Great Recession Doesn’t Slow the Greening of GE

Ecomagination continues to pay big dividends for General Electric, according to its just-released sustainability report.

After investing $1.5 billion in ecomagination products since 2005 — and growing the portfolio from 17 products to 90 — GE has earned $18 billion in revenue on ecomagination products. The success of ecomagination has led the company to greatly increase its investment in the coming years, putting an additional $8.5 billion in R&D investments in ecomagination by 2015.

With its sixth annual report, entitled “Renewing Responsibilities,” GE set a goal of growing ecomagination revenues twice as fast as the company itself grows.

Of course, in the wake of the Great Recession, the company isn’t necessarily growing that fast — revenues in 2009 declined by 14 percent — but ecomagination revenues were up 6 percent in 2009.

Despite the economic hit GE has taken, the companies overarching environmental initiatives are having an even larger impact on its footprint: Its overall intensities in water use, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are down more than 30 percent each, with emissions intensity down 39 percent and overall emissions down 22 percent.

GE continues to set ambitious environmental goals on its intensities — the amount of resources used per million dollars of revenue — including a goal of 50 percent reductions in energy intensity from its 2004 baseline, a 25 percent reduction in emissions over a 2004 baseline, and a 30 percent reduction in water intensity over a 2006 baseline.

The full report is available online and in downloadable format from GE.com/Citizenship.

Court rejects Oz woman”s claim for $278k a month in divorce settlement

Melbourne, June 11 (ANI): An Australian woman”s claim for 278,000 dollars a month in spousal maintenance from her ex-husband for herself and her only son, has been rejected by the Family Court.

The wife, who cannot be named, applied for the money before a final settlement from her husband, whose wealth has been estimated at between 77 million dollars and 110 million dollars, reports the Courier Mail.

She also wanted a 24 million dollars property settlement, including a 3.3 million dollars chalet in Switzerland, and 1.2 million dollars a year to pay for four full-time carers for their son, who has autism.

She has already extracted 16 million dollars from the pool of marital assets but told the court the money had been spent on legal fees and living expenses, and she needed more to cover her costs pending a final settlement.

The couple from Adelaide met in the late 1980s and married in 1994, and their only child was born in 1996.

The wife claims the child has autism and needs the support of four full-time carers, three of whom are her own siblings, who are being paid 110,000 dollars a year.

The husband”s legal team is contesting the claim.

In an earlier hearing – there have been 28 so far – the court heard that the boy had become “very much the little prince” in his home, where “paid helpers work to fit around him”.

A child psychologist, who cannot be named, said the boy operated in a “comfort zone, where he basically gets his own way most of the time”.

The father, whose declared income is 300,000 dollars a week, and who has been living in Hong Kong with his new wife since 2008, has been fighting in court to see his son since 2007.

The court has tried to set up meetings, but the wife has failed to deliver the boy, saying he becomes extremely anxious when told he must see his father.

In the most recent hearing of the matter, before judge Christine Dawe in Adelaide, the wife made her claim for 278,000 dollars a month in spousal support backdated to 2005.

The husband proposed paying 10,788 dollars a week or 560,000 dollars a year for the boy”s care and education. He recently paid 691,000 dollars into a trust fund to cover bills.

The wife backed her claim with a statement of recent expenditure, showing 4624 dollars spent on balloons and flowers for the child”s 14th birthday party, and 97,000 dollars for a new car, although she has one valued at “more than half a million dollars”.

Her legal fees to queen”s counsel were listed at 125,000 dollars a month during the trial.

Her own weekly expenses were put at 6254 dollars a week, including 2300 dollars for holidays, and 800 dollars for clothes.

The wife”s claim for an interim property settlement was rejected pending the full hearing, as was the claim for 278,000 dollars a week in spousal maintenance.

The court did, however, grant her 375,000 dollars in a lump sum, pending the full hearing, which may be held later this year. (ANI)

Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz to star in final chapter of ‘Twilight’ saga

New York, May 20 (ANI): Actors Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz have been signed for ‘Breaking Dawn’, the fourth part of ‘Twilight’ movie series.

Both the stars will join Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the fourth and the last version.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, stars were reportedly demanding for their price hike but the duo have settled pay disputes over the ‘Twilight’ saga’s final chapter, reports the New York Post.

Movie studio Summit Entertainment, which has made billions off the franchise, has been negotiating with the two supporting characters since last week, but the two actors reportedly wanted increase in their pay for the next flick.

Since the studio did not allow them to renegotiate on the second and third films.

“The studio realized how valuable Ashley and Kellan are to the franchise and did what they needed to do to keep them,” said a source close to the situation.

The duo have settled for 1.25 million dollars per film now, their characters are reportedly slated to get more screen time in the ‘Breaking Dawn’ segments. (ANI)

Anne Hathaway makes no claim over former conman lover’s gifts

New York, May 18 (ANI): Actress Anne Hathaway has made no claim over the gifts she received from her ex-boyfriend/scam-artist Raffaello Follieri.

The stunner, 27, had until February to file a petition asserting ownership of her gifts from con man Follieri, but neither she nor any other “third parties” have staked a claim, prosecutors claimed.

In August 20008, the actress coughed up a dozen luxury items after Follieri was busted on charges of ripping off some 13 million dollars from investors.

The items include two Rolex watches, a pair of silver-colored earrings with “blue and clear stones,” a silver-colored chain with a cross pendant, two gold-colored rings, a five-strand pearl necklace and a Louis Vuitton box.

The goods will soon be auctioned off to repay Follieri”s victims, including supermarket magnate and Bill Clinton pal Ron Burkle.

Prosecutors are waiting for a final forfeiture order to take official ownership of Hathaway”s former accessories, reports the New York Post.

Manhattan federal Judge John Koeltl said he would issue a final forfeiture order if no objections are filed by May 26. (ANI)

Pak, US decide to resolve visa row

Islamabad, May 18 (ANI): Both Pakistan and United States have reportedly agreed to resolve all issues concerning the delay in issuing visas to each other’s diplomats.

According to sources, senior officials of both countries met each other at the Foreign Office here last week to resolve the visa row as soon as possible.

During the meeting both sides decided that no delay would be made in issuing visas from now, The News quoted sources privy to the meeting, as saying.

The United States had told Pakistan to put in place a uniform visa mechanism so that its diplomats and embassy staff stationed in Islamabad do not face any difficulty in carrying out their work in the country.

Delay in issuing visas to US officials has affected the relationship between the two countries.

Angered over Islamabad’s stubborn attitude over the issue, the Obama Administration had linked the reimbursement of funds under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) with issuance of visas to US auditors and other officials.

Pakistan has so far received 700 million dollars of the 2.6 billion dollars claimed under the CSF over the last two years, and is claiming another 1.2 billion dollars under the aid.

Pakistan has long been demanding an early release of the funds, however, the White House had made it clear that it would release the remaining amount only after being assured of positive use of the financial package.

The US also linked the delay in the disbursement of funds to Pakistan’s denial to grant visas to American auditors.

Arm-twisting Pakistan over the delay in issuing visas to its auditors, the United States had told Islamabad that the remaining payment under the CSF would only be released after the American officials get their visas. (ANI)

Tyra Banks not a hit with future neighbours

New York, May 18 (ANI): Tyra Banks might be a hit among her viewers, but the same might not hold true for her future neighbours at Riverhouse in Battery Park City.

The model-cum-TV host bought four apartments there for 10 million dollars last year.

And Banks has undertaken extensive renovations as she combines them into a single home.

This has driven other building residents mad, so much that they called police to complain about the noise, reports the New York Post.

However, the only neighbour who stayed out of the mayhem was Leonardo DiCaprio. (ANI)

Srilanka”s leader of opposition meets Krishna

New Delhi, May 11 (ANI): Srilanka”s leader of opposition Ranil Wickramasinghe met External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The two leaders discussed several bilateral issues, including the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Wickramasinghe, who is the leader of the United National Party, arrived here on Monday on a four-day visit to India.

India had earlier offered Sri Lanka 100 million dollars to help war refugees return home and rebuild the country”s ravaged north, as New Delhi is keen to be engaged in the island nation”s post-war reconstruction and retain influence.

Some 260,000 Tamil refugees who fled fighting in the waning months of the war are now being held in military-run camps in Sri Lanka.

Western countries, India and the United Nations are pressing the Srilanka government to send them home. (ANI)

Many Hollywood actors ‘suck’ at their jobs, says Mickey Rourke

Melbourne, May 08 (ANI): ‘The Wrestler’ star Mickey Rourke thinks many Hollywood actors ‘suck’ at their jobs.

Mickey, who has been promoting ‘Iron Man 2’, says he doesn’t respect many actors and claims that many of them ‘suck,’ reports the Daily Telegraph.

The 57-year-old star said, “You can be less than mediocre and be a f*****g movie star. I have respect for very few actors and actresses. Some of them get a lot of acclaim but just because their movie made 200 million dollars at the box office; they still suck. I got no respect for them and I used to let them know it.”

However, the leading man who received critical acclaim for his role as Randy ””The Ram”” Robinson”” in ””The Wrestler”” prefers to avoid arguments with other artists and clearly maintains dignity when he doesn’t like the co-star.

“It was important for me to put that aside and go, ””You know what? This is a business. If you kiss the right a*s and you get lucky on a movie or two, you could last 10 years.”” So, now, I just keep my mouth shut and pet my Chihuahuas,” he told Parade.com. (ANI)

NZ Cricket to get a million dollars from IPL franchises

Wellington, May 5 (ANI): New Zealand cricket will get a million dollars if Central Districts’ three Indian Premier League players are wanted by their franchises for Champions League in South Africa.

Ross Taylor (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Jacob Oram (Chennai Super Kings) and Graham Napier (Mumbai Indians) are eligible to play for both their IPL teams and New Zealand representatives Central Districts, but a clause in the IPL players’ contracts means the Indians get the first choice.

In return, the IPL teams would have to pay NZC 342,000 New Zealand dollars per player as compensation.

Taylor is a regular for Bangalore and is almost certain to be protected in their squad, The Dominion Post reports.

He has also qualified for Victoria and may do the same with English county Durham but has said that he will play for Central Districts in the Champions League if not required by Bangalore.

Oram was injured and didn”t play a match for IPL winners Chennai but his all-round qualities make him a valuable performer when in form.

“If his home team in England qualify, then that’s where the payment would be made,” Players Association boss Heath Mills said.

If Essex didn’t qualify and Mumbai want Napier, Mills said he would doubt if Central would profit, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Mills is negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with NZC and it had not yet been decided how Champions League money would be split up between the provinces. (ANI)

Sydney, May 4 (ANI): A Brisbane couple is said to have joked about winning an unclaimed lotto, only to find out that it was their ticket that had won the 15 million dollars Powerball prize in the first place.

The two had not bothered to check their numbers after someone mistakenly told them the mystery winner, who bought the ticket in Toombul, had been found, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The couple, aged in their 30s, who want to remain anonymous, say the reality of their enormous win is still sinking in.

They plan to give some of their winnings to their parents.

They had bought the same type of ticket as the other 15 million dollar winner in the draw – a 12 game Quick Pick worth 8.35 dollar. (ANI)

US should end discrimination towards Pak to ink civil nuke deal: Qureshi

Islamabad, May 4 (ANI): Reiterating the country’s long standing demand, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that the United States must end its ‘discriminatory’ behaviour and enter into a civil nuclear deal to help it address the massive energy crisis prevailing in the country.

During a meeting with US Congressman Howard Burman, Qureshi said Washington must help Islamabad to resurrect the sluggish economy and issues like the huge electricity and water crises, The Dawn reports.

Qureshi told Burman that the counter-terrorism efforts would not achieve the desired results unless the US provides monetary assistance it has pledged under the Kerry-Lugar Bill and Coalition Support Fund (CSF)

Meanwhile, the US has released the final instalment of 467 million dollars under the CSF as reimbursement for Pakistan for the cost incurred during the counterinsurgency operation in 2009.

The CSF was established by the United States in 2001 to support 27 nations, including Pakistan, for some of the costs they incurred in anti-terror operations. Since 2001, Washington has reimbursed approximately 7.2 billion to various countries.

In addition to the CSF, Pakistan has received a total of four billion dollars in civilian and security assistance from the US over the last three years. (ANI)

How the net has made William Shatner richer by $600M

New York, May 04 (ANI): ‘Star Trek’ star William Shatner, who asked for stocks instead of cash when he became pitchman for the Internet travel company Priceline.com in 1997, has made a startling 600 million dollars – thanks to his early decision.

According to The Toronto Sun, Priceline’s shares are currently trading close to 300-dollar apiece. And although the company won’t disclose how many shares Shatner receives, it’s reported to be plenty.

A decade ago during the dot.com bust, the stock was selling for less than 2-dollar a share, reports The New York Post.

It was around the same time Shatner got into the commercials. (ANI)

Jackie Chan in earthquake charity concert

London, April 28 (ANI): Jackie Chan and more than hundred stars from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan participated in a charity concert to raise money for earthquake victims in China.

The five-hour concert in Hong Kong raised 4.8 million dollars for victims of the disaster in China’s Qinghai that killed more than 2,200 people earlier this month.

Chan visited the affected area last week, featured in a video produced for the fundraiser, which showed him living with the victims, reports The BBC.

“The quake area is located in a plateau. It”s ten times worse than we thought. And the winter will come soon. It is urgent to take action,” said actor Andy Lau.

One week after the area was devastated by the disaster, China observed a national day of mourning for victims. (ANI)

Ready to take action against Zardari in Swiss laundering case on SC directives: Pak AG

Islamabad, Apr.28 (ANI): Pakistan’s newly appointed Attorney General Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq has said that he is ready to write a letter to the Swiss government for reopening the money laundering cases against President Asif Ali Zardari if the apex court directs him to do so.

“I have gone through the judgment and the court has ordered the same that this should be a formal letter written in accordance with the rules of business and you better know what it means,” The News quoted Haq, as saying.

It may noted that Switzerland”s Attorney General (AG) Daniel Zappelli had already clarified that corruption cases against Zardari cannot be reopened, as he enjoys constitutional immunity.

Zappelli said Geneva could not open the money-laundering cases against Zardari even if it receives an official request from Islamabad.

“According to international rules, which Switzerland also applies, any chief of a state, prime minister or foreign affairs minister of any country enjoys absolute immunity,” Zappelli had said.

He, however, said that Pakistan”s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had requested the Swiss government to reopen the cases, but the documents were not complete according to official requirements.

Zardari and his assassinated wife Benazir Bhutto , were convicted by a Geneva court in 2003 of laundering 13 million dollars linked to kickbacks, but that verdict was overturned on appeal. In 2008, Swiss judicial authorities said they had closed the file related to the case.

Zappelli had earlier said that Pakistan”s embassy in Switzerland had officially notified him in June 2008 of a decision by Pakistan”s prosecutor-general in April to withdraw proceedings against Zardari.

A trial for money laundering in Switzerland would have to be based on the proceedings of the criminal activity, but that would require proof that a crime had been committed, he had said. (ANI)

Now, Musharraf accused of selling properties ‘gifted’ by Indonesian Prez for ‘peanuts’

Islamabad, Apr.28 (ANI): A report prepared by the Pakistan Foreign Affairs Ministry has charged former President General Pervez Musharraf and his cronies of selling government owned non-movable properties in Jakarta at the rate of peanuts.

The report said the government-owned Chancery building and the ambassador’s residence in Jakarta, which were gifted to Musharraf by former Indonesian President Soeakarno, were sold in 2002 by passing all rules and regulations.

The report indicts former Pakistani ambassador to Indonesia Major General (retired) Mustafa Anwar Hussain for the irregular sale of the ‘gifted’ properties, saying he forced the authorities to sideline normal procedures in order to avoid heavy penalties.

The report noted that the ambassador’s huge residence was sold for a mere f 2.28 million dollars.

The foreign ministry had even told Hussain that he cannot proceed with the deal without the approval of the inter-ministerial committee, and asked him to refrain from finalising the agreement.

However, he went ahead with the sale, claiming he had acted in line with “a directive by the chief executive on the sale of both properties,” The Daily Times reports.

Quoting the then defence attaché Colonel. Khalid Mehmood, the report says that Hussain and one of his close friends had extracted massive kickbacks in the sale of the properties in Jakarta. (ANI)
