Resentment against BJP at JD (U)’s national executive meet

New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Resentful voices against Bharatiya Janata Party were heard at the Janata Dal (United)’s national executive meet which was held to discuss party’s performance in recent Lok Sabha polls here.

After the meet, JD (U) spokesperson Shivanand Tewari admitted there were some “irritants” in JD-U’s relations with BJP, however, he denied anybody demanding to part ways with the BJP.

“There was no talk of breaking our relationship with BJP in the meeting… In Orissa, (BJD chief) Naveen Patnaiak might have had some such problem with BJP but in Bihar no such problem has cropped up,” Tewari told media persons later.

While admitting that there were complaints by JD(U) units in a few states against BJP’s style of functioning under the alliance, Tewari denied there was no opposition from BJP to Nitish Kumar government’s initiatives for minority welfare schemes.

Bihar JD (U)’s President Rajiv Ranjan Singh wanted BJP to reconsider its stand on certain issues whereas Jharkhand JD-U chief Jaleshwar Mahto charged that State BJP leaders had worked against the two official candidates of JD-U, leading to their defeat, sources said.

Among other issues the National Democratic Alliance’s overall performance was also discussed at the JD (U)’s meet.

The two-day JD(U) national executive meet also deliberated on “certain issues raised by BJP just before the elections” and felt they had damaged the prospects of NDA, Tewari said.

“Just before the election, BJP raised certain issues which were not required…BJP must also contemplate what were the issues that damaged them as it was the bigger partner in NDA and the alliance’s Prime Ministerial candidate was also from BJP. For them it must be more shocking,” Tewari said.

He, however, refused to specify the issues raised by BJP. However, sources, said the relevance of BJP candidate Varun Gandhi’s controversial speech and other statements by other leaders were raised at the meet.

The two-day meet was attended by JD(U) President and NDA acting-convener Sharad Yadav, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and party’s State Presidents, senior leaders and newly-elected party MPs. (ANI)

Best time to judge performances of BJP, Congress: Advani

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani has said the general polls are an opportunity for voters to analyse the performance of the previous BJP-led government with the present Congress party-led regime before taking a decision.

“I don’t say anything else to the people except that this is the best time to judge the performances of the two governments and then decide,” said Advani at an election rally for Jagdish Mukhi, a BJP candidate contesting from West Delhi parliamentary seat, which goes to polls in the fourth phase on May 7.

Seven seats of the national capital are expected to witness a contest between the Congress and the BJP.

Advani also criticised the Central Government on not raising the issue of atrocities on Sikhs in Pakistan.

“If any body behaves with the Sikhs, the way Taliban is behaving in Pakistan, will you silently watch like this government?, asked Advani.

The Taliban demolished at least 11 houses belonging to the Sikh community on Thursday in the Orakzai Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Pakistan after they refused to pay ‘Jazia’.

Jazia is a tax imposed on non-Muslims for their protection. (ANI)

Advani criticises Congress for discontenting people with present administrative set up

They are discontented with present set up. They were not discontented during six years when Vajpayee’s NDA Government was in office. Therefore, it is more related to the present establishment. I would think in India, a general discontentment about the political system is not correct. Samajwadi Party to support Sharad Pawar as PM

Mumbai, Apr 24 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) General Secretary Amar Singh on Friday said his party would support Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar as Prime Minister.

“The NCP is expected to win at least 15 of 21 seats in Maharashtra. Nobody can become Prime Minister with support of 15 MPs. But Pawar is one such person who has friends and supporters in all political parties. The SP will extend support to Pawar as Prime Ministerial candidate,” Singh said during a roadshow here.

SP’s statement came after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jayalalitha said she was ready to back Pawar as PM since he was mature and sincere.

Orissa Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik has also said that he was open to back Pawar as Prime Minister. (ANI)

Advani claims BJP will emerge as the single largest party

Unnao/Rampur/Ahmedabad, Apr 24 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani has said his party would become the single largest party in the next Parliament.

“The BJP is going to emerge as the biggest party in the Lok Sabha elections. Once the result of the election is out, you will see that National Democratic Front led by BJP will form coalition government,” Advani said in a rally in Unnao.

“The whole talk of Third Front and Fourth Front is a joke. There is no basis to these assertions,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Ansari, who is contesting election from Rampur , lashed out at actor-turned-politician Sanjay Dutt.

“I want to say that Sanjay Dutt should stop all filmy gimmicks. He should give an answer to the people as to what he has done so far for Rampur in the past five years. Shedding crocodile tears, making terrorists stand on stage, showing filmy gimmicks, Rampur is not a cinema hall and the people of Rampur are not a film screen. The people of Rampur want to ask them what he has done,” Naqvi said.

In Ahmedabad, Raghu Ram, senior supervising producer at MTV India and the executive producer of the popular reality show MTV Roadies campaigned for Mallika Sarabhai, who is contesting against Advani, an independent from Gandhinagar constituency.

Raghu Ram said he wanted to tell the youth of the country to vote for change.

“I want to tell the youth to reject stagnation. If change does not happen now, we are doomed. You know the kind of threat our nation is facing and you know which government is supporting the terrorists,” said Ram. (ANI)

BJP attacks Cong on ‘black money’ issue

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI) Raising the pitch for bringing back money stashed away by Indians abroad, BJP today took on the Congress for accusing it of raising the ‘black money’ issue with elections in mind. After BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani raised the issue of bringing back Indian money in foreign banks and tax havens, Congress had countered it saying it was being raised ahead of elections for electoral gains, among other reasons.

“In April 2008, Advani had written to the Prime Minister on this issue. The reply the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram sent him showed that the government intended to do little except keep going through the pretence of taking some steps,” senior BJP leader Arun Shourie told reporters.

He said soon thereafter BJP was “alarmed to learn that a senior official of the Finance Ministry had written to the then Indian Ambassador in Germany not to press the Germans for release of the names of Indians.

Lest the Germans take offence and conclude that they were being pressurised”. Shourie said Advani had insisted that the Prime Minister take up this issue at the G-20 summit as countries like Germany, France, USA and UK have been forced by the global meltdown to take leadership role in G-20 and pledge to get their “stolen wealth” back from tax havens.

“BJP believes this is the right time for India to join the global effort to get back its stolen wealth,” he said. PTI.

The Congress is no one to call the BJP communal, says Advani

New Delhi, Apr.18 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani has criticised the Congress for calling his party communal.

“On issues like secularism and communalism the Congress party takes an indefensible stand. Congress never let Lok Sabha function on December 6th when I was Home Minister. Aren’t we tempted to react like wise on October 31st? These issues don’t interest Muslims, only political adversaries,” the senior BJP leader told the TIMES NOW television channel in an interview while en route for campaigning in Bihar.

Referring to the Varun Gandhi issue, he said, “Varun denied the incident, so how can I accuse him? Varun still maintains tapes were doctored. BJP disapprovers and disassociates itself with the alleged statement. National Security Act (NSA) against Varun forced us to react and stand by him.”

Advani said, “Election Commission and Uttar Pradesh government made Varun an issue. For the BJP, Varun episode was a non-issue. Varun should fight the election well and win the election.” Asked about Jayalalitha’s Fourth Front, Advani said, “Jayalalitha is a different category. Jayalalitha has still kept all options open. Jayalalitha’s Ram Mandir manifesto is still self-explanatory.” (ANI)

NDA will form next government, no untouchables in politics: Rajnath Singh

Onboard an aircraft, Apr.15 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh today said that he is confident of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forming the next government at the Centre despite Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaving the NDA ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking to TImes Now, he said that the BJP’s allies would never be deserters.

The BJP president said there are no untouchables in politics and that his party was open to forming post-poll alliances and talks were on with several political parties.

On supporting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, he said, “There is no question of supporting Mayawati.”

He also said that there are no personal issues between BJP’s Prime Ministerial Lal Krishna Advani and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. (ANI)

Fiji faces expulsion from Commonwealth

Wellington, Apr 14 (ANI): Commonwealth secretary-general’s special envoy to Fiji Sir Paul Reeves has said that the island nation faces expulsion from the Commonwealth.

Fiji is likely to be suspended from the Commonwealth, and its membership within the Pacific Islands Forum was also in doubt, Sir Paul said.

The latest turmoil in Fiji was prompted by a Court of Appeal ruling last Thursday that said Commodore Frank Bainimarama’s regime, which has been in power since staging a 2006 coup, was illegal under the country’s 1997 Constitution.

In response, Fiji’s 88-year-old president Ratu Josefa Iloilo sacked the judges, dissolved the Constitution, ruled out any election for five years and briefly removed Bainimarama before re-appointing him as Prime Minister.

Sir Paul, who keeps in constant touch with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, said the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) was due to consider Fiji in September and decide what action to take if no progress towards democratic elections was made.

That meeting is now likely to be bought forward, The Dominion Post reports.

The CMAG provides a mechanism for dealing with Commonwealth member states, which contravene the core obligations of Commonwealth membership, in particular the 1991 Harare Declaration, which sets out principles of good governance.

A further lessening of the relationship with the Commonwealth would see Fiji get less assistance, technical help and leave it more isolated.

“I think that’s bad actually for Fiji and I just hope it doesn’t last long but the Commonwealth has certain standards of membership,” Sir Paul said.

“It has to maintain its adherence to those standards so I think it is highly probable that Fiji will be excluded. The fine print of that of course remains to be determined by the Commonwealth itself,” he added.

At the weekend Forum secretary-general Tuiloma Neroni Slade expressed concern and disappointment over Fiji’s actions. (ANI)

Why is Cong complaining, asks Pawar

Sharad Pawar is running with the hares and hunting with the hounds. His proximity to the Third Front is getting the Congress’s goat but there is little they can do considering the Maratha warlord is as much of an asset as he is a liability.

According to former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, “the NCP is desperately trying to create a so-far non-existent wave in their favour” by promoting Pawar as a Prime Ministerial candidate but now Pawar has shot back with a categorical response: “What is wrong in seeking alliances with other political parties when the Congress itself has limited their alliance with us to just Maharashtra and Goa?” A storm has been created by Pawar’s decision to campaign alongside Naveen Patnaik of the BJD in Orissa tomorrow – critics have said that Pawar is attempting to forge a fourth front within the Third Front in order to strengthen his case for Prime Minister after the elections. Pawar, who was campaigning in Vidarbha on Thursday told Hindustan Times, “Why just Patnaik in Orissa? I tried for an alliance with Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, too and one with Farooq Abdullah in Jammu and Kashmir.

But these attempts fell through. However, having been given one Lok Sabha seat and eight Assembly seats by Patnaik, it is my bounden duty to stand shoulder to shoulder with him as he launches his campaign tomorrow and help him win as many seats as possible.

” Asked if this will not send out the wrong message, Pawar said: “We accepted the Congress’s decision to go for state-wise alliances without question. Now they should have no problems if we seek our own alliances in other states.

Every UPA ally has the right to do that. The only party that is taboo to every other UPA party is the BJP. And if you talk about the Left parties, well, the NCP has an MLA in Kerala who won with the support of the Left.

So they have been our allies long before these elections.” While Pawar’s tactics are making the Congress nervous, his supporters say the Congress should consider that the NCP chief is keeping a line open to all Third Front leaders – he could be the bridge that might help Patnaik to join the UPA and also give an honourable entry back to the Left parties should the numbers dictate another Congress-led government at the Centre.

Pawar adds: “In the states, I am an ally of some of the non-BJP-NDA parties. In the Centre, of course, I am sitting firmly with the UPA.” The question that worries the Congress is: for how long?.

Prime Minister Dr. Singh should debate with Advani, says Arun Shourie

Kolkata, March 30 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Shourie on Monday said that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh should not hesitate from joining BJP leader L.K. Advani in a public debate.

The public would know the ability of the person who deserves to be their prime minister, said Arun Shourie, who was here to participate in an interactive session organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

“Dr. Manmohan Singh is not God. People of the country have the right to judge who has the ability to become the Prime Minister,” said Arun Shourie.

“Dr Singh should be forced through media and citizen activism to accept the challenge issued by BJP leader L. K. Advani for a public debate,” said Shourie while adding: “Important issues needed to be discussed and the people had the right to information, the right to know what the Prime Ministerial candidates thought on core issues facing the nation.”

Shourie, on this occasion, also questioned the Election Commission on advising political parties on the selection of their candidates.

He said the Election Commission had no business issuing advisories to political parties on who should be a candidate, as it did in the Varun Gandhi’s case.

“If at all the Election Commission wanted to do that, then the same advisory should go to all political parties, Shourie said and pointed out that “when candidates like Mukhtar Ansari with a long list of criminal cases against them were in the fray, then why was the Election Commission not issuing similar advisories them instead of singling out just the BJP.” By Ajitha Menon(ANI)

Indian political leaders ‘fight’ in virtual world

Hyderabad, Mar 18 (ANI): Before the actual battle of seats and votes during elections, political leaders are determining their strength by running races, taking long jumps and swimming in the virtual world in amusing games developed here.

As the election fever grips and leaders are turning to Internet campaigning, 7Seas Technologies Limited, a Hyderabad-based IP-game developing company, has launched the innovative programme related to polls.

The company has developed five amusing games namely ‘Who Wins’, a set of political Olympic games, Who Wins2, ‘Vote Fun’, ‘Vote a Leader’ and ‘Political War’ in the backdrop of Indian political scenario.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate L. K. Advani and Bhaujan Samaj party (BSP) chief Mayawati, an aspiring prime ministerial candidate, are the main characters in the game.

The main characters in the games dressed as athletes with bulging biceps, are vying for prime minister’s seat by competing in tug-of-war, running, javelin throw, swimming, and long jump among other contests.

“Based on the animated characters and caricatures, we wanted to give political awareness and to play a game which is free and encouragement for them to actually select their favourite leader to support them and indirectly make them win over others. So that was the basic concept behind doing these political games,” said L. Maruthi Shanker, Managing Director of 7seas Technologies Limited.

A few regional political leaders of Andhra Pradesh namely Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, N. Chandrababu Naidu chief of Telugu Desam, Chiranjeevi, chief of Praja Rajyam Party and N Jayaprakash Narayan chief of Lok Satta party are also used as animated characters in the games.

The designer said that such games are developed approximately in two to three months.

“It took a long time for designing these games because each of these games come with a different type of variety and animation. A rough estimate for these kinds of games, it took around two and a half months,” said Abhi Bhattacharya, designer of the games.

Once just outsourcing sweatshops that sketched, painted and digitized ordered content, animation and gaming firms are now aiming high-claiming ownership of their products and sharing copyrights and profits.

According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies, the market is expected to grow to about 1.3 billion dollars this year from about 300 million dollars in 2006, and employ about 30,000 animators alone. By Narendra (ANI)
