The mobile number that rang the death knell

London, May 26 (IANS) The Bulgarian mobile phone number – 0888 888 888 – has been suspended after every person who used it in the past 10 years died. The last man to own it was gunned down outside an Indian restaurant in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Vladimir Grashnov, former CEO of Bulgarian mobile phone company Mobitel, was the first user and he died of cancer in 2001. He was 48.

The number was then assigned to Bulgarian mafia boss Konstantin Dimitrov. He was shot dead down in 2003 in the Netherlands. He was 31.

Dimitrov had the mobile phone with him when he was shot while eating out with a model, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The exclusive number then passed on to businessman Konstantin Dishliev who was shot dead outside an Indian restaurant in Sofia in 2005. Dishliev had been running a cocaine trafficking operation before he was killed.

The phone number has now been suspended. Callers get to hear the message that the phone is outside network coverage.

A Mobitel spokesperson said: ‘We have no comment to make. We won’t discuss individual numbers.’

Over 50 pct Facebook users could delete accounts over privacy worries

London, May 20 (ANI): A security firm has suggested that more than half of Facebook users are considering deleting their profile from the site because of privacy concerns.

According to Sophos, a computer security organisation, concerns about privacy are running so high that 60 percent of the 1,588 Facebook users questioned said they were considering deleting their accounts.

A further 16 percent said they had already stopped using Facebook because they felt they had inadequate control over their data, while a quarter said that they would not be quitting the social networking site, which has almost 500 million users worldwide.

Facebook has attracted criticism in recent weeks for the perceived complexity of its privacy settings, and the fact that users have to opt-out of sharing some of their information with third parties, rather than give explicit consent by opting in.

Although Facebook is expected to look again at its privacy policy in the coming days, it may not be enough to halt an online campaign for a mass Facebook “suicide” on May 31, with thousands of users encouraged to delete their accounts.

“This poll shows that the majority of users are fed up with the lack of control that Facebook gives users over their data,” the Telegraph quoted Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, as saying.

“Most still don”t know how to set their Facebook privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing.

“What”s needed is a fundamental shift towards asking users to ”opt-in” to sharing information, rather than to ”opt-out”.

“A mass exodus from Facebook seems unlikely, but users are clearly getting more interested in knowing precisely who can view their data.

“People use Facebook to share private information and are unlikely to want their holiday snaps or new mobile number accidentally popping up all over the Internet,” he added. (ANI)

Brit girl risks Dubai jail by telling cops she was raped after boozy night out

London, April 19 (ANI): A British girl is said to have risked being jailed in Dubai by telling cops that she was raped after a boozy night out.

The 24-year-old trading company executive, who has been identified only as Lucy, said that the 30-year-old Arab man insisted on giving her a lift home after a night out drinking with pals at the Dubai Marina.

And then he allegedly drove her to the remote area and attacked her, before taking her back to her flat and raping her again on her bed.

The accused man told police that she agreed to sleep with him, and now if her account of what happened is not believed, she could face prison for drinking and having sex outside marriage in the strict Muslim state.

“She told police she screamed and cried out begging him to stop during both attacks which were entirely against her will,” the Sun quoted a Dubai court source as saying.

“She went straight to the nearest police station and reported the sex attack at 3.20am the same day,” the source said.

Cops were immediately able to find the alleged attacker, named only as Saif, as the woman had saved his mobile number when they were introduced earlier in the night.

“The case will be heard in full before a judge who will decide who is telling the truth, but the girl may face difficulties if her story is not believed,” the source revealed.

“She is still regarded as the victim at this stage, though she has already admitted being drunk, which is itself an offence in Dubai.

“And if the court finds in the man”s favour, she could face a charge of having unlawful sex as well which might land her in jail for a year followed by deportation,” the source added.

The alleged rape in January is the latest to spark anxiety among ex-pats in Dubai.

A date for the rape trial will be set later this year. (ANI)

Trai caps fee on mobile porting at a low Rs 19

Mobile users will pay at most Rs 19 to retain their old number each time they switch service provider. That’s the porting charge ceiling set by telecom regulator Trai on Friday in the run-up to the launch of mobile number portability (MNP) in category A circles from January and the rest of the country by next March. However, under Trai regulations issued in July, mobile users will have to wait 90 days before they can switch networks.

The porting charge is a fee paid to an MNP service provider by the mobile operator that a subscriber wishes to switch to. Operators are likely to pass on this cost to incoming subscribers. The country’s 22 circles have been equally divided between two operators chosen to implement MNP: Syniverse Technologies (north and western India) and Telcordia (east and southern India).

The porting charge fixed by Trai is significantly lower than the Rs 200 it recommended in 2006. Explaining the reduced ceiling, Trai chairman JS Sarma told FE, “We have extensively gone through the cost data given to us by the two MNP service providers. We have considered a period of five years for the total capital expenditure and taken into account 15% as return on capital employed to calculate the porting charges.”

Number portability will be implemented almost a year-and-a-half after the government issued guidelines for the MNP service licence in August 2008.

DoT planning to introduce 11 digits numbering system for CDMA and GSM mobile phones

Your CDMA and GSM numbers are likely to be expanded to 11 digits by early next year! Yes, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which, onetime maintained that the ten-digit mobile number system will go on for the next 30 years in India, is now considering introducing 11 digits numbering system.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in its National Numbering Plan (NNP) 2003, stated, “When subscriber base in an SDCA (short distance charging area, or a circle in common parlance) expands beyond 4 crore, changeover from 10-digit to 11-digit may be required. However, this scenario is not envisaged almost for another 30 years.”

According to DoT, it is compelled to considering 11 digits numbering system because of the current growth of mobile subscribers. The rough base limit for the 10 digit number system is about 450 million subscribers, which is likely to be crossed by the next year. With 15 million mobile subscribers increasing every month, the current number of mobile subscribers 376 million (at the end of February, 2009) is likely to cross the limit (450 million) in next 10-15 months. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reported that there were 375.74 million wireless subscribers in India, at the end of February 2009.

“An 11-digit numbering framework will cause minimum disturbance to existing mobile phone users,” the DoT officials said. According to DoT officials, the switching over from 10 to 11 digits numbering system will require addition of a number before or at the end of current number system; possibly number “9” will be prefixed or suffixed to the current number system. The DoT officials said, “According to international norms, mobile phone numbers in a country should have a uniform number of digits.”

Currently, only two countries China (with 624.16 million mobile subscribers as in January) and United Kingdom use 11-digit number system. United Kingdom’s number of wireless subscribers is much lower, but still its uses 11-digit numbers for technical reasons. As in January, there were 276.1 million wireless subscribers in United States, 181.5 million in Russia, 145 million in Brazil, 117 million in Indonesia, 106 million in Germany, 104.83 million in Japan, 92.8 million in Italy, and 90.52 million in Pakistan.

Cop killed for gun, 3 held

NEW DELHI: The operation cell of the northwest district police recently arrested three people for being allegedly involved in the murder of
constable Vijay Kumar, who was killed on March 2 . The victim was posted at the Jehangirpuri police station.

According to N S Bundela, DCP (northwest), the accused have been identified as Kuldeep (22), Sanjeev (39) and his younger brother Rajender (30). While Kuldeep, a civil defence volunteer, is a resident of Jehangirpuri, the accused brothers stay at Swaroop Nagar.

According to Bundela, Vijay went missing during the course of his night duty on March 1. “We initially thought that he had gone home. But when his family informed us that he had established no contact with them, we lodged a missing FIR on March 5 and a subsequent kidnapping case in the middle of the month,” he said.

Initially, the police questioned Kuldeep with whom Vijay was last seen. “He told us that he had dropped Vijay at the police station around 10.30pm. Since, Vijay too worked on the same city park beat as Kuldeep, we did not doubt his words. A few days later, we came to know of a mobile number which Kuldeep was using and about which we had no information . The number was used extensively on the night of March 1. We asked Kuldeep to rejoin investigations but he escaped around March 13 and even applied for anticipatory bail. We ultimately nabbed him along with Sanjeev on April 2. At their instance we also arrested Rajender,” said Bundela.

During interrogation, the accused admitted to their crime. “Sanjeev told us that he wanted to kill Vijay as he wanted his 9mm weapon so that he could get even with a few property dealers. Kuldeep was enraged as Vijay had once slapped him in front of the public,” said Bundela.

“Kuldeep took Vijay to Sanjeev’s residence where they consumed liquor. Kuldeep shot Vijay twice from his pistol while Rajender cut his throat with a knife to prevent any noise. The trio then disposed off the body at Sahibabad,” Bundela added.

While Sanjeev received training as a home guard in 2005, he never joined it formally. His brother Rajender works at a mobile repairing shop.
