Chinese man munches on 1500 ‘crispy, delicious’ lightbulbs!

Melbourne, May 4 (ANI): A middle-aged man claims to have eaten 1500 light bulbs over his life after developing a liking for their crispness.

Metro newspaper in the UK reports that Wang Xianjun, 54, of Sichuan Province, started to snack on broken glass because he says it is “crispy and delicious.”

“I accidentally swallowed a piece of thick fish bone, but nothing happened. With curiosity, I tried several pieces of broken glasses secretly and nothing happened also,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“I am not eating it every day, but from time to time. I only eat the light bulb during my breakfast, and each day no more than one bulb,” he said.

Wang first smashes the light bulb before swallowing it piece by piece, sipping from a glass of water. (ANI)

Metro Pacific shareholder in $107 mln share sale

HONG KONG, April 14 (Reuters) – A shareholder of Philippine conglomerate Metro Pacific Investment Corporation (MPI.PS) is selling up to $107 million worth of shares in the firm, including an upsize option, according to a term sheet obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

The shareholder, the beneficial trust fund of Phillippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT), is selling 1.1 billion shares at 3 Philippine pesos each, a discount of 3.2 percent to the closing price on Wednesday, with an upsize option to issue up to 500 million additional shares, the term sheet said.

With the full upsize option the issue would represent 7.95 percent of Metro’s issued capital, the term sheet said.

CLSA is handling the share placement.

Metro Pacific is a unit of Hong Kong’s First Pacific Co (0142.HK), a key shareholder of PLDT.

Metro train derails in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep.13 (ANI): A Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) coach on the Indraprashta-Yamuna Nagar line derailed early on Sunday morning.

Though the cause of the 6 a.m.derailment was not immediately known, several routes along the metro line were disrupted. o casualties were reported.

Earlier, a DMRC train going towards Yamuna Bank from Dwarka Sector 9 developed a break problem in the middle of its journey which led to a delay of 15 minutes, DMRC sources said.

Passengers, however, complained that the trains were delayed for upto 30 minutes. (ANI)

DGCA directs all domestic airlines to charge tariff at last week’s levels

New Delhi, Sep 11 (ANI): The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has written to the CMDs/CEOs of all scheduled airlines to charge air travellers tariff at a level prevalent in the week ending September 6.

In the letter, the DGCA said it was aware of domestic airlines charging tariff almost three to four times higher on various metro routes as compared to those prevalent in the week ending September 6.

It is further noted by the DGCA that the cost of operation of scheduled airlines on account of various constituent elements have not undergone any significant change in the last week to merit a fare hike.

The DGCA warned that any violation of these directives would be dealt with under the appropriate law. (ANI)

K. H. Muniyappa to attend flagging off ceremony of Standard Gauge Metro Car

Bangalore, Sep. 9 (ANI): The Minister of State for Railways, K. H. Muniyappa, will attend a programme here on Friday where country’s first Standard Gauge Metro Car will be flagged off.

Standard Gauge Metro Car is being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence.

The Minister of State of Defence, Dr. Pallam Raju will also be present on the occasion.

Later, both the Ministers will travel to Kolar where they will hold meetings with various employees Unions/Associations of BEML at KGF Complex.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for employees of BEML to put forth their grievances and pending issues before the Ministers. (ANI)

Malay vet extends service to pet owner by groping, sucking her breasts

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 9 (ANI): A Malay kindergarten teacher, who took her feverish pet squirrel to a veterinary clinic for treatment, had her breasts groped instead by the attending veterinarian.

According to the Harian Metro, the veterinarian had asked the 27-year old woman to place the squirrel inside her blouse to keep it warm, given its “erratic body temperature”.

But the squirrel got stuck on her bra strap, when the 52-year-old veterinarian asked her to take the animal out.

While helping the woman remove the squirrel, the veterinarian saw her breasts, started praising her figure, and allegedly told her to take care of her body and “beautiful breasts”.

Ampang OCPD Asst Comm Abd Jalil Hasan said that the veterinarian later began to demonstrate to her how to massage her breasts.

“He then took advantage by groping and sucking the victim’s breasts. The victim struggled to release herself before the doctor finally let her go,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

“He told her she need not pay for the squirrel’s treatment and asked her to come again. But she decided to lodge a police report,” he added.

ACP Abd Jalil Hasan added that the veterinarian was arrested on September 7.

However, the squirrel died shortly after returning home. (ANI)

Mizo artist sets up first ever fine art school

Aizwal, Aug 28 (ANI): Laltanpuia, a promising painter who started the first fine arts school in Mizoram, is encouraging the youth to take to innovative ways to earn a living.

Laltanpuia, for whom painting was just a hobby, has now turned it into a mission to fight social problems like militancy, drugs and poverty in the northeast. is art not only pleases the eyes but also conveys an important message about culture, life and most of all peace.

With the objective of tapping the hidden talent among the youth, Laltanpuia started the first fine arts school in Mizoram after the completion of a Diploma in Fine Arts from Mumbai.

“As there is no art college here so I had to pursue my Diploma in Art outside of the state. After completion of my course, I returned and set up this school of fine arts so that people need not go out to learn about art. Art can attract the youth towards constructive activities. I think the educated youth can be self-employed by taking to painting and there is a good demand for paintings in metro cities and foreign markets,” said Laltanpuia.

Laltanpuia, who believes that art can play a role in developing aesthetic values among the people of Mizoram, encountered many hardships on his journey.

One of them was the absence of an art school or guidance centre in the state.

Keeping this in mind, he started the art centre, which is now molding lives of many budding artists.

“It’s a good profession. We can make good money and since it is my hobby, I can pursue my hobby as a profession,” said Lalchangchua.

Today, several educated Mizo youth have joined the centre and are learning fine art. Some even plan to further develop their skills after getting trained in painting and usage of colour.

“Art is a good scope for earning money through your works. You can also make a name for yourself through art. And government jobs are all very common here, so it’s a different way,” said Lisa Lalsanswani, a trainee.

World’s tallest building seems to be recession-proof too

Dubai, Aug. 25 (ANI): Despite the worst recession in modern history, the world’s tallest tower, Burj Dubai, continues to retain its reputation as one of the most expensive addresses in Dubai, according to Middle East property experts.

Apartment prices in the tower are stabilising, experts say, with a two-bedroom apartment on the 57th floor available for one million pounds, Sky News reports.

In contrast, the market is showing less signs of recovery elsewhere in the Emirate.

“This is something we have noticed. As the world has had its financial problems some countries have gone into recession. But this is one area where a lot of the development dreams have actually been realised,” the report quoted Andrew Chambers, MD of Asteco, a UAE-based property consultancy, as saying.

“What we are finding is that, while prices have been dropping everywhere across the Middle East, Downtown Burj Dubai is one area where they are still consistently higher than they are in a lot of other areas,” he added.

In what has been dubbed “the Burj effect”, the neighbouring property in the Downtown Burj Dubai district is also benefiting from being close to the record-breaking skyscraper.

“The Burj effect is that people are living here, they can commute around here, they see the metro about to open here, and so they have got restaurants, they have got the hotels, they have got all the facilities that they have always been promised.

“I think this has given hope to other areas. It will help this city and I think the Emirates all over”, Chambers was quoted in the report, as saying.

But not all market observers share Chamber’s optimism.

Matthew Green, head of research and consultancy CB Richard Ellis (UAE), thinks the Burj Dubai offers a unique prospect that other Dubai addresses cannot match.

“For the Burj Dubai and the surrounding area, everything is based on the opening of the tallest tower towards the end of the year.

“It will be the tallest tower in the world for years to come and that is really making it a bit different within the current market. Exclusive post codes are not recession proof but it seems investors in the world’s highest tower can afford to stand a little taller than most”, the report quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Ground-to-air security ahead of Independence Day

New Delhi/Guwahati, Aug 13 (ANI): With India getting set to celebrate its 62nd Independence Day, the Central and Delhi State Governments have pulled out all steps to ensure that the event is santizied from a security point of view.

Following intelligence inputs that terror outfits have plans to target the Indian capital on August 15, over 60,000 officers of the Delhi Police, Special Cell, Crime Branch, Special Branch and around 35 paramilitary companies will be deployed in and around the city.

It is expected that around 6,000 police officers will be deployed near Red Fort.

Forty CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the Red Fort, while sharpshooters of the National Security Guard (NSG) will man buildings and rooftops near the historic monument.

Intelligence agencies have also reportedly identified ‘safety houses’ where the Prime Minister and other VIPs can be taken in the event of a terror strike.

Quick Reaction Teams, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Vajra (of the Rapid Action Force) are also being deployed for the ocassion.

Informers have been deployed to look out for suspect anti-national elements, police sources said.

The entire area over Red Fort will be declared a no-fly zone during the function. Airspace would be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Security has been tightened at the Parliament complex, IGI Airport, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and Metro stations.

In other sensitive parts of the country like Jammu and Kashmir, and the northeastern states, security has been beefed up to counter possible terror or insurgent attacks.

In Guwahati, passengers are expected to be frisked at various checkpoints in the city.

Meanwhile, defying the boycott call, school students, NCC cadets and police personnel are busy preparing for the Independence Day parade.

“They are always giving calls to boycott Republic Day celebrations or Independence Day celebrations. But it is regularly celebrating Independence Day,” said Anna Rai,a school teacher.

The students are also upbeat about participating in the parade.

Security has also been beefed up along the India-Bangladesh border in Siliguri.

The Border Security Force (BSF) is on a high alert and keeping a strict vigil along the borders.

Home Ministry officials have warned that the Lashkar-e-Taiba plans to target three major cities, including Delhi on Independence Day.

Kolkata and Hyderabad are the other two LeT targets. (ANI)

DMRC sacks official for negligence in bridge collapse case

New Delhi, July 15 (ANI): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has sacked official in-charge of the Badarpur Metro line, Vijay Anand, for neglecting his duty, following shocking collapse of an under construction Metro pillar in south Delhi.

Six persons were killed and 15 others injured when an under-construction bridge of the Delhi Metro collapsed on Sunday.

The collapse had prompted DMRC chief E Sreedharan to resign owing the moral responsibility for the worst mishap involving the modern transport system.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna had rejected Sreedharan’s resignation, saying the city needed the man to continue his work.

The accident took place at around 5 am when a pillar of the bridge gave in during some construction work near Lady Sriram College in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar.

Four labourers and a 28-year-old engineer of Gammon India, the contractor of the project, were killed in the mishap, the second such incident in nine months.

DMRC set up a four-member committee to examine reasons for the accident and it would submit its report in 10 days. (ANI)

Clearance operation continues at Delhi Metro mishap site

New Delhi, July 14 (ANI): Debris clearance operations continued at the Delhi Metro accident site in South Delhi on Tuesday.

Cranes, which toppled yesterday leaving six injured, have been removed from the site.

Vehicular movement towards Nehru Place area has been badly affected with traffic chaos in many places like Greater Kailash, Amar Colony, Moolchand and East of Kailash.

Commuters in the area had some respite this morning as one-way traffic was opened on the Moolchand-Zamrudpur-Nehru Place route.

Water supply has been affected after the under-construction bridge fell on a pipeline. Power supply has also been temporarily snapped.

The Delhi Government has set up a committee to be headed by A.K.Nagpal of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to investigate Sunday’s mishap in which six persons were killed after an under-construction bridge collapsed. (ANI)

Delhi Metro chief Sreedharan withdraws resignation

New Delhi, July 13 (ANI): A day after he put his papers owning moral responsibility for an accident at a construction site that killed six people, Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan has withdrew his resignation.

“E Sreedharan has decided to withdraw his resignation in view of the letter he received from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit (asking him to continue as the DMRC Managing Director),” Metro Rail spokesperson Anuj Dayal told reporters at New Delhi on Monday.

Dayal said the Metro chief also took into consideration the persuasion of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna and Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy who asked him to withdraw his resignation letter and continue in the post.

The 77-year-old renowned technocrat quit his post within hours of the accident at the Metro construction site in south Delhi’s Jamrudpur area on Sunday where an under construction bridge collapsed killing six people and injuring 15 others.

On Sunday night, Dikshit had rejected his resignation saying that the Delhi Metro and the country needed his services.

“We respect his sentiments. But we also know that the Delhi Metro and the country need him. Not only he do good work for Delhi but also for the country,” she had said.

Highly placed sources said the government rejected Sreedharan’s resignation as it viewed that his continuation was necessary for successful completion of Metro projects ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year. (ANI)

Chihuahua survives 900kg stomp on head by horse!

Melbourne, July 2 (ANI): A chihuahua survived an accidental 900kg stomp on its head, made by its buddy horse weighing about 900kg.

Little Berry was suspected to have been almost squashed flat when Leroy, a Clydesdale, stepped backwards on to her head.

Owner Abbey Newton, 24, feared the dog was dead and took her to a vet, who gave it 24 hours to live and suggested she be put down.

But Abbey took her back home, and to the caretaker’s much surprise, Berry was her usual self by the morning.

“She just got up and ate my other dog’s breakfast,” the Daily Tetelgraph quoted Abbey as having told the Metro newspaper. (ANI)

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): The Centre is preparing to provide modern facilities in 28 more cities in addition to the existing 65 cities under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the first 100 days of the UPA government.

“Infrastructure will also be developed in small and medium towns. In order to lessen pressure on large cities the government will launch the scheme for satellite town around mega cities to address basic infrastructure problems such as drinking water , sewerage, drainage and solid waste management. To provide better transport facilities in the growing urban areas, the government will provide all assistance to metro project in Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Delhi,” Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said on Monday in the national capital.

Besides, the government will also make substantial assistance for the purchase of fifteen thousand 220-Modern Buses for city transport in 118 cities along with 61 mission cities.

Reddy informed that he has requested the Finance Ministry for removal of excise tax on buses made for public transport services. He said states will also be persuaded to waive local taxes on buses made for public transport.

To address the urban infrastructure deficit in north-eastern region , the Asian Development Bank – assisted North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme will be launched for implementation at a cost of about 1,371 crore rupees.

Five cities of Agartala, Aizawl, Gangtok, Kohima and Shillong will be taken up in the first phase. States of Arunachal Pradesh Assam and Manipur will be taken up next year.

To meet the acute shortage of houses for urban poor, economically weaker sections and lower income groups of city of Delhi, construction of about 65 thousand houses in different income groups will be taken up. In addition to this about 10 thousand houses will be taken up in phases. (ANI)

Car theft syndicates employing sexy girls to steal amorous men’s cars

Kuala Lumpur, Jun 24 (ANI): Sexy women are helping car theft syndicates steal amorous businessmen’s luxury vehicles, says a report.

According to the Harian Metro, during the past six months, about 10 businessmen have lost their cars after being seduced by these women.

The women persuade their victims to lend them their expensive cars, and then deliver the vehicles to the syndicates.

The crime would usually go unreported by the victim, who fears for his image or family life.

But the ploy came to light when one of the victims, businessman Ramli Che Mat, 36, reported his car stolen after he lent it to a friend.

Ramli said that he had lent his Toyota Caldina to his friend in January with the intention of selling it to him.

“Without telling me, he let his ‘girlfriend’ use it,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

Ramli was alerted when the bank called to inform him about missing the hire-purchase payment for two months, and he immediately asked his friend about the car.

Both of them then visited the woman at her Setapak home, but she claimed the bank had repossessed the car.

However, a call to the bank revealed that there was no order for the vehicle to be repossessed, said Ramli.

He and his friend then went to confront the woman again, but found that she had disappeared. She did not answer her mobile phone either.

“However, she did send an SMS that sounded like a challenge to us to lodge a police report,” he said.

Subang Jaya police chief ACP Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar confirmed that a report had been lodged on the matter. (ANI)

Manipur has an apparel-manufacturing centre

Imphal, May 29 (ANI): A centre for apparel manufacturing has been set up in Imphal in a first of its kind initiative in the northeastern region. It has come as a boon for educated unemployed youth of the State.

Many Manipuri youngsters have joined Skills for Employment in Apparel Manufacturing (or SEAM) centre.

Set up at Nongmeibung in Imphal East District, SEAM is sponsored by Ministry of Rural Development and Department of Education, Government of Manipur with Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL and FS) Cluster Multi Skills Development Centre.

“Definitely it is going to enhance the local economy. First, by providing local people and dropout students with employment opportunities. Secondly, we are trying to start a production unit in Manipur. Once that comes up, they can start working in Manipur itself,” said Manoj Kumar Sinha, Advisor to the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services centre.

“After they finish their training here, they will go to Bangalore and Chennai for three months to work as an apprentice and will get a stipend of 3,000 rupees. After that they can start working on their own,” said Md. Kodus Khan, the Nodal Officer. he training programme would last for a month and after that, arrangement for placement would be made outside the State and in metro cities.

Apart from weaving classes, the trainees also have classes on personality and language development.

The people of the State have responded enthusiastically and have appreciated the government’s effort.

“This is a very good initiative taken by the government for the employed educated youth of the state. We can now get an opportunity to learn and make a living for ourselves,” said Laishram Reena, a trainee.

“I’ve joined with the hope that after I get this training, I will be able to help my parents. I can work and with the salary I get. I can support my family,” said Giya, a trainee.

Unemployed youth, who have studied till grade eight, are eligible to apply for the training programme, which is free of cost.

Unemployment is one of the biggest problems in the Manipur and schemes like SEAM help address it to some extent. By L.C.K.Singh (ANI)

US man sues Guinness Book for naming him world’s most litigious man!

New York, May 28 (ANI): A Kentucky man who keeps suing people is suing the Guinness Book of World Records for naming him the world’s most litigious man.

It is believed that Riches has filed over 4,000 lawsuits around the world, reports Britain’s Metro newspaper, against people and entities as varied as George W. Bush, Britney Spears, the Eiffel Tower and the Roman Empire.

Now, after learning that Guinness Book plans to name him as the most lawsuit-happy man in its 2010 edition, he targeted it, reports The New York Daily News.

“The Guinness Book of World Records have no right to publish my work, my legal masterpieces,” says Riches’ latest lawsuit, according to The Spokesman-Review.

He is also unhappy about the nicknames they apparently plan to ascribe to him, including ‘Sue-per-man’, ‘the duke of lawsuits’ and ‘Johnny Sue-nami’. (ANI)

‘Cyclone Aila’ claims 35 lives in West Bengal, Kolkata limps back to normal

Kolkata, May 26 (ANI): West Bengal capital Kolkata is limping back to normal a day after ‘Cyclone Aila’ brushed past it at a distance of 50 km.

The size of the cyclonic system was so large – with a maximum diameter of 250-350 km – that when the core crossed the coast, the city was already reeling from its impact with wind speeds of 120 kmph.

At least 35 people have been killed across the state, 15 of them in Kolkata and Howrah and 20 others in South Bengal districts. Over 1500 trees lie uprooted across the main thoroughfares in the city, several electric poles have keeled over, electricity, water supply and cable connections have been disrupted in several pockets across the metropolis.

Office goers, however, are making efforts to go to work even as the public transport system is crawling back to normalcy.

The main problem is the blocked roads. Uprooted trees are being cut and cleared at a snail’s pace by corporation staff who have not responded adequately to the crisis. Only about 75 civic personnel have been at work since yesterday evening with just 26 axes, 30 machetes and just one gas cutter, trying to clear away the over 1000 uprooted trees.

The storm which started around 1.30 p.m. Monday and lasted till 8.30 p.m., with a couple of hours lull around 3 p.m., rendered Kolkata immobile. Roads were blocked, public transport collapsed, all to and fro flights were cancelled and even the dependable metro crashed.

The last cyclone, the Great Calcutta Cyclone, wrecked the city on October 5, 1864. About 60,000 people were killed then. By Ajitha Menon (ANI)
