Pak rights group demands legislation for Hindu marriage registration act

Islamabad, May 19 (ANI): Pakistan’s Scheduled Caste Rights Movement (SCRM) has demanded a legislation for registering Hindu marriages in the country, in the absence of which women of the minority community are deprived of their basic rights.

Speaking during a debate titled ‘Rights of the Scheduled-Caste Hindus’, several representatives of the community were of the view that Hindu women do not get their due share in the property of their husband or parents.

“They are also unable to get health services, cast a vote, obtain a passport, and buy or sell any property,” the orators opined.

Several human rights activists who participated in the debate, urged the law makers to hasten the progress of the Pakistani Hindu Marriages Registration Bill 2009, whose draft has already been submitted to the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Ministry of Human Rights for consideration, The Daily Times reports. Police turn blind eye to rampant kidnapping and rape of Hindu girls in Pak’s Sindh province

Karachi, Mar.26 (ANI): A 12-year-old Hindu girl, Nandini, is still missing as police officials have failed to recover her even after four months of her being allegedly picked up by an influential individual of the city.

Officials have no information regarding Nandini’s whereabouts, who was kidnapped in December last year, and the accused named Younis has not been arrested despite the fact that there is a first information report (FIR) registered against him.

It is not an isolated case where Hindu families have been left with little choice than to lament over their fate, with no help in sight from the authorities.

Several Hindu families, which are at the receiving end of the government’s apathy, are awaiting justice for years but there’s no one to listen to their plight.

According to Roshni Research and Development Welfare Organisation (RRDWO), a non-government organisation (NGO), a research has shown in majority of cases involving the minority community, police only provide lip service and do not seriously hunt down the criminals.

The NGO’s President, Muhammad Ali, cited another case of a 17-year-old Hindu girl, who was kidnapped and raped by four men, in January this year. All the four accused were granted pre-arrest bail by a session court.

“Rape is a non-bail able offence in Pakistan and this is against criminal procedure and the law,” The Daily Times quoted Ali, as saying.

Ali said the Asian Human Rights Commission has also expressed its serious concern over the case.

“Instead of giving justice to the victim’s family, the police later arrested the victim’s father on a false offence, and have obstructed attempts by the family to file an FIR and obtain a medical report,” he added.

Ali also disclosed that an ‘illegal’ tribal court had asked the victim girl to marry her rapist and convert to Islam following which the girl had threatened public self-immolation.

“Not arresting the rapists and rather forcing a Hindu girl, who is a rape victim, to convert to Islam and be the wife of the culprit could be double trauma for the victim. It is another form of further victimising a woman,” he said.

Ali also appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of the gross human rights violations of the poor and the marginalized minorities in the Sindh province at the hands of police and lower judiciary, who are influenced by the feudal and local elite. Women”s Reservation Bill: Parliament adjourned till noon

New Delhi, Mar 8 (ANI): Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till noon on Monday following an opposition uproar to the Women’s Reservation Bill tabled by Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily.

Ansari said they could raise the issue during Zero Hour and pleaded with them to allow Question Hour to proceed.

SP and RJD members, however, continued to shout slogans seeking implementation of the report. They then moved towards the Well of the House forcing Ansari to adjourn the house. (ANI)

Gay community stages rally in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, June 28 (ANI): People belonging to sexual minorities staged a rally in Bhubaneswar demanding their rights.

Gays, lesbians, transgender and bisexuals put up plays and also took to streets to participate in the ‘Rainbow Pride Walk’ to make people aware about their plight.

“The reason for organising this rally is that people look down upon us in the society. There is a stigma attached to sexual minorities in our society. We want to live with respect,” said Tulu.

Members of the sexual minority community said they wanted the society to treat them with respect and wanted equal rights like any other citizen.

“The purpose is to make people aware that the society in India, in Orissa, in Bhubaneswar, – wherever lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender are, – every where, they have equal rights like any other citizen of this country. India is a democratic country. We have the right to express our problems, our concerns to larger society and we expect the civil society, the private sector and even the NGO sector to understand our problems better,” said Pawan Dhall, organiser of the march.

The ‘Rainbow Pride Walk’ held annually aims to draw sexual orientation, gender identity and associated sexual health issues into the larger human rights movement in the country.

It draws its inspiration from the Stonewall Riots held in New York, USA in June 1969.

The riots occurred as a mark of protest by sexual minorities in the US against police harassment that was a daily feature of their lives in those days and sparked off what can be said to be the modern movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the West. (ANI)

Muslims tell Kazmi to refuse Kasab’s case

Sunil Shivdasani Mumbai, Apr 19 (PTI) S G Abbas Kazmi, defending lone surviving gunman in November 26 terror attack case Mohammed Amir Ajmal Kasab, today said he had received “feelers” from “certain groups” of minority community, asking him to withdraw from the case but he was firm in his stand to continue. “I am a professional lawyer and have taken Kasab’s brief on the directives of the court,” Azmi told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“My family and friends have been supportive of my decision but certain members of my community have not taken it in the right spirit and sent me feelers to withdraw from the case. My response to them was that the court has appointed me and I have no personal interest in defending Kasab”, he said, responding to the question on public reaction on his taking up Kasab’s case.

There is nothing wrong in defending Kasab and let a message go to one and all that he should be represented by some defence lawyer or else during the judgement he may go scot free on the ground that he had no opportunity to defend himself, Kazmi said. Since no one came forward to offer his services to defend Kasab I thought it would be in the interest of the nation and legal justice that I take up his case, Kazmi added.
