Monitor Your Inner Health, From Naptime Brain Waves to Metabolic Age

Manufacturer: Roundup:
Wired Rating: 0

A mirror will tell you how you look, but it won’t tell you what’s going on under your skin. These gadgets will help you monitor your inner health, so the contents match the wrapper.

1. Garmin Forerunner 110

The newest Forerunner is small enough to fit under the cuff of a dress shirt and yet it still talks to satellites. It’s also a great example of a company listening to its customers: Garmin users have been clamoring for a less expensive watch that records where they go and how fast they get there. The 110 does just that.

WIRED Small, affordable, accurate. Lets you use Garmin’s Connect Web site, where you can save and track all your workouts.

TIRED Clip-on USB adapter can be flaky. Getting a lock on the satellites can take a minute or two, so leave time to do some quality stretching before you take off.

2. Zeo Personal Sleep Coach

Strap on the headband before you nod off and in the morning you’ll have a quantified picture of your night’s sleep. Zeo takes an EEG of your nappytime brain waves, so it knows how you doze. And it goes deeper too: By identifying “sleep stealers,” the device helps you find out how, for example, the light from your TV increases the time it takes to fall asleep.

WIRED Opt for detailed information or a single number—your “ZQ”—that measures quality of slumber. Can use your brain signals to determine the best time to wake you up.

TIRED You might sleep better without a transmitter strapped to your head. No wireless uploading.

3. Tanita BC-350

Your scale only measures your weight? Please. The BC-350 not only tracks your pounds but measures body fat, bone mass, metabolic age, and hydration level. Using a mild electric current (too small to feel), the scale measures the impedance of your body to analyze the nitty-gritty details.

WIRED If you can read standing up, you can use this thing. Allows multiple profiles, so you can see how you stack up against friends and family (eek).

TIRED No way to store data, so get comfy with Excel if you want to track your stats. Don’t expect any advice, either: Though it serves up lots of info, the scale offers no action plan or system for setting goals.

4. GoWear Fit

Who knew so many sensors could fit into a single armband? The GoWearFit packs an accelerometer, a temperature monitor, and a galvanic skin detector. These three electronic superheroes join forces to provide an insanely accurate accounting of how many calories you burn in a given day.

WIRED Fits unobtrusively under clothes. Data uploads to an easy-to-navigate Web site.

TIRED Not waterproof, so it can’t crunch how many calories you burn in the pool (or the shower). Elastic armband gets a little ripe, snuggled up next to your armpit and all. Ugly display sold separately. The Web site has only basic goal setting, like “I want to get more active.”

$190, bodymedia.com

5. Philips DirectLife

Toss the DirectLife in your pocket or dangle it around your neck and its accelerometers keep tabs on how much you move. USB-sync it with a Web site account to track activity levels, identify trends, and set fitness goals. Wow, that was easy.

WIRED Online training coaches are just an email away; their periodic friendly reminders help you stay focused.

TIRED Do you really burn the same number of calories lifting weights as you do sitting on the sofa? (No.) There’s no display except some LED dots that show how much of your daily goal you’ve accomplished. No wireless data transfer. $12.50 monthly fee. Boo.

Brad Pitt to compete with Beckham for World Cup bid

London, June 4 (ANI): Actor Brad Pitt will compete with ace footballer David Beckham after the Hollywood superstar joined the committee trying to bring the 2018 World Cup to the United States.

Last month, Beckham officially presented England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and now Pitt has joined the USA Bid Committee.

“Soccer is a truly global sport and the opportunity to join the effort to have the US host the world’s greatest sporting event again is a great honour,” The Mirror quoted Pitt, as saying.

Comedian Drew Carey and actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger are also on the US committee.

Both countries are also bidding for the 2022 World Cup, as are Australia, Russia, Spain-Portugal and the Netherlands-Belgium.

Japan, South Korea and Qatar are also bidding for the 2022 tournament.

The US staged the tournament in 1994, while England hosted the European Championships in 1996.

FIFA’s executive committee will select the 2018 and 2022 hosts in a vote on December 2. (ANI)

Three Men And A Baby 3rd instalment in the pipeline

London, June 4 (ANI): Tom Selleck has admitted that there is a sequel in the offing for the movie ‘Three Men and a Baby’.

The 65-year-old actor starred in the 1987 film along with Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg and followed it up with ‘Three Men And A Little Lady’ in 1990.

The third part, evidently, is titled ‘Three Men And A Bride’.

“It is true that Disney checked my availability, and I know they checked Ted”s and Steve”s, and then had a script written, I think tentatively called Three Men And A Bride, which kind of says it all,” The Mirror quoted him as telling MTV.

Steve had revealed last year that another movie might be in the works.

Tom added, “I hope it”s a good script, and if it is a good script I hope they do it, because it would be really fun to get back with Ted and Steve. The strongest of the two movies I think is the first one. It had more heart, and that”s what I hope this third one would have if we do it.” (ANI)

Montgomerie fighting to save marriage after cheating wife

London, Jun 4 (ANI): Ryder Cup captain and golf superstar Colin Montgomerie is fighting to save his marriage after confessing that he had been having a secret affair with his ex-lover Joanne Baldwin.

Montgomerie’s two-year marriage is in trouble though he has ended his affair so that his wife Gaynor stays with him, The Mirror reports.

“I have put my marriage under considerable strain, but we are working through these problems. I am very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much.

“I would ask that my family and I are given the space and privacy to continue trying to resolve the issues. I will be making no further comment,” Montgomerie said in a statement.

The golf superstar first fell for former neighbour Joanne, 50, after his marriage to Eimear Wilson broke down in 2004, The Mirror reports.

The romance with Joanne finally collapsed in April 2006 after the golfer was spotted sharing romantic dinner dates with Scottish TV presenter Alison Walker.

Soon afterwards Montgomerie met Gaynor, who inherited 20 million pounds in 2003 when her first husband, furniture tycoon George Knowles, died while on holiday in Mallorca.

They wed in April 2008. The couple has seven children between them and lives in a nine-bed Perthshire mansion.

A source close to Joanne said: “She kept in touch after they split up and made it clear she would always be there for Colin.”

Joanne told The Mirror: “I’m very sorry if his marriage is in trouble, but it’s nothing to do with me.” (ANI)

Cricket umpire ‘headbutts’ player in England over ‘disputed’ decision!

London, May 26(ANI): A cricket match between Oswestry CC and Whitchurch CC in England descended into chaos when an umpire allegedly headbutted a player during an argument.

According to reports, the umpire gave a batsman “not out” and had a heated row with a fielder, who was convinced that the official had made a mistake.

Later, things turned ugly as players from both the sides piled into each other.

“I couldn’t believe what was going on. I have never seen anything like that on a cricket pitch in my life,” The Mirror quoted one of the players, as saying.

The club game reportedly had no neutral umpires so was being officiated by players from the batting side.

The situation only got under control only when local police intervened to part the warring teams.

The game was abandoned. (ANI)

Prince Andrew forgives Fergie over ”cash for access” scam

London, May 26 (ANI): Prince Andrew has forgiven ex-wife Sarah Ferguson for her “cash for access” scam, it has emerged.

A sting operation by British tabloid the News of the World had recently caught the Duchess of York setting a price tag of 500,000 pounds on an introduction to Prince Andrew, promising to open the door to lucrative international deals for the ”client”.

But now Andrew has forgiven Fergie after she called him up and apologised.

She even offered to quit the room she has at his Windsor mansion.

But Andrew told her she could stay as long as wanted to.

“Andrew told her to calm down and get a grip. He is a very caring person, a loving father and he told Sarah not to be so silly,” the Mirror quoted a friend, as saying.

The insider went on: “He told her she had been set up and although she had clearly made a massive mistake, he wasn”t going to kick her out on to the streets. He knows she can”t afford anywhere – that”s why he let her stay at Royal Lodge in the first place.

“The other major reason was because Bea and Eugenie like being close to their mum. Whatever else she is, Sarah has always been an excellent parent and Andrew admires her for that. His attitude is that he isn”t going to tear his family apart because of one week”s bad headlines.”

The source added: “The fact is that when say they are the world”s happiest divorced couple, they really mean it. Sometimes you cannot understand why they split up in the first place. They will always be best friends and although the set-up seems weird to many people, it works for them.” (ANI)

England players not comfortable with World Cup ball: Capello

London, May 24 (ANI): Coach Fabio Capello has said that the England team is experiencing difficulty in dealing with the World Cup ball.

Capello confirmed that the Adidas “Jalabani” ball is behaving oddly even in the relatively low heights of the squad”s Austrian base-camp.

Capello expects the ball to be even harder to control in the High Veldt, where England kick off their campaign against the USA in Rustenburg, 1200 metres above sea level, on June 12.

“We selected Austria so that the players would understand more the way the ball behaves. It”s completely different. Irdning is not as high as Johannesburg or Rustenburg but still the ball movement is completely new. That is why the players have to use the ball every day in training. That will be really important,” the Mirror quoted Capello, as saying.

“I”ve seen that the ball arrives really fast and the players are having problems controlling it. For the goalkeepers it is terrible because it is always moving. For this reason every training session ends with shooting practice at the keepers, to prepare the players for the movement of the ball,” he added. (ANI)

Cate Blanchett says Russell Crowe is ”not always easy”

London, May 21 (ANI): Cate Blanchett has revealed that working with Russell Crowe is ”not always easy”.

The Oscar winning actress plays Maid Marian alongside Russell in Ridley Scott”s epic blockbuster ‘Robin Hood’ and hinted at a sometimes tense atmosphere on set.

“Russell is not always easy – his reputation both as an actor and as an intimidating presence precedes him, but he”s always after making the best possible film,” the Mirror quoted her as telling Parade.com.

“I”m not backward in coming forward, so we had some, shall I say, ”robust” conversations. When I”m working, I like to push it right to the edge. I believe if you”re going to do something, you should do it all the way,” she added.

The ‘Elizabeth’ star also said that she tried to hold her own with the guys.

“The biggest challenge was they expected me to look more gorgeous than my male co-stars, which isn”t easy when you”re doing action stuff,” she revealed.

“I loved the horse riding, and the moment where Marian gets all chainmailed up and rides off into battle. We had to ride these wild, wild ponies; some of them were really difficult to get on and none of them had saddles. We all galloped off and it was thrilling,” she added. (ANI)

Freak training ground mishap is Capello’s biggest World Cup fear

London, May 21 (ANI): England boss Fabio Capello has admitted that his biggest fear over the next two weeks is a freak training ground accident claiming a victim of one of his key players.

According to The Mirror, the Italian coach had a scare last week when John Terry initially feared he had broken his right foot preparing for the FA Cup final, while Matthew Upson sustained a nasty-looking gash above his eye in a collision with Jermain Defoe on Wednesday.

Fortunately, neither injury was serious, but Capello is aware he is a hostage to fortune between now and the end of the tournament.

“For me, the World Cup is a really big challenge. I think England are one of the best teams in the world and we can win against anyone. My approach to the World Cup is relaxed now. I have to study the other countries we will be playing against and hope that everything we are preparing will be ready for the tournament,” Capello was quoted, as saying.

He added: “As England manager, I can do a lot of in-depth preparation. But then, we could get an injury to an important player, and everything I have prepared is for nothing! (ANI)

World Cup bosses seek Interpol”s help to probe bid corruption claims

London, May 21 (ANI): World Cup bosses have sought the help of Interpol to investigate Lord Triesman”s allegations of corruption.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke revealed football”s governing body is working with the international police agency to see if there is any substance to the claims.

The allegations cost Lord Triesman his role as head of England”s 2018 bid and new chairman Geoff Thompson will today meet FIFA President Sepp Blatter for the first time since the scandal broke, The Mirror reports.

Thompson, the former FA chairman who is a FIFA vice-chairman and also a senior member of the UEFA High Command, plans to meet the other European members of the world body”s ruling executive committee over the next 48 hours.

His meeting with FIFA president Sepp Blatter, however, will be crucial in helping bid chief executive Andy Anson and the rest of his team get to grips with the challenge they face in persuading a majority of the 24 ex-co members to vote for England in Zurich on December 2.

The bid team believe Thompson”s status within the FIFA family will help soothe the anger felt by Triesman”s comments, dismissed as lacking credibility by FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke. (ANI)

Berbatov is going nowhere: Fergie

London, May 21 (ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished claims he was set to cut his losses by selling 30.5 million flop Dimitar Berbatov this summer.

Asked if Berbatov would be sold, The Mirror quoted Fergie, as saying: “No, he will not – definitely not. There”s a problem with Manchester United in terms of expectation and media attention.

“There”s speculation every year and we”ve got to live with that hype. We know Dimitar is a good player and he will be with us next year. We don”t have a great deal to improve on. The one area of concern last season was that we had 16 players missing through injury,” he added.

“That impacts on the stability of the team as the season develops. But we always felt that when our back four was in place there was a sense of purpose and strength,” Fergie said. (ANI)

Red Bull win in Turkey can ruin F1 championship title bid: Button

London, May 21(ANI): Reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button believes that his race for the championship title could be over in Turkey, if the Red Bull team romp away with the silverware yet again.

Button is currently fourth in the championship standings behind Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, and Ferarri”s Fernando Alonso.

The circuit in Istanbul should suit McLaren’s aero strengths, but if Red Bull dominates again after their 1-2 at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, it could spell disaster for the reigning champion, The Mirror reports.

Button trails Webber by eight points, but said: “This team have the resources, the manpower and the passion to succeed and to chase, and this is what they will do.”

“We’ve had a couple of issues in the last two races with reliability and mistakes, but we have to put those behind us now and focus on the next race in Turkey. We’ve got to come with a stronger car, and we can”t make any mistakes,” he added.

The Red Bull drivers are favourites to win the title this year, with the team already leading the constructors’ championship, 20 points ahead of Ferrari.

They have consistently out-paced others till now in the season, claiming pole position for all six races. (ANI)

London, May 19 (ANI): Latino Singer Jennifer Lopez has agreed to sing at the World Music Awards but that has come with a huge price.

As part of her demand list, she has asked for a helicopter ‘on stand-by’.

She has also demanded a custom-fitted speedboat – complete with love seat, faux leather seats and a champagne fridge.

The 40-year-old has also asked for a pair of 3,000-pound-diamond-encrusted headphones to keep the noise of the boat”s motor.

“Jennifer was partying on board Sir Philip Green”s yacht in Cannes before being transferred by speed boat to Monaco for the WMA,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“Her people requested that she have an entire floor of the hotel to herself to ensure she wasn”t hassled. Privacy was a main concern so she had a piece of beach roped off, too.

“She spent the morning playing there with the kids. But she declined the offer of a butler, insisting she was happy to do things for herself,” the source added. (ANI)

London, May 19 (ANI): Sarah Jessica Parker has admitted that she never gets bored of her ‘Sex And The City’ character Carrie Bradshaw.

The 45-year-old, who started playing the role back in 1998, insists that she’s different from her glamorous alter-ego Bradshaw.

“I don”t feel like Carrie, my life is so different, my choices are different – which is probably why it works so well, because if she felt familiar to me, I would have bored of playing her a long time ago,” the Mirror quoted her as telling Heat mag.

“I love her, I love playing her and everything about her – the good, the flawed, the mistakes, the bad choices,” she added. (ANI)

England 2018 bid gets support from Platini and FIFA’s vice-president

London, May 19 (ANI): UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner have given a boost to England’s troubled 2018 World Cup bid.

FIFA’s ethics committee are investigating claims made by Lord Triesman that Spain would support Russia’s bid for the 2018 World Cup in return for help bribing referees in South Africa.

Triesman has resigned following publication of a recording of the comments, made secretly during a conversation with a friend, The Mirror reports.

Platini said the row may have damaged England’s bid, but insisted it can recover, and believes Triesman deserves support.

The UEFA president said: “I have a good friendship with Lord Triesman and I want to help him in his bad moment, for him as a person. I want to support my friend in this big problem. I think it is a bad thing that happened to him.”

Platini said the controversy could have harmed England’s bid but under Triesman’s successor Geoff Thompson, a UEFA and FIFA vice-president, the campaign could recover before the vote by FIFA’s executive committee is taken on December 2.

Asked if the bid had been damaged, Platini said: “Maybe yes, I think you need the people who vote on your side. But for the bid Geoff Thompson is a good guy, England is a great country and of course it can recover and survive this.”

Meanwhile, Warner said the FA’s swift action had limited any damage, The Mirror reports.

“It’s unfortunate but the English FA dealt with it appropriately and quickly and therefore I don’t believe there’ll be too much negative reaction from it,” Warner told Bloomberg. (ANI)

“The World Cup is a nice opportunity to show I can do the same things in the national team as for Barcelona,” Messi added. (ANI)
