“Salt” can’t shake “Inception” at box office

July 25 (Reuters) – Angelina Jolie’s new spy thriller “Salt” failed to take the North American box office crown from Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Inception,” which enjoyed a stronger-than-expected hold in its second weekend.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, “Inception” earned $43.5 million during the three days beginning on Friday, while “Salt” was at No. 2 with $36.5 million.

Pundits had predicted “Salt” might hit the $40 million range, although distributor Columbia Pictures said the opening was in line with its expectations.

The three-day estimate represents a significant drop from the $50 million openings for each of Jolie’s last big films, “Wanted” and “Mr and Mrs Smith.”

Jolie earned $20 million for “Salt,” a timely thriller about Russian sleeper spies preparing to bring the United States to its knees. The high-energy action role was originally envisaged for Tom Cruise, who went on to make the box office dud “Knight and Day” instead.

“Inception,” starring DiCaprio as a thief who steals secrets from deep within people’s subconscious, raced to $143.7 million after 10 days, thanks to a drop of just 31 percent from last weekend. Movies generally lose about half of their opening-weekend audience.

“It’s driven by word of mouth, it’s driven by repeat business already,” Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said of the film’s strong hold.

The $160 million project was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the English filmmaker responsible for the last two “Batman” movies.

Brangelina searching for luxury house in Big Apple

New York, July 13 (ANI): Globetrotting Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are apparently thinking of setting up base in New York, for reports have suggested that the celebrity couple have been secretly checking out plush properties in the Big Apple.

According to reports, the star couple have even seen the Apthorp-the century-old upper West Side landmark that’s undergoing a condo conversion.

Although the ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ pair have always rented out properties during whenever they have stayed in the city, they now seems to be interested in the fortress-like luxury of Apthorp.

“The gated courtyard means they can get in and out of their car without being hassled by paparazzi. The building also has several other exits,” The New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

It is believed that Pitt and Jolie are thinking about putting together three units in the building.

“I heard they’re ready to spend as much as 25 million dollars,” said a source.

It is believed that the couple is beguiled by the hand wrought period details of the Apthorp, which was built in 1908 by the Astor family.

Some apartments are as large as 13 rooms and boast 11-foot ceilings and 44-inch-wide hallways. (ANI)

The couple allegedly spent a romantic weekend as part of birthday celebrations for the royal, who turned 27 on June 21.

“They have been staying at private house under the assumed name Mr and Mrs Smith,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a source as saying.

“It is quite funny really that they feel they need to go to such great lengths to keep their visit a secret – but I suppose it adds to the romance,” the source added.

The couple were purportedly joined by younger royal Harry and a group of friends for a boozy beach bash.

The brothers were said to have guzzled beer and cider and played football before building a fire.

The loverbirds, who have been surrounded with speculations suggesting they are soon to announce their wedding plans, later watched the sun set together. (ANI)

And now the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star, who is on target to achieve his goal of building 100 homes by the end of 2009, wants to pile more roofs.

“It’s exceeding my expectations. But it’s really, it’s hundreds, thousands of people that made it happen,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“One hundred and fifty (houses) is our goal. We’ll have 100 by the end of the year. So next year, we’ll have 150. But I’m hoping we can expand that, because the machine works,” he added. (ANI)

Experts don’t buy Pitt’s defence of not cheating on Aniston for Jolie

New York, Mar 20 (ANI): Experts say that having emotional feelings for someone is the start of an affair, but actor Brad Pitt, who was married to actress Jennifer Aniston when he shot ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ with actress Angelina Jolie, has denied that he cheated on her.

Pitt, 45, has once again rebuffed allegations that he started his affair with Jolie on the set of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ while he was still married to Aniston, and says that he was still filming the movie when he split up with her.

“What people don’t understand is that we filmed for a year. We were still filming after Jen and I split up,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying in the February issue of W magazine.

“Even then it doesn’t mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn’t,” he added.

But experts have pointed out that an affair is not just about sex, but also about emotions. An emotional affair is an affair. If you find yourself having feelings for someone, that is the beginning of an affair,” Rachel Sussman, a New York-based marriage and family therapist, said.

So whether Pitt and Jolie consummated their relationship while he was still married to Aniston is irrelevant, she says.

Both Jolie and Pitt have denied that they began dating during his marriage and itt now says that his early relationship with Jolie was “respectful” of his marriage with Aniston.

But Pitt’s definition of what’s “respectful” might differ from his ex-wife’s.

“Men do tend to walk around feeling that unless I’m having sex, I’m not doing anything wrong,” M. Gary Neuman, psychotherapist and author of “The Truth About Cheating: Why Men Stray and What You Can Do to Prevent It,” said. Women can be uncomfortable with the husband talking about how many lunches he’s had with an associate. There is a difference of perspective,” he said.dding that extramarital sex “is only painful because it says how far the emotional affair went.”

Both Sussman and Neuman agree that spouses can avoid becoming too close to a member of the opposite sex. (ANI)

She tells Britain’s Hello magazine, “I don’t regret any of that time with Brad and I’m not here to beat myself up about it. They were seven very intense years together and it was beautiful and complicated.

“I will love Brad for the rest of my life – you can’t take away good memories. Were there times when I had a little ‘pity party’ for myself? Of course. Who hasn’t done that?”

And the actress hopes to eventually rebuild her friendship with her former partner.

She adds, “I really do hope that we’ll be good friends again at some point.” (ANI)

‘Famous’ Brad Pitt can’t even pee alone!

London, Mar 3 (ANI): Stardom sure comes with a huge price tag – ask Brad Pitt.

While Pitt managed to get unnoticed for most of the afternoon, but as he stood up to go to the rest room, he was mobbed by fans.

“He’d been sat drinking in a corner with friends and had gone largely unnoticed for most of the afternoon, but as soon as he got up to go to the toilet the whole pub hushed,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.

“It was all rather embarrassing. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife.

“He ended up being trailed by about six star-struck fans as he made his way to the men’s room.

“The poor chap couldn’t even hope to pee in peace after that,” the source added. (ANI)

Brad Pitt still uncomfortable with his celebrity status

Washington, Feb 21 (ANI): Hollywood actor Brad Pitt has revealed that he still hasn’t come to terms with his celebrity status, as he does not understand the concept of talking about his personal life along with his work.

The ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ actor revealed that though he has been in showbiz for a very long time, he still does not feel comfortable talking about his personal life.

“You put yourself out there in a film, you lay it on the line, and that’s what you believe your job is, Then there’s this whole other entity you get sucked into, this publicity machine that you have to go and sell your wares,” Us Weekly quoted him as saying.

Pitt also emphasized that he doesn’t like the custom of mentioning his personal life just to show his support to his flick.

“It’s something I’ve never made my peace with. I wrestle with it, and it’s out of control. Somehow you’re not supporting your film if you don’t get out and get on a show and talk about your personal life. I find it so…just such a bad feeling,” he added. (ANI)
