Mercury tops 50C, 22 die as US swelters under heatwave

WASHINGTON: A heatwave and stifling humidity battered the central and eastern United States on Thursday, leaving residents searching for the coolest oasis to fend off record temperatures that have left over 20 dead.
“The dangerous heatwave continues across much of the central and eastern US, with excessive heat and humidity expected to expand into the Ohio Valley and East Coast states for the remainder of the week,” the National Weather Service (NWS) said on its website. The New York Times reported that across the country the deaths of 22 people had been attributed to heatwave, which has left some 17 states

from Texas to Michigan battling temperatures over 100 F (37Celsius).
The weather service has issued excessive heat warnings for those states saying there is a “large ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere… keeping hot temperatures in place.” Weather experts predicted that heat index values across parts of the Midwest, Ohio and mid-Atlantic could reach between 40 and 46C through Friday.
A heat index of 51 C was registered in Iowa, in the central US. In Maryland, near the US capital, weather services reported temperatures of 42 C. On the East Coast, humidity was assaulting Washington.

Heat wave continues unabated in North India

New Delhi/ Ahmedabad, May 15 (ANI): Various parts of the Country continue to reel under intense heat wave following the mercury shooting beyond the normal temperatures as on Saturday.

With the mercury hovering above the 45-degrees Celsius mark, tourists visiting New Delhi are having a tough time in the sizzling heat.

“Delhi is hotter than Patna but as we have come here to spend our vacation, we have to go out to enjoy the place…we have been carrying water and other liquid items so that we can give it to the children at regular intervals,” said Shaheen, a tourist from Patna.
Meanwhile, at Ahmedabad, locals were seen moving around with their faces covered to avoid the heat.

Ahmedabad saw a sharp rise in the maximum temperature and reportedly it was beyond 45 degrees mark.

“The weather is too hot. Earlier I used to leave for my office at around 10.30 in the morning but now I have started reaching office at around 9.30 so that I can avoid the extreme heat,” said Avinashbhai, a resident.

As per media reports, at least 30 persons have succumbed to heat across the country this year.

Temperatures usually go up to mid-forties at many places in northern India.

Usually, till the onset of the monsoon, the months of May-June are the hottest in the country with the temperatures hovering in the range of 40 to 45 degrees Celsius in several regions.

However, this year, the people were startled at the mercury shooting beyond the 40 degrees mark in the month of April itself. (ANI)

Whale eaters have more mercury

Shingu, May 11 — Residents of a whaling town in Japan have been found to have concentrations of methylmercury in their hair four times or more than the average of 14 other regions in the country where cetaceans are rarely consumed, the town office based on a survey said.

The finding was based on a survey last summer using hair samples from 1,017 residents of Taiji, which were tested for methylmercury concentration. No health effects from the high concentrations were detected.

Magistrate allows Orissa labourers to work in cooler climes

Bargarh (Orissa), May 11 (ANI): With the mercury rising above 45-degree mark, the labourers in Orissa”s Bargarh District have been allowed to work in cooler temperatures.

“We have made arrangements for drinking water in the buses, if they ply after 10 or 11 a.m. The labourers have also been instructed to work till 11:30 am and after 3:30 pm. We are also putting this in the cinema halls through advertisements,” said Bandhu Bilhor, Additional District Magistrate.

Despite rainfall in other parts of the state, high temperature has affected normal life in Bargarh and the adjoining districts.

The district administration has made arrangement for providing drinking water to the commuters.

People venturing outdoors cover their faces with scarves, use sunscreen lotions and carry umbrellas.

“This year Bargarh recorded the maximum temperature, Earlier the temperature used to be comparatively low. From 9 am to 7 in the evening, the temperature remains high due to which we are unable to go to the market,” said Kanak Choudhary, a local.

At least 30 people have reportedly succumbed to heat across the country this year. (ANI)

Tourists flock to Kufri to beat the heat

Shimla, May 3 (ANI): As the mercury rises across northern India, Kufri in Shimla is attracting lots of tourists.

The climate of Kufri is providing much-needed relief to many tourists who leave behind temperatures in mid to high 40s.

“I am from Ahmedabad, the temperature is 47 degree Celsius and here the temperature is very low and here we are enjoying the low temperature and the beauty of hills. The weather is very nice here,” said Prateek, a tourist.

Locals involved in the tourism business say that this tourist rush indicates a good season for them this summer.

“As the summer is going up, tourists are rushing to Kufri. We are having a good business these days. As the mercury will rise in May and June, this rush will increase more. This is good for the hundreds of local youth involved in horse-riding business here,” said Shiv Singh, who arranges horse-riding trips for tourists.

From Shimla and Kufri, tourists also move to other tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, like Manali and Dalhousie.

The maximum temperature in most hill-stations of Himachal Pradesh varies from 24 to 27 degree Celsius. (ANI)

Rajasthan gets ready for summer, with cooling items

Jaipur, Mar. 31 (ANI): The manufacturers of cooling items like air conditioners, refrigerators and coolers are expecting to do a brisk business as the mercury begins to rise in Rajasthan.

This year, the heat wave has reached the northern India about a month ahead of schedule.

It is estimated that the sale of cooling items would see a rise of thirty five percent in comparison to last year.

“If you see, Rajasthan is a hot region and if you look at the market this time market of air-condition has increased 20 to 25 percent alone compared to last year and if you see the customer they are buying window ac”s and split ac”s because of such hot weather,” said Piyush Kumar, Assistant Manager, Panasonic, Rajasthan.

“And now there are different qualities, every company has different quality products and it depends on the budget of the customer what product they want to buy,” he added.

Companies are also coming up with new models to attract more customers.

“But obviously because of hot weather in Rajasthan, there is a good effect on air conditions and refrigerators and sale is also improving day by day. And also recently company has launched some new models in the market and we are expecting good business,” said Sudhanshu Jain, Area manager, Samsung India, Rajasthan.

Rajasthan has a market of 100 million rupees for such items, and out of this, 50 million is for air conditioners alone. (ANI)

Fishers air mercury worries

Commercial fishers on Western Australia’s south coast have expressed concerns about the adequacy of measures designed to prevent elevated mercury levels after dredging in Albany’s King George Sound.

Mercury levels above the guidelines for ecosystem health have been found in a layer of sediment in the sound.

Albany purse seine fisherman Peter Westerberg says he is worried mercury will build-up in the food chain and affect sardine stocks.

Mr Westerberg says he is not sure he trusts assurances that contaminants will not spread.

“It’s a bit of the unknown, you see what’s happening in Fremantle. They keep telling you there’s a little plume, but all of a sudden the plume’s far bigger than anticipated, so if the dredging goes ahead and takes up most of King George Sound, well there goes sardine fishing for seven, eight, nine, 10 months,” he said.

Miracle cat survives 3800km trek!

Melbourne, Sept 14 (ANI): Clyde, the cat, has miraculously survived a trek over 3800km in three years.

The cat was found in the Cloncurry Hospital, in outback Queensland, four months ago, where a nurse took him to local vet.

The vet scanned the animal for a microchip that led them all the way back to his owners in Tasmania.

Katrina Phillips told The Mercury she burst into tears after she came to know that Clyde was alive and well.

“We just can’t believe he’s alive, it’s just unbelievable and it’s so emotional,” The Herald Sun quoted Phillips as saying.

“I bought him as a birthday present for my daughter Ashleigh and one day, about three years ago, he just disappeared.

“We did everything to try to find him. We door-knocked, did letterbox drops and advertised in the paper, but there was no trace of him,” she added. (ANI)

Rapper Speech Debelle wins UK’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize

London, Sept 9 (ANI): Rapper Speech Debelle emerged as the dark horse to win the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize at the award ceremony held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on September 8.

Debelle’s album Speech Therapy has only sold 3,000 copies, which makes it the lowest selling album ever to have won the prize.

However, the 26-year-old was confident of winning the award and expressed no surprises.

“I should have won it because my album was the best album of the year. This is pure niceness,” The Sun quoted her, as saying.

As the rapper set out to party and celebrate her 20,000-pound prize, she said: “I’m not going to know where I live later on.”

The Barclaycard Mercury Prize is a annual prize given for the best album of the year from the UK or Ireland. (ANI)

Oz desert town soon to have an ice skating rink

Melbourne, August 26 (ANI): While the mercury will be topping 40 degrees during the school holidays, kids in a desert town in Australia will be seen wrapping on a scarf and a thick pair of socks, for there are plans to make an ice skating rink for them.

Northern Territory (NT) Sport and Recreation Minister Karl Hampton has announced 60,000 dollars to help transport and install the 30 by 15 metres rink in Alice Springs.

“(It’ll) be a first for the town,” news.com.au quoted the Minister as saying.

Although the trial venture has been designed with sweating locals in mind, people associated with the tourism industry hope that travellers visiting Alice may also get in on the action.

“I think you would be beating them off with a stick,” Peter Grigg, the General Manager of Tourism Central Australia told ABC radio in Alice Springs.

“Over that Christmas period there are some people that head south or east or north or west to spend Christmas with family.

“What a great opportunity now to actually invite your family to Alice Springs and say, ‘Don’t worry about the heat, don’t worry about the kids, we’ll take ‘em down the skating rink,’” Grigg added.

Considering that the project may provide students with a constructive way of spending their time off school, the Alice Springs Town Council has also dedicated 10,000 dollars to it.

The rink will be open for six weeks during the summer months, including the school holidays.

Hampton hopes that the youth of Alice Springs would be able to make maximum use of it.

The Convention Centre, which normally shuts from December to February, is also expected to support many jobs, says Hampton.

“The ice-skating rink will provide a location for Territory families to have fun together in a secure and safe environment with on-site security,” he said. (ANI)

Natural organic matter plays key role in making mercury toxic to living creatures

Washington, August 19 (ANI): Scientists have found that naturally occurring organic matter in water and sediment appears to play a key role in helping microbes convert tiny particles of mercury in the environment into a form that is toxic to most living creatures.

According to Duke University environmental engineers, this finding is important because it could change the way mercury in the environment is measured and therefore regulated.

This particularly harmful form of the element, known as methylmercury, is a potent toxin for nerve cells. When ingested by organisms, it is not excreted and builds up in tissues or organs.

In a series of laboratory experiments, Amrika Deonarine, a graduate student in civil and environmental engineering at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering, found that organic matter and chemical compounds containing sulfur – known as sulfides – can readily bind to form mercury sulfide nanoparticles.

Since they are more soluble than larger particles, these nanoparticles may be the precursors to a process known as methylation.

“When the organic material combines with the mercury, it prevents the particle from accumulating with other mercury particles and growing larger,” said Deonarine.

“Since the mercury remains in a nanoparticle size, it can easily collect on the surface of microbes where any mercury that dissolves can be taken in by the microbes,” she said.

“Without the organic matter, the mercury sulfide nanoparticles would grow too large and become insoluble, thus reducing the availability of mercury for microbial methylation,” she added.

It is while inside the microbe that the mercury is converted into the harmful methylmercury form, according to the researchers.

These reactions can only take place in cold water environments with little to no oxygen, such as the zone of sediment just below the bottom of a body of water.

Other such anaerobic environments can also be found in waste water and sewage treatment systems, the researchers said.

Mercury is extremely toxic and can lead to kidney dysfunctions, neurological disorders and even death. In particular, fetuses exposed to methylmercury can suffer from these same disorders as well as impaired learning abilities.

There are many ways mercury gets into the environment, with the primary sources being the combustion of coal, the refining of such metals as gold and other non-ferrous metals, and in the gases released during volcanic eruptions. (ANI)

Component of vegetable protein linked to lower BP

Washington, July 7 (ANI): A new study has shown that consuming an amino acid commonly found in vegetable protein is associated with lower blood pressure.

The study, conducted by Jeremiah Stamler, M.D., lead author of the study, and colleagues, showed that a 4.72 percent higher dietary intake of the amino acid glutamic acid as a percent of total dietary protein correlated with lower group average systolic blood pressure, lower by 1.5 to 3.0 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Group average diastolic blood pressure was lower by 1.0 to 1.6 mm Hg.

In the study, researchers examined dietary amino acids, the building blocks of protein.

Stamler, professor emeritus of the Department of Preventive Medicine in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill, said that glutamic acid is the most common amino acid and accounts for almost a quarter (23 percent) of the protein in vegetable protein and almost one fifth (18 percent) of animal protein.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from 4,680 middle-age people participating in an international population study on the effects of dietary nutrients on high blood pressure. Participants were from the U.S., U.K., China, and Japan.

The results showed that a nearly 5 percent higher intake of glutamic acid as a percent of total protein in the diet was linked to lower average blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure was lower by an average of 1.5 to 3.0 points and diastolic blood pressure was lower by 1.0 to 1.6 points.

Stamler said that the study might help explain on a molecular level why the Dieatary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet lowers blood pressure.

The DASH eating pattern, developed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, is rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat and nonfat dairy products as well as whole grains, lean poultry, nuts and beans.

The study has been published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. (ANI)

Women’s basketball player for Phoenix Mercury, Diana Taurasi,27,has been cited for driving under the influence of alcohol. It’s no secret that Phoenix G Diana Taurasi drinks.

Taurasi was asked to give a blood sample to test for her alcohol content.

Phoenix Mercury won over the Seattle Storm on July 1, 2009.

Yet expects her leading scorer (21.2) to play on Sunday in Los Angeles.

It’s no secret that Phoenix G Diana Taurasi drinks. She’ll readily talk about vodka and wine in lighter off-court moments. But it appears she went too far following the big win against Seattle on Wednesday.

Taurasi, 27, was cited for drunken driving. Phoenix GM Ann Meyers-Drysdale wouldn’t comment to local reporters until more information was made available, yet expects her leading scorer (21.2) to play on Sunday in Los Angeles.

How is this right? Detroit C Kara Braxton was suspended six games this season for her second DUI offense and two for her first. Given that Taurasi (pictured right) is an important face of the league with milk commercials and leading the All-Star game vote, shouldn’t she be punished to show this type of behavior is unacceptable? At the very least, Taurasi should be held out of the game until all information is revealed concerning her DUI citation to show the organization is taking this seriously.

Now, printable batteries that can be integrated into ATM cards, greeting cards

Washington, July 3 (ANI): Have problems remembering that TAN number while doing online transactions? Well, your ATM card could soon tell the code just with a simple touch, all thanks to newly developed printable batteries that could easily be fitted into bankcards.

Developed by a research team led by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Baumann of the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS in Chemnitz, the printable battery can be produced cost-effectively on a large scale.

“Our goal is to be able to mass produce the batteries at a price of single digit cent range each,” said Dr. Andreas Willert, group manager at ENAS.

The characteristics of the battery differ significantly from those of conventional batteries.

The printable version weighs less than one gram on the scales, is not even one millimetre thick, and can therefore be easily integrated into bankcards.

The battery does not contain mercury and is thus environmentally friendly.

Its voltage is 1.5 V, which lies within the normal range, thus by placing several batteries in a row, voltages of 3 V, 4.5 V and 6 V can also be achieved.

The new type of battery is composed of different layers: a zinc anode and a manganese cathode, among others.

Zinc and manganese react with one another and produce electricity, but the anode and the cathode layer dissipate gradually during this chemical process. Therefore, the battery is suitable for applications, which have a limited life span or a limited power requirement, for instance greeting cards.

The batteries are printed using a silk-screen printing method similar to that used for t-shirts and signs.

A kind of rubber lip presses the printing paste through a screen onto the substrate, while a template covers the areas that are not to be printed on.

The process makes it possible to apply comparatively large quantities of printing paste, and the individual layers are slightly thicker than a hair.

The researchers have already produced the batteries on a laboratory scale, and the first products could possibly be finished by the end of this year. (ANI)

“Power crisis problem in Delhi to improve soon,” says Shiela Dikshit

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): The national capital, which is facing its worst power outages in recent times, with mercury breaching the 40 degrees Celsius mark everyday, was on Sunday assured of relief in a couple of days by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

A meeting of top officials was held by Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit on Sunday to find ways to resolve the power crisis in the city,

“Firstly central government has given us 150 MW extra power from its central pool. Hopefully we would receive it by today (Sunday) evening. Secondly we were not able to get 500 MW from Mandola power plant since it was out of order. But now we would get only 350 MW from there since its one or two transmission towers are still under repair. So with all this city would get a bit of relief,” said Sheila Dikshit.

Power demand has shot up to an all-time high of about 4275 MW, leaving a huge shortfall. Several areas have been facing frequent power cuts, with some lasting for 10 to 12 hours. The crisis has also led to severe water shortage in most parts of the city.

Dikshit, who had to face severe criticism from local residents, added that power distribution companies have been warned to improve the response time in attending to complaints.

“I and central government have given them time of four days saying that if we don’t see any improvement then some strict measures would be taken,” said Dikshit.

Delhi expects to get 250 MW more power from Uttarakhand by Monday. (ANI)
