come following Indian Government’s allegation blaming it for deliberately holding up the probe in Mumbai attacks.

“India should not doubt our sincerity in handling this case. Instead of levelling allegations they should provide us with concrete proof so that we could take this case forward in a meaningful way,” said Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Abdul Basit, in an interview to BBC radio.

Basit also said that there was no involvement of the Pakistan Government in the probe, and said that all the decisions are “purely judicial”.

“We want to make it clear to India that this is a purely judicial matter and the governments of Pakistan and India cannot do anything about this,” Basit added.

Basit further said that that the matter was in court so no comments should be voiced over the issue.

“The matter is now in the court and it is incorrect to comment on this,” Basit said. (ANI)

Air India employees to go on strike for two hours on Friday

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Air India employees will go on two hour-long strike on Friday between 1300 hrs IST to 1500 hrs IST.

Slumdog child star back in his bulldozed shanty home

Washington, May 17 (ANI): Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, child star of hit film “Slumdog Millionaire,” and his family have more or less rebuilt their shanty home after officials in Mumbai, India, demolished it.

The ten-year-old and his family moved back into what was left of their home on May 15.

Azharuddin, who played the young Salim in the Oscar-winning film, was asleep when a police officer woke him and ordered him to leave the shack.

“I was asleep when the policemen came. He threatened to beat me,” CBS News quoted Azharuddin as telling the reporters.

The family has claimed they had not been informed about the planned demolition.

Azharuddin’s mother said: “We’ve lived here for at least fifteen years. They didn’t show us any paperwork. They just came and started demolishing our hut.”

City officials said that they bulldozed the illegally built shanty homes to tackle overcrowding and will re-house residents. (ANI)

Pakistan demands more info on Mumbai attacks from India

Islamabad, May 7 (ANI): Pakistan on Thursday sought additional information on the Mumbai attacks from the Government of India “as soon as possible” so that it could put up a “credible prosecution” of all persons arrested by it for their alleged involvement in the terrorist strikes.

Pakistan would not be able to “put up a credible prosecution” of the persons arrested for alleged involvement in the terror attacks if New Delhi did not provide the additional information sought by Islamabad, said Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit on Thursday.

Pakistan is “very serious” about bringing to justice the persons it has arrested and it is thus necessary for India to provide the additional information and evidence “as soon as possible,” Basit told a weekly news briefing.

Basit said it in reply to a question on reported comments by Indian politicians about Pakistan not being serious about taking action against the persons it has arrested.

India has provided a dossier on the Mumbai attacks and responded to Pakistan’s 30 questions seeking additional information. Pakistan handed over to India another request for additional information last month. (ANI)

Pawar chairs organising committee meeting of World Cup 2011

Dubai/Mumbai, Apr.28 (ANI): The Central Organising Committee (COC) for the ICC Cricket World Cup (ICC CWC) 2011 met in Mumbai on Tuesday to continue preparations for the tournament.

The meeting, under the chairmanship of ICC Vice-President Sharad Pawar, was attended by ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat and representatives of the three countries set to host the event, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

It was the first meeting of the COC since the ICC Board resolved earlier this month that, given the current uncertainty surrounding the security situation within Pakistan, the country should not host matches in the ICC CWC 2011.

Among the decisions taken were:

Of the 49 matches due to take place in the tournament, 29 will be played in India, 12 in Sri Lanka and eight in Bangladesh. The 14 matches originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan have been redistributed with eight going to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh

A total of 13 venues will be used for the tournament with eight of those in India, three in Sri Lanka and two in Bangladesh. The previous set-up with four hosts including Pakistan had 15 venues proposed with eight in India, four in Pakistan, two in Sri Lanka and one in Bangladesh

Bangladesh will now stage two of the four quarter-finals, with India and Sri Lanka hosting one each. Under the previous arrangement each of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were to have staged one each

The two semi-finals will be staged in India and Sri Lanka, with the final in India

Scheduling for the quarter and semi-finals will attempt to ensure that the host country will play at home should it qualify

All venues for matches will be confirmed and announced in due course

The event tournament director was confirmed as Prof. Ratnakar hetty

The tournament secretariat will be based in Mumbai, India

Inderjit Singh Bindra, the ICC Principal Advisor, will work closely with the COC, adding his vast experience to the administration of the tournament. Mr Bindra was a key figure in the successful staging of the two previous ICC CWCs to be held on the sub-continent, in 1987 and 1996

A security directorate will be formed under the chairmanship of Board of Control for Cricket in India President Shashank Manohar.

It will include representatives of all three hosts and the ICC in a pro-active attempt to manage the issue both before and during the tournament

A venue inspection sub-committee was formed under the leadership of N Srinivasan.

Commenting on the gathering, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “It was a very constructive and decisive meeting with various working groups now charged with the responsibility to deliver on operational requirements.

“With less than two years to go before we are due to stage cricket’s biggest showpiece the clock is ticking, but everyone can be encouraged by the progress made in Mumbai today.

“Some fundamental decisions have been taken which have cleared the way for us to move forward and deliver the tournament successfully.

“We now need to continue with this level of progress in the weeks and months ahead to ensure a safe, secure and successful event.”

India tells Pakistan not to adopt delaying tactics

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): A day after Pakistan demanded more proof on the Mumbai terror attacks, India responded by saying Pakistan must demonstrate sincerity by taking tangible action in the case.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said India had supplied enough evidence to Pakistan regarding the investigations of the 26/11 terror attacks.

“The evidence which we have given to Pakistan is adequate. We have given proofs, first the dossier, then the response to the Pakistan questionnaire. Pakistan must demonstrate the sincerity of its intent by taking tangible action,” sharma said.

“It is in the interest of Pakistan that the infrastructure of the terrorist outfit is dismantled and the masterminds, the perpetrators are brought to justice. Delaying on pure technicalities is not going to improve things particularly when we are talking of peace and stability in the entire region,” Sharma added.

Pakistan has acknowledged that the November attacks in Mumbai, in which 166 people were killed, were partly planned and launched from its territory. That had helped ease tension.

New Delhi said state agencies in Pakistan were involved in the attacks and provided a dossier of what it said was evidence which pointed to Pakistan-based militants being behind the attacks.

Islamabad denied this and raised 30 questions in response to the dossier asking for more evidence.

Last month, India replied to the 30 questions raised by Pakistan and said it was time for Islamabad to act quickly in the investigation. (ANI)

The company, during a ceremony held at Modi Hyundai dealership in Mumbai, has handed over about 30 cars of Hyundai’s best selling model – the Santro under its first batch, to the Mumbai Taxi Union.

Presently, Mumbai city has approx 50,000 black and yellow taxis which are to be replaced by new vehicles, as per the decision taken by the Taxi and Autorickshaw Welfare Sangh, which is in line with the state government’s policy to phase out the 25-year old vehicles plying as taxis.

Mumbai attacks trial to start April 15, AS

MUMBAI, India (AP) The trial of a Pakistani man charged in last year’s Mumbai terror attacks will start on April 15, more than a week behind schedule, because of delays in securing the building where the trial is to be held, officials said Monday. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the only gunman captured during the attacks, which left 164 people dead, could face the death penalty if he is convicted of 12 criminal counts, including murder and waging war against India.

Nine other attackers were killed during the three-day siege in November. Kasab’s trial will take place in a special court set up at the Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai where he is being held, but the building’s security infrastructure will only be ready for the trial next week, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the trial judge M.L. Tahiliyani.

He did not provide details. Kasab’s trial was supposed to start Monday.

India has blamed the Mumbai attacks on Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamist militant group widely believed to have been created by Pakistani intelligence agencies in the 1980s to fight Indian rule in the divided Kashmir region. Pakistani officials have acknowledged that the attacks were partly plotted on their soil and announced criminal proceedings against eight suspects.

They have also acknowledged that Kasab is a Pakistani national. Indian police have also filed charges against two Indian citizens suspected of aiding the attackers.
