IndiaMART.com registers 40 percent growth in recession time

New Delhi, July 9 (ANI/Business Wire India): IndiaMART.com registered an impressive growth of 40 per cent in revenues for 2008-2009 despite an economic downturn. he growth in revenues has also been backed by a robust 52 per cent growth in supplier registrations.

“Our numbers speak for themselves, While the whole world is busy hiding behind words like recession and economic downturn to conceal their poor performance, our teams have strived hard to keep the winning streak going,” said a beaming Dinesh Agarwal, CEO and Founder of IndiaMART.com.

Agarwal feels the steep rise in registrations is clearly indicative of recessionary pressure on entrepreneurs to make do with show string marketing budgets, which naturally pushes them to seek online marketing as the most credible and effective option. As the market leader, IndiaMART is always keen to take on path breaking initiatives to sensitize SMEs about online marketing and adoption of technology through events, trade shows and conferences.

IndiaMART.com has been ranked India’s No. 1 online B2B marketplace by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in its recent study done on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) usage among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The independent market research, with special focus on online B2B marketplaces, accords over 85 per cent preference for IndiaMART among B2B suppliers who go online, and who were interviewed by IAMAI. The study also states a 60 per cent market share for IndiaMART.com in India.

IndiaMART.com received its first round of private equity investment from Intel Capital earlier this year. Bennet Coleman and Co Ltd, publishers of The Times of India and The Economic Times, also have a stake in IndiaMART as a private treaty partner. (ANI)

‘E-mosquito’ to make painful pinpricks history for diabetics

Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): University of Calgary researchers have made a discovery that could change diabetics’ lives forever.

A skin patch, called ‘Electronic Mosquito’, could provide a less-invasive alternative for diabetics who need to take regular samples of their own blood to keep glucose levels in check.

The common method of drawing blood from fingertips and using glucose testing strips and metres can be painful, inconvenient and time-consuming.

Therefore, electrical engineers at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary have patented the device.

The patch is approximately the size of a deck of cards and contains four micro-needles that “bite” sequentially at programmed intervals. The needles are electronically controlled to penetrate the skin deep enough to draw blood from a capillary, but not deep enough to hit a nerve. This means patients would experience little or no pain.

The patch could be worn anywhere on the body where it could obtain accurate readings of capillary blood. A sensor in each cell of the e-Mosquito measures sugar levels in the blood. This data can then be sent wirelessly to a remote device such a computer or a monitoring instrument worn on the wrist. The system could even be connected to an alarm to alert patients or doctors when blood sugar levels enter the danger zone.

“This is a dramatic improvement over manual poking, particularly for children and elderly patients,” says Martin Mintchev, director of the Low Frequency Instrumentation Lab at the Schulich School of Engineering.

“Our approach is radically different and offers a reliable, repeatable solution with the minor inconvenience of wearing something similar to an adhesive bandage,” the expert added.

Mintchev spent three years designing the e-Mosquito along with Karan Kaler, director of the Schulich School’s Bio-Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Laboratory. (ANI)

IBM in talks to buy Sun Micro for $9.55/share – source

International Business Machines Corp is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Inc for $9.55 per share, a person familiar with the situation said on Thursday.

The person was not authorized to speak publicly about the deal.

IBM and Sun Micro may announce deal next week – source

International Business Machines Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc may announce a takeover deal next week, a source with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday, showing IBM may be completing a lengthy review ahead of what would be its biggest acquisition.

The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the deal, said a final price was not set, but IBM may pay Sun around $9 to $10 per share.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported IBM reduced its offer to $9 to $10 per share from a previous $10-to-$11 range.

IBM and Sun officials declined to comment.

A takeover of Sun would give IBM a clear lead in the $45 billion server market against Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc. It would also broaden IBM’s software portfolio, add storage products that compete with EMC Corp and Network Appliance Inc and provide an edge over Cisco Systems Inc, which some see as its biggest rival in the long term.

A deal would have the most impact on IBM’s high-end server business, giving it 65 percent of a market worth some $17 billion, versus 27 percent for HP. It would also bolster IBM’s highly profitable software business and help ensure the survival of much-smaller Sun.

But some analysts say Sun’s lackluster performance could hurt IBM. Sun rose to prominence in the 1990s, but never fully recovered after the dot-com bubble burst earlier this decade, and failed to make much profit from software products like Java and Solaris.

Some analysts also say the deal could spark antitrust scrutiny as customers and suppliers raise concerns about competition.

“Nano-origami” used for making tiny electronic devices

Washington, Feb 28 (ANI): A team of scientists is developing the basic principles of “nano-origami,” a new technique that allows engineers to fold nanoscale materials into simple 3-D structures, which could be used to make tiny electronic devices.

The tiny folded materials could be used as motors and capacitors, potentially leading to better computer memory storage, faster microprocessors and new nanophotonic devices.

The technique, developed by a team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was led by George Barbastathis, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Traditional micro- and nano-fabrication techniques such as X-ray lithography and nano-imprinting work beautifully for two-dimensional structures, and are commonly used to build microprocessors and other micro-electrical-mechanical (MEMS) devices.

However, they cannot create 3-D structures.

“A lot of what’s done now is planar,” said Tony Nichol, a mechanical engineering graduate student working on the project. “We want to take all of the nice tools that have been developed for 2-D and do 3-D things,” he added.

The MIT team uses conventional lithography tools to pattern 2-D materials at the nanoscale, then folds them into predetermined 3-D shapes, opening a new realm of possible applications.

The researchers have already demonstrated a 3-D nanoscale capacitor, developed in collaboration with MIT Professor Yang Shao-Horn, which was presented at the 2005 meeting of the Electrochemical Society.

The current model has only one fold but the more folds that are added, the more energy it will be able to store.

“Extra layers also promote faster information flow, just as the human brain’s many folds allow for quicker communication between brain regions,” said Nader Shaar, a mechanical engineering graduate student working on the project.

Once the material is folded, the tricky part is getting the faces to align properly.

The researchers have developed a few ways to do this successfully: one uses magnets; another involves attaching polymers to a certain spot on the faces and melting them with an electric current, sealing the two faces together.

The researchers are now deep in the development phase of their nano-folded devices, but they are starting to think about how the technology could be used in the future.

“We’ve got the core components figured out, and now we’re just having fun with figuring out some applications,” said Nichol. (ANI)
