How some people maintain weight loss, others don’t

Washington, Sep 16 (ANI): Ever wondered how some people successfully maintain a significant weight loss, while others tend to regain the weight? Well, researchers at The Miriam Hospital attribute such tendencies to a difference in brain activity patterns.

The researchers showed that when individuals who had kept the weight off for several years were shown pictures of food, they were more likely to engage the areas of the brain associated with behavioural control and visual attention, as compared to obese and normal weight participants.

The findings of the study suggest that successful weight loss maintainers may learn to respond differently to food cues.

“Our findings shed some light on the biological factors that may contribute to weight loss maintenance. They also provide an intriguing complement to previous behavioral studies that suggest people who have maintained a long-term weight loss monitor their food intake closely and exhibit restraint in their food choices,” said lead author Dr. Jeanne McCaffery.

Long-term weight loss maintenance continues to be a major problem in obesity treatment.

Participants in behavioural weight loss programs lose an average of 8 to 10 percent of their weight during the first six months of treatment, and will maintain approximately two-thirds of their weight loss after one year.

However, despite intensive efforts, weight regain appears to continue for the next several years, with most patients returning to their baseline weight after five years.

The researchers used functional magnetic resource imaging (fMRI) to study the brain activity of three groups- 18 individuals of normal weight, 16 obese individuals (defined as a body mass index of at least 30), and 17 participants who have lost at least 30 lbs and have successfully maintained that weight loss for a minimum of three years.

When the participants were shown pictures of food items after a four-hour fast, it was found that those in the successful weight loss maintenance group responded differently to these pictures compared to the other groups.

Specifically, researchers observed strong signals in the left superior frontal region and right middle temporal region of the brain – a pattern consistent with greater inhibitory control in response to food images and greater visual attention to food cues.

“It is possible that these brain responses may lead to preventive or corrective behaviors – particularly greater regulation of eating – that promote long-term weight control. However, future research is needed to determine whether these responses are inherent within an individual or if they can be changed,” said McCaffery.

The study has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (ANI)

White supremacist who planned to bomb Asians and blacks in Britain jailed indefinitely

London, Sep. 9 (ANI): A white supremacist was given an indefinite jail term by a British court after being found guilty of planning a bomb attack on Asians and blacks.

Pro-Nazi Neil Lewington, 43, was branded as “a dangerous man who exhibits emotional coldness and detachment”, The Sun reports.

Racist fanatic Lewington will have to serve a minimum of six years before even being considered for release.

Judge Peter Thornton said: “I accept that in ordinary language, you are an oddball – eccentric, dysfunctional and sometimes immature. But I do not accept you are no more than a pest. My assessment is that you are a dangerous man.”

Lewington was on the verge of launching a bomb blitz on those he considered “non-Britons” when he was arrested by chance for being drunk on a railway station.

Cops found two homemade firebombs in the jobless electrician’s bag.

And when they searched the home he shared with his parents in Reading, Berks, they discovered a bomb factory in his bedroom and plans to make shrapnel grenades from tennis balls and nuts.

They also found a notebook entitled “Waffen SS UK members’ handbook”.

Lewington wrote a chapter in it headed “Targeting or attacking Pakis.”

Lewington’s bedroom contained fascist propaganda including videos of Right-wing terrorists such as London nail bomber David Copeland and Oklahoma fiend Timothy McVeigh.

He was found guilty of five terrorism and two explosives charges at an earlier Old Bailey trial.

His parents, who were present in court, revealed that he had not spoken to his father for a decade. (ANI)

Flintoff suffering from deep vein thrombosis post surgery

London, Sep.7 (ANI): England cricket hero Andrew Flintoff is suffering from deep vein thrombosis in his right calf after knee surgery.

The 31-year-old all-rounder underwent an operation following the conclusion of this summer’s Ashes tournament.

A Sky News report said Flintoff could be sidelined for a minimum of six months.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement read: “Andrew Flintoff recently suffered a common complication of surgery, a minor deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. This will require a simple course of treatment and will not complicate his recovery from surgery.”

Flintoff retired from test cricket after playing in four of the five Ashes tests against Australia. England won the series 2-1.

He had announced his retirement before the second test at Lord’s following the latest in a series of career-threatening injuries.

But ‘Freddie’ is hoping to continue playing one-day and Twenty20 internationals. (ANI)

O.J. Simpson’s request to be freed on bail denied

Washington, Sep 5 (ANI): Convicted felon O.J. Simpson’s request to be freed on bail, as he appeals his kidnap and robbery conviction, has been denied by a court in Nevada.

Simpson, 62, is currently serving a minimum of nine years in prison after he was found guilty of masterminding a heist on two sports memorabilia dealers’ hotel room in September 2007, reports Contactmusic.

The former American footballer turned actor was convicted in December (08), and in May this year he lodged an appeal claiming judicial misconduct, a lack of racial diversity on the jury and errors in sentencing and jury instructions.

Simpson’s lawyer, Yale Galanter, asked the Nevada Supreme Court to release the former athlete on bail, arguing that his client is “not a flight risk” and would not leave the U.S. (ANI)

US should conduct ‘offshore’ strikes on Afghanistan

Washington, Sep.2 (ANI): A leading conservative columnist, George Will, has called on the Obama administration to pull American troops out of Afghanistan, and instead focus on fighting from “offshore” by means of “intelligence, drones, cruise missiles, air strikes and small, potent Special Forces units.”

According to the Washington Post, there seems to be some merit in waging an “offshore” war, given the success that has been achieved in neighbouring Pakistan against the Taliban with the help of Predator drone strikes, minimum troop deployment and contractors. The acknowledged U.S. toll: zero dead. That’s in stark contrast to the 813 Americans killed so far in Afghanistan.

Obama faces a key decision in coming weeks on Afghanistan. He has already sent 21,000 additional troops there this year, boosting the U.S. total there to 68,000, along with some 40,000 NATO allies.

US commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal is likely to ask him for more – most likely 10,000 to 20,000 – just as the President wrestles with health-care reform and a still-feeble economy.

Stephen Biddle of the Council on Foreign Relations, who has been advising General McChrystal, says that drones don’t work everywhere. They can be easily shot down by even a “third-rate air force,” he says.

He also says using drones to eliminate enemy personnel needs good intelligence from sources on the ground, something that would melt away should the Taliban reclaim power.

Biddle isn’t overly concerned about Afghanistan falling, again, into the hands of the Taliban. But he is concerned about its nuclear-armed neighbor.

“At some level, the loss of Afghanistan could be tolerated,” he says. “There’s nothing especially unique about Afghanistan as a haven for striking the U.S. Yemen, Djibouti or Somalia could play that role – there are lots of ill-governed spaces around the world that could. But Afghanistan is unique in its proximity to Pakistan, and its potential role in destabilizing Pakistan if Kabul falls under a Taliban government,” he says.

Andrew Bacevich, a retired Army colonel, says the drone strikes are paying off in Pakistan because of that nation’s “quasi-legitimate government and reasonably effective army” – neither of which Afghanistan has.

But he does call the war “misguided and unnecessary,” and argues the U.S. should work with the country’s tribal chiefs to ensure stability in their respective valleys.

And offshore spy-and-strike capabilities could, at a minimum, keep al-Qaeda off-balance in the region “and optimally destroy whatever entity is engaged in a plot,” Bacevich says. (ANI)

Top UN official lauds women’s empowerment and representation in India

New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): Top United Nations official Deirdre Boyd on Tuesday said that women’s political representation in the local bodies of India is more than the entire elected women representatives of the world.

Deirdre Boyd, Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India, said this during a function to mark the release of ‘The Millennium Development Goals (MGD) Report 2009′ at New Delhi on Tuesday.

“There are lot of success stories of women empowerment in India particularly when we look at the women’s political representation at the local level. India has nearly one million locally elected leaders…more than the elected women representatives of the world put together,” said Deirdre Boyd.

She also hailed the new Union Budget that was revealed on Monday and said that the new proposals will help in achieving the Minimum Development Goals (MDGs) specified by the UN.eirdre Boyd also added that India has made progress in areas of poverty eradication and primary education.

The Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 has observed that in India there has been a gain of 11 per cent in primary school enrolment between 2000 and 2007. The report also mentions about the progress made by India in the arena of enrolment of girls in the schools.

Further, the report has highlighted the progress made by India to combat AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

“Progress has been made in addressing problems of HIV-AIDS, but other diseases like malaria and tuberculosis in particular have made a comeback. It (tuberculosis) is the real challenge that many countries in South Asia including India will face,” said Biswajit Dhar, Director General, Research and Information System for Developing Countries, United Nations. Omar Abdullah rules out immediate withdrawal of CRPF from J-K

Srinagar, July 7 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday ruled out immediate withdrawal of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from the state, saying that the state police would have to expand in numbers, equipment and levels of training before taking any action.

Abdullah, who had meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi on Monday, informed that he had raised the issue of withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in a phased manner.

“We have over 70 battalions of the CRPF and the state police’s strength is not even one-third of it. Five battalions of the state police which includes India Reserve Police are undergoing training. So any rash decision in this aspect can be detrimental to state s security,” Abdullah said.

“A lot is required to be done in terms of augmenting the numbers of J and K police, upgrading their equipment and improving their levels of training,” he added.

Meanwhile, withdrawal of the AFSPA is being planned in a phased manner.

“The issue of AFSPA was flagged by me and the Union Home Minister in the first meeting itself and now we are toying with an idea of having it withdrawn in a phased manner, where the violence is nil or bare minimum, in such areas this law need not be applicable,” Abdullah said.

While Abdullah refused to provide any detail about the areas from where AFSPA would be withdrawn, according to reports, the Centre is likely to withdraw forces in a phased manner from Srinagar, Budgam, Jammu and Kathua districts of the state, as these districts have registered minimum violence for past one year. India Inc. disappointed with Mukherjee’s budget for 2009-10

New Delhi/Mumbai, July 6 (ANI): India Incorporated on Monday reacted with disappointment to the proposals for Budget 2009-10 introduced by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

It said that Mukherjee had remained silent on key points like the revamp of fuel policy, corporate tax, and the disinvestment roadmap.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex suffered the biggest fall on any Budget day and in the year too by plunging over 869 points on the BSE on concerns at the high fiscal deficit (6.8 percent) set by the Union Budget.

The Sensex, which started coming down soon after the announcement of budgetary proposals, dipped below the 14,000-point level before closing 869.65 points down at 14,043.40, surpassing the hefty fall of 749 points on January 7.

The key index had touched the day’s low of 13,959.44 as all the heavyweight stocks led by Reliance Industries suffered a heavy loss 6.53 per cent. Besides the fiscal deficit, trading sentiment also affected as European stocks dipped to a seven-week low on worries that economic recovery might still be far way off. The 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty also tumbled by 258.55 points to 4,135.70, after hitting the day’s low of 4,133.70.

Banking sector stocks suffered the most, losing 8.17 per cent to 7,768.63, as ICICI Bank tumbled by 10 per cent and HDFC Bank by 5.88 per cent among lenders as the Budget did not have measures to open up the industry and on concerns that the borrowing plan will reduce the value of bond holdings, brokers said.

Apart from the fiscal deficit, the other worry for captains of industry was the hike in Minimum Alternate Tax from ten to fifteen percent.

The Nifty also gave a thumbs down to the budget announcements.

Mukherjee left the corporate tax, customs and excise duty structure unchanged. He abolished the Fringe Benefit Tax which was the bugbear of the industry. Also, the deadline for Corporate India’s demand for a rollout of Goods and Services Tax has been set as April 2010.

He left the Securities Tax unchanged but scrapped the Commodities Transaction Tax. (ANI)

World powers trying to divide Pakistan, says NWFP Governor

Lahore, June 29 (ANI): NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani has said that there is a “great game” being played in the region, and some world powers were trying to divide Pakistan.

He told a private TV channel that Pakistan would emerge stronger than ever from the crises currently plaguing it, and added that if he were not a governor, he would have exposed them.

Concerning his statement that NATO forces and Afghan militants were attempting to weaken Pakistan, he claimed there was a difference between their (NATO) stated objectives and their actions, which were undermining Pakistan.

The NWFP Governor said he had told several US officials, including General Petraeus, Richard Boucher and Richard Holbrooke, that they would have to talk to Afghan leaders such as Mullah Omer if they wanted to resolve the Afghan issue.

He said thinking they could find a purely military solution to the political problems in Afghanistan was “foolish”, and suggested a lack of understanding of the issue on the part of the US.

Ghani said the US should review its policy on Afghanistan, adding the groups in Afghanistan would have to be involved in finding a solution to the Afghan problem.

The NWFP Governor said it was an undisputed fact that every bullet, every gram of heroin, and every rocket in Pakistan came from Afghanistan. He said the 15,000 or so armed Taliban fighting in Pakistan were being funded by foreign powers, including the drug mafia from Afghanistan.

He also criticised the Americans for allowing poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, saying this had turned Afghanistan into a narcotic-state, the Daily Times reported.

Ghani alleged that the drug warlords in Afghanistan were the political partners of the US and NATO. He said the Pakistan government had reduced the poppy cultivation in FATA to a minimum.

However, Ghani admitted around 40 percent of narcotics from Afghanistan were being smuggled to the rest of the world through Pakistan. (ANI)

Police take back Lalgarh from Maoists

Lalgarh, June 20 (ANI): Security forces in West Bengal’s Midnapore on Saturday declared to have regained control over the troubled Lalgarh area of West Bengal.

According to Director General Of Police, Midnapore, Praveen Kumar, they have regained control of Lalgarh, which was captured by Maoist rebels in one of the most brazen attacks in recent years.

“For 36 hours at a stretch they were at the basic minimum. The task was difficult but it has been achieved but it is not the only job that we are here for. The main job is that the authority of state, authority of the administration and the confidence of the people has to be restored in the rule of law,” said Praveen Kumar.

Earlier, hundreds of Maoists, who were expanding their influence across the country, had chased away police and killed government supporters from around Lalgarh, which they declared a “liberated zone”.

Marching behind an anti-landmine vehicle, hundreds of police in flak jackets and combat gear had entered the town of Lalgarh.

Personnel of the CRPF, BSF, State Armed Police, Eastern Frontier Rifles and the Kolkata Police besides the elite anti naxal force COBRA were involved in the operation. (ANI)

China targets illegal Internet bars

Beijing, May 29 (ANI): The Chinese Government has decided to target illegal Internet cafes as part of its four-month crackdown to stop teenagers from accessing harmful and violent content.

Internet bars located in rural areas, joint rural-urban areas, and locations surrounding middle and primary schools are the main targets of the campaign, the China daily reports.

“Illegal Internet bars are harming left-behind rural teenagers that lack parental care because their parents are away trying to make a living in cities,” the paper quoted Zhou Yongping, deputy director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, as saying in a national teleconference on Thursday.

The campaign will run from June 1 until September 30, with the participation of the administration, the ministries of public security, culture, and industry and information technology, as well as the civilization office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Zhou said local authorities would confiscate facilities and equipment belonging to illegal businesses, instead of simply punishing violators with fines. Those found violating laws would also face criminal punishment.

Tao Ran, a medical expert on Internet addiction at Beijing’s Military General Hospital, said illegal cafes lured many pupils and middle school students away from their studies.

They could access unhealthy content, including obscene and violent images and even information about gun sales and weapons, he said.

Tao welcomed the campaign but worried that it would only have an impact in the short term.

“The overall general public will be mobilized to participate in the campaign,” Zhou said.

The number of illegal Internet cafes is growing because of demand, the limited number of legal outlets, limited access to the Web and a lack of enforcement, Tao said.

Illegal Internet bars make large profits because they have much lower costs compared to registered outlets. Underground Internet bars also have poor quality computers, so even if they have many terminals the businesses are still cheaper to operate.

A national regulation released in 2004 requires the owners of registered Internet cafes to have a minimum of 1 million in the bank, 200 computers and an operating area of more than 300 sq m. (ANI)

Termite Season Approaches: Tips for Homeowners

AUSTIN, Texas, April 15 /PRNewswire/ — With the arrival of late spring,
homeowners need to be on guard for an annual menace that threatens their
homes: termites. April and May are the height of termite season – the time
when the temperature is just right for termites to begin swarming out of their
nests to build new colonies in another location. These “swarmers” look a lot
like flying ants – but the damage they can do in the long run is much more
serious.

Homeowners who see flying termites in their area should be aware of the
following tips, courtesy of Killthetermites.com:

First, you need to find out if they came from your property. Termites commonly
live underground, but tunnel into your house to eat the wood as a food source.
Be on the lookout for tunnels on your home made of mud. If the swarmers seem
to be mostly indoors, it’s a good sign you’re already infested.

Second, turn off your lights at night if you see swarmers in your area. Like
most bugs, they’re attracted to the light, and will go straight for your home.

If you think the termites are coming from your property, you should get it
inspected by a professional. It’s very difficult to get rid of termites on
your own, and the damage they can do is severe.

If they’re coming over from the neighbor’s property, you need to take a
different approach. Make sure to warn your neighbor about it. If they won’t
call out the exterminator (or can’t afford to), you’re in a bind – your house
will be ground zero in both the spring and the fall. You’ll want to, at a
minimum, get annual inspections. Don’t panic – it can take years for termites
to actually do any serious damage. However, you should ask a local pest
control professional about installing a bait system in your yard. These
systems use wooden bait to serve as both a warning sign and a way to kill
termites. The exterminator can check the bait stations to see if there has
been any activity. Any termites that eat from them will also spread poison to
the budding colony.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to do a regular inspection on your own -
looking for mud tubes, sawdust, bubbles in the paint on your walls, or small
holes in exposed wood.
