Susan Sarandon’s daughter Eva Amurri strips for TV show

Melbourne, Sep 18 (ANI): It seems budding actress Eva Amurri is following in her mother Susan Sarandon’s footsteps, for she is playing the role of a student who turns to stripping in the latest series of US hit show ‘Californication’.

Sarandon was known for doing similar roles more than 20 years ago- in ‘The Hunger’ in 1983, she dropped her clothes for a controversial lesbian love scene with Catherine Deneuve and has never shied away from nudity in films.

Oz women under constant pressure to be ‘yummy mummies’

Melbourne, Sept 16 (ANI): The hype created by celebrity yummy mummies like Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba has put women under pressure to lose weight quickly after giving birth, reveals a new Australian study.

The study conducted by Deakin University showed that more than one in four women are “usually or always dissatisfied” with their post-baby body.

Researcher Lucia Bongiorno said that the hype created by celebrity yummy mummies has also contributed to an unrealistic ideal.

“People are obsessed with celebrity babies and celebrity pregnancies,” the Courier Mail quoted her as saying.

“Babies have become a must-have sort of item,” she added.

Although the study involving 346 mothers of infants aged 1-12 months compare themselves with their peers with babies and child-free friends, they felt the most pressure to lose post-baby weight from the media.

Moreover, some fathers also pressured their partners not to gain too much weight while pregnant and to lose it quickly after giving birth.

Bongiorno said while mums compared themselves most to peers, their peers were also likely to be influenced by the same media images.

“Both mothers and their peers with new babies, when confronted by media pictures of celebrity mothers such as Bec Hewitt, are saying ‘I’ve got to look like that’,” she said.

“But celebrity mothers typically have nannies and personal trainers … the average mother doesn’t. So such an expectation is unfair on themselves,” she added.

The study will be presented at the Australian Psychological Society conference in Darwin. (ANI)

Jolie takes adopted daughter Zahara on first visit to native Ethiopia

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie’s eldest daughter Zahara returned to her native Ethiopia for the first time since her adoption four years ago.

The four-year-old flew back home with her mother at the weekend.

It all happened when Jolie, currently in Kenya on a United Nations mission with partner Brad Pitt and their six children, broke away from the trip to cross the border into Ethiopia.

Zahara’s little sister Shiloh, 3, also accompanied them.

However, Pitt and the couple’s other four children stayed behind.

“On a trip to Kenya with their children, Angelina stopped in Dabaab Refugee Camp, and also flew to Ethiopia with Zahara and Shiloh for two days,” Contactmusic quoted a source as having told People.com.

“(It was) the first time Zahara had been back home since her adoption. The trip was about keeping up that culture for her,” the source added.

If reports are to be believed, Jolie is looking for a property to build a tuberculosis and AIDS clinic in Zahara’s name.

The Hollywood couple jointly founded a similar organisation to aid impoverished children-known as the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project-after adopting their eight-year-old son Maddox from Cambodia in 2002. (ANI)

Hefner says he remained married for kids’ sake

London, September 15 (ANI): Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner has said that he postponed his divorce from his estranged second wife for the sake of their children.

The 83-year-old filed for divorce earlier this month, after an 11-year separation from former Playmate of the Year Kimberly Conrad Hefner.

Hefner, presently dating Playmates Crystal Harris, 23, and twins Karissa and Kristina Shannon, 19, said that he waited “because of the children” – his youngest son Cooper turned 18 on September 4.

“Now is the time. I stayed married not because it was a marriage – the marriage ended in 1998. I stayed because she wanted me to,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

The two got married in 1989, and separated nine years later.

They, however, remained legally wed.

Conrad, 47, is the mother of two of Hefner’s four kids, and had for years been supported by him in a home next to the Playboy mansion. (ANI)

Second child within a year ‘increases breast cancer risk’

London, Sept 14 (ANI): Having a second child within a year of the first birth can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer, finds a new study.

The research, involving 30,000 women each of whom had produced five or more children, has shown that those with a gap of less than 12 month were 5.2 times more likely to develop the advanced ductal breast cancer than women who had a gap of three or more years.

Although it is unclear that why the risk increases, researchers believe hormones might be involved.

Alternatively, other risk factors may have influenced the results, including being overweight, and whether or not the mother chooses to breast-feed.

“Women who had their first two births close together should not be worried by these findings because the study’s results are not conclusive,” the Telegraph quoted Josephine Querido, senior science information officer at Cancer Research UK, as saying.

“The researchers looked at a very specific group of women – those who had a specific type of breast cancer, who had advanced tumours, who were under 50, and who had at least five children. In studies like this, dividing the group of people you’re looking at into lots of smaller groups makes it likely that you’ll find a positive result in one of the subgroups just by chance.

“For all women, it’s important to go to the GP if they spot any unusual changes in their breast, and to go for screening when invited,” Querido added.

The study appears in the British Journal of Cancer. (ANI)

‘Overpopulation’ fear makes Rebecca Romijn say no more babies

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Actress Rebecca Romijn has revealed she has no plans of having more children in fear of “overpopulating the world”.

The ‘X-Men’ star, who looks after her eight-month-old twins with husband Jerry O’Connell, said she was happy to have a four-member family.

“I’m pretty sure that this is it. We feel like the world was made for pairs. Four feels like the perfect number,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying to E!.

“Also, we’re not interested in overpopulating this world. So we feel like we don’t want to leave more than we are when we leave this planet,” she added.

The former model also spoke about the heartache about staying away from the kids due to work.

She added: “Mother’s guilt is no joke. I feel like any stretch of time I spend away from them, I’m worried that I’m missing out on just these little miracles.

“Like you watch them stare at their hand for an hour and they go take a three-hour nap and they wake up and they can do something that they didn’t do before – like wave!” (ANI)

Macca says Beatles overindulged in drugs

Washington, Sept 11 (ANI): Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is amazed he and his band mates survived the excessive drug habit they had in their heyday.

The singer admits that the Fab Four overindulged in drugs, often falling asleep during recording sessions.

“(We were) overdoing substances and really getting crazy, as we all were… (We’d be) falling asleep – the kinda thing when you can hardly get your head off the pillow. You go, ‘Woah, I’d better get my head off this pillow,’” McCartney was quoted by Contactmusic as saying in the U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight.

However, the 67-year-old star also confessed it was during on such drug session that he wrote the Beatles classic Let It Be.

He said: “I had a dream, where my mother, who had been dead, by then, 10 years came to me in the dream and was very sort of helpful and very calming, and it was lovely just to see her… and she said, ‘Don’t worry about it… Let it be.’

“I went, ‘OK’, and I felt so good… and I woke up and wrote Let It Be. I thought, ‘That’s a good idea for a song.’” (ANI)

Kelly Osbourne blames her DNA for drug addiction

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): ‘Dancing with the Stars’ contestant Kelly Osbourne has blamed her genes for her drug addiction.

Kelly’s father, rockstar Ozzy Osbourne, has had a long struggle with drugs, which makes her believe her DNA was pre-programmed to make her an addict.

“The only people in my family who don’t have that gene are my mother and my sister Amy.

“I consider myself lucky that I saw both sides of it. Drugs stop you from screaming on the outside, but you are still screaming on the inside.

“I was addicted by 16. Drugs stopped me from feeling a certain way. Some people experience euphoria but I never felt that. They numbed me and gave me confidence.

It was like a magic medicine.”

The 24-year-old Kelly has been in rehab four times and is presently drug free. (ANI)

S. African athlete Semenya tries to gloss over gender controversy

Johannesburg, Sep.9 (ANI): South African athlete Caster Semenya has completed her transformation from gender troubled sporting champion into national celebrity with a photo shoot in the country’s leading gossip magazine.

While the controversy rumbles on over whether the teenage runner is really male or female, her handlers have sought to end the debate with the aid of a costume change, make up and some studio lights.

With the front cover headline: “Wow, look at Caster now!” You magazine proudly boasts that it has turned her from “power girl” into “glamour girl” and apparently, “she loves it”.

Inside, the 800 m world champion – whose gender is being tested by the international athletics authorities – says the whole issue is a joke.

“It doesn’t upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself. I am who I am and I’m proud of myself,” The Sun quoted Semenya, as saying.

In the magazine, Semenya poses in skinny jeans, stilettos and a black and white evening dress.

News that the athlete would have to undergo testing was leaked before the 800m final at the world championships in Berlin, putting her under enormous pressure.

Following her victory, the ruling African National Congress seized upon her case to score political points, with left-wing firebrands such as Winnie Madikizela Mandela and ANC Youth League president Julius Malema accusing the athletics authorities of racism.

They have also sought to use Semenya to stir up populist feeling against what is seen as the right wing of the ANC, represented by Trevor Manuel, President Jacob Zuma’s planning chief.

Semenya received a heroine’s welcome in her home village in South Africa’s impoverished Limpopo province at the end of August, with VIPs and a 200-strong crowd singing a version of the Communist Party anthem, which included the lyrics: “My mother was a kitchen girl, my father was a garden boy, that’s why I’m a champion, that’s why I’m a champion.”

The cover shoot has reignited the debate in South Africa over the athlete’s appearance, with radio talk shows inundated with callers.

The 18-year-old has refused to be drawn on what she is going through at present, telling the magazine: “I don’t want to talk about the tests – I’m not even thinking about them.” (ANI)

Donkeys help five-year-old to “find his voice”

London, Sept 8 (ANI): Donkeys have helped a five-year-old boy suffering from selective mutism – a severe childhood anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations -to “find his voice”.

Edward Wright was diagnosed with selective mutism at the age two.

His mother, Michelle, says she wasn’t worried initially but gradually she could not help noticing his silence.

The Daily Express quoted her as saying: “I was worried…He’d chat at home but if we were in a supermarket or at the doctors he wouldn’t say a word. It was as if he was scared of people he didn’t know hearing his voice.”

“At nursery he’d point to pictures of what he wanted to do each day rather than telling the staff. At first we thought he was just shy,” she added.

Although Edward’s family could not understand his behaviour, his speech therapist said his symptoms showed he was suffering from selective mutism.

Edward’s special coordinater suggested visits to a donkey-riding centre might help.

The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust (EST) For Children And Donkeys is situated on the outskirts of Leeds.

Every week nearly 150 children with disabilities and special needs spend time with the donkeys here.

Michelle explained: “The idea was that the games and activities Edward would do with the donkeys might help him overcome whatever was stopping him talking.”

Edward attended sessions at the centre last September and showed marked improvement in the weeks to follow.

Michelle said: “Gradually he became more confident…after a few weeks he began whispering commands into the donkeys’ ears. Later he would say instructions out loud to stop and start them while riding. It was lovely to see.”

She added: “At school he now talks to friends in the playground and he answers teachers when they ask questions. Every day he has an hour or two of speech therapy which also helps.

“Edward talks about the donkeys a lot, especially his favourite one Eeyore. The donkeys really have helped him find his voice.” (ANI)

Kourtney, 30, who is expecting her first child with Disick, admits that her hormones are affecting her temperament, but she is doing her best to try not to be rude to those close to her.

“Scott keeps getting scared. But he’s been great with my mood swings so far. He’s like, ‘Just take a deep breath,’” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“He heard that with the last three months of a pregnancy you have really extreme mood swings so he was joking, ‘Oh, you’re not going to believe the mood swings!’” she said.

But it is not only her partner who has been getting the sharp end of her tongue, her family, including sisters Kim and Khloe and mother Kris, have also been suffering.

“If I’m just trying to pick a fight with someone and if I’m around Scott or my mom, then they’ll probably get it worst,” she told People magazine.

“If someone is annoying me – usually my mom – I’ll call Khloe and it’ll make me feel better because she’ll agree with me.

“I throw b***h fits. The other day, I was like, ‘This house is such a mess! Now that Scott’s living in my house, there’s stuff everywhere! We need to get it organised!’ Everything I had to do, I blamed it on Scott,” she added. (ANI)

Uncle Sam serves up tax bill to Philippoussis

Melbourne, Sep.6 (ANI): Tennis ace Mark Philippoussis is being chased by the US taxman and has sold his Williamstown family home to avoid having it repossessed.

It has now emerged that the US Internal Revenue Service has pursued the Scud for about 1.4 million dollars during the past decade.

US records show the IRS still wants about 500,000 dollars for tax debts dating back to 2003.

Philippoussis, who according to his mother is playing in a tournament in San Diego, revealed to the Sunday Herald Sun in May that his money was gone, he was depressed and he was battling to save the family home from repossession.

“Money came in left, right and centre; you just thought that’s how it was for everyone and that’s how it always will be,” he said at the time.

The Davis Cup hero put his Williamstown home on the market to avoid having it repossessed over his unpaid 1.3 million dollar mortgage, but it was passed in for 775,000 dollars in July.

Wayne Elly, of Hocking Stuart, yesterday confirmed Scud’s house had sold recently for about the asking price of 950,000 dollars.

Philippoussis once owned at least five properties in the US, selling the last one in 2005 at a loss.

Official US records suggest he still owes about 180,000 dollars for the 2004 financial year and about 317,000 dollars from 2003.

A former tax debt for about 918,000 dollars dating back to 2001 was satisfied in 2004, according to the Palm Beach County records office.

The IRS would not comment this week, but a US tax expert said the documents suggested the agency was confident it could recoup the debt. (ANI)
