Donkeys help five-year-old to “find his voice”

London, Sept 8 (ANI): Donkeys have helped a five-year-old boy suffering from selective mutism – a severe childhood anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations -to “find his voice”.

Edward Wright was diagnosed with selective mutism at the age two.

His mother, Michelle, says she wasn’t worried initially but gradually she could not help noticing his silence.

The Daily Express quoted her as saying: “I was worried…He’d chat at home but if we were in a supermarket or at the doctors he wouldn’t say a word. It was as if he was scared of people he didn’t know hearing his voice.”

“At nursery he’d point to pictures of what he wanted to do each day rather than telling the staff. At first we thought he was just shy,” she added.

Although Edward’s family could not understand his behaviour, his speech therapist said his symptoms showed he was suffering from selective mutism.

Edward’s special coordinater suggested visits to a donkey-riding centre might help.

The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust (EST) For Children And Donkeys is situated on the outskirts of Leeds.

Every week nearly 150 children with disabilities and special needs spend time with the donkeys here.

Michelle explained: “The idea was that the games and activities Edward would do with the donkeys might help him overcome whatever was stopping him talking.”

Edward attended sessions at the centre last September and showed marked improvement in the weeks to follow.

Michelle said: “Gradually he became more confident…after a few weeks he began whispering commands into the donkeys’ ears. Later he would say instructions out loud to stop and start them while riding. It was lovely to see.”

She added: “At school he now talks to friends in the playground and he answers teachers when they ask questions. Every day he has an hour or two of speech therapy which also helps.

“Edward talks about the donkeys a lot, especially his favourite one Eeyore. The donkeys really have helped him find his voice.” (ANI)

Obamas’ condole death of Edward Kennedy

Martha’s Vineyard (Virgina, US), Aug.26 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, on Wednesday condoled the death of former Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy.

Kennedy, the family patriarch, died of complications arising out of brain cancer at his Hyannis Port home on Tuesday. He was 77.

In his statement, Obama said: ” Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I’ve profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.

And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad.

Our hearts and prayers go out to them today-to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family. (ANI)

Holidaying Obama sets himself grueling reading schedule of 2,300 pages

Martha’s Vineyard (Virginia, US), Aug. 26 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has kicked off his vacation by revealing that, in addition to endless games of tennis and golf, he plans to read five books or an astonishing 2,300 pages.

His summer reading list, unveiled by a White House apparently keen to emphasise Obama’s highbrow credentials, contains two heavyweight works of non-fiction and three novels, The Independent reports.

On top of the pile stacked on Barack and Michelle’s bedside table at the 28-acre estate they have rented for 35,000 dollars is “Hot, Flat and Crowded”, the climate change polemic by New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman. Subtitled “why we need a green revolution”, it makes a leftish call to arms regarding the future of the planet.

Obama’s second choice is historian David McCullough’s magisterial biography of John Adams, the often underrated second US president, who was the subject of an award-winning HBO docu-drama last year.

The novels include two crime thrillers: Richard Price’s Lush Life, and The Way Home, a novel by George Pelecanos set in Washington, DC – which, much like Obama’s best-selling autobiography, explores the relationship between a father and his son.

Completing the set is the novel Plainsong, by a little-known writer called Kent Haruf. Set in a small town on the Colorado plains, its existence on the reading list may reassure voters that their metropolitan commander-in-chief has not ignored Middle America.

The books were unveiled to reporters on Monday afternoon, at an official press briefing.

President Obama has already spent a portion of his week so far playing golf, beating Michelle at tennis, and visiting friends.

To finish all five books, he would have to manage more than 300 pages every day – quite an “ask” when a small portion of his time must also be spent running the country. (ANI)

When Rupert Grint met Michelle Obama

Washington, Jun 30 (ANI): Brit actor Rupert Grint has revealed that he was left awestruck after U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama made a secret visit to the set of the latest Harry Potter movie.

Grint, 20, was busy with the shooting of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ earlier this month, when Michelle and her two daughters, Malia, 10, and 8-year-old Sasha arrived on the set.

The actor, who plays Ron Weasley in the wizard series, revealed that he is not easily impressed by famous people, despite working with well-known actors like Sir Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter and Dame Maggie Smith, but he was left in awe of the First Lady.

“I’m not easily impressed by famous people, but nothing’s matched this. I didn’t think I was going to be nervous, then this huge motorcade pulled up at the studio and Michelle stepped out of a black Range Rover and everybody was speechless,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Live magazine.

“It’s hard to imagine (British Prime Minister) Gordon Brown having that kind of effect,” he said.

Michelle revealed that America’s First Family was huge fans of the Harry Potter movies – and that she was more thrilled about visiting the set than she had been about meeting British Royal Queen Elizabeth II.

“We sat around, ate cake and chatted. She said that the President is a big fan of the films and loves the books, and that she’d met the Queen the day before – but visiting the Potter set was far more exciting, that we were a lot cooler,” Grint revealed.

“It was hard to take it all in. I kept thinking, ‘Here I am talking to the First Lady’,” he added. (ANI)

Barack Obama to enjoy date night on Broadway with Michelle in NYC

New York, May 30 (ANI): US President Barack Obama, who makes his first trip to the Big Apple as the commander in chief today, will enjoy a date night on Broadway with First Lady Michelle Obama.

The New York Daily News has learnt that the Obamas plan to take in “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” at the Belasco Theater.

The August Wilson drama chronicles the struggles of African-Americans in the early 20th century.

Instead of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, the First Couple will be travelling on one of the smaller planes in the Air Force VIP fleet.

The White House declined for security reasons to give any specific details about plans surrounding the Obamas’ date in Manhattan beyond simply confirming that they will take in a little New York nightlife.

Obama spokesman Josh Earnest would only say, “The President and First Lady will make a personal visit to New York City.”

The president lived in New York briefly during the 1980s as a student at Columbia and made frequent visits to the city for fundraisers and other political events during the campaign. (ANI)

Older Brits turn to wartime ‘make do and mend’ money-saving tips amid recession

London, May 11 (ANI): About 70 per cent of the older British people have turned to the wartime “make do and mend” money-saving tips that they learnt from their parents or the generation who struggled with rationing, in order that their cash go further amid the ongoing recession.

The Age Concern and Help The Aged poll has found that about 54 per cent of such people buy food at reduced prices, 71 per cent reuse leftover food, half mend clothes, and about 29 per cent grow vegetables.

About a staggering 91 per cent of the older people polled also said that they budgeted carefully and spent within their means.

Michelle Mitchell, charity director of Help the Aged and Age Concern, said that nine out of 10 felt that their frugal attitude could help younger generations weather the credit crunch.

“The set of thrifty skills that many older people can tap into represents an invaluable resource in times of recession,” the Daily Express quoted Michelle as saying. (ANI)

Michelle Obama recycles first-day, First Lady dress for U.S. UN mission talk

New York, May 6 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama has recycled a dress she wore during President Barack Obama’s first day in office, for a meet-and-greet at the U.S. mission to the UN on May 5.

Michelle picked the flowered Tracy Feith frock for the meet, and, in the evening, she changed into city-perfect cocktail attire, a stunning floor-length navy blue gown from high-end French designer Azzedine Alaia.

The gown was layered with a corset from her Chicago favourite, Peter Soronen – to deliver a keynote address at the Time 100 Most Influential People Awards at Time Warner Center.

At the podium, Obama’s voice quivered with emotion as she told the crowd she never imagined she’d be a role model for girls around the globe.

“Girls who possibly look at me and see something more for themselves, more than society expects of them. Girls who now think, maybe just maybe, anything is possible,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“As global leaders, let’s not underestimate the power each of us has to change the world for someone – and let’s not be afraid to try,” she added. (ANI)

Michelle Obama thrilled to visit Sesame Street

Washington, May 6 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama’s was thrilled to visit “Sesame Street” on her first visit to New York since Barack Obama took over as US President.

After a visit to the US Mission to the United Nations, she set aside time for a special stop today at the “Sesame Street”.

“And I was thrilled,” Michelle told employees of the US mission to the United Nations. “I never thought I’d be on Sesame Street with Elmo and Big Bird. … I’m still thrilled. I’m on a high.”

She told the employees that she was on the public-broadcasting show to discuss nutrition and healthy eating. (She did not say when her episode of the show would be broadcast.)

Michelle said with a smile that her meeting with the two Muppet legends was “probably the best thing I’ve done so far in the White House,” The Washington Post reported.

Her agenda at the UN mission, meanwhile, was simply to say thank you to federal employees.

Since becoming first lady, Michelle has visited many federal agencies in Washington-including the Departments of Education, Housing and Urban Development, Interior and Homeland Security-to express gratitude to bureaucrats who often work tirelessly out of the spotlight.

“Many people don’t hear that. Many people don’t feel that the years that they’ve put in sometimes are not appreciated. And my visits are a simple way of saying yes, in fact, we see you, we know who you are, we value what you do,” she said. (ANI)

Bo, the First Dog, loves to chew people’s feet: Michelle Obama

New York, Apr 24 (ANI): The Obamas’ new Portuguese water dog, Bo, can’t get enough of other people’s feet, according to First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michelle spoke about the dog’s foot fetish on April 23, to kids visiting the White House for the annual “Take Your Child To Work Day”.

“Oh, he is a crazy dog,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“You know, he loves to chew on people’s feet,” she said.

The First Lady also revealed that the 6-month-old pooch, which is a gift to First Daughters Malia and Sasha from Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), has been taking up a lot of her time, and keeping her up at night.

“I’ll tell you a story about Bo last night,” she told the kids.

“It was like 10 p.m. at night, everybody was asleep, and we hear all this barking and jumping around, and the President and I came out and we thought somebody was out there. And it was just Bo.

“He was playing with his ball. And it was like there was another person in the house.

“He’s kind of crazy. But he’s still a puppy, so he likes to play a lot,” she added. (ANI)

Obamas made $2.65m in 2008

US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle made $2.65 million in 2008, mostly from royalties of his two best-selling books, the White House said on Wednesday. The Obamas released their tax returns on the April 15 deadline for Americans to file their 2008 income tax documents. The Obamas paid $855,323 in federal income tax.

Trinidad and Tobago to host Americas summit, taxpayers unhappy

Port-of-Spain, April 15 (IANS) Trinidad and Tobago is agog as it hosts the Fifth Summit of the Americas April 17-19 that will bring together 34 leaders, including US President Barack Obama, in this tiny oil-rich nation.

Obama, who is expected to arrive here April 17, will be making his first visit to the Caribbean since he became president.

The world leaders will discuss a host of issues, including climate change, terrorism and poverty.

Taxpayers, however, are not happy with the huge amount of money being spent on the summit.

Minister of Trade and Industry Senator Mariano Browne, who is responsible for the Fifth Summit of Americas, has not revealed the cost for the conference to be held at the city’s waterfront Hyatt Regency hotel.

Earlier estimates put the figure at approximately TT $500 million ($80 million) but that figure has skyrocketed. It is now said to be in the vicinity of TT $1 billion.

A Sunday Guardian poll reveals that 83 percent of those polled felt that the summit was a big waste of money. More than half of the people saw it as merely an ‘eye game’ opportunity for Prime Minister Patrick Manning to walk with US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

The Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions (FITUN) are opposed to the conference. They have been refused permission to stage demonstrations during the summit over the socio-economic conditions in the country.

The security arrangement is unprecedented for Trinidad and Tobago. Several Caribbean countries have chipped in and supplied military personnel.

Some 5,000 specially-trained security personnel are on guard at several hotels and places where the heads of state/government may visit.

Several banks, corporate and business organisations, and foreign missions have announced closure of their offices on the opening day, as employees would not be able to access their workplaces.

Major medical facilities, including the Mt Hope Medical Complex, will be closed or will offer very limited services.

Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has announced that his United National Congress would boycott the conference as there were more serious issues where money could have been spent.

Over 44 percent of the Trinidad and Tobago population of 1.3 million are of Indian origin. Their forefathers came from India’s Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states to work on the sugar and cocoa plantations here between 1845 and 1917.

Oval office is fine, but my bed is no, no: Obama to Bo

Washington, April 15 (IANS) America’s top dog has made it clear to the first dog that he was welcome to visit him in the Oval Office, but the presidential bed in the White House would be out of bounds.

President Barack Obama drew the lines as Bo, the newest – and only four-legged – occupant of the White House, made his much-anticipated Washington debut Tuesday.

For once, about 100 members of the Fourth Estate who had turned out to record the arrival of the first dog at the executive mansion, forgot about the economic crisis or the situation in Pakistan and switched to dog talk.

Will Bo have the privileges of Barney, President George W. Bush’s dog, who was allowed in the Oval Office, asked a scribe.

‘Of course,’ Obama replied.

Will he sleep in a bed?

‘Not in my bed,’ the president said.

The first dog will have some other privileges too. ‘We all have to take turns walking the dog,’ said Obama as he, First Lady Michelle and First Daughters Malia and Sasha – scampered around with Bo on the South Lawn. ‘We ‘re trying to be responsible dog owners,’ he said.

‘I finally got a friend,’ Obama quipped to reporters, one of whom was once bit by Bush’s Barney, though some say not without provocation.

Bo had been a campaign promise to Obama’s daughters which the president revealed to the world on the night of his Nov 4 election victory.

A six-month-old Portuguese water dog, Bo’s arrival ends more than two months of heated speculation that rivalled many of Obama’s more serious policy announcements.

Bo is the first dog owned by the Obamas. Malia has allergies, which limited their choices to hypoallergenic breeds like the Portuguese water dog and the Labradoodle.

traditions.”

Obama and his wife, Michelle, appeared with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, on a balcony overlooking the South Lawn where hundreds of children were scurrying for positions for the egg-rolling competition. Malia and Sasha Obama, the president’s daughters, were also there.

Obama initially could only wave to the crowd, thanks to nonworking microphones. He looked around for help, and finally the sound system started working.

Arrayed beneath the Obamas and Bidens was a large crowd of kids bundled up against the early morning chill.

Obama greeted the crowd, extolling the event as one that “reminds us that this is the people’s house.”

Obama said his job was to introduce the first lady to the crowd _ and Mrs. Obama said that “our goal today is just to have fun. We want to focus on activity, healthy eating … We’ve got Easter Egg decorating, we’ve got basketball, we’ve got soccer … We want everybody to think about moving their bodies.”

Music star Fergie sang the US National Anthem after the president spoke.

The White House allotted tickets for the event to gay and lesbian parents as part of the administration’s effort to reach out to diverse communities.

Sex jobs should be advertised through govt. employment services, says madame

Melbourne, Apr 13 (ANI): A madame of Australia’s biggest escort agency has urged to lift the ban on sex job advertisements, insisting it to be “unfair”.

Michelle, who operates Blondies in Darwin, said that jobs in the sex industry should be advertised through government employment services.

Australian Sex Party convenor Fiona Patten said that escort agencies and brothels “couldn’t even advertise for a cleaner or an accountant” through government offices.

Michelle has asked to revoke the ban, even though she has doubts about luring women into the sex industry.

“As the operator of an escort agency, I agree,” the Northern Territory quoted her as saying.

“But as a mother, I have my doubts,” she added.

She said that “girls” had trouble getting out of the sex business because the money was so good.

“Girls earning 500 dollars a night find it hard to go back to a job paying 500 dollars a week. It’s shocking hours and you have to put up with a lot of crap, but it’s still worth it. We’re here to make money, not friends,” she added. (ANI)

Michelle Obama plants first vegetable, fruit seedlings in White House garden

London, Apr 10 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama planted first fruit and vegetable seedlings in her White House kitchen garden along with a group of elementary school children.

The 1,100-square-foot L-shaped garden includes spinach, assorted types of lettuce, herbs along with dill, oregano and rosemary – onions, shallots, cucumbers, peppers and peas.
The First Lady will be planting tomato vines in about three weeks. She will also be adding blueberries to her kitchen garden “by June”.

Michelle was joined by group of 25 children from Bancroft Elementary School for the inaugural plantings.

A strong advocator of fresh and healthy food, Michelle advised the kids to eat more fruit and vegetables.

“It does have nutrients, it does make you strong, it is all brain food,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She said the garden was also “real inexpensive”, costing no more than 200 dollars, and would yield “a ton of stuff.”

“We can produce enough fruits and vegetables to feed us for years and years to come, for just a couple of hundred dollars,” she said. (ANI)

Facebook may help catch cheating boyfriends

London, April 8 (ANI): Facebooking may be a great way to meet strangers but it could also give you the shock of your life. That’s what happened with Michelle Westby, 21, when she looked at a stranger’s photos on Facebook only to find her own boyfriend cheating.

The receptionist and part-time model had clicked on fellow model Toni Colville’s album to get ideas for her fashion poses, reports the Sun.

She then decided to take a peek at Toni’s holiday photos and discovered images of her cuddling Jason Jennings-Brown, 23, who Michelle had been dating for six months.

Through the social networking site, Michelle got to know that the love rat had been two-timing her with unsuspecting Toni, 21.

And Michelle, from Stevenage, Herts, fears he may have duped other women.

She said: “Toni had some great pictures. Scrolling through them I saw she had an album entitled ‘Holiday in Egypt’, which I opened. I admit looking at the personal pictures was sheer nosiness, but what else is Facebook for?

“Clicking through them my hand suddenly froze over the mouse. Staring back was my boyfriend, Jason, with his arms around this pretty stranger.

She added: “I felt sick and couldn’t believe it. What are the chances of looking at a total stranger’s pictures and seeing your boyfriend cheating in them?” (ANI)
