Don’t blame us for player errors say beauty queens

(Reuters) – Brazilian and Ivorian players will have to keep their eyes on the ball not the 31 beauty queens who will be at the Soccer City stadium later on Sunday to avoid a repeat of a controversy surrounding Spain’s defeat last week.

Sports

British media had suggested the presence of Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ glamorous reporter girlfriend near the touchline had distracted him allowing Switzerland to score the winning goal in the first major upset of the World Cup.

But beauty queens representing all of the teams at the tournament — except for secretive North Korea — on the way to Sunday’s match said wives and girlfriends should be at matches to offer support to players, adding they would offer motivation rather than distraction.

“Don’t blame us — I don’t think that she was the main cause of the loss,” said Miss Honduras Blaise Massey in reference to Spanish journalist Sara Carbonero.

Miss Switzerland Bianca Sissing said: “Having a girlfriend (there) might even be motivating.”

North Korea had not held a beauty pageant to be able to compete in Miss World in 2010, said Miss South Korea Yun Seo-choi, but she said she was behind their soccer team.

“They were really fighting hard, I support them as well,” she said. “At some point it’s kind of sad that we can’t play together in one team — one day I hope that we can play altogether but now I am proud of them.”

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), May 16 (ANI): Manasvi Mamgai, who won the coveted title of Pantaloons Femina Miss India (PFMI) India World 2010, has expressed a desire to work for the animals cause.

“Since my childhood, I have a soft corner for animals, and I am trying to have some sort of association, I am trying to visit the hospital for animals, which is the only one in Uttarakhand,” said Mamgai.

“I think they are doing a fabulous job, and if I can generate awareness about it and make my contribution to this cause, I think I will feel blessed,” she added on her visit to her hometown.

Talking about the opportunity to represent India, Mamgai said: “There is a lot of responsibility as we have not won the international crown for some years now, so there is a lot of pressure and since my childhood I had a dream of becoming Miss World.”

“I wish you all will support and pray for me, so that I can win the crown and make my country and state feel proud,” she added.

Kisnorbo set to miss World Cup

Australian defender Patrick Kisnorbo is set to miss the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa due to an Achilles tendon injury, according to his Leeds United club manager Simon Grayson.

The Socceroos defender was carried off in the early stages of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Millwall at Elland Road on Monday.

Grayson said the 28-year-old former Hearts and Leicester defender, who has been on the fringes of the Australia squad, now had little chance of featuring for Pim Verbeek’s team in South Africa.

“Unfortunately for Paddy, he has got a severe Achilles injury, which will rule him out of the rest of the season and probably the World Cup as well,” Grayson said.

“He’s been outstanding for us all season and I’m gutted for him because his dream was to play in the World Cup and it looks like it has been shattered.”

Australia has been drawn in Group D with Germany, Serbia and Ghana for the June 11-July 11 finals in South Africa.

Fergie loves Europe for its cigars, perfume and women

London, May 19 (ANI): Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed just why he loves the Champions League – cigars, perfume and continental women.

“England is about tribalism. You’ve these different countries in one big country. That tribalism forces you to do well in the Premier League but the real excitement comes in Europe.

The Wednesday night atmosphere when you, maybe, go to Madrid and Barcelona. You can smell the cigars and there’s perfume wafting down from the stands. It’s wonderful, it’s different.

I love it. You go to Milan and everyone’s so stylish. Every woman who passes you by is Miss World. The whole atmosphere at these places is unreal,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.
It will be in Rome, too, on May 27 when United take part in the dream final against Barcelona.

Ferguson could not be more confident about the spectacle – and the outcome. e added: “I’m as confident as I possibly can be, simply because we’ve won the League. We’re going there with a fresh team. (ANI)

Miss India finale to be held tomorrow

MUMBAI: After weeks of intense training and grooming, the 20 finalists of the country’s biggest beauty contest will face their moment of reckoning
tomorrow. The grand finale of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India (PFMI) 2009 will be held at the Andheri Sports Complex on Sunday. The event will be telecast live on Sony Entertainment Television at 8 pm.

For several weeks since the shortlist was announced, the candidates have been training to walk the ramp, learning to dress and groom themselves in keeping with international standards, and needless to say, closely monitoring their diet. Now that the litmus test is around the corner, excitement levels are building up to a frenzied climax.

This year, actors Malaika Arora Khan and R Madhavan will host the formal ceremony through to the final round while funnymen Karan Wahi and Swapnil Joshi will provide comic relief by chatting with the judges and members of the audience, particularly the anxious families who will each be praying for their girls to win.

The stakes seem higher especially because reigning Miss World runner-up, PFMI 2008 Parvathy Omanakuttan has carried forward the dream run of former winners like Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza. Actress Priyanka Chopra will revisit the moment of her success when she performs at the event on Sunday. Also taking the stage will be Fashion co-star Kangana Ranaut and Genelia D’souza, both choreographed by the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts.

The contestants will be dressed in dazzling creations by Rocky S, Pantaloons (designed by Rajesh and Anirban), Prasad Bidappa and Rajan for Arabella and Ritu Kumar. The ramp walk has been choreographed by Marc Robinson, who is contestant director and fashion director of PFMI 2009.

Australians beat England, but miss World Cup final

Sydney, Mar.19 (ANI): Australia shattered England’s unbeaten record, but still failed to make Sunday’s Women’s Cricket World Cup final.

The defending champion and host nation produced their best performance in six matches, after earlier losses to New Zealand and India proved fatal to their chances of winning a sixth title, reports The Australian.

Australia became the first team in the current tournament to bowl England out, dismissing them for 161 in the 50th over.

It was England’s first loss in 21 one-day internationals, but it was a hollow victory for Australia, who knocked off the modest target in 34.5 overs.

Australia’s only chance of making the final rested on Pakistan upsetting New Zealand, but the White Ferns effectively sealed their spot with an extraordinary batting performance.

New Zealand blasted 7-373, the highest score of the tournament with youngster Suzie Bates slamming 168 off 105 balls and featuring in a double century stand with captain Haidee Tiffen (100). (ANI)
