Iranian regime accused of using torture, murder and rape to suppress opposition

Tehran, Sep. 18 (ANI): The father of an Iranian student, who died in jail after being arrested for protesting against President Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election, has claimed that his son was beaten, got his bones broken and toenails pulled out while in prison.

Amir Javadifar, 24, was so badly beaten that he had to treated in hospital before being taken to the notorious Evin prison, Times Online reports.

Later, his father was called to collect his dead body. And, they ordered his family to say that he had died of a pre-existing condition.

“My son was not involved in politics. He loved his motherland – that’s all. I alone mourn him,” the report quoted his father, as saying.

According to reports prepared by the country’s opposition, Javadifar was just one among scores of alleged cases of murder, torture and rape. And, security forces have engaged in systematic killing and torture to try to break the opposition, the report adds.

“The use of rape and torture was similar across prisons in Tehran and the provinces. It is difficult not to conclude that the highest authorities planned and ordered these actions. Local authorities would not dare take such actions without word from above,” the report quoted one investigator referring to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as saying.

The documents suggest that at least 200 demonstrators were killed in Tehran, with 56 others still unaccounted for, and that 173 were killed in other cities.

According to the report, the documents also suggest that a chain of unofficial, makeshift prisons has been set up across Iran where rape and torture are common practice.

In Tehran alone, 37 young men and women claim to have been raped by their jailers. Doctors’ reports say that two males, aged 17 and 22, died as a result of severe internal bleeding after being raped, the report adds.

Female rape victims were mostly held for days, the report claims, adding that some victims had said that their jailers claimed to have “religious sanction” to violate them as they were “morally dirty”. (ANI)

MJ’s brother’s fury over ‘secret’ burial filming

London, September 6 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s brother Randy has slammed the “surreptitious” filming of the burial of the late star in Los Angeles.

The former ‘Jackson 5′ singer reacted after a camera kept filming the private ceremony at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park on a hovering helicopter despite the area being a no-fly zone.

“I was dismayed last night and again today at the coverage I saw on television of our ceremony for Michael,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

“We had asked the media to respect the privacy and the sanctity of this event; to give us one moment of privacy to mourn as a family out of the public spotlight.

“Unfortunately, despite a no-fly zone around Forest Lawn, many media organisations decided to ignore our wishes.

“I therefore ask today that media organisations airing helicopter footage of the ceremony we held for my brother immediately pull that footage from their air and refrain from airing it in the future,” he added.

The King of Pop was finally laid to rest after he died of a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs on June 25.

The Los Angeles coroner ruled Jackson’s death as homicide. (ANI)

Indian fans mourn Michel Jackson’s death

New Delhi/ Mumbai, June 26 (ANI): Indian fans of Michael Jackson have expressed grief and shock at the sudden death of the Pop star whose musical genius overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals.

As the news bulletins, radio airwaves and social networking sites remained flooded with tributes for a man called the “King of Pop” and “natural heir to Elvis”, Bollywood actor Govinda recalled that Michael Jackson used to be his favourite during college days.

“I want to say that when we were in college we used to hear a lot about Michael Jackson and used to appreciate him a lot. And we used to talk about him that he is a great star and he reached to that height. We heard a lot about his surgeries and he has always been in news. But all I can say is that god give his soul peace,” said Govinda.

Jacko’s fans in New Delhi expressed grief and shock over his death.

“Michael Jackson death has really shocked his fans across the world. I think he was this century’s greatest singer and dancer. He was also aiming for a return… comeback but I guess that wont happen now. I really feel saddened because of his death,” said Malvin, a local.

“Michael Jackson had fans not only in America but also all over the world. And his death that too at an early age is very-very shocking,” said Akshay Kapoor, another local.

The 50-year-old, whose towering musical legacy was tarnished by often-bizarre behaviour and sex scandals, was pronounced dead on Thursday after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest.

The self-styled “King of Pop,” whose hits included “Thriller” and “Billie Jean,” leaves behind a mountain of debt and an unfulfilled series of comeback concerts set for London in July. Many hoped the shows would rake in millions and erase his financial troubles.

Jackson dominated the charts in the 1980s and sold an estimated 750 million records, a figure that is likely to rise with the expected posthumous re-release of his hits. “Thriller”, which came out in 1982, remains the best-selling album of all time.

Jackson also won 13 Grammy Awards, made boundary-breaking music videos and his slick dance moves were imitated by legions of fans, and fellow pop stars, around the world.

But his preference for the company of children, high-pitched voice, numerous plastic surgeries and life as a virtual recluse earned him many critics and the nickname “Wacko Jacko.” (ANI)

Zimbabwe opposition leader says Mugabe regime ‘collapsing’

Johannesburg, Jan.16 (ANI): Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has claimed that the Robert Mugabe’s regime is ‘collapsing’.

Speaking in Johannesburg, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) told The Daily Telegraph: “It’s already collapsing. They can’t pay the police, they can’t pay soldiers, they can’t pay civil servants.

“There’s a lot more dysfunction in Zanu-PF than we are able to appreciate,” he added.
With ever more shops selling goods only in foreign currency, usually US dollars and South African rand, he pointed out that many state employees were unable to buy anything with their already pitiful wages.

Zimbabwe has been in a political stalemate since September, when a power-sharing agreement was signed between the parties, but it quickly bogged down amid disputes over ministerial allocations made unilaterally by Mugabe and arguments over the two men’s relative power.

Now more than 2,000 people have been killed by an epidemic of cholera, normally a very treatable disease, hyperinflation has accelerated to astronomical levels, and five million people need food aid.

Tsvangirai said his party remained committed to the power-sharing process – which Washington has given up hope for.

But he said that the outstanding issues had to be resolved first so that it led to a functional, as well as an inclusive, government, and the MDC’s patience was finite.

“We have been in struggle for these last 10 years, this democratic struggle and we have met so many frustrating obstacles. I’m sure that when this deal collapses, if it collapses, the MDC will have to find alternative democratic means to put pressure to the regime. We are not going to sit down and cry and mourn,” he said.
He also categorically denied allegations by Harare that the MDC is training volunteers in guerrilla warfare in Botswana “or anywhere else in Africa”, describing it as a figment of Zanu-PF’s imagination.

Analysts say a popular uprising is extremely unlikely, and armed struggle unfeasible.

In an ominous sign for the Mugabe regime, soldiers rioted in Harare last month in protest at being unable to withdraw their salaries from banks. (ANI)
