Pakistan High Commission celebrates ”Pakistan National Day”

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi celebrated ”Pakistan National Day” on Tuesday with fervour.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Pakistani national flag by Pakistan High Commissioner to India Shahid Malik followed by the national anthem of Pakistan.

The children presented a colourful programme in the presence of Pakistani diplomats to mark the occasion.

It was on March 23 in 1940 that Mohammad Ali Jinnah demanded the creation of a separate Muslim state of Pakistan.

Jinnah espoused the ”Two Nation Theory” and led the Muslim League to adopt the Lahore Resolution of 1940, demanding the formation of independent states for Muslims in the East and the West of British India.

Eventually, a united Pakistan with two wings – West Pakistan and East Pakistan – gained independence from the British, on August 14, 1947. (ANI)

Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan: Gilani

Islamabad, Sep.20 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yosuf Raza Gilani is back to singing his ‘K-tune’ by describing Kashmir as Pakistan’s jugular vein.

Interacting with a group of political leaders during an Iftaar party at the PM House here, Gilani said Islamabad’s policy on Kashmir was based on Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s stance that “Kashmir was the jugular vein of Pakistan.”

Referring to the government’s recent decision to grant internal autonomy to Gilgit-Baltistan, Gilani said Pakistan’s stand on Kashmir would remain unchanged.

“I want to express in clear and unequivocal terms that this decision of the government will not bring any change in Pakistan’s principled stand on Kashmir,” Gilani said.

Gilani blamed India of neglecting the long pending Kashmir issue and said that Pakistan wants a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

“We want to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully and have invited India for negotiations, despite it repeatedly ignoring them,” The Daily times quoted Gilani, as saying.

Gilani said he had categorically told Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during their meeting at the margins of the NAM summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh earlier this year that resolving the issue was very important for establishing peace in the region.

“There could be no peace in the region until the Kashmir dispute was resolved according to the aspirations of its people,” he added. (ANI)

Police swoop on sellers of Jaswant Singh’s pirated book in Pak

Lahore, Sep.18 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh’s book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah has sent the Pakistani book piracy nexus working overtime, but it has also landed people in police custody.

Pakistani security agencies have arrested three people for selling pirated editions of the book ‘Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence,’ following a countrywide crackdown on publishers and sellers of counterfeit editions of the controversial yet popular book.

Several fake copies of the book have also been recovered and cases have been registered in Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Lahore, The Daily Times reported.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials said the action was taken on a complaint filed by Tariq Haq, regional sales head of the Oxford University Press (OUP).

Tariq said the OUP had the sole rights of publication and distribution of the book and the company is facing heavy losses due to large scale piracy of the book.

Singh’s book which has created a furor in India, has received an overwhelming response in Pakistan.

Not only intellectuals, but people from different strata of the society have also shown interest in the book, in which Singh has praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah and described him as a leader who had strong faith in united India, while blaming Sardar Patel for the partition in 1947. (ANI)

Jaswant Singh reaffirms his support for Gorkhaland

Bagdogra (West Bengal), Sept 16 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh has said that his support to the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state remains unchanged despite his ouster from the party.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, he said that not only he, even his former party BJP is committed to the cause of Gorkhaland.

“My support to Gorkhaland remains the same. There is no change. That is the commitment I have made, which is personal and political. The BJP, which is my former party, has also affirmed that their position on Gorkhaland is unaltered. We support the creation of Gorkhaland as a separate state,” said Jaswant Singh.

Presently, Singh is on a five-day visit to Darjeeling and other areas. This is his first visit after being expelled from the BJP.

Jaswant Singh was expelled from the BJP for applauding Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan in his controversial book ‘Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence’.

His expulsion came as a big blow to the members of the ethnic Gorkha community, who have sought a separate state to be carved out from West Bengal.

The Gorkhas have contended that the issue of Gorkhaland was spelt out in the election manifesto of BJP and as such Singh’s ouster will have change the party’s stand and it will abide by the pre-poll promises spelt out in the manifesto.

At least 1,200 people died in the first Gorkhaland campaign in the 1980s. The mass protests ended a few years later after Gorkha leaders accepted limited autonomy with the formation of a Hills Council.

However, this mechanism did not work out successfully, leading to the split in the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), the forerunner of Gorkhaland agitation.

Subash Gheising, the founder of GNLF was ousted and his opponents formed the parallel Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

The GJM canvassed extensively for the election of Jaswant Singh. (ANI)

VHP leader accuses Advani of using Ayodhya issue for personal gains

New Delhi, Sep. 9 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal on Wednesday accused BJP leader LK Advani of taking out the Rath Yatra for personal political gain.

Advani, he said, should now think about stepping down from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He also noted that the BJP had deviated from its founding policies and that is the reason for its apparent ‘sinking’.

Singhal’s statements coincide with the times when the saffron party is facing rough weather and controversies have become an order of the day.

The no-show in Lok Sabha polls, revelation on Advani’s lie on the Kandhar episode, Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his subsequent expulsion from the party are the several episodes which hit the party’s image badly. (ANI)

Gujarat Govt may appeal against HC verdict in Jaswant Singh’s book ban case

New Delhi, Sep. 8 (ANI): The Gujarat Government is planning to file an appeal against the state High Court’s verdict against its decision of banning Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Supreme Court was told on Tuesday.

The state government counsel conveyed this to the apex during the hearing of a petition filed by Singh challenging the ban on his book ‘Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence’.

The apex court admitted a petition and posted the matter for further hearing on October 20.

A Bench comprising Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph said: “Since the notification challenged in the writ petition has been struck down, no interim order is required to be passed at this stage.” (ANI)

Advani, BJP leaders have not discussed a succession plan: Javadeka

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): Leader of Opposition L. K. Advani and other leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not discussion a succession plan, as was being projected in the media, said a party spokesman on Saturday.

Prakash Javadekar told a press conference that the BJP’s parent organization – the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) had not chalked out a succession plan on Friday, and neither had the BJP leadership discussed the issue at Saturday’s meeting at Advani’s residence in the national capital.

‘No succession plan was discussed. No change in leadership or posts was discussed,” Javadekar, adding that over the past couple of days, the RSS had only come forward with suggestions that could “Pave the way for a more smooth functioning of the BJP”.

Reacting to the comments that were being aired in the media by expelled party leader Jaswant Singh against the BJP and its present leadership, Javadekar said:

“We continue to respect Jaswant Singh even after his comments. We don’t want to say anything. But the fact of the matter is that if a leader who once belonged to the BJP and spoke well of it while he was a member for years, now chooses to criticize its policies on the hour, the people will realize soon enough who is right and who is wrong.”

Jaswant Singh has been targeting Advani on the latter’s views on Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and his role in the 1999 Kandahar hijack case and the July 2008 Cash for Vote scam.

Javadekar’s statement to the media came as Advani arrived at the RSS’s Delhi headquarters – Keshavkunj – for a meeting with its chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The meeting is taking place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP, a plan that could facilitate an end to the internal crisis ravaging the party’s rank and file.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. In a sign that this is being given serious thought, top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence this morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had joined other party colleagues – Arun Jaitely, Ananth Kumar and M.Venkaiah Naidu at the residence of Advani to reportedly discuss a viable succession plan.

It is reliably learnt that though there are no immediate changes in the top leadership, a succession plan is being readied after discussions with the RSS on Friday night.

Sources said that the RSS has firmly asked BJP leaders to end infighting in the party and reach a consensus on a new party chief.

The decision to call Jaitley and Swaraj together to a meeting at the RSS headquarters is seen as very significant, as they are the leading contenders for the party leadership, sparking speculation that a power-sharing arrangement might have been arrived at.

Jaitley looks the front-runner for the party chief’s job while Swaraj is tipped to take over from Advani as Leader of Opposition. If implemented, the party could see Naidu becoming Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, a post currently held by Jaitley.

The RSS has felt that if the factionalism is not quickly resolved, the issue could prolong till the end of the year. (ANI)

What ex-RSS chief Sudarshan said about Jinnah is right: Bhagwat

New Delhi, Aug.28 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that what his predecessor K.S. Sudarshan had said two days ago about Pakistan Founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah is right.

“What Sudarshanji said is right, RSS holds all in high esteem,” said Bhagwat

He further said that the perception of the Muslim community about RSS is changing

Surdarshan said on Monday that Jinnah was committed to an undivided India.

“Jinnah had many facets. If you look at history, he was once associated with Lokmanya Tilak and was totally committed to undivided India,” Sudarshan said when asked if he considered the Muslim League leader secular.

“And when Gandhiji started the Khilafat movement, with the idea that currently we are opposing the British and if Muslims join in then their support will help gain independence. But at that time Jinnah opposed it saying that if the Caliph in Turkey has been dethroned, what has India got to do with it. That time nobody listened to him, which saddened him. So, he quit the Congress and left for England and only returned in 1927.

“After returning in 1927, Britishers brainwashed Jinnah and prompted him to put forth the demand for a separate state of Pakistan for Muslims,” Sudarshan added.

Sudarshan said that everybody knows history, and added had Gandhiji been adamant, like when he was on giving crores of rupees to Pakistan, then the partition would not have taken place. “But he did not do it because Nehru was his weakness.”

Commenting on Singh’s expulsion from BJP, he said: “It is an internal matter of the party.”

RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav had then sought to clarify Sudarshan’s remarks, saying the former Sangh chief did not mean to say that Jinnah wasn’t responsible for the partition of the Indian subcontinent.

Bhagwat had on August 18 called for an end to factionalism in the BJP, the political wing of the Sangh Parivar, and said the party leadership should make way for younger leaders.

The expulsion of Jaswant Singh, two days after the launch of his latest book-Jinnah: India -Partition – Independence, has been criticised by senior leaders Arun Shourie and Yashwant Sinha. Shourie has called on the RSS to take over the leadership of the BJP. (ANI)

After Jaswant Singh, former RSS chief heaps praise on Jinnah

New Delhi, Aug 25 (ANI): Former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, who was expelled from the BJP for his remarks on Mohammad Ali Jinnah, got support from unexpected quarters when former RSS chief S Surdarshan called the Muslim League leader a one time supporter of undivided India.

Singh was expelled from the BJP for calling Jinnah “a great man” in his new book, “Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence”.

Following in the footsteps of party’s senior leader L.K. Advani, Singh had called Jinnah, a great Indian, and admitted that he has been attracted by Jinnah’s personality. Singh had blamed India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the partition.

Surdarshan said on Monday that Pakistan founder Jinnah was committed to undivided India.

So he quit the Congress and left for England and only returned in 1927.

Meanwhile, RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav has sought to clarify Sudarshan’s remarks, saying the former Sangh chief did not mean to say that Jinnah wasn’t responsible for partition.

Earlier, Sudheendra Kulkarni, who quit the BJP over ideological differences with its present leadership, had equated one time mentor Advani with expelled party leader Jaswant Singh in so far as remarks on Jinnah are concerned.

Kulkarni described the expulsion of Jaswant Singh as unfortunate, and as a graceless and baseless action. (ANI)

Swaraj alludes to Raje’s possible expulsion from the BJP

Shimla, Aug.21 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, on Friday indirectly hinted that former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje could be removed from the party on grounds of indiscipline.

Without directly confirming plans to remove Raje, Swaraj alluded at a press conference held here that: “The BJP has removed the party’s state level leadership in those states where it performed poorly in the (state and general) elections.”

In this context, she also gave the examples of B.C Khanduri who was replaced as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand by Ramesh Pokhriyal, Om Mathur who was replaced by Arun Chaturvedi as the BJP’s Rajasthan unit president and Krishnapal Gurjar coming in place of Atam Prakash Manchanda as president of the BJP’s Haryana unit.

Raje is expected in the national capital New Delhi today, and is likely to meet Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader L.K.Advani at his residence on Saturday.

It maybe recalled that last week when she was asked by the party to step down as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan State Assembly, Raje had in a show of strength sent more than 60 MLAs and MPs to the national capital to convince the BJP”s central leadership that she enjoyed the full support of the state unit, and therefore, there were no grounds for her removal as Leader of Opposition.

Swaraj also justified the expulsion of Jaswant Singh from the party, saying it was necessary to restore and maintain the party’s ideological stance.

She told reporters here on the last day of the three-day ‘Chintan Baithak’ of the BJP that Jaswant Singh, as a political leader with over three decades of experience, had deliberately sought to denigrate India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel and his achievements and had showered wholesome praise on Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Founder of Pakistan in his latest book “Jinnah India Partition Independence”.

“It was very difficult, but necessary to expel Jaswant Singh. It was a very tough decision to remove a colleague of last thirty years,” she said.

Countering Jaswant Singh’s statement of Thursday evening that Patel was the country’s first Home Minister to ban the BJP’s parent organization – the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) shortly after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in January 1948, Swaraj said: “It was (Jawaharlal) Nehru’s intention to ban the RSS, and not Patel’s.”

Recalling a letter that Patel had written to Nehru, Swaraj said that Patel wrote: “I have been following the investigations, and there is no iota of evidence against the RSS.”

She also emphasized that coalition politics in India was here to stay to fight the “hegemony” of the Congress party.

Historically, she said that Shyama Prasad Moorkerjee, was the first person to initiate coalition politics in the country with the formation of the Jana Sangh in the 1950s. The aim then was to counter the Congress, and that tradition continues, she said.

She confirmed that three-day Chintan Baithak had thoroughly discussed the pro’s and con’s of coalition politics. (ANI)

Book on Nehru would have gone ‘unnoticed’ in Pak: PML-N

Islamabad, Aug.21 (ANI): Expressing solidarity with expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has criticized the BJP for throwing Singh out of the party for writing a book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah, saying if anybody would have written a book on Jawaharlal Nehru in Pakistan, it would have not created such a furor.

Interacting with media persons here, PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq said Singh’s expulsion has exposed the ‘narrow-mindedness’ of BJP towards Muslim leaders.

“I don’t understand why there is so much resentment among the BJP over Jaswant Singh’s book. If anybody in Pakistan had written a praiseworthy book on Nehru, nobody in Pakistan would have noticed it,” he said.

Haq said the incident has proved that discrimination still prevailed in India despite its claims of being a democratic country.

“Whether it is Congress or the BJP, the thinking and approach of Indian political parties is the same towards Pakistan and Muslims,” The Daily Times quoted Haq, as saying.

He added that BJP’s ‘shameful’ act has exposed secularism in the Indian society.

Singh was expelled from the BJP on Wednesday for writing a book-Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence- which, according to the party, was against the basic ideology of the party. (ANI)

VHP hails Jaswant’s expulsion, RSS avoids comment

New Delhi, Aug.19 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)on Wednesday welcomed the expulsion of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh for eulogising Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his book, saying it would send the right signals to the BJP’s legislators and functionaries.

“We take this judgement as a positive sign. This expulsion will have positive effects on the lawmakers of the party and the party workers as well,” VHP President Giriraj Kishore told mediapersons in national capital.

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), however, said it was not concerned with the controversy.

“This is not our subject,” RSS chief Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat said when asked to comment on Singh’s ouster.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), gave a cautious reactions on the expulsion.

“Jinnah is respected the same way in Pakistan as Gandhiji is respected in India. I don’t want to comment on it. It is their party’s internal matter,” said RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Newspapers quoted Jaswant Singh’s book “Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence”, as saying that Pakistan’s founder was ‘demonised in India’.(ANI)

BJP cannot shun support to Gorkhaland with Jaswant’s expulsion: GJM

Siliguri, Aug.19 (ANI): Members of the ethnic Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on Wednesday said that the expulsion of their legislator Jaswant Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party would neither affect their demand for autonomous Gorkhaland and nor could BJP back out from its promise on the issue.

Jaswant Singh has been elected to Lok Sabha from Darjeeling parliamentary constituency.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha wants a separate state to be carved out from West Bengal.

Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), the organisation demanding separate statehood, said that Jaswant Singh was still their lawmaker and hoped that he would continue to work for them.

“Jaswant Singh has been expelled from the party but he is still a member of the Parliament from Darjeeling. His political and personnel figure remains intact and has vast experience of 40 year in Indian politics. We expect that he would continue to work here and his expulsion would not have any effect,” said Hemant Gautam, a leader of GJMM.

The members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha were reacting after hearing the news about Jaswant Singh being expelled from the primary membership of BJP on Wednesday (August 19).

Earlier in the day, the apex leadership of BJP which is presently meeting at Shimla in Himachal Pradesh expelled him over his book applauding Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan in his recently released book.

The book ‘Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence’, has triggered a political storm in the country.

Newspapers quoted Jaswant Singh’s book, as saying that Pakistan’s founder was ‘demonised in India’.

Jaswant Singh was elected from Darjeeling parliamentary constituency after the BJP extended its support to the call of Gorkhaland.

The Gorkha population in West Bengal is around one million out of 80 million people, although the overwhelming majority are concentrated in Darjeeling. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi calls Advani a slave of the RSS

Bidar (Karnataka), Apr 15 (ANI): Continuing her attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday termed him a “slave of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)”.

Addressing an election rally here, Sonia Gandhi called Advani incompetent and a leader who couldn’t take decisions on his own.

“It is Advani, who is a slave of the RSS because he wants to protect his chair. This is the reason why he fulfills each and every wish of the RSS,” claimed Gandhi.

Condemning Advani for repeatedly calling Manmohan Singh a weak Prime Minister, Gandhi asked Advani whether he could take any decision without fear of the RSS.

She further accused Advani of rendering a “secular certificate” to Mohammad Ali Jinnah during his visit to Pakistan in 2005.

Advani, who was the BJP chief then, had resigned from his post following widespread criticism by the RSS and its allied bodies for his statement in Pakistan praising Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

She blamed the BJP for being “sympathetic towards terrorists” and pointed out that it was the NDA, which had permitted the release of terrorists during the 1999 Kandahar plane hijack episode.

Taking credit for handling the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case efficiently, Gandhi said the “diplomatic tackling of the Mumbai terror attacks by the UPA Government had compelled Pakistan to concede responsibility on the issue”.

Noting the achievements of her party, Sonia asserted that the Congress had achieved a lot for the nation since its independence from British colonial rule.

She said that the Congress had taken initiatives in several development projects including modernisation of the country, nationalisation of banks, empowerment of women through Panchayat Raj institutions or signing the nuclear agreement. (ANI)
