Wellington, Sep. 1 (ANI): The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has given permission to the Bank of Baroda to begin trading in the country, making it the nation’s 19th registered bank.

Mumbai TV actress accused of child abuse gets bail

Mumbai, Aug.22 (ANI): A local court here on Saturday granted bail to Mumbai-based TV actress Urvashi Dhanorkar, who has been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Child Labour Act, for allegedly physically abusing her 10-year-old housemaid Rameshwari.

She was produced before the Bandra Holiday Court.

Dhanorkar’s lawyer, Nitin S. Satpute, contended the black marks and swelling on the child’s face were created by bee stings and the burn scars on her forearms were caused by boiling water fallen on her.

“Under the Juvenile Act, my client was arrested. She was produced in the court. Police asked for her remand but the court rejected the police plea and granted her judicial custody. Later, the court granted her bail,” said Satpute.

The actress was arrested on Saturday morning after medical reports confirmed that Rameshwari was physically abused.

Rameshwari was allegedly punched in her eye and was left with black and bruised marks, besides burns on her forearms.

The girl was rescued by her neighbours on Friday (Aug 21) night, when she was playing the children of her employer in the garden.

“When I saw this child her hands were burnt, eyes were red. She was scared. Residents gathered and took her to hospital. After examining, the doctor said it was marks of beating up. Secondly, according to the child labour (laws), hiring any child as a domestic help is a crime. We phoned police and it came for our help,” said Bindu Bhosle, Chairperson of Mahan Shakti a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) and neighbour of Rameshwari. (ANI)

‘Facebook for Parsees’ may help revive Zoroastrianism

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Facebook has united millions of long-lost school friends and lovers. And now, the popular social networking site has raised hopes of helping revive a religion: Zoroastrianism.

The 3,500-year-old religion, which is on the brink of extinction, is possibly the world’s wealthiest and most influential faith. However, it is losing its Midas touch, reports The Times.

Bachelors belonging to the religion, whose fire-worshipping followers subscribe to the teachings of the prophet Zoroaster, tend to marry late, and, as far as women are concerned some of them wed outside the community. As a result they’re excommunicated.

Because of this, there are only 120,000 Zoroastrians left, a third of whom are over 60.

Also, the diminishing birth rate has raised fears that adherents – known as Parsees in India, the religion’s main stronghold – are dying out.

Now, the community is counting on a website designed to create a database of its young that will encourage them to intermarry.

It is being billed as a kind of “Facebook for Parsees” that will place a heavy emphasis on matrimonial matters.

Tashan Mistree, 26, one of the Parsees behind the project, said: “The matrimonial part is important if we want to preserve our ethnicity … That we are a small community means that every individual matters.”

The site, which will be open to Parsees between 15 and 40, will foster a sense of ethnic identity among members with information about community events and will include a careers portal.

“It’s crazy, but for years this religion had not cared for the views of anybody under 75,” said Jimmy Mistry, a prominent Parsee in Mumbai.

“The young had been driven away,” Mistry added.

The social network is being developed by the youth wing of the Bombay Parsee Panchayat (BPP), a Mumbai-based governing council that is one of Zoroastrianism’s most influential seats of power. (ANI)

Gold prices likely to fall further in wedding and festival season

*

Gold pricesIn spite of the recent drop in gold prices in India to slightly over Rs 14,200 per 10 grams, most gold dealers opine that buyers are still not tempted enough to go in for substantial purchases because they are possibly waiting for the prices to fall further.

A majority of market players project that waiting for a couple of weeks more might turn out to be beneficial for prospective buyers. Though gold has fallen by over 12 percent in the past month-and a-half, largely due to a stronger rupee, there is still scope for correction in terms of prices of the precious metal, since buying gold in full-swing for the forthcoming wedding season is yet to kick off.

A bullion dealer at a government bank said that gold sales are still “moderate,” with the demand having picked up last week, as traders refreshed their stocks to cater to the demand for the wedding and festival season, to commence in mid-April and Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on April 27.

And going by the opinion of Prithviraj Kothari, a Mumbai-based bullion broker, the wait may well be worth it! Kothari, who expects a fall in gold prices, said: “Prices could further correct to Rs 13,000 to 13,500 levels as the sentiment in equity market has improved lately.”

More than 51,000 Nano booking forms sold by Tata Motors in five days

Despite the rather heavy booking amount, ranging between Rs. 95,000 and Rs. 1,40,000, the dealers of Tata Motors alone have had more than 51,000 forms sold to the excited customers for the small wonder Nano, during the five days since the forms were made available from April 1.

The Nano forms are being sold for Rs. 300 – out of which Rs. 250 is retained by Tata Motors, while Rs. 50 goes to the dealer. Sources familiar with the proceedings say that Tata Motors will expectedly earn nearly Rs. 30 crore from the sale of about 10 lakh forms through 218 dealers.

With the company planning to manufacture only 50,000 cars in the first year, the number of forms sold is staggering, more so since it does not include the additional 30,000 forms sold at other locations like SBI, its subsidiaries and associates; other preferred financiers; and outlets of Tata Finance, Croma, Titan, Westside, and Tata Indicom.

While one of the dealers said that the response to the Nano has been so “huge” that it ran short of forms at one of its dealerships; an official at a Tata Motors’ Mumbai-based dealership said: “The response has been quite good, even though customers have not been given a chance to test-drive the car!”

Sanofi, Piramal proposed merger deal falls through – report

A proposed deal by France’s Sanofi-Aventis to buy a majority stake in Indian drug maker Piramal Healthcare Ltd has fallen through due to differences over valuation, a newspaper reported on Monday.

In Februray, a source familiar with the situation had told Reuters that GlaxoSmithKline Plc and Sanofi-Aventis were bidding for the Indian drug maker, with the sale price perhaps going as high as $1.5 billion.

Mumbai-based Piramal has repeatedly denied acquisition reports, calling them ‘unfounded’, and has said the founder has no intention of diluting current ownership levels.

“Sanofi Aventis had put a valuation of over 300 rupees per share for Piramal Healthcare. But, this price was not acceptable to the promoters,” The Economic Times newspaper quoted a merchant banker familiar with the development as saying.

Talks between the two companies had reached an advanced stage before it collapsed, the paper said, citing another senior pharma industry official briefed about the proposed deal.

A Piramal spokesman declined comment while Sanofi-Aventis officials could not be reached for comments immediately.

Wockhardt shares drop 20 pct on liquidity woes

Wockhardt Ltd shares fell by a fifth on Wednesday as the drugmaker sought to restructure its debt and said it was evaluating a recast of certain businesses and units, suggesting a liquidity crunch.

Adverse market conditions, liquidity constraints and a large debt burden had forced Mumbai-based Wockhardt to refer to the corporate debt restructuring (CDR) cell through its lender ICICI Bank, the company said after market hours on Tuesday.

“Getting into CDR is a welcome move,” said Sarabjit Kour Nangra, pharma analyst with Angel Broking. “However, there are concerns about the company’s exposure to derivatives as the extent of these losses is not quantified.”

She has a ‘buy’ rating on the company’s shares, but has put them under review for the time being.

As of Dec. 31, Wockhardt had 37.77 billion rupees of debt, ratings agency CRISIL said in a note in February of which 23.7 billion rupees of debt is repayable in two years. About 13.24 billion rupees is coming up for repayment in calendar year 2009.

Wockhardt shares, which fell to a low of 68.45 rupees during the day, are trading 12.5 percent lower at 74.80 rupees in a flat Mumbai market at 11:45 a.m, the worst performer on the BSE 500 index at the time.

Its announcement after trading hours on Tuesday prompted Religare Capital Markets analyst Vikas Sonawale to downgrade the stock to ‘sell’ from ‘buy,’ citing uncertainties of the future financials of the company.

“The bankers will influence the decision making of Wockhardt. It will change the company’s investment plans, dividend policies, etc.,” Sonawale wrote in the report.

Wockhardt could sell some of its business units besides a stake in the unlisted Wockhardt Hospitals, which is promoted by the founders of Wockhardt Ltd, Angel’s Nangra said.

“The promoters could raise money by selling their stake in Wockhardt Hospitals and infuse that into Wockhardt Ltd,” she added.

Wockhardt has no stake in Wockhardt Hospitals, according to the latter’s draft prospectus filed at the time of its initial public offer, which was withdrawn last year on lack of demand.

SALE?

Indian media has been reporting on likely sales of one or the other asset of the Mumbai-based drug maker, including a pharma unit, land and brands.

Pfizer Inc and Sanofi-Aventis were also reported to be in the race to acquire a stake in the Indian firm’s biotechnology business.

The company has been exploring options to raise funds through stake sale to private equity firms, industry officials said, a move Nangra said was not be feasible for the company.

“With the market capitalisation of the company at only about 8 billion rupees, even if they dilute 50 percent, they will get very little money. That’s not sufficient.”

Wockhardt shares have lost a fifth of their value in the quarter to March, far worse than the 4.6 percent fall in the BSE healthcare index in the same period.

SRK blasts Slumdog’s critics

London, Feb 10 (ANI): Indian superstar Shahrukh Khan has blasted his fellow countrymen for criticising Mumbai-based hit film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, and praised the project for allowing the world to see the sub-continent in a “visually appealing” way.

Campaigners in India have slammed the multi award-winning film claiming the use of the word ‘dog’ is insulting to those living in slums.

Also, film’s bosses have come under fire for underpaying their Indian child stars, director Danny Boyle vigorously denying the claims, insisting the studio paid over-the-odds to ensure the welfare of their young actors.

Now Khan – who turned down the role of the film’s TV quizmaster – has come out and defended the film.

“I think it’s really nice that it will open doors for people to understand that there is a lot of visual appeal to India. I hear a lot of people saying that India has been shown in bad light,” the Daily Star quoted him, as saying.

“But then my logic to everyone is that why is it that somebody comes from outside and makes a film like Gandhi and Slumdog. It becomes internally acceptable. All we can say about it is that it is showing India in a poor light,” he added. (ANI)

Indian punters bet big on Oscar win for Slumdog

Indian punters bet big on Oscar win for Slumdog New Delhi – Indian gamblers are betting big money on Slumdog Millionaire, the rags-to-riches film set in Mumbai, to win the best picture, best director and best music awards at the upcoming Oscars, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

An estimated 1 billion rupees (20.5 million dollars) was riding on the film in Indian betting circles, The Economic Times said.

The film, which was directed by Briton Danny Boyle and has an Indian cast, has bagged 10 Oscar nominations ahead of the awards presentation February 22 in Los Angeles.

“We are accepting bets for three things – AR Rahman (in the best music category), the movie (in the best picture category) and Danny Boyle (in the best director category),” a Mumbai-based bookmaker told the daily.

Another punter in the western city of Ahmedabad said betting on Slumdog has been gaining momentum after the end Sunday of the one-day cricket series between India and Sri Lanka.

“Bets worth 200 [million] to 300 million rupees [4.12 million to 6.18 million dollars] on Slumdog have been accepted in my circle in the past few days,” he said.

Odds for Slumdog winning best film are being offered at 1.53-1, about the same as on international betting websites. Indian bookies have put Boyle at 1.55-1 odds to win and Rahman at 1.25-1, the Times said.

Organized betting is illegal in India, but several betting rackets are run by criminal syndicates. Other than casino and lottery games in some states, legal gambling is limited to betting on horse racing.

Slumdog Millionaire, which has received rave reviews as well as criticism for glamorizing poverty, is based on Q and A, a book by Indian diplomat and writer Vikas Swarup.

The film tells the story of an orphan from Mumbai’s slums who makes it to the final of an Indian game show.

The film is considered the frontrunner at the Oscars after it already dominated the Golden Globes while also picking up prizes from the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America. (dpa)

Hollywood holds its breath – and sleep – for Oscar nominations

Hollywood holds its breath - and sleep - for Oscar nominations Los Angeles – At the distinctly un-starlike hour of 5:30 am (1330 GMT) Thursday morning, the Oscar season will officially move into high gear.

That’s when Forest Whitaker, who won an Oscar in 2006′s The Last King Of Scotland, will unveil the nominations for the 2008 Academy Awards from Hollywood’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

Forest, 47, will be reading out the names at the press conference alongside Sid Ganis, who heads the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The exuberant Mumbai-based drama Slumdog Millionaire is widely expected to emerge as the frontrunner for Oscar glory, after its sweep of the Golden Globes.

Other films in the running are the Batman tale The Dark Knight, political narrative Frost/Nixon, animated masterpiece WALL-E, gay biopic Milk, and Brad Pitt’s period piece, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Other films to watch out for are The Wrestler, whose comeback star Mickey Rourke is virtually certain to be nominated for the best actor prize, Catholic abuse drama Doubt, with Meryl Streep, and The Reader and Revolutionary Road, both starring Kate Winslet, first as a former Nazi guard, and second as the frustrated suburban wife of Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Oscars will be presented on February 22 in Los Angeles. (dpa)

Check terror, don’t harp on Kashmir: India to Pakistan

United Nations, (IANS) India has told Pakistan that it should concentrate on taking action against those terrorists who were instrumental in the Mumbai terror attacks rather than harping on the Kashmir issue.

‘Pakistan should focus its attention on taking action against the criminals who perpetrate or aid, abet, finance or otherwise support terrorism, rather than bringing before this council extraneous issues relating to the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir,’ Indian diplomat Vikram Doraiswami said at the UN headquarters here Tuesday.

Doraiswami made this statement using the Right to Reply option during the Security Council debate on terrorism after the Pakistani Ambassador to the UN Abdullah Hussain Haroon raised the issue of Kashmir before the 15-member body.

‘The issue at hand is that of terrorism and the use of territory controlled by Pakistan by terrorist groups based in Pakistan to perpetrate acts of terror in India,’ Doraiswami said.

In his speech, the Pakistani envoy tried to link terrorism in the region to the Kashmir dispute.

‘The best outcome of the (Mumbai) tragedy would be the resolution of the issue of Kashmir,’ Haroon said.

Terrorists who India says came from Pakistan struck at several places in Mumbai on the night of Nov 26, eventually seizing two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre. The 60-hour nightmare left 172 people dead and 248 injured.

‘We did not wish to raise any issues, but by jumping to conclusions, I would request my friends in India only to recall when the Friendship Samjhauta Express – I do not want to raise this, I am just giving an example – was burnt down with Muslim passengers killed on their way to Pakistan, fingers were pointed hastily at Pakistan. Later, it was proved that an Indian Army colonel was involved,’ Haroon said.

‘Similarly, another point I would not have raised today, but under the circumstances, in Kashmir, Pakistan despite its domestic situation, is exercising restraint in international forums. This is how we would have liked to see the aftermath of Mumbai incident as well,’ he said.(IANS)
