Grammy-nominated sitar artist debuts as Bollywood music director

Mumbai, June 11 (ANI): Grammy-nominated sitar artist Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan, who made his debut as music director with the Bollywood flick ”Mr Singh Mrs Mehta” launched the soundtrack of the film in Mumbai.

”Mr Singh and Mrs Mehta” also marks the directorial debut of Pravesh Bhardwaj.

Renowned director Sudhir Mishra and actor Prashant Narayanan were present at the music launch on Thursday.

Mishra lauded Khan for giving importance to lyrics.

“This is an amazing kind of music. It has its own place, its own charm. It gives importance to the words, it expresses the meaning and it is in another style,” said Mishra.

The sitarist, who mesmerised the audience with his compositions, said the film”s music was a throwback to yesteryears, with an emphasis on melody.

“The soul of ”Mr Singh and Mrs Mehta” lies in its music. It will take the audience back to the good old days of melodious music, which is ably backed by soulful lyrics,” said Khan.

”Mr Singh and Mrs Mehta” portrays complex shades of life, weaving a story of friendship, love and adultery.

The movie that is set for release on June 25 has been tagged by the director as one suited to mature and adult audiences. (ANI)

Indian-American on top

New York, June 5 — The American Heritage Medical Dictionary’s definition for it is: “An instrument for measuring the quantity of blood that flows per unit of time through a blood vessel.” That word is stromuhr. And having spelt that word, Anamika Veeramani, a 14-year-old Indian-American from North Royalton in the state of Ohio became the 10th Indian American to win the coveted Scripps National Spelling Bee. And her win makes it a hatrick for the community at the National Spelling Bee, with Indian Americans kids bagging the crown three years in a row. The 2009 competition was won by Kavya Shivashankar from Kansas, who was preceded by Sameer Mishra from Indiana in 2008. In winning the Bee, Veeramani, a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team, who wants to be a cardiovascular surgeon, gathered a bounty in prizes – a $ 30,000 cast prize from Scripps, as well as additional prizes from Merriam-Webster, Encyclopeadia Britannica, and the Sgima Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. Veeramani has trained in both Indian classical music and dance. She was placed fifth during the 2009 Spelling Bee.

The National Spelling Bee is an iconic American competition, that started in 1925 and is widely followed especially since it is nationally televised in the United States.

Bengal Govt points finger at Maoist activists

Kharagpur, May 29 — The West Bengal government is saying Friday’s train tragedy in Jhargram was the handiwork of the Maoists. Chances are the government is right.

The spot, the surroundings and the events leading to the mishap have evidence of Maoist involvement. The drill is familiar: remove fishplates and plant explosives beneath the tracks so that trains are blown up as soon as they reach the spot.

South Eastern Railway General Manager A.P. Mishra said: “Preliminary investigations are pointing to a blast. If it had been a problem with the clip (which fixes the tracks with the sleepers) or the fishplate, the engine would have derailed first after hitting it.

But it passed over the tracks safely.” HT’s scrutiny lent credence to Mishra’s statement.

HT has explored certain possibilities. First, it could have been a Maoist operation as part of its countrywide disruptive plans.

On many occasions, Maoists had blown up tracks and caused derailment. Second, it was the job of local Maoist activists, People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army members, or People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) supporters, but their leadership were not in the know of what was coming.

Third, others did it on some local issue, knowing that they would not be blamed in any case because Maoists are the usual suspects

BSP defends Mayawati and dares opposition leaders to make their asset

Lucknow, May 28 — Facing flak from the opposition over Rs 88 crore asset of Chief Minister Mayawati the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Friday came in defence of the party chief and dared the leaders of the rival political parties to make their asset public. The national general secretary of BSP, Satish Chandra Mishra said Mayawati has made an honest declaration of her assets while filing the nomination papers for the Vidhan Parishad election on Wednesday.

Throwing a challenge to the rivals Mishra said now its turn of the chiefs of other political parties, the office bearers and senior leaders to make their asset public. Mishra further said after becoming chief minister Mayawati has not taken a single penny as gift from anyone.

The increase of Rs 36 crore in her asset declared in June 2007 was due to escalation in the price of the properties. The asset declared with the Vidhan Parishad nomination is the current value of the property.

“The Income Tax Department had done the scrutiny of CM asset and the sources of her income as she had been filing return each year. CBI had done the reassessment of her asset on the direction of the Supreme Court” Mishra said.

The leaders of the opposition political parties including SP, Congress and BJP have raised demand of CBI probe into the Chief Minister asset. Reacting to the opposition charge Mishra said its unfortunate that the leaders of the opposition who are owner of benami property worth crore are raising question over the Chief Minister asset.

Mishra said the leaders of the opposition should declare their asset before and after joining politics. Every one is aware of the fact that when SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav joined politics he was owner of few bigha lands and a bicycle.

“Today Yadav and his family members have acquired large asset and benami property. The disclosure of the Yadav’s property had been made in the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Vishwanath Chaturvedi in the Supreme Court.

The petition is still pending before the court and CBI probe should be ordered over Yadav’s asset”, he said. Continuing attack on the SP chief Mishra said to protect himself from CBI Yadav was making desperate attempt to join UPA government.

Its also true on the leaders of other political parties who had few properties to count when they joined politics today they are owner of big industries and benami property. Mayawati had also raised the issue of black money deposited in the foreign banks Mishra said and added during Lok Sabha election the leaders of the UPA as well as NDA had promised the people that black money would be brought back but post election this leaders are mum over the issue.

“Few days back the government of Germany had handed over a list of 50 people whose black money was deposited in German bank. The name of all the 50 people should be made public and their black money should be brought to India”, he said.

Orissa tribals lead a coerced life, as Maoists want them to join rebellion

Malkangiri (Orissa), May 8 (ANI): Residents of Malkangiri district of Orissa are leading a fearful life, as the Maoist are compelling these tribals to join them against the system.

The tribals say in the name of their development, the Maoist rebels have been attacking government policies as well as the government establishments, which is in turn affecting them.

They say that till a few years ago they used to live freely and communicate with each other without any barriers, but today they do not even venture out of their houses after dark.

Kemo, a local resident, stated that the rebels come to their village frequently and force their children to join their group.

“The Maoists come to our village and force us to give our children to them. How can we do this? Our area is deprived of government facilities; no doctors come here. We, the people, living in hilly areas are facing a lot of problems due to this. That is why the Maoists are active in this region. The police officials also don””t visit this area frequently, which proves helpful the Maoists,” said Kemo.

He said security forces’ presence can prevent such incidents of Maoists’ atrocities.

Locals say that by the time the Central government takes some action to curb the violence, the Maoists will destroy the whole area.

“People are scared as you see the Maoists are killing the contractors frequently in these areas. Recently, they killed a contractor in this area. They have also killed the government officials that include a Block Chairman, a village head, and a prominent Bharatiya Janata Party leader in this district,” said B Mishra, a local resident.

The Maoists have spread into rural pockets in 20 of India””s 28 states and their crusade has upset business prospects worth billions of dollars in mining and allied industries.

Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency, which began in the late 1960s, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has warned the rebels have managed to retain support among a cross-section of society, and remain the country””s biggest internal security threat. (ANI)

Women”s Reservation Bill: Parliament adjourned till noon

New Delhi, Mar 8 (ANI): Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till noon on Monday following an opposition uproar to the Women’s Reservation Bill tabled by Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily.

Representatives of the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Rashstriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) demanded reservation for Dalit, Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and the minority community in the Bill.

In the Rajya Sabha, the SP and the RJD disrupted Question Hour over the implementation of the Mr. Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission Report on Minority Welfare.

Soon after the Chairman of the Upper House, Mohammad Hamid Ansari read out a message on the International Women”s Day, SP and RJD members demanded a discussion on why the commission’s report recommending reservation to minorities, was not being implemented.

Ansari said they could raise the issue during Zero Hour and pleaded with them to allow Question Hour to proceed.

SP and RJD members, however, continued to shout slogans seeking implementation of the report. They then moved towards the Well of the House forcing Ansari to adjourn the house. (ANI)

Indians celebrate Holi in Trinidad and Tobago

PORT-OF-SPAIN: Indians in Trinidad and Tobago celebrated Holi, rejoicing the performance of a folk dance troupe from Mathura and splashing coloured powder on each other’s face.

From early morning, thousands of Hindus came out in their vehicles decorated with banners and flags to greet the community members on the occasion.

Performance by the artists of Charuka Dance Academy of Mathura, Uttar Prades, was one of the main attractions at the celebration hosted by Indian high commissioner Malay Mishra.

Scores of Indian expatriates working here attended the function which was organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation, Caroni.

Winston Dookeran, leader of the Congress of the People (COP), in a message, said that Holi, also known as “Phagwa”, has become a national festival as it provides “a sense of spiritual empowerment and social mobility”.

“Phagwa has a message of hope, truth, humility and a spirit of humanitarianism for all mankind,” Dookeran said.

Satnarayan Maharaj, secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha(SDMS), said that Holi plays a vital role in the propagation of Indian culture across the world.

Impoverished kids forced to work in Siliguri tea-estates

Siliguri, Mar. 5 (ANI): Poverty-stricken children, below the permissible employment age of 14, are being made to work in the tea gardens of Siliguri.

At present there are 300 tea plantations in the Terai Doars region of northern Bengal, and the people of the tribal community called Madeshis are employed as workers in these gardens.

Workers are paid just 60 rupees per day, which makes it difficult for them to support their families. Such a situation forces children to work in tea gardens as well.

“Our parents can”t teach us and send us to school because they are paid very less here, in the tea gardens. That is why they send us to work here,” said Preeti Oraon, a ten-year-old girl working in Sukna Tea Estate.

Employing child workers proves beneficial for the owners as they are made to work nearly as much as an adult, but for a much smaller wage.

“Small children have left their school and are now working here in the tea gardens. The manager of the estate is getting his work done by these kids because of which they will never be able to study. The child labourers work at daily wages of 28 rupees and the money tempts these children to continue working at the tea estate. We are protesting against this,” said Sambhu Toppo, leader of the Tea Gardens Trade Union in the region.

Toppo said that more than 100 to 150 underage children work with their parents in the Sukna Tea Estate alone. This trend is becoming quite visible in numerous tea estates of the region.

Sukna Tea Estate”s manager O P Mishra admitted employing child workers, but said that they were forced into labour by their parents.

“Workers in the tea estate are very poor. We stop the underage children from working here and only allow kids above the age of 14 to work, and that too sometimes. But these children do not listen to us. Their parents come and threaten us and forcibly make them work here. They say that unless the children also work they will not be able to survive and earn a decent living,” said Mishra.

Officially, India has 12.6 million child workers, the world”s highest number, but activists suggest the figure is at least five times more. (ANI)

I wouldn’t play cricket on this wicket: Dhoni

Had India not lost four wickets in the opening hour on the first day here in Ahmedabad, chances are this Test match would have fallen asleep long before lunch on the fifth day, and both captains admitted that there was little they could have done to get a result on the surface.

“I wouldn’t play any cricket on this wicket,” Mahendra Singh Dhoni said with a smile, when asked if such pitches provided good advertisement for Test cricket.

Kumar Sangakkara, meanwhile, had started laughing even before the question was put to him. “Well, if you’re a batsman, you’ll probably love it,” he said at the post-match press conference. “I don’t think anyone expected this wicket to be this flat.”

Sangakkara added that his team’s best chance of getting their first win in India was on the first morning, not when they declared with India 334 behind with one-and-a-half days’ play left. “We had our best chance on the first morning and we just let it go with the line and length we bowled after lunch and tea. There was nothing there in the last two days.”

Dhoni said that even though the team had lost four big wickets early, he knew they weren’t out of the match. “Even at that time, we knew that whichever batsman got in and settled down would go on to score a hundred. We expected the pitch to have a little more bounce for the spinners but there was no help for anyone, either the fast bowlers or the spinners.”

Neither captain was too critical of his spinners, who were touted to have a big say in the series but bowled the most thankless of spells on this track. The four top spinners in this game — Harbhajan Singh, Muttiah Muralitharan, Amit Mishra and Rangana Herath — went for a total of 789 runs and picked up only nine wickets between them.

“Our spinners are still finding their way bowling in Tests in India,” Sangakkara said. “This is a good experience for them, bowling lengthy spells. Spinners were not the most effective on the track.”

“It was on the slower side but there was no help for the spinners,” Dhoni said. “Even if there was a bit of turn there was no real pace and bounce from the rough for them. Even Muttiah Muralitharan didn’t get the turn and wickets. Overall I’m happy, but we could have bowled much tighter.”

‘Sachin’s decision to play on’

The two sides agreed to call off the match once Sachin Tendulkar reached his 43rd century, well into the mandatory overs. “We were fine with going off before that, but Sachin wanted to continue and get his century. It was his decision to play on,” Sangakkara said.

Asked if he felt he had delayed the declaration on the fourth day — about 45 minutes into the second session — Sangakkara said, “On this pitch, I don’t think it would’ve mattered.”

Abandoned by children, inmates of an old-age perform ‘Shraadh’ in Bhopal

Bhopal, Sep.10 (ANI): Abandoned by their own children, many elderly people at an old-age home in Bhopal, performed ‘Shraadh’ for themselves during the ongoing ‘Pitrapaksha’.

As per Hindu tradition, one’s children or family members perform the Shraadh, the ritual of remembering the deceased.

These elderly inmates took the unusual step, as they realised there was no one in their families to perform this ritual.

“They (children) will not do the salvation ritual for us after our death. We are doing it for ourselves. If today they are treating us in this manner, we don’t know what they will do after our death. What can we say?… There is no one to see us. There is no one to listen to our plight… We will die like this here one day,” said Murari Lal Saxena, inmate of Anand Dham old-age-home.

By performing their own ‘shraadh’ rituals, the elderly said they were preparing for their next life.

Parmanad Agrawal, whose family members have died, said in this age and time he couldn’t trust his relatives to do ‘Shraadh’ for him.

“I’m doing my own salvation ritual. So that I don’t suffer in my next life,” said Parmanad Agrawal, an inmate of Anand Dham, the old age home.

Meanwhile, the in-charge of the old-age home Madhuri Mishra said that the inmates did the rituals out of a sense of compulsion.

“All elderly members were worried and in a sad mood. They said since their children have left them in an old age home then why not do their own post-death ritual even if they were still alive. This will leave no burden on their sons after their death. The elderly performed the rituals in the early morning,” said Madhuri Mishra, In-charge, Anand Dham Old-Age-Home.

Hindus believe in reincarnation, or in the cycle of birth. They believe that the body changes with every birth but the soul remains the same.

According to the Hindu philosophy, this birth and death cycle can be broken and the soul can be liberated by performing “Pind Daan” (rituals for dead).

During ‘Pitrapaksha’, children perform the ceremony and pray that the souls of their ancestors should rest in peace. By Ram Chand Sahu(ANI)

Strengthen Joint Anti Terrorism mechanism, revitalize back-channel diplomacy, says former Pakistan NSA

New Delhi, Sep 5 (ANI): Former Pakistan National Security Advisor Mehmud Ali Durrani on Saturday suggested that India and Pakistan should give more teeth to the Joint Anti-Terror mechanism and use services of persons of intelligence agencies of both sides.

Delivering a lecture at the first R K Mishra Memorial Lecture on the occasion of 20th Foundation Day of Observer Research Foundation (ORF) here,Durrani said that there is an urgent need to expand the Joint Anti-Terrorism mechanism to include senior representatives of security and intelligence agencies rather than leaving it to the ‘bright boys of the foreign office”.

The UPA government has time and again drawn ire for setting up the mechanism, which was established in 2006 in Havana, in which both countries are expected to share information about terrorism related incidents.

Durrani criticized the security establishment and intelligence agencies for stalling the forward movement in the dialogue process established between the two countries.

The present mechanism, he said, was working but it took one step forward and two steps backward.

Durrani suggested that the intelligence and security establishment of India and Pakistan should interact more frequently.

“I personally know the intelligence and ISI chiefs of Pakistan. I also came to know at least two RAW and IB chiefs. I found the Indian spy masters professional and decent human beings. Therefore, I feel confident that after couple of meetings, the spy masters would learn to work together,” said Durrani.

Durrani felt that a joint probe of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks would produce better results. However, he told reporters that according to his knowledge, there is zero evidence against Hafiz Saeed.

Referring to the blame game vis-a-vis allegations of India’s involvement in Balochistan , the former National Security Adviser of Pakistan said: “We need to move beyond these state of affairs. This can only be done through a frank and candid dialogue between our security and intelligence services.”

Recalling that back-channel worked effectively during the time of NDA Government in India and Nawaz Sharif and Parvez Musharraf Governments in Pakistan, Durrani expressed dismay over the diminishing back-channel-diplomacy under the present governments in New Delhi and Islamabad.

Durrani said: that back channel diplomacy had the advantage of deniability and [it] was” able to develop innovative solution away from the glare of publicity and public debate.”

Durrani added, however, that back-channel diplomacy cannot replace the formal dialogue etween the two countries. But its s usefulness is undeniable.

He emphasised the role of the media in improving the relations between India and Pakistan. But he also pointed out that sometimes the media dramatised the events and added fuel to the fire in the already fragile relations between the two countries.

Durrani was sacked earlier this year for allegedly stating that Ajmal Aaamir Kasab was a Pakistani citizen. By Naveen Kapoor(ANI)

Himachal HC judges to make public their assets

Shimla, Aug 30 (ANI): The judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court also decided to make their property public, on the lines of Supreme court justices.

Earlier, the judges of Kerala and Delhi high court had announced their decision to make their assets public.

“A decision to declare assets has been taken unanimously by all the nine judges, including acting Chief Justice R.B.Mishra, after the apex court judges’ resolve to make public their assets,” V.K. Sharma, Registrar General of the High Court, said.

Sharma informed that the details of the assets of the judges would be put up on the high court’s website at the earliest.

He added, “We are awaiting the guidelines that have been finalised by the apex court in this regard. As soon as we get these, the list of assets of the judges would be put on the High Court website.”

The Himachal Pradesh High Court had adopted a resolution in 2008 that all judges should declare assets and investments in their name or in the name of their spouse.

Earlier on Wednesday, a meeting of the Justices of the Supreme Court chaired by Chief Justice K.G.Balakrishnan decided to make public the details of their assets.

The issue of disclosing of assets by judges caused a major debate after an article written by Justice Shylendra Kumar of the Karnataka High Court. (ANI)

‘It is for BJP to decide on leadership age issue,’ Kandahar: Bhagwat

New Delhi, Aug.28 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that the age group of 55 to 60 is the ideal for leaders of the Sangh Parivar, and added that it was for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to decide at what age its leaders will quit office and retire.

While stating that the RSS preferred not to interfere in the internal matters of the BJP or other affiliates, Bhagwat said: “It is for the party to decide on the leadership issue. Opinions given by me to party leaders are not official. The RSS does not advise BJP in matters of governance.”

His comments were with reference to the criticisms launched against senior BJP leader L.K. Advani by some of his former and current colleagues, including Arun Shourie, Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh, besides former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.

On the 1999 Kandahar hijack episode, he said the RSS had no role to play. When asked for his reaction to the criticism being leveled against Advani by his colleagues for not accepting that he was present when all key decisions relating to that incident were taken, he said that he had no comment to make, and added that it was for the BJP to say anything on the matter.

“We advise and support the BJP, but decisions in internal matters is theirs. We are never worried, we will tide over the crisis.

He repeatedly refused to comment on the BJP crisis, and as far as Shourie’s comments were concerned, he said: “Don’t want to comment on what Shourie said about others.”

Bhagwat’s comments came after his meetings on Thursday with BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior leader Murli Manhar Joshi. The discussion with Singh lasted for one-and-a-half hours.

BJP leader Varun Gandhi also met him on Friday morning for about 45 minutes.

Bhagwat had on August 18 called for an end to factionalism in the BJP, the political wing of the Sangh Parivar, and said the party leadership should make way for younger leaders.

The expulsion of Jaswant Singh, two days after the launch of his latest book-Jinnah: India -Partition – Independence, has been criticised by senior leaders Arun Shourie and Yashwant Sinha. Shourie has called on the RSS to take over the leadership of the BJP. (ANI)

Scientific community wanted more tests, says Santhanam

New Delhi, Aug 27 (ANI): Top defence scientist Dr.K. Santhanam said on Thursday that the scientific community in India had felt after the May 1998 nuclear tests that there should be another test to complete the research.

Speaking to ANI after controversially revealing that Pokhran II tests were not entirely successful Santhanam said: “The Science and Technology Community as a whole wanted to have some more tests.”

“…but conducting a nuclear test is a highly political decision, and no matter the wish of scientific community may be, the political leadership of the country will have its say,” he added.

Santhanam also clarified that he had at no stage said the tests were a complete failure.

“I didn’t say it was a failure but partially successful,” Santhanam added.

He also said that in the reports given to the government, the scientists had mentioned the outcome of their experiments.

“The scientific community placed its reports about the out come of the tests. They are highly classified and the political leadership of the country is aware about that,” he said.

Maintaining his stand to go for more tests before signing CTBT or NPT Santhanam said, “Many people in the administration knew that India is in need of another test.”

“The energy released after the blast were measured and the energy release was much lower than what was expected by the designers. It was not a surprise to me,” Santhanam recalled.

India tested five nuclear devices including two-sub kilo category of thermo nuclear devices code named “Operation Shakti,” on May 11 and 13, 1998 at Pokhran in Rajasthan.

Countering Santhanam’s views, former National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra said: “When they (scientists) said about the success of the tests in 1998, May 11 and 13, we asked whether they want to go for another test, but they (scientists) said No, and were satisfied by the tests.”

“It was very clear that based on their report only, we have announced it to the world. We have not lied to any one,” Mishra said adding it was only then that plans developed to discuss civil nuclear co-operation with the United States.

” In the entire scientific history, no country has gained 100 percent success in its first test of thermo nuclear device…if we get a chance, India should go for another test, especially of a thermonuclear device.” Santhanam said.

He, however, cautioned the country’s political leadership against signing either Comprehensive test ban treaty (CTBT) or Non – proliferation treaty (NPT).

The NPT is a highly discriminative treaty and divides the whole world into a nuclear haves and have nots, “Santhanam claimed.

Santhanam said the new Indo- US nuclear deal does not come in the way of going for more tests.

“There is one clause in the Indo- US nuclear deal that if the security scenario around the country changes, then we can go for a test, and the country’s leadership should take a decision to go for a test taking confidence of all the factors involved,” Santhanam said. By Shreeraj Gudi(ANI)

Kalam rejects Santhanam’s Pokhran II failure claims, my stand reaffirmed says Jaswant

New Delhi, Aug.27 (ANI): Former President Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam on Thursday rejected senior DRDO scientist Dr. K. Santhanam’s claims that the Pokhran II nuclear tests held in the month of May 1998 were partially successful.

Dr. Kalam told a private television channel that the tests were successful and that a thorough review of these tests had been taken with Dr. K.Santhanam present.

Expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh said that he completely agreed with the statements issued by former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on L.Advani being in the know of all developments and key decisions related to the Kandahar hijack.

” This is a reaffirmation of what I have been saying. I found Advani’s comments on Kandahar strange. I don’t know if someone had a lapse in memory. Terrorists could not have been released without Advani knowing. Grateful to Yashwant and Brajesh for standing by facts,” said Jaswant Singh.

Singh’s comment to a television channel came as Sinha said that he completely backed Mishra statement that Advani was aware of all key decisions related to the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane IC-814 to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Confirming that Advani was present at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on December 31, 1999, Sinha said: “The truth should be spoken. Advani must come out and clarify events. The CCS minutes of that day need to be examined for clarification. I completely back Brajesh Mishra on L.K. Advani. IC-814 is a matter of recent history, not a party matter.”

Mishra rebutted Advani’s contention that he was unaware about IC-814 being taken from Amritsar to Kandahar by terrorists. He also rejected the view that Advani did not know that a Cabinet Minister would be flying to Kandahar to secure the release of the hostages in exchange for the three most wanted terrorists.

“L.K. Advani knew all about the IC-814 hijacking. Advani agreed to send the plane to Kandahar to free the hostages. The terrorists had threatened to kill all the 160 passengers onboard. Advani knew that Jaswant (Singh) was on the plane with the terrorists. It was one of the most difficult decisions we took,” said Mishra.

Mishra’s views on the Kandahar hijacking comes days after Jaswant Singh embarrassed Advani by saying that he (Jaswant Singh) “covered” up for him (Advani) when he said that the former Home Minister was not aware that he was going to Kandahar with three terrorists in 1999.

He also said Advani was aware of the decision to release of the terrorists in exchange for freedom of over 160 hostages kept in the Indian Airlines plane that was hijacked.

“Yes, he did,” Singh told the NDTV news channel last Friday when asked whether Advani knew that Singh was going to Kandahar with three terrorists.

It maybe recalled that Advani had claimed a few years ago that he did not know that Jaswant Singh was on the plane with the three dreaded terrorists to Kandahar.

Singh was asked why he said during the election campaign that Advani did not know that he was going to Kandahar with the terrorists and whether he covered up for Advani.

“I”m sorry I did. I tried to cover it. I treated it as part of my continuing sense of commitment and loyalty,” he said.

Asked whether he regretted covering up for Advani, Singh told NDTV: “I don”t regret because that is the step I had taken. But it was part of an election campaign. How should I put it? I was being very conservative with truth.”

He said Advani could not have not known about the decision to fly to Kandahar.

“I announced it in the Cabinet. Yes, Advani was there, how can they (terrorists) be released from prison without the Home Minister consenting and signing pieces of paper? he asked.

Singh said he felt very hurt when Advani said what he did and he went.

“I went and told him. I was really hurt. Look I have travelled this route to Pakistan in every possible fashion, the Lahore bus, to Kandahar, to Agra, Chhatisinghpura, Parliament attack. But I have never tried to transfer responsibility. I have never spoken, it was very hurtful,” he said.

Singh also made a veiled criticism of Advani when he asked why the aircraft was allowed to leave Amritsar because once it left the “game was lost”.

“Who would be responsible for the aircraft leaving Amritsar. For 45 minutes the aircraft was on ground at Amritsar. All of you are fixated on Kandahar. I didn”t go to Kandahar because there was a good night club there. I went there because 166 lives were involved and the officers there asked me to consult if a decision was to be made,” he said.

He even asked Advani what the latter wanted him to say.

“He said you say whatever you want to,” Singh said.

Asked whether he would have expected Advani to stand up for him, Singh said “He (Advani) was not required to cover any misdeed. My going to Kandahar was not a misdeed. And I was not going on a holiday jaunt. 166 lives were involved.”

He said it was a sense of commitment to India that required to save whatever another colleague has done.

“You know what the comment means. I didn”t know. It”s a comment not on Jaswant Singh. It”s a comment on Atalji because there is a sense of collective responsibility of the Cabinet. We forgot essentials.” (ANI)

Congress announces list of candidates for Bihar Assembly by-elections

New Delhi, Aug.23 (ANI): Congress party on Sunday announced the list of seven candidates for the upcoming State Assembly by-elections in Bihar.

The party has decided not to get into any alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) during the by-elections and decided to go it alone.

According to an official release issued by the Central Election Committee in-charge Oscar Fernandes on Sunday, Pheku Ram will contest from Bochaha assembly segment in Muzaffarpur and Noor Alam from Aurai seat in the same district.

The other candidates are Mukund Kumar from Kalyanpur, Anita Ram from Warisnagar, Parshuram Tiwari from Ramgarh in Kaimur, Shah Nawaj Khan from Chainpur (Kaimur) and Murari Prasad Gautam from Chenari in Rohtas.

During last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party contested the polls alone and won two of the 40 seats in the state.

Over a dozen assembly seats in Bihar fell vacant following the election of sitting MLAs as MPs in the last Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress Party, meanwhile, has also announced name of Tilottama Sharma as its candidate from the Dwarka assembly seat in Delhi.

The seat fell vacant as the sitting MLA Mahabal Mishra was elected to the Lok Sabha from Delhi West parliamentary constituency. (ANI)

Rahul Dravid | Rahul Dravid ODI Comeback | Rahul Dravid all set for ODI comeback |  Dravid in Line for Tri Series in Sri Lanka

The Indian selectors are looking to pick a common 15-member squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy, when they meet to pick the side on Sunday.

Rahul Dravid is all set to make a comeback to the ODI team after a gap of nearly two years. He is likely to replace struggling Rohit Sharma in the middle-order, which has been India’s major cause of concern in recent times.

Dravid has not played an ODI for India since October 2007 but rather than any particular brilliance on the part of a man who has already amassed over 10,000 runs, necessity will perhaps dictate this decision.

Another boost will the presence of Sachin Tendulkar.

Virender Sehwag will still require a long recovery process which not only means that he is ruled out for the tri series but also, has cast a shadow of doubt on his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Suresh Raina will come back from injury and Rohit Sharma has suffered a serious slump for team India which means that India will be low on experience. Zaheer Khan’s injury will also weaken the bowling attack and will require Ishant Sharma to pick his game after the lacklustre performance in England as well as in the ODI series in the West Indies.

Ashish Nehra is likely to be a part of a squad as also, R.P. Singh.

UP pacer Sudeep Tyagi may be the dark horse after his superb performance in IPL-II and recently concluded Emerging Players’ tournament Down Under.

In the spin department Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha are the likely choice. However, leg-spinner Amit Mishra may get a look-in in place of Pragyan Ojha.

Major fire at a cotton godown in Jabalpur city

Jabalpur, Aug.8 (ANI): A major fire at a cotton godown on Saturday evening gutted property worth millions of rupees in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur city. No casualty was reported in the incident.

The incident occurred at about 5.00 p.m in Basti Hanumatal, a crowded residential colony here.

Ten fire tenders were pressed into service to curb the fire. But the fire fighters had a hard time managing through narrow lanes to reach the cotton godown due to it being in a crowded place.

“After battling for almost two hours, we were able to control the fire and will be able to completely douse it in another half-an-hour,” Usman Khan, a fire official said.

Officials said the losses could run into millions of rupees.

“Losses can be estimated of around five million rupees…the accident took place in a residential area and moreover there were not enough equipment to douse the fire, and that was why the fire was raging. The fire had largely spread when the fire brigade reached,” added Khan.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. By Rakesh Mishra (ANI)
